A lEttEr from

OUR FOUNDER

Since our inception as a non profit, our mission has been simple yet profound. By using the skills and passion we have at hand as surfers and storytellers, we connect our youth to the healing, transformative, and nurturing powers of the ocean as a step towards creating a more equitable world.

The idea for Un Mar de Colores first came about when I would pack up my car in the mornings to go surf and would notice the Guatemalan family that lived next door looking over in curiosity as they got their children ready to leave for school. We would smile and wave to each other, but one day I began to wonder, why, despite living a mile from the beach, I never saw this family enjoying the outdoor sanctuary that we had just down the street? It was in these kids that I saw a mirror, a version of younger myself, coming from a multi-generational and multifamily household, who wasn’t introduced into the surf scene until my adult years, that led me to decide that I didn’t want another Black, LatinX, or Indigenous youth to have to wait until adulthood for that invitation.

As surfers, we move in sync with the rhythm of nature. We watch and wait as the moon exerts its influence on our waters, and we reap the benefit of the culmination of its effects as it creates the perfect waves we’ve learned to dance and glide on. When we surf, the illusion of separation blurs and we are reminded of our inherent connection with the water and natural world around us. The power of the whitewash waters that crash on our shores shape the shifting sands and coastal bluffs which we call home. Un Mar de Colores is inspired by this same force –influencing and shaping our community for the better.

Un Mar moves as a powerful wave of change, creating ripple effects of positivity

in our communities, starting with those who bring us hope and inspire us daily, our students. From our branding to our experiential learning style, our organization has always put our students and their families first. The North stars that guide us on this path of community healing and building are receptivity, reciprocity, and collective empowerment. We view our organization through the eyes of our students, responding to their individual needs, dreams, and intentions meeting each individual right where they’re at in their water journey. It’s a reminder to never stop viewing the world with childlike wonder and curiosity.

We would have never gotten this far without you, our supporters, or as we like to call you, our familia.

It’s because of your belief in our values and methodology that we’ve been able to grow slowly and consistently, like a solid oak tree establishing its strongly rooted foundation. We hope you’ll continue on this journey with us as we continue creating a more equitable world and bring about waves of change.

-

The ocean and earth carry many lessons, when we pay attention we can learn so much about ourselves and how we are all connected. One lesson I have learned and continue to learn is to trust yourself and the process. At Un Mar, I hope to learn and grow with our community to create a space where everyone can be themselves and learn how to take care of themselves, the ocean, and their community.

BEltrAN

Travel as much as you can and meet new people. Take care of your body because it will carry you through life, take care of the earth because it is your habitat. Don’t spend money on things you will only use once.. At Un Mar I hope to provide financial clarity and understanding of the organization budgets through my work to the leaders and directors so they can make decisions that impact the next generation through coordinating events and new experiences for kids to learn about themselves, new surroundings, and the ocean.

Find your purpose and always make it be your center. It will guide you and lead you down paths you could have never imagined, but knew you were destined for. In the face of adversity, smile back and keep moving at your own pace. Life is not a sprint, but a marathon! At Un Mar, I write grants and help secure funds for future as well as current budgets. I love this organization and enjoy watching it grow!

Growth is often abandonment of what we know or what keeps us from growing. I have constantly reminded myself of this universal lesson. Learning to both interact with the ocean and surf was a decision that forced me to abandon my comfort and meet my fears with intention, along with the strength and compassion of the ocean. What I experienced throughout the process was more than I could have ever foreseen. The ocean holds the spirit of our planet, and the echoes of ALL of our ancestors. I hope to share those lessons and that divine gift of the water with our participants. Being part of the beautiful team at Un Mar de Colores is such an honor and privilege. We get to learn from our participants, practice love and patience, surf, honor the land and ocean, and be a part of creating a space and community that is centered around the empowerment and future of our kiddos. Que mas!!!

I have a mission to teach our young shredders of tomorrow that they are in control of their own mind and destiny. To create the realization that they already have all of the tools to overcome moments of anxiety or uneasiness in the ocean and learn to “swim freely” both in the water and in other parts of their lives. The ocean is more than an area of sand and salt water; it, like a human, is a body that holds a spirit containing unlimited power and gentleness. The soul we have within, mirrors the same soul of the ocean – a powerful vessel containing equal parts of power, calmness, beauty, and playfulness. I want our younger generation to see the ocean as a mental safe space – where both tears from sadness or uncontrollable laughter are welcomed and kissed by the waves on the shoreline. I hope my work with Un Mar will allow me to master and teach our students that the ocean is a place to reset intention and remember that we all hold an equal balance of beauty, playfulness, and power. I want them to not only see but feel the energetic force of nature in its most beautiful form, and feel seen. The ocean is simultaneously the only playground and meditation space that we need, and all are welcome. A safe haven where Wi-Fi doesn’t exist, this is our space to unplug and reconnect with our wild side

CoNNECt

We believe the ocean has the power to connect us all. Surfing reminds us of our relationship to nature and each other by opening our eyes to our place and role in our ecosystem. The ocean does not discriminate, it welcomes all and provides a ‘sense of place’ no matter an individual’s circumstance or color. In the water we find a home and an opportunity to build community. That sense of belonging to something bigger has the power to inspire great things. We are all interconnected and interdependent.

ProtECt

As surfers, we have a responsibility to protect where we play. Our organization centers around the ocean and our diverse community; initiating conversations around intersectional environmentalism and modeling a connected future. Intersectionality fully informs the work of Un Mar De Colores by encouraging nuanced conversations around inequity. Recognizing that conversations around environmentalism and climate justice aren’t holistic without looking through an intersectional lens.

PlAY

We aim to inspire passion and purpose through play. Children find direction in the world through the things that bring them joy. Something as simple as catching a wave has the opportunity to teach a child their greatest life lessons Joy and meaningful play are integral elements for childhood development and guidance in finding their direction and purpose in life, so we cultivate purpose through passion and play; providing the tools, education, and experience to build confidence and a lifelong passion for ocean stewardship.

Our students learned about the benefits of hydroponics including less water consumption per crop and higher yield of harvest hosted by Urban Growth SD and Patagonia Cardiff.

KAYAKING

Our youth and their parents paired up, jumped into the red two-person kayaks, and paddled out against the surf to explore what was beneath the surface at la jolla coves. We paddled along the 200-foot-high sandstone bluff line dating back some 75 million years to the cretaceous period as we explored the ecological preserve. Pacific marine life came out to play as our youth and their parents witnessed california sea lions, tiger sharks, and even a turtle!

SAIlING

Our students experienced the feeling of freeness as the wind and ocean mist blew on their faces during their first ever sailing experience with the Mission Bay Aquatic Center. Before stepping on the Hobie Catamaran, they learned basic nautical terminology like starboard and port as well as sailing maneuvers such as tack and jibe. Followed by learning how to read the wind and tie a line to a cleat.

FELICIDADES TO OUR FIRST EVER GRADUATING CLASS!

These students have earned the Golden Seaweed awards for reaching the highest level of ocean lovers and surf shredders.

Together over two years we learned the relationship between sea and soil, explored the diversity under the sea, braved the waves, learned to shape a surfboard, built friendships, and learned to surf. However, the most important lessons are the intrinsic ones the youth found on their own. As one of our graduates Mila said best “I learned to be nicer to myself” in regards to the resilience she learned with the ongoing falls one faces while learning to surf.

BILLABONG X UN MAR DE COLORES FILM

Art has the power to influence how we see others and how we see ourselves which is why we continuously advocate for accurate, authentic representation in ocean centered media. The stories we share strive to break down barriers, open us to new ideas, and create inspiring and powerful role models from under-represented communities. Which is why we’ve partnered with Billabong Women’s to create a magical reflection of the importance of mentorship and representation for young women of color. During the summer of 2022, Billabong Athletes shared their passion, smiles, and skills as they worked with 4 of our incredible young women students. It was a lesson in reciprocity as the athletes spent the surf session reflecting on childlike wonder and our girls embraced how special it is to have these empowering role models. Thanks to the amazing team over at Billabong Women’s our story reached 42,000 people on social media.

As a part of our Art Grants, we support surf films with a purpose. The 2022 grant recipient was Kandai, a Japanese surfer and artist, based in Encinitas, CA. Along with film director Guigo Foggiatto, animator Mau Domingues and Editor & Creative Ari Bre Bre, Un Mar is producing and sponsoring a short film about Kandai’s deep and metaphysical connection to nature.

HADO (in Japanese, the wave frequency of all things) tells the story of Kandai, a surfer obsessed with trees who embarks on a journey of discovery to understand and learn their sacred song, only to find out that their melodies are interwoven throughout all of our natural world, including the waves that crash on our shores.

The goal of the community surf locker is to create a moving piece of interactive art that will operate as a storytelling piece, engaging the public wherever it is parked and creating an accurate representation of the global majority, which will promote a sense of belonging in outdoor spaces. As well as be able to provide the tools for recreation for a significant number of families in the San Diego region. OCTOBER 14, 1973 - MAY 25, 2020

The fire of necessity to start our organization came after the murder of George Floyd. In a time of darkness, we turned inwards and asked ourselves how we could take the skills we had at hand as surfers and storytellers to positively affect our immediate community. It’s not a direct approach to ending police brutality but we strongly believe investing in our youth is our first step on the path of equality, justice, and peace on earth.
