MAYOR’S MESSAGE

As we gather once again to celebrate Pioneer Days, I’m reminded of the deep roots that anchor our community and the vibrant growth that continues to shape our future. This year’s theme, “Rooted and Growing,” beautifully captures the spirit of Mapleton—a city built on strong values, enduring traditions, and a shared vision for what lies ahead.

Our roots run deep. They are found in the people who have shaped this city. From the early pioneers who settled this valley with grit and faith, to the generations of families who have nurtured this land and community with their time, talents, and love.

This year, we honor the memory of two such individuals—Peggy Burt and Jim Brady—whose legacies are woven into the fabric of Mapleton.

Peggy Burt was a beloved presence in our community. For two decades, she managed the Senior Gym with dedication and heart, always greeting others with a warm smile and, if you were lucky, a piece of her famous homemade fudge. Peggy had a gift for making everyone feel seen and valued. Her selfless service, especially through the Mapleton Senior Citizens Committee, touched countless lives. She was a steady, joyful presence at community events, and her absence will be deeply felt.

Jim Brady also left a lasting mark on Mapleton. As our City Attorney for over a decade, a City Council member, and Mayor, Jim’s leadership helped guide our city through important chapters of growth. His commitment to public service and his love for Mapleton were evident in all he did. We are grateful for his many contributions and the example he set.

Mapleton’s foundation is one of resilience, unity, and service. These values continue to guide us today, whether we’re preserving open spaces, supporting local businesses, or strengthening our neighborhoods.

At the same time, we are growing—thoughtfully and purposefully. We see it in the new families moving in, the improvements to our parks and infrastructure, and the expanding opportunities for connection and recreation. Growth brings change, but it also brings new energy, ideas, and possibilities. As we grow, we remain committed to honoring our heritage while embracing the future with optimism and care.

Pioneer Days is a time to celebrate all that makes Mapleton special—our history, our people, and our bright future. It’s a chance to come together as friends and neighbors, to enjoy the parade, fireworks, and festivities, and to reflect on the blessings of living in such a remarkable place.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Let’s continue to grow together—rooted in our values, and reaching toward a bright future.

CHAIRS’ MESSAGE

ROOTED AND GROWING.

We are honored and excited to serve as this year’s chairs for Mapleton’s Pioneer Days Celebration. As a family of six, with four energetic kids, this celebration holds a special place in our hearts. It’s more than a summer tradition; it’s a reflection of who we are and the community we love.

Mapleton is not just where we live, it’s home in every sense of the word. Kendall was born in Illinois and spent his early years there before his family moved

to Orem, Utah. He had a wonderful childhood and teenage years surrounded by good friends and strong family values. Even then, Kendall always had a special place in his heart for Mapleton. He admired its beauty, its smalltown charm, and its strong sense of community. We were excited to build our home here 13 years ago and continue to raise our family in Mapleton.

Jamie is a sixth-generation Mapleton resident. Her roots run deep in this soil, and she carries

the legacy of ancestor pioneers who built this town with grit, heart, and a love for their neighbors. Mapleton has shaped who she is, it’s in her memories and her values.

Of course, with growth and development, our town has changed. At times, we’ve struggled with those changes, watching open fields turn into neighborhoods, and familiar places evolve. But volunteering with the City has opened our eyes to the beauty in this new Mapleton. We’ve seen firsthand the good people who are moving here, the new energy and ideas, and the deep love they’re developing for this place we’ve always called home.

This year’s Pioneer Days theme, “Rooted and Growing,” speaks to that balance. It honors the deep roots we all have, whether planted generations ago or just beginning to grow, and the shared future we’re building together. We believe that Mapleton can stay true to its pioneer spirit even as it blossoms into something new.

Our family loves Mapleton. We love the quiet mornings, the friendly waves from neighbors, and the sense that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. Pioneer Days is a chance to celebrate all of that—to honor our past, enjoy our present, and look forward to what’s ahead.

We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

MISS SPRINGVILLE/MAPLETON

ROXY PACKARD

Miss Springville/Mapleton I just graduated from high school and am thrilled to continue my education at Utah Valley University. I plan to study business and marketing, as I aspire to become a small business owner one day. This August, I’ll begin a nail apprenticeship and work toward earning my nail technician license. I’m so excited to serve our community this year in my new role and am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent Springville and Mapleton at Miss Utah in the summer of 2026!

Pioneer Days is easily my favorite time of year. When I think of summer, I automatically think about all the activities that Mapleton puts together. I can’t remember missing a single firework show. Each year, the show gets bigger and better, and it never fails to amaze me. While that may be my favorite part, it’s truly a week where everyone comes together. I see people from Mapleton, Spanish Fork, Springville, Salem, and beyond. It is a time for our community to unite, and there’s no other time when I feel closer to everyone.

WHITNEY JARMAN

1st Runner-Up

I’m so pleased to serve my amazing community and represent a place that means so much to me. This year, I’ve been traveling across the United States as a semi-professional dancer, competing and training as I work toward my goal of becoming a professional dancer. I’m excited to share that I’ll be starting my training as a midwife this fall, taking my first big steps into the medical field. It’s been an incredible journey balancing my passion for dance with my deep desire to help others through healthcare. I’m so grateful for the opportunities ahead and look forward to continuing to grow, learn, and give back to the community I love.

Pioneer Days holds a special place in my heart because it represents the spirit of community, tradition, and celebration that makes our town so unique. Growing up, I looked forward to the festivities every year—whether it was the parade, the fireworks, or the chance to gather with friends and neighbors who feel more like family. It’s a time when everyone comes together to honor our heritage, reflect on the strength and

resilience of those who came before us, and create lasting memories. Being part of Pioneer Days reminds me of how proud I am to call this place home.

PAIGE BALLARD

2nd Runner-Up

I’m honored to serve on this year’s Miss Springville/Mapleton royalty. I grew up in Springville and am currently living here while working part-time and attending Brigham Young University. I’m grateful for the chance to give back to a community that has given so much to me.

My family has been long-term residents of Mapleton, and every year, Pioneer Days is one of the highlights of our summer. We train together in hopes of setting a new personal best at the 5K and Fun Run. We always stake out the perfect spot for the parade to make sure all the grandkids collect plenty of candy. But most memorable of all is dancing the night away with friends at the Concert in the Park. To me, this community celebration means time well spent with the people I love!

SCARLET FULLMER

3rd Runner-Up

I am going to be attending Brigham Young University in the fall studying education and business then dedicating 18 months to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to serve a mission.

Pioneer Days means getting together to remember our ancestors. I have always looked forward to spending time with my friends and family and learning new things about pioneers. I love this special holiday that our precious city celebrates!

MAPLETON YOUTH CITY COUNCIL

BUILDING BRIDGES OF BELONGING

The Mapleton Youth City Council (MYCC) was created to give our youth an opportunity to represent their peers, serve their community, learn leadership skills, and create unity amongst youth in Mapleton. Each year between 50-60 local teenagers are selected to participate on the MYCC. Together, they plan and lead youth council meetings, participate in team building activities and leadership trainings, volunteer at many of our community events, and are involved in additional humanitarian work and service throughout our community.

A scholarship fund was created for graduating MYCC members who have shown growth through their leadership and community involvement while participating in the Mapleton Youth City Council. Our 2025 scholarship recipients are Sadie Boring, Taden Hansen, Luke Winward, and Trent Wilson. Congratulations, graduates!

Keep an eye out for our helpful MYCC teens at various activities throughout our Pioneer Days celebration! Under the direction of Mackenzie Boring, they

also volunteer their time before and during the annual events like Chalk the Walk, Scarecrow Spectacular, Splash of Color, and Lights On Festival. The MYCC has adopted a goal to engage all of Mapleton’s teens through their moto “Building Bridges of Belonging.”

GRAND MARSHALS

STEVE AND LAVEE WISCOMBE

Mapleton is proud to honor Steve and LaVee Wiscombe as the Grand Marshals of the 2025 parade. Their lives are a testament to hard work, community spirit, and enduring love—and their story is deeply woven into the fabric of our town.

Steve was born and raised in Mapleton, the son of Elmer and Mary Wiscombe. His family’s roots stretch back to the early pioneers of Mapleton and Springville, and he carries that heritage with pride. From a young age, Steve split his summers between the family ranch in Diamond Fork and the farm in Mapleton, helping with the daily work of moving cattle and growing crops. The Wiscombes planted sweet peas, corn, grain, alfalfa, beans, sugar beets, and potatoes. Riding horses, milking cows, hauling hay— these weren’t just chores; they were his most cherished moments spent alongside his dad, whom he deeply admired.

LaVee grew up in Escalante, Utah, the daughter of Fay and Ariel Alvey. Her upbringing mirrored Steve’s in many ways—rural life, plenty of hard work, and a strong sense of family. She also worked as a waitress from the age of 13 until she moved away and got married.

The two met a little later in life and blended their young families into one. In 1972, Steve and LaVee were married and began building their home together on Maple Street, where they’ve lived for the past 52 years. Together, they’ve raised seven children and now

enjoy the blessings of 28 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren.

The Wiscombes have never shied away from giving back to the community. Steve served two terms on the Mapleton Planning Commission and coached both boys’ baseball and girls’ softball for more seasons than he can count. He also guided countless Eagle Scout projects—four completed by his own sons and many others in the community. Some of these included the creation of the Maple Canyon Trail through Whiting Park and contributions to the Great Western Trail, which he worked on for many years. An avid outdoorsman, Steve has spent countless hours hiking, hunting, fishing, and riding through the mountains he loves.

LaVee’s contributions are equally significant. In 1974, while eight months pregnant, she helped organize the 24th of July parade. She famously persuaded the Springville High School Band to join the festivities for the first time—a tradition that has continued ever since. Over the years, she helped plan celebrations, purchased food in bulk, flipped burgers, and worked with Steve and friends to ensure safety—often by sleeping overnight at the park. Their dedication helped shape the beloved Pioneer Days events we all enjoy today.

After graduating from Brigham Young University, Steve began his 30-year career at the phone company. He later drove a side-dump truck simply “because it sounded

fun.” LaVee worked during those same 30 years for an eye doctor and at Workforce Services.

In retirement, they served an 18-month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Heber Valley Camp. They traded in horses for four-wheelers and an RV, later upgrading to a side-by-side, and spent 15 winters in Mexico and Yuma with dear friends. LaVee is also an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, preserving the stories of those who came before.

Steve and LaVee Wiscombe are pillars of Mapleton—a couple whose lives have been defined by faith, family, friendship, and a deep love for this town. They’ve shown us what it means to work hard, to serve quietly and humbly, and to live joyfully.

Congratulations, Steve and LaVee, on being named our 2025 Grand Marshals. Mapleton is lucky to call you our own.

ANNE AND RICHARD GAPPMAYER

Eighty-eight years ago, Anne Wiscombe Gappmayer was born in a two-room house in Mapleton, the oldest child of Mary Johnson Wiscombe and James Elmer Wiscombe. The house was the same house her dad Elmer was born in several years earlier. The house had no indoor plumbing, and the family carried water to the house from an outside tap a few feet from the front door.

Mary and Elmer had five children before Elmer, with the help of builder Lorne Nielsen, built a sturdy brick house for the family on the same property, complete with indoor plumbing and a coal stove. Elmer dug the basement for the house using an implement called a slip scraper, which was pulled by a horse. It was the same implement Elmer and his brother Joe used to dig the basement for the white church on Maple Street. Anne was baptized in the font in that basement dug by her dad.

Anne has many fond memories growing up in Mapleton. She had a wonderful time working on the family farm, picking corn, weeding corn and beets, and thinning and hoeing beets. She remembers how hard her dad, Elmer, and her Uncle Joe labored together on the farm. They worked all day in the fields, and when work was done, they would meet at the old barn for a smoke and a nightly visit. One day when Anne was picking corn with her cousin, she felt a sharp pain in her foot. She’d stepped on a porcupine! Her dad, Uncle Joe, and the dog chased after the porcupine. Her dad ended up plucking quills from Anne’s foot and the dog’s snout with a pair of pliers.

The family worked the farm six

days a week, and on Sundays, Anne and her brothers, Jim and Steve, would head to the city park to organize a neighborhood baseball game. When she was a teenager, Mapleton had grown enough that the local LDS ward was split, which was very traumatic for everyone. But Anne and her friends stayed close. Mapleton has always been a close-knit community.

Anne graduated from Springville High in 1955 and worked summers at Bryce Canyon to pay for college. She graduated with a degree in elementary education in 1959. Anne’s mother passed away when Anne was 23, besides running her own home, she helped her siblings and dad many times with things like cleaning, farm chores, and canning.

Anne married Richard Gappmayer after graduation, and Richard eventually built two houses for them in Orem, where they lived for almost forty years. Richard taught Math at Payson Junior High and Provo High School then worked as a computer programmer for DHI, Inc. and was secretary of the Provo Bench Canal Company. Anne taught first grade for three years in Nebo School District then retired to raise her family. When her youngest daughter was in second grade, Anne returned to teaching and taught at Bonneville Elementary in Orem for seventeen years. Anne’s students adored her. On one occasion she had a student who was trying to raise money to play on a soccer team, Anne had him come to her house and pick fruit from the orchard so he could sell it to raise the funds. Another student would stop by the house every so often to ask if Mrs. Gap-

pmayer could come out and play.

Richard and Anne have six daughters, 21 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Anne has the best sense of humor, is outrageously wise and patient, and lives with cheerful resilience. Her children and grandchildren simply adore her. She has always been the ideal mother and an even better grandmother.

Twenty-five years ago, when Anne and Richard retired, they moved back to Mapleton near the east bench, out by the old open canal where the older boys went to swim when Anne was a girl. They have lived there ever since.

Richard and Anne are honored to be Grand Marshals of the Mapleton Parade. With its stunning mountain views, small-town atmosphere, and delightful people, Anne calls Mapleton “a little bit of heaven.” Richard and Anne are especially pleased and thrilled to share the honor with Anne’s brother Steve Wiscombe and his wife, LaVee, whom they love very much.
