Fernanda Rocha Founder of Support Group for Brazilian Mothers of Autistic Children

Fernanda Rocha is the founder of the first Portuguese-language support group in Massachusetts for mothers of autistic children, called “O Dom Especial de Ser Mãe” (“The Special Gift of Being a Mom”).

families. The group is a place where mothers can learn about autism, raising autistic children, advocating for them with schools and much more. Fernanda assists mothers on a daily basis over the telephone, or with scheduled appointments, referring them and helping them find solutions to all sorts of problems.

A Brazilian Immigrant, Fernanda is married and the mother of two autistic boys. Her children’s condition has transformed her life, and, as she faced tremendous adversity, she decided to fight to make a difference in their lives.

She works as a volunteer with several American institutions working with children with special needs. She is also the president of the Everett District Special Education PAC.

With the creation of the group, Fernanda helped write a new chapter in the lives of hundreds of

MAPS Álvaro Lima Outstanding Business Award (Prêmio MAPS Álvaro Lima Empresa de Destaque) PRESENTED TO:

Joseph Cerqueira Co-owner of Rocco’s Restaurant and Bar in Wilmington, MA

Walter Sousa Owner of Inman Square Wine & Spirits in Cambridge Joseph Cerqueira is the co-owner of Rocco’s Restaurant and Bar in Wilmington, MA. He was born in Arcos de Valdevez, in northern Portugal, and has been in the United States since 1980, following a brief stop in Venezuela.

Walter Sousa was born on the beautiful Island of Santa Maria, in the Azores, Portugal. When he was 9, his family left the island and moved to Cambridge, MA, where he has lived ever since.

Joe, as he is known among his friends, has always been involved in the food industry. Before taking over Rocco’s, he ran two very successful and memorable restaurants in the Cambridge area – A Tasca, and O Cantinho.

After graduating high school, Walter started his diverse career, initially working in the kitchen at the Boston University Campus. From there, he went on to work in the hospitality industry as shipping receiver at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Cambridge. Walter joined the Marines in 1980, where he served for 12 years.

A founding member of Amigos da Terça, a fraternal group of Portuguese entrepreneurs focused on the needs of the Portuguese-speaking community of Massachusetts and their social-economic advancement, Joe is a frequent volunteer at MAPS, often joining forces with other members of the group to provide lunch to the MAPS Senior Center.

In 1985, Walter opened Inman Square Wine and Spirits, a high-end liquor store that he still runs to this day, right in the heart of the Portuguese community of Cambridge.

Despite running a successful business, Walter always manages to find time to give back to his community as a volunteer and donor.

During the past year, Joe played a crucial role in raising funds to support the Senior Center. He and Walter Sousa were responsible for running the bar at the 2018 Boston Portuguese Festival. They donated the entire proceeds to the MAPS Senior Center, helping the organization bridge a funding gap that threatened the quality of services provided to the Portuguese-speaking seniors who attend the MAPS Senior Center.

Walter has been a great supporter of MAPS in recent years, assuming a leadership role in organizing last year’s firstever MAPS Chip-In for Charity Golf Tournament benefiting the organization’s Senior Center. He is a frequent guest of the MAPS Cambridge Senior Center, often donating lunch to the entire group. He is a co-founder of Amigos da Terça.

In his free time, Joe enjoys travelling and spending time with this wife and two beautiful daughters.

In his free time, Walter enjoys golfing with his friends and traveling to Portugal every year.

The MAPS Álvaro Lima Outstanding Business Award, awarded for the first time at the MAPS 2011 Awards Gala, honors businesses that, through their own regular activities or by supporting others’ initiatives, have made the lives of the Portuguese-speaking communities easier. The award was named after Álvaro Lima because of his tremendous efforts to study and support Brazilian and other immigrant communities in Massachusetts.

MAPS Mary & Manuel Rogers Lifetime Community Service Award (Prêmio MAPS Mary & Manuel Rogers Vida Dedicada ao Serviço Comunitário) PRESENTED TO:

Chaves Family, Represented by Dorothy, Mark, Philip and Jake Chaves, Joe & Dorothy Chaves Foundation The Chaves family’s dedication to Portuguese-speaking immigrants in Cambridge and surrounding areas has earned them the respect and admiration of the community. Joe Chaves, the family’s patriarch, was born on the island of Santa Maria, in the Azores, Portugal.

In 1961, at the age of 20, he immigrated to the U.S and met his soon-to-be wife, Dorothy, an Azorean immigrant from São Miguel who emigrated here in 1958, at age 13. By 1966 the couple was married, and soon had two sons – Philip and Mark. Joe earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Framingham State College.

Anthony parish, as part of the Music Ministry. With her husband, she was integrally involved in the CCD program, as well as the Santo Cristo and Santo António feasts, and other church activities.

Philip has been in the real estate industry for 17 years and is currently the Regional Vice President of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Management from UMASS/Boston and an MBA in Marketing from Bentley University.

Philip is married to Mary Katherine Chaves, a scientist at Amgen, and is the father of Sophia and Jacob (Jake), from his first marriage to Liliete Reis. The family still lives with Dorothy in Arlington, in the home that they shared with Philip and Mark’s late grandmother, Virginia Simas, a former MAPS Gala Award recipient who passed away in 2018.

In 2011, a year after their father’s passing, Philip and Mark started the Joe and Dorothy Chaves Foundation to preserve his legacy and continue their parent’s lifelong charitable work. The foundation has donated more than $78,000 to MAPS, Escola Portuguesa de Cambridge e Somerville, and Bunker Hill Community College, where Joe taught after retiring from the business he ran for more than 35 years. The foundation created an annual $1,000 Bunker Hill scholarship in Joe’s memory.

Mark has made a career in the computer software industry, working for SAS Institute for the past 13 years. He graduated from the University of Lowell with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and earned his Master’s degree at Duke University.

Mark enjoys his work for the Chaves Foundation, especially the Annual 5K Walk/ Run, as it gives him a chance to hear stories about his father and connect with the community. He is married to Katia Correa-Chaves, a veterinarian born in Angola. They live in Medford with their children Lucas and Coral.

Joe was a founding member and longtime volunteer for SPAL, an organization that merged with COPA in 1993 to form MAPS. He advocated strongly for the Somerville bilingual education programs, where Dorothy worked for more than 10 years. During that time, Joe volunteered his time to help hundreds of Portuguese speakers become U.S. citizens.

Jake is a junior at UMASS/ Boston. He is very involved in the St. Anthony’s music ministry as an organist, singer, and more. He loves taking part in the Chaves Foundation’s activities, in the Day of Portugal celebration, and in the parish feasts. He takes great pride in his heritage, especially his command of the Portuguese language.

In the 1970’s and 80’s, the couple played a crucial leadership role at St. Anthony’s parish in Cambridge, including fundraising to build the current church complex. Thus began decades of close involvement with the parish and its many religious celebrations and events. Dorothy Chaves has been a constant presence at the St.

The MAPS Mary & Manuel Rogers Lifetime Community Service Award is presented to the individual who best exemplifies the spirit of lifetime service to the Portuguese-speaking communities that Mary & Manuel Rogers demonstrated throughout their lives.

MAPS Jorge Fidalgo Community Service Award (Prêmio MAPS Jorge Fidalgo de Serviço Comunitário) PRESENTED TO:

Cabo Verdean Police Association Boston Police Department

This dedicated group of more than 40 Cabo Verdean police officers in Boston has been working with the community both before and since its creation in the fall of 2014—providing valuable input to help combat crime-related issues among youth and their families.

They have worked on numerous community programs, including: • The Cabo Verdean July 5th Senior Independence Brunch • The Walk for Cancer • The Special Olympics at Boston University • Christmas celebrations at St. Patrick Church in Roxbury and St. Peter Parish, Dorchester, for youth in need.

The CVPA’s mission is to address problems in the Cabo Verdean community and other neighboring communities. They address language barriers, aid diplomacy between Boston and Cabo Verde as police ambassadors, and work on education, youth development, youth violence, and mentorship. Group members focus on educating parents, both in English and their native languages, on how to work with the Police Department, community leaders, and clergy.

Officers participate in a variety of community youth programs, such as youth dialogues, basketball and soccer games, in order to continue to build bridges of trust between officers and young people in the City of Boston. The group also reaches out to communicate and share ideas on common issues with other communities in the greater Boston area that have large Cabo Verdean populations, such as Randolph, Brockton, Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton, and Providence, RI.

The MAPS Jorge Fidalgo Community Service Awards are presented annually to those individuals who have demonstrated by their actions a strong commitment to the social, educational, cultural and political welfare of the various Portuguese-speaking communities in the Greater Boston area. In 2001, the year of his untimely death, MAPS Board of Directors voted to name the annual Community Service Awards in honor of Jorge Fidalgo, a distinguished member of Boston’s Cabo Verdean community.

MAPS Person of the Year Award (Prêmio MAPS Pessoa do Ano) PRESENTED TO:

Margareth Shepard Framingham City Councillor

Margareth Shepard made history in 2017 when she successfully ran for City Councilor in Framingham, MA—becoming the first Brazilian-American elected to such a position in the U.S.

Framingham Democratic Committee, where she still serves as an Affirmative Action and Outreach Adviser. In addition, Margareth serves as a Commissioner for the MetroWest Commission on the Status of Women (MWCSW), and a Chair of the Massachusetts Brazilian American Citizen Council. In 2016, she also co-founded the Brazilians for Political Education movement, created to help members of the Brazilian and other communities learn how to become politically active and engaged.

Twenty-seven years ago, Margareth immigrated from her native Goiânia in Brazil, settling in Framingham. An entrepreneur at heart, she first worked as a nanny until starting her successful local business, Golden Cleaners.

Her father, Manoel Basilio de Sousa, received a MAPS Manuel N. Coutinho Outstanding Volunteer Award at the 2006 Gala for his work as Director of the Good Samaritan Center in Framingham for 10 years. Inspired by his example, Margareth volunteered her time by proposing policy changes to improve the quality of services provided to the Brazilian immigrant community. Margareth is currently Board Secretary of the Brazilian American Center (BRACE), a nonprofit organization that took over and expanded the work of the Good Samaritan Center, providing educational, cultural and other community services, programs and events.

Besides her public service, Margareth is an active member of the Massachusetts Brazilian immigrant community in many other ways. She has been assisting U.S. Green Card holders with Citizenship applications and young students with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) applications, as well as promoting civic engagement.

She holds degrees from the Catholic University of Goias in Brazil, and the Brazilian Educational Foundation.

In her spare time, Margareth’s favorite activities are swimming and playing with her grandkids.

Margareth has also served as a Framingham Town Meeting member, and is a former Treasurer of the

CO-HOSTS Alirio Mendes Pereira Alirio Pereira, MA, has been the MAPS Director of Immigrant Integration & Elder Services for the past 2 ½ years. Before that, he was a Family and Child Social Worker for eight years in the MAPS Family Support Services Program, where he continues to provide intakes and other assistance. Alirio also has coordinated the MAPS Intimate Partner Abuse Educational Program since July 2008, running groups for Portuguese-speaking male participants.

Born and raised on the island of Fogo in Cabo Verde, Alirio received a scholarship in 1997 to study in Brazil.

Patricia de Oliveira

He completed his BA in Social Science and Education Science, as well as his Master’s Degree in Sociology, at the Federal University of Goias, Brazil. In 2006, he became a professor of Sociology at the Faculty of Araguaia and Faculty of Avila in Brazil.

Alirio came to the U.S. in 2007 and joined MAPS in 2008 as a group facilitator for Driver Alcohol Education (DAE), a position he held for four years. He also coordinated the DAE Program for 1½ years.

Alirio loves spending his spare time with family and friends, and watching soccer games!

Born in Brazil, Patricia moved to Massachusetts with her family when she was six years old. She and her family were welcomed by the Portuguese speaking community in Cambridge, where she received top-notch bilingual education in Portuguese/English.

Patricia is an alumna of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, where she received a B.A in Political Science and Public Policy with a minor in Business Administration.

Patricia, a MAPS Board member since 2014, and the Board Secretary, is a founding member of the Student Immigrant Movement, where, in addition to advocating on behalf of undocumented immigrant youth at the local, state and federal level, she took on the role of College Access Advisor to guidance counselors across New England, as well as to individual students and their families at a time when students were fearful to “come out” as undocumented, and many counselors were shocked to learn their students were undocumented.

After completing her bachelor’s degree, Patricia spent 3 years at Centro Latino as the Citizenship Services

Patricia is an AmeriCorps alum, serving in the New American Integration Program, where she taught English to adult learners and helped immigrants complete their citizenship applications. She is a certified medical interpreter and has a TESOL certificate.

Patricia interned at the Boston Office of Senator John Kerry, working closely with Senior Issues Manager Carmen Velazquez, assisting constituents with immigration related services.

Patricia is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, going to the movies and the theater, and dogs.

MAPS MISSION To improve the lives of Portuguese-speaking individuals and families from Massachusetts and help them become contributing, active participants in American society while maintaining a strong ethnic identity and a sense of community. Jennifer graduated from Holy Cross with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2001 and from George Washington University in DC with a JD and a MPH degree in 2006. She began her career as a lawyer at Ropes & Gray in Boston and now works at Vertex Pharmaceuticals.

Jennifer K. Santos was born and raised in New Bedford, MA. Jennifer’s father is an immigrant from Madeira, Portugal, who arrived in the United States when he was 12 years old, with his mother and five brothers and sisters.

Jennifer’s mother is also of Portuguese descent, and her family comes from the north of Portugal. Jennifer is extremely proud of her Portuguese culture and heritage.

She joined the MAPS Board of Directors 3 years ago to help support the amazing work MAPS does for Portuguese-speaking communities.

In her free time, Jennifer loves to travel, ballroom dance, and spend time with her husband, Sean Collins, owner of American Universal Logistics, and their new puppy.

LEADERSHIP (Liderança da MAPS) Paulo R. Pinto, MPA Executive Director Paulo R. Pinto is the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS).

He has served the Portuguese-speaking community throughout his 30-year career in the health and social service field. He began working at MAPS in January 1994, serving as Program Administrator for the agency’s Disease Prevention and Education Program until late 1995, when he was promoted to the position of Deputy Executive Director. He served as the agency’s second-in-command until 2000, when he was appointed Executive Director by the MAPS Board of Directors.

A native of Portugal who grew up in Mozambique, Mr. Pinto immigrated to the US in 1980. He holds a BA in Political Science with a minor in English from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration (MPA) from Suffolk University. He received the Brazilian Times Community Service Awards in 2000, 2008 and

Susan Pacheco President, Board of Directors Susan Pacheco is a first-generation American, born to parents who emigrated from São Miguel island, in the Azores, Portugal. She is fluent in Portuguese, and has more than 25 years of experience in the Elder Care field.

She has been employed at the Cambridge Council on Aging since 1995, and has been the Executive Director since 2012. Prior to this position, she was the Director of Client Services, and worked as a case manager at the Somerville Cambridge Elder Services.

2012, and the Portuguese Heritage Award from the Massachusetts Portuguese American Legislative Caucus at the State House in 2010. He was also selected as a Finalist for the 2015 Nonprofit Excellence Award in Leadership by the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network.

A founder of the Massachusetts White Ribbon Day (WRD)–a statewide annual campaign promoted by Jane Doe Inc. that recruits men to step up and speak out against violence against women–Mr. Pinto was named a Co- Chair of the 2012 WRD Campaign.

During Mr. Pinto’s tenure as Executive Director of MAPS, the organization has greatly expanded services and received many distinguished awards for its leadership and capacity to address the needs of the community.

He is a member of the Governor’s Council to Address Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Advisory Council on New Americans, the Jane Doe Inc. Board of Directors, and the Community Health Advisory Council of Cambridge Health Alliance. He is also a Notary Public for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Susan currently serves on several community boards and various Cambridge city committees, such as the City’s Domestic Violence Steering Committee, and the Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services Board. She was elected to be President of the Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers’ Board of Directors at the organization’s 2018 Annual Meeting, and she is the current chair of the Cambridge Elder Abuse Prevention Coalition.

Susan is an alumna of the University of Massachusetts/ Boston, where she studied Early Childhood Psychology.

She is a licensed social worker through the State of Massachusetts. In her free time, she enjoys reading and cooking, especially Portuguese Cuisine.

THE PORTUGUESE-SPEAKING WORLD Approximately 260 million people in the world speak Portuguese. They come from a variety of cultural, ethnic and racial backgrounds in countries scattered across the globe— tied together by ocean waters and by their common language. Like French, Italian, Spanish and others, Portuguese is a Romance language derived from Latin. It evolved slowly in the Western Iberian Peninsula from its ancestor, Galician Portuguese, and then spread to many other parts of the world. Portuguese is the official language of eight countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America, and is co-official or widely spoken in several others.

PORTUGUESE SPEAKERS IN MASSACHUSETTS AND IN THE MAPS SERVICE AREA Portuguese speakers are one of the largest linguistic minority groups in Massachusetts.

Drawn to New England first by the whaling and fishing industries starting in the early 1800s, Portuguese and Cabo Verdeans have lived here for hundreds of years, while the more recent waves of Brazilian immigration began in earnest in the 1980s.

Numbers of Massachusetts residents with Brazilian, Cabo Verdean or Portuguese ancestry are approaching 440,000, according to recent annual and multi-year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates—436,169 in 2016. Available estimates don’t include immigrants and their descendants from other Portuguesespeaking countries that are shown on the adjacent map.

Unofficial community sources estimate that numbers of Portuguese speakers in the state are actually higher, based on service statistics, school enrollments and other data. It is difficult to get an exact number of Portuguese speakers in Massachusetts because the full US Census of all households every 10 years does not track this population separately, and Portuguese speakers identify with a variety of different ethnic and racial groups. MAPS is working with the Census Bureau and other community organizations to obtain a more accurate profile of our communities.

The state’s largest population of Portuguese speakers traditionally has lived in Southeastern Massachusetts, but in the MAPS service area there are large enclaves in greater Boston, greater Lowell and Framingham/MetroWest. Most MAPS clients come from Brazil, Cabo Verde or Portugal, but the area also has attracted newcomers from Angola, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, and other parts of the Portuguese-speaking world. MAPS served more than 18,000 community members during Fiscal 2018.

MAPS is dedicated to providing assistance to Portuguese speakers of all backgrounds in order to promote a better quality of life and a stronger, more unified presence in Massachusetts.
