changes in the park John McLaren, horticulturist and Park superintendent, envisioned the Park as a pastoral setting where city residents could escape the clamor of industrial life. McLaren opposed including statues and buildings in the Park’s natural setting, but the Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 brought the exhibits and cultural attractions the city residents desired. These museums, sculptures and attractions have become permanent fixtures of the Park and create today’s world-famous cultural destination.

1 Mile Golden Gate Park transformed from inhospitable sand dunes to today’s green oasis thanks to the efforts of engineer William Hammond Hall. William Hall coaxed life out of the barren sand dunes by planting grasses, shrubs, and finally trees at the Western end of the Park. This wind break allowed the development of the remainder of the Park, and the rest is history!

fun facts • Golden Gate Park’s 1,017 acres are built upon reclaimed sand dunes once referred to as the “Outside Lands,” covering an area larger than Central Park!
• The Park was once home to zebras, peacocks, ostriches, and California’s last grizzly bear, Monarch. Monarch is on display at the California Academy of Science and served as the model for the bear on California’s State Flag.
• The Park served as a tent filled refugee camp for more than 40,000 survivors of the 1906 earthquake.
• The Shakespeare Garden only features plants and flowers mentioned in William Shakespeare’s works.
• During the Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 the Japanese Tea Garden was the first place in the U.S. to serve a “fortune cookie”
• The Dutch Windmill at the Northwestern end of the park once pumped up to 1.5 million gallons of water daily for irrigation use to a reservoir now named Stow Lake!
• 2020 is the Golden Gate Park’s 150th Anniversary!
• The recently restored Murphy Windmill at the Southwestern end of the park was the largest in the world when constructed in 1905 with 114’ long sails. • Since 1890, a herd of American Bison have lived in the Park. The herd is cared for by the San Francisco Zoo staff. • Golden Gate Park has 680 acres of forest, 130 acres of meadows, 15 miles of drives and 33 acres of lakes. • An ornate pedestrian suspension bridge, Observatory and a gambling casino were all located in the park during the 1890’s. 3/19
