Welcome to Mapleton City’s annual Pioneer Days! Our staff’s preparation for this year’s celebration began in August 2023, and we look forward to an exciting week filled with family fun, community connection, and the opportunity to make lasting memories together.
This Pioneer Days, we remember Collin Allan, a 90-year-old lifelong Mapleton resident who passed away earlier this year. After marrying his sweetheart, Peggie, in 1957, they built a home across the street from the one he grew up in, and he lived there for the rest of his life. Collin exemplified pioneer spirit. He served nine years on Mapleton City’s Plan-
ning Commission, 12 years on the City Council, and many additional years involved in our community in a variety of ways.
In the early stages of our City rebrand last year, we brought professionals in to gather residents’ perspectives towards life in Mapleton. Collin was interviewed in this process and shared how he saw Mapleton change throughout his life. He watched our city’s population increase tenfold and transform from farmland to a rural bedroom community, but the small town feeling of community never changed. In his own words, Collin “always felt that there was some kind of a special spirit in Mapleton that was different than
other places - more supportive, more friendly. It’s a spirit of good neighbors and respecting each other.”
This year’s Pioneer Days theme is, “Our Heritage. Forever in Our Hearts.” Our focus, in line with Collin’s insights, is to celebrate the community values our area’s pioneer settlers prioritized and have been maintained through today. Mapleton is a small town with a big heart because of those who came before us. They laid the groundwork for the great things that continue to take place in Mapleton and are reflected in our City’s core values: small town feeling, connection, active lifestyle, open space, service, and heritage.
As you participate in our Pioneer Days events this year, we invite you to remember our community’s heritage and pioneer values. Find opportunities to serve, get to know, and connect with each other. Research our community’s (and your family’s) heritage, and share those stories with a younger generation. Take advantage of Mapleton’s open space and accessible active lifestyle by enjoying time with your families in our parks and on the trail.
We also invite you to join us for our new Pioneer Days events this year. Take your family to learn how to play disc golf, enter our spikeball tournament, and enjoy some local talent at our Mapleton’s Got Talent night. We wish you a safe and happy Pioneer Days and look forward to celebrating with you.
- MAYOR DALLAS HAKES
OUR HERITAGE, FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS.
Like so many of our community members, Mapleton serves as our happy refuge, safe place, and home. Of course, home is where the heart is. For almost two decades, our family has called Mapleton home, and the mountain has a special place in our heart. As our community continues to
grow with more and more people moving in, we want to never forget Mapleton’s (originally called “Union Bench”) heritage. Pioneer Days gives us a week of reflection and togetherness each year to unite as a community and share our love of our roots, Mapleton’s small town
feeling, and our beautiful mountain.
When choosing this year’s Pioneer Days theme (“Our Heritage, Forever in Our Hearts.”), the first two things our committee thought of were Maple Mountain (as it is lovingly referred to) and hearts (as our new city motto is “Small Town. Big Heart.”). Mapleton’s foundational heritage was established by hard working families from all over the world with different religious backgrounds who fell in love with this area just as we all have.
We hope you take some time during this week’s celebration to reflect with your family about why and what brought you to Mapleton. We also encourage you to take part in the many offerings we have planned to connect with neighbors, family, and friends - both new and old. Though our town’s name was changed from Union Bench, may we be unified as a community and give thanks for the founding families that cultivated this beautiful place we call home.
Our heritage, forever in our hearts. Happy Pioneer Days! Enjoy and May God Bless.

BUILDING BRIDGES OF BELONGING
The Mapleton Youth City Council (MYCC) was created to give our youth an opportunity to represent their peers, serve their community, learn leadership skills, and create unity amongst youth in Mapleton. Each year, between 40 and 50 local teenagers are selected to participate on the MYCC. Together, they plan and lead youth council meetings, participate in team building activities and leadership trainings, volunteer at many of our community events, and are involved in additional humanitarian work and service throughout our community.
New this year, we have started a scholarship fund for graduating MYCC members who have shown growth through their leadership and community involvement while participating in the Mapleton City Youth Council. Our 2024 scholarship recipients are Della Wilkins, Joanna McClellan, Kennedee Gillette, and Sydney Jackson. Congratulations, graduates!
Keep an eye out for our helpful MYCC teens in their blue shirts at various events throughout our Pioneer Days celebration! Under the direction of Mackenzie Boring, they also volunteer their time before and during other annual
events like Chalk the Walk, Scarecrow Festival, and Lights On holiday event. They also learn valuable leadership and teamwork skills by planning and running the MYCC Summer Kids’ Camp each year - a much-anticipated event for many of our town’s elementary-aged kids.
This year, MYCC has adopted a goal to engage all of Mapleton’s teens through our motto, “Building Bridges of Belonging.” We look forward to hosting our first city-wide teen event in August. Stay tuned for more details coming soon!

GRAND MARSHALS
ALAN AND DONNA ELLIS
Congratulations to our 2024 Grand Marshals, Alan and Donna Ellis!
Born and raised in Mapleton, Alan comes from a long line of proud Mapleton residents. His great grandparents, Hannibal and Ellen Harmer, were early settlers to the area and built one of the first homes in Mapleton. Alan is the fifth generation to live in that little white house on the corner of 1600 South Main Street. His parents were Ross and Cora Ellis,
and he has many fond memories growing up in Mapleton.
At a young age, Alan mowed lawns and worked on the farms and in the orchards. He knew he had made it big when he was hired by the irrigation company as a ditch cleaner making $2.00 an hour.
Donna was born and raised in Springville. Her parents were Wilford and Venice Westman. She and Alan met at Springville
High School and have been married for 53 years. They have five children, 21 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren who all live right here in the Mapleton/ Springville community. Alan and Donna have loved raising their family in Mapleton. It’s all they’ve ever known - it’s home.
Alan and Donna are very service-oriented people. They serve their family and friends, have held various callings in their church, and actively participated
in the community. Donna spent countless hours volunteering in her kids’ classrooms, at school functions, and helping with sports teams.
Donna loves celebrating Pioneer Days. In 1987, she was asked to organize the entire parade and did a fabulous job. In 2002, she and Alan were called to be the event chairs of Pioneer Days and, with their committee, organized a wonderful day for Mapleton. One of Donna’s favorite Pioneer Days memo-
ries is when she and her walking friends won the Pioneer Day 5K!
Alan served in the community while their boys were growing up as a baseball coach for over 12 years. Later, he was a board member of the Mapleton Irrigation Company and served a term as President. Alan also was an owner of Western Quality Concrete, Inc. here in Mapleton for 30 years. He had a hobby of drag racing and was named a World Champion in 2013.
In 2018, Donna suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm and major stroke. Alan retired from work and hobbies to spend every day caring for her. Their life looks different now, but they enjoy all the time they get to spend together and with their family.
Alan and Donna are so grateful for this community and their friends and family here. They love Mapleton and are honored to be named the 2024 Pioneer Days Grand Marshals.
