SPOTLIGHT A PARK: JOY PARK

Joy Park is a 44 Acre park located at 2615 Joy Road. The park has beautiful paved and soft surface trails showcasing the wonderful natural resources on the site. In early 2016 we will be celebrating the grand opening of the City’s first full scale public art project with wonderful amenities that will add play value to the park. Joy Park is a true hidden gem in the City.

HOLIDAY FUN HOUR (AGES 4-8)

EASTER EGG HUNT

AT EDGERTON COMMUNITY GYM (1929 EDGERTON ST) SATURDAY, MARCH 26 (PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED) Pre-hunt activities will begin at 10:00AM The Egg Hunt will start at 11:00AM Children ages 3-5 (11:00AM) and ages 6-8 (11:30AM) Mark your calendars for our annual Easter Egg Hunt! We will start our morning off with breakfast treats, colorful crafts and a visit from the Easter Bunny - then its happy hunting! Children will be divided into two age groups and will be hunting for wrapped candy and plastic eggs, some of which may be redeemed for great prizes. Bags of goodies will be available for children under 2 years of age. Don’t forget your camera! In the event of inclement weather, treat bags will be given away at 11:00AM at the Edgerton Community Gym. Cost is $5.00 per child.

Join us for a great time at our annual mom-son bowling outing. Guys, show your mom’s how much you appreciate them by giving her a Mother’s Day Out! MAPLEWOOD COMMUNITY CENTER AMENITIES FITNESS CENTER Maplewood Community Center’s newly renovated fitness center offers state of the art cardiovascular and strength equipment.

Our wide variety of cardio machines includes treadmills, elliptical cross-trainers, step mills, summit trainers, stationary bikes, stair climbers and rowers. Most machines have an entertainment system, allowing you to watch television or use your iPod during your workout. We also offer weight training equipment to work every part of your body. A certified fitness professional can provide initial and ongoing instruction on how to use the equipment to meet your goals.

GROUP FITNESS Enjoy access to over 80 complimentary group exercise classes every week! Classes are held in our two studio spaces, the spinning room, the lap pool and the gym. The broad range of formats includes Les Mills BODYPUMP™, spinning, muscle madness, yoga, Pilates, and many others! Intensities range from calm to exceptionally rigorous, so classes can be enjoyed by members of all ages and fitness levels.

WALKING/JOGGING TRACK Rain or shine, take a walk around Maplewood Community Center’s indoor track. This suspended track is 1/11 of a mile long with three spacious lanes for walkers and runners.

AQUATIC CENTER Thrilling family fun and fitness adventures await you. This fabulous aquatic center features a 6-lane lap pool, an interactive leisure pool (zero-depth), a 120-foot twirling water slide, and a soothing hot tub. A jaunty, interactive submarine takes center stage in the zero-depth entry leisure pool allowing children to climb inside the access hatch, slide out the turbo prop, or take a seat at the submarine’s control console. Children can peer through the interactive periscope, play with pressure activated sprayers and floor geysers, or use the submarine’s control panel to push button activate the sub’s roof-top spray guns. Murals of the coral reef and other underwater wonders grace the walls of the facility.

GYM Bring a group of friends and challenge them to a game of basketball, volleyball, pickle ball, floor hockey or badminton. A variety of other fun gym activities are available and posted on the monthly gym schedule.

As children grow older, they reduce outdoor play activities. Some youth maintain their physical activity levels by participating in organized sports (teams), but others are left on their own, and exercise less and less as they get older. This class is designed to give youth ages 10 and older who are interested in working out at the Maplewood Community Center, a head start. They will learn basic fitness principles for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and be taught bodyweight exercises and machines that are age appropriate. Passing this class will qualify the participants to utilize the fitness areas. Cost is $36.00 ($26.00 for MCC members).

Mind-body, Core Strength, and Core Stability are keys to a healthier lifestyle through mindful movement and Pilates. A Pilates Reformer is elegant, spring-based resistance equipment that allows one to work very precisely, developing strength and flexibility. Pilates teaches body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement. There is an emphasis on proper breathing and correct body alignment where quality of movement is valued over quantity of repetitions. These movements create a sleek toned body while simultaneously alleviating pain and reducing stress. MCC will now be offering Personal Pilates Reformer Training. Join Certified Personal Trainer Barb Johnson as she guides you through this 6 week strength training program specifically geared for participants ages 55 and older. Join Certified Personal Trainer Jerry Smith as he guides you through this six-week strength training program. This program will increase the strength of your muscles, maintain the integrity of your bones, and improve your balance, coordination, and mobility. In addition, strength training can help reduce the signs and symptoms of many chronic diseases, including arthritis.

Taekwondo is an exciting martial art in which students develop themselves physically and mentally. Participants will learn sparring, forms, and self-defense. Classes are family friendly and focus on building healthy lifestyle habits for all ages. All skill levels are welcome. A Great Family Activity!

Classes will be led by Chau our Taekwondo Master & Certified Personal Trainer Master Chau Truong has been training in martial arts for 20 years and is a Kukkiwon certified Master Instructor. He has coached and competed in numerous local and international tournaments, including the World Taekwondo Championships.

Master Truong is an ACE certified personal trainer and a licensed rehabilitation professional. He is dedicated to helping others learn how to live an active and healthy lifestyle.

This program, coached by Felipe Aceituno a USSF National D License holder as well as competitive youth soccer coach, is limited to 11 kids that have demonstrated a love and potential for the game of soccer. This comprehensive and fun program will be dedicated to developing and improving two basic but integral areas of the game; ball control and ball striking. Participants will learn and apply technical skills and moves such as inside cut, outside cut, croif and more. At the conclusion of the program your athlete will have a solid and polished foundation to continue developing their soccer skills. Cost is $170.00 ($150 for MCC members).

PREREQUISITES • Have attended a minimum 3 Maplewood Parks and Rec Soccer programs in the past.

The 3v3 format for ages 4-6, and 4v4 format for ages 7-9, will provide for more touches, increased playing time, and most important more fun! This program is six weeks in length and will be played Tuesdays or Thursdays with the groups being split between the days. NFL YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL – EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE (AGES 4 - 14)

AT NORTH HIGH SCHOOL SUNDAYS, APRIL 24 – JUNE 26, BETWEEN 12PM-5PM NFL FLAG FOOTBALL is coming to Maplewood! Maplewood Parks and Recreation and National Flag Football are partnering to bring you the very best when it comes to youth flag football programming. National Flag Football is the largest NFL FLAG operator in the country featuring over 25,000 participants annually. This is a 5 vs. 5, non-contact, recreational, co-ed format.

Teams are limited to 10 players to maximize playing time. This is an exceptional program for first time players who want to learn the fundamentals of football and a wonderful opportunity for players who may want to continue to enhance their skills before taking the next leap into tackle football.

Games are played at North high school on Sunday afternoons between 12:00 – 5:00PM. Practices are one hour prior to game time each week. Participates will receive a NFL reversible jersey, flag belt and individual participation award. Games are officiated

by MHSAA referees.

Children are placed on teams according to their school and grade to ensure classmates are playing together. No try-outs! Everyone participates! Cost is $123.50.

YOUTH SOFTBALL

The softball season will begin league play the week of June 12 and conclude with a season-end tournament. All games are played in Little Canada, Maplewood, Mahtomedi, and White Bear Lake.

Practices will begin approximately 2-3 weeks prior to the start of the season. All ages as of January 1, 2016 determine league age.

T-BALL AND POP-UP LEAGUES (AGES 4-8) The t-ball and coach pitch programs are designed to teach the fundamentals of baseball and softball to girls and boys. The program emphasizes individual growth, cooperation, fair play as opposed to competition, and most importantly fun. All games are played as controlled scrimmages – NO SCORES ARE KEPT. In order to provide a positive learning experience we use a ball designed for safety while at the same time developing confidence and skills.

The Sunday t-ball teams will always hit from a tee. The Pop-up and Mite coaches pitch to the hitters. These leagues will be 10 game seasons.

SUNDAY T-BALL is offered to boys and girls ages 4-6 (must be 4 years by June 1). All games are played at various Maplewood parks on Sunday evenings at 6:15PM or 7:30PM. Cost is $60.00.

BOYS POP-UP is offered to boys ages 7-8 (must be 7 by September 1) with at least one previous year of t-ball experience. Games are played at 6:15PM or 7:30PM on Monday and Wednesday evening at various parks in Maplewood. Cost is $60.00.

The adult athletic sign sponsorship is a unique marketing opportunity for local businesses. Maplewood Parks & Recreation has started an outfield sign program at Goodrich. This is an opportunity to purchase one, two, or three 4’ x 8’ outfield signs that are visible from the softball fields, as well as North St. Paul Road. Goodrich houses the entire adult softball program (summer, fall and late fall leagues) and hosts multiple youth tournaments throughout the season. The funds from these sponsorships will go directly to maintaining and upgrading this facility keeping the fields suitable for the high level of play they receive. JR. POLAR FOOTBALL

Jr. Polar Football is a volunteer youth sports organization committed to building teamwork, understanding the fundamentals of the game, developing skills, encouraging sportsmanship and most importantly having fun playing football. The program is open to residents that live within or attend school (public or private) within the geographic boundary of North St. Paul - Maplewood - Oakdale and is part of the North St. Paul Athletic Association. The football program is open to all youth. The goal of the football program is to encourage sportsmanship and to teach the fundamentals of football. Flag Football is available to boys & girls entering Kindergarten up to 2nd grade. Tackle football begins in 3rd grade and continues through 8th grade. NORTH POLARS FASTPITCH

The North Polars Fastpitch Association (NPFA) is a non-profit organization established to foster the girl’s fastpitch softball program in the area of Independent School District 622, which is within the boundaries of North St. Paul High School.

This includes all or portions of the communities of North St. Paul, Maplewood, Lake Elmo and Oakdale. The association exists to fulfill the girls fastpitch softball needs of the community and is the primary advocate of the traveling program. The association supports good sportsmanship and the sound development of softball fundamentals within the community to ensure that girls participating in the program will have a positive and rewarding experience that will maximize personal and team growth. The association requires quality coaching and provides an atmosphere for learning softball skills for both coaches and players. The association sponsors membership in appropriate leagues to encourage quality competition.
