Sunflowers reach for the sky, planted for their radiant beauty and delicious seeds, while monarch butterflies and bumble bees dance around the zinnias. Edgerton Community Garden is an oasis of vivid flowers, a living fence filled with edible fruits, and individual garden plots. Located within Edgerton Park, this community garden is situated next to the baseball fields and a playground.

Each garden plot is rented for the growing season by individuals. It is worth a trip to stroll the garden paths to look at the different gardening styles and plants that people grow from different cultures, and to talk to the gardeners working there. Urban Agriculture is a growing trend in Maplewood and other metro areas as more and more people seek local, fresh organic produce, and wellness benefits such as fresh air, and great exercise. This year, park improvements include piping in water for the gardens instead of filling the large water tank, and the hardscape will be laid for two ADA accessible gardens.

MAPLEWOOD PICNIC SHELTERS

The City of Maplewood has picnic facilities at several of our parks.

There is a fee, and some shelters require a $100.00 damage deposit to reserve the shelter. Picnic shelters not listed are a “first come, first served” shelter for regular usage by patrons. This does not apply to large organized events. Outside rentals of bounce houses, etc. require additional permits and the purchase of liability insurance. For a full list of reservable shelters, please visit www.maplewoodmn.gov/ pr and select picnic shelters.

RECYCLING IN THE PARKS

In an effort to reduce trash and promote recycling, the City of Maplewood now offers recycling in our parks. Look for the blue bins and do your part in helping keep our parks clean!

COMMUNITY GYM PARTY PACKAGES

Looking for somewhere to have a party or just get together with friends for some fun? We offer partygoers equipment to play volleyball, basketball, soccer, floor hockey, football, and other activities. Have a game or activity that you would like to play? Bring it with! Must be approved by gym monitor. This is a great option for adult outings, family gatherings, birthday parties, and more! For parties we allow light decorating of the area during your scheduled rental time and we’ll have tables set up when you arrive for gifts, cake or pizza and have the gym ready for fun. Call 651.249.2121 to book or to ask any questions. *Rental requests must be made at least 10 days prior to the 1st of the month in which the rental will take place. (Example: a rental request for December must be made no later than November 20)*

Sarah visited various parks throughout the City of Maplewood and took pictures at each site. Sarah’s photos are featured on the front cover of this brochure and also below. Sarah Lilja has lived in Maplewood for 27 years and has spent many happy hours in the City’s parks. She is a self-taught photographer who hopes her photos help people see new or unexpected views of the abundant natural world found in Maplewood’s beautiful parks and open spaces.

WINTER ICE RINKS & WARMING HOUSES

Maplewood maintains ten skating rinks throughout the city, four of which have supervised warming houses. Warming houses will not be open when temperatures are -10° or when the windchill reaches -20°. Warming houses will also be closed until the rinks are cleared following snow, and when warm temperatures soften the ice. Call the weather information hotline for closure details: 651-249-2190. Warming houses are scheduled to be open December 26 - February 10 (weather permitting). Warming houses will be closed December 31 and January 1.

This clinic is a great way to fine tune your floor hockey skills just before the floor hockey league gets underway. Not only will players train in all volleyball skills, but also their volleyball knowledge of real game situations to help prepare them to play in a team setting. This class is for children ages 9 months - 2 years, who have little to no experience in tumbling. This class will include log rolls, forward rolls, climbing, crawling, running and jumping. Equipment will consist of small beams, low bars, mats, and foam courses. Parent participation required.

This class is for children ages 2 - 4 years. This class will include forward and backwards rolls, handstands, cartwheels, building skills with balance, crawling, running and jumping. Equipment will consist of low and high beams, low bars, mats, and foam courses. Moderate parent participation required.

TOTS 3 - ADVANCED

This class is for children ages 3 - 5 years. This class will teach the skills that enable increasing flexibility, and prepare them for the Gymnastics program. We perform splits & bridges, handstands & cartwheels, and build on skills with running and jumping. Equipment will consist of high beams, low and high bars, mats, and intermediate foam courses. Light parent participation required.

Boys and girls will play in separate leagues according to their grade level. The 3rd-4th grade divisions will play their games with 9-foot baskets to provide a positive and rewarding experience for the participants.

The 5th-8th grade divisions will use regulation 10-foot baskets. Teams will begin practice in November.

YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUES (BOYS & GIRLS IN GRADES 3-8)

AT VARIOUS SCHOOL LOCATIONS IN VARIOUS COMMUNITIES SATURDAYS, DECEMBER 1 - MARCH 2 This recreational program is for girls and boys grades 3-8 (as of the 2018-2019 school year) and is designed to provide all participants with an opportunity to have fun, learn basic basketball skills, and learn how to play as a team. Boys and girls will play in separate leagues according to their grade level. Teams will play other teams from Little Canada, Oakdale, Mendota Heights, Cottage Grove, Stillwater, White Bear Lake, Mahtomedi, and more! The 3rd and 4th grade divisions will play their games with 9-foot baskets to provide a positive and rewarding experience for the participant while the 5th-8th grade divisions will use regulation 10-foot baskets. Games are played Saturday mornings and afternoons beginning in early December and concluding in early March. Teams will have one practice night per week during the season. Teams will begin practice in November.

Cost is $135.00. Registration deadline is extended to November 7.

All players must be in high school. Each team must have a parent who is on the bench at each game.

All rosters must be handed in one week prior to the team’s first game. Fee includes jersey, scorekeeper, and two referees per game. Players on a Varsity, Junior Varsity, or B Squad basketball team are not eligible to play in this league. Team fee is $575.00. The 3v3 format for ages 4-6, and 4v4 format for ages 7-9 will provide for more touches, increased playing time, and most important more fun! This program is six weeks in length and will be played Tuesdays or Thursdays with the groups being split between the two days.

2018 ANNUAL REC RUN RECAP RECREATION

The morning of our 5th Annual Maplewood Rec Run 3K/5K started out on the chilly side but our racers took it in stride, and along with our great volunteers, staff and sponsors, made the event a huge success. Kids and their grownups joined in the pre-race fun, sipped hot apple cider, played games, got to check out a police car and firetruck, and meet Super Man! We had our largest runner turn out to date and were able to raise $1,400 for our Youth Scholarship Fund.

Thanks to the Maplewood Police and Fire departments for having a police car and fire truck on site for the kids to check out and to the reserves for providing safe street crossings for the runners.

A huge thank you to the staff that volunteered their time to help with this event and the companies that sponsored our race!

Wish Upon a Ballet is a dance program for children that incorporates popular children’s stories as well as ballet stories to create a dance class that is more than ballet steps. Using musical instruments, parachutes, and scarves we will create a complete fairy tale experience while we skip, leap, jump and spin. This way, an introduction to the movements and vocabulary of ballet are taught in a fun and creative manner. Children will learn an appreciation of dance and music while developing strength and flexibility. Parents, family, and friends will be invited to observe a special performance at the end of each session. Come join the fun! Girls and boys will need ballet shoes. Girls should wear a leotard and tights. Boys should wear comfortable clothes they can move around in.

HIP HOP AND TAP (AGES 5-8) MONDAYS, FEBRUARY 4 - JUNE 3, 6:00PM - 7:00PM (NO CLASSES FEBRUARY 18, MARCH 11, & MAY 27)

Growing dancers will experience the upbeat and energetic style of hip hop as well as the exciting rhythms of tap. Proper terms for dance steps will be taught as well as body awareness to improve posture, strength, and flexibility. Students will gain poise and confidence as they leap and spin! Ballet and tap shoes are required. Cost is $165

HOW CAN I SUPPORT MAPLEWOOD PARKS & REC? ADOPT - A- PARK

The goal of the Adopt-A-Park Program is to provide an opportunity for interested parties to take part in maintaining our parks system. Providing this opportunity not only encourages and promotes community involvement, but also allows us to beautify and improve our parks. All Adopt-A-Park projects should aim towards benefiting the majority of park users. This opportunity is available to any individual, family, resident, group organization, or business that is eager to help beautify our parks. The Adopt-A-Park commitment period is from April 1 – October 31. Applications are accepted throughout the year and require a minimum of once a month dedication.

ADULT ATHLETIC SIGN SPONSORSHIP

The adult athletic sign sponsorship is a unique marketing opportunity for local businesses. Maplewood Parks & Recreation has started an outfield sign program at Veteran’s Memorial Park (formerly Goodrich). This is an opportunity to purchase one, two, or three 4’ x 8’ outfield signs that are visible from the softball fields as well as North St. Paul Road. Veteran’s Memorial Park houses the entire adult softball program (summer, fall and late fall leagues) and hosts multiple youth tournaments throughout the season. The funds from these sponsorships will go directly to maintaining and upgrading this facility, keeping the fields suitable for the high level of play they receive.

This non-profit organization works to promote, support and enhance the growth of the Maplewood Nature Center and Neighborhood Preserves. YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Youth Scholarship Fund serves Maplewood residents (under 18 years) who demonstrate a financial need and may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in recreation programs. Qualifying families are asked to pay 1/3 of the program fee and the scholarship fund covers the remaining 2/3 of the fee. Sponsorship of our scholarship program is a great way to show your support for Maplewood Parks & Recreation and the community. Your contribution will make a huge difference in the lives of our participants and enable them to build a positive and healthy lifestyle through recreational programming. The mission of the Johnson Como North St. Paul Hockey Association (JCNSP) is to empower all players with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for success through the principles of fair play and good sportsmanship in the game of hockey. This program’s goal is to form a competitive hockey association that will host traveling hockey teams. To accomplish this mission, the coaches will emphasize individual player skills and team skills, in an environment in which youth players can learn the basic skills and rules of ice hockey, master these skills and have fun while developing a lifelong interest in hockey.

Jr. Polar Football is a volunteer youth sports organization committed to building teamwork, understanding the fundamentals of the game, developing skills, encouraging sportsmanship, and most importantly having fun playing football. The Maplewood Area Historical Society and the Bruentrup Heritage Farm is located on 2.5 acres of land with nine buildings that date back to 1891. It is surrounded on two sides by a 22-acre prairie maintained as open space by the City of Maplewood. The Farm is used for public events and exhibits and can be rented for private events such as weddings. NORTH POLARS FASTPITCH

The North Polars Fastpitch Association (NPFA) is a non-profit organization established to foster the girl’s fastpitch softball program in the area of Independent School District 622, which is within the boundaries of North St. Paul High School. This includes all or portions of the communities of North St. Paul, Maplewood, Lake Elmo and Oakdale. The association exists to fulfill the girl’s fastpitch softball needs of the community and is the primary advocate of the traveling program. The association supports good sportsmanship and the sound development of softball fundamentals within the community, to ensure that girls participating in the program will have a positive and rewarding experience that will maximize personal and team growth. The association requires quality coaching and provides an atmosphere for learning softball skills for both coaches and players. The association sponsors membership in appropriate leagues to encourage quality competition.
