MAYOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to our 2022 Pioneer Days Celebration! This year’s theme, “Mapleton Through the Decades,” allows us to reflect on our city’s history and the people and principles that have shaped our community into what it is today. Mapleton was originally called Union Bench, and its earliest settlers had to rely on each other for safety and survival. They had to figure out how to obtain water from both Mapleton and Hobble Creek Canyons, farm the untamed land and hard soil, and establish strong roots - both literally and figuratively.

The seeds sown by Mapleton’s early settlers are still being harvested today. As they worked together to navigate various difficulties and adapt to the elements, they developed a tight-knit sense of community. This is seen in the stories told by some of our long-time residents and neighbors. For example, when the thresher came to town, groups of people moved along with it to help friends and neighbors with their harvest. When the work was complete, picnic lunches and laughter would be shared.

Other memories include John Holley and Fay Jensen’s contributions to the sense of community in Mapleton. John Holley owned a gas station and shop in town.

People would stop by for a quick treat and stay for his kindness and hospitality. Fay Jensen drove an old blue Edsel and was the town cop, coroner, and anything else the town needed. He was a beloved civil servant, and many speculate that he never wrote a single ticket.

Over time, people in our community have come and gone.

Mapleton has grown and evolved in various ways. Many of the challenges our city faces today are very different from those the early settlers experienced. Ours are not necessarily a matter of individual survival, but how to best navigate the growth and integration of new ideas and experiences into the fabric of our community. Unlike many modern American cities, Mapleton’s community -mindedness has remained. We are lucky to witness it every day as we watch our residents interact with each other.

This Pioneer Day, as we celebrate our state’s pioneer heritage, we encourage you to also remember and learn about those early families that had the courage, grit, and commitment to build something special in Mapleton. The best way to honor their legacy is to uphold the sense of unity they fostered. Let’s continue to reap what Mapleton’s early settlers sowed as we serve and look out for each other. We also encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity to participate in our Pioneer Days events this year. Spend quality time with your family, engage in our community, and make lasting memories. We wish you a safe and joyful celebration.

GRAND MARSHALS Jim and Mary Fojtek have lived in Mapleton for the past 11 years, in Mary’s childhood home on 800 North. They are not strangers to Mapleton, however, since Mary and her ten siblings were raised in the home that her great-grandfather, Richard Lovell Mendenhall, Sr. built. Mary attended Mapleton Elementary School and graduated from Springville High School, then continued her education at BYU. After two years, seeking adventure, she got a summer job in Washington, D.C. with the Peace Corps in the administration department compiling information from the worldwide volunteers.

Jim was born in Port Neches, a small community in southeast Texas. Port Neches is located on the Neches River, that eventually empties into the Gulf of Mexico. This river is used by ships and barges to bring oil produce to the oil refineries that are in multiple counties.

Nearly everyone who lives there has a connection to the oil companies, and Jim was no exception - both of his parents worked for the refinery. He spent his days after school and in the summer at his grandparents’ local bike shop. He loved music and played trumpet in the high school symphony, concert, jazz, and marching bands and went on to play at the University of Texas, in the Show Band of the Southwest.

Jim registered for the Draft Board when he was 18 because of the Vietnam War. In March

1966, he joined the USAF. He scored highly on the aptitude testing and was told he could have any job he wanted. His career ambition was to become a pharmacist, so he chose to be a medic. After his basic and medical training in Texas, he was sent to Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. where he was trained as a surgical scrub nurse in the field of urology.

Jim was stationed at Andrews

AFB the same summer that Mary was working at the Peace Corps. Jim’s roommate convinced him to drive a group of friends (which included Mary Hjorth) on a beach trip. As introductions were made, it was obvious that no one could pronounce either of their last names, so they introduced themselves as ‘Just Jim’ and ‘Just Mary.’ This gave them the opportunity to have fun with their names and get to know each other.

Jim received orders to go to Vietnam. At the end of his yearlong assignment and his return home from the war, Jim and Mary were married and began their lives together. Jim was accepted to the Air Force Physician Assistants (PA) training program. PAs were new to the medical profession at this time, and the training was intense. His hard work paid off, and he earned his degree from the University of Nebraska and his national certification as a Physician Assistant. Jim also later earned a nursing degree.

In 1978, Jim accepted a commission as an Air Force Officer as a Physician Assistant. After retiring from the air force in 1988, hd continued to work as a PA in private practices in the Ogden area, at Bear Lake, and finished his career, after 45 years of medical service, as a contractor at the Deseret Chemical Depot/Tooele Army Depot.

During their Air Force service, the Fojtek’s five children were born in four different states and Air Force bases around the United States. They also have 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, with two more coming in the fall. Sadly, their 37-year-old son, Daryl, passed away in 2015.

Their years in the Air Force, though difficult, proved to be full of growth in so many ways.

Mary’s motto was, “if a mother’s place is in the home, why am I always in the car?!” She was a stay-at-home-mom and

volunteered for every project that came along - PTA, Officers’ Wife Club activities, teaching genealogy classes at the base for the retired population, raising the kids, sewing their clothes, the list goes on and on!

Coming home to Mapleton wasn’t on Jim and Mary’s radar until Mary had a dream about moving back to her old childhood home. In her dreams, she envisioned in great detail how the house remodel would look.

When she presented the plan to Jim, he told he it wasn’t a dream, but a “nightmare!” Finally, at a family meeting with

her siblings, they declared, “Our ancestors sacrificed to get here.

Our grandparents sacrificed to build this home. It is our job to preserve it.” With help from Mary’s siblings, she and Jim finally purchased and began remodeling the home in 2007.

The Fojteks moved into their dream home in 2011.

The remodel lacked one thing: a quilting room. Mary’s father’s original office behind the house was converted into what is affectionately known

as the “Hen House” because it is adorned with her whimsical collection of chickens and quilting creations. Quilting has been an important part of Mary’s life for decades. She and her sister borrowed money from their father and started a quilting business. As time went on, more of her sisters got involved, and they taught quilting classes, made quilts for charity groups, and had quilting retreats at the Fojtek’s Bear Lake home. Mary said, “It’s not about the quilting, it’s about the association.”

Jim and Mary have served and engaged in the Mapleton Community in a variety of capacities.

Most recently, Mary served as the chair of the Mapleton Historical Society Committee. The Fojteks were instrumental forces in bringing our Historic Old Towne Square in Mapleton City Park to fruition. They worked together with family members to gather wood, artifacts, stories, tools, horses, forges, and many other things to furnish the buildings.

They have been overwhelmed by the community’s support, generosity, and kindness in this endeavor.

Mapleton is Jim and Mary’s home and they love being here. We appreciate their great contributions to our community, and we are honored to recognize their legacy as Grand Marshals at this year’s Pioneer Days Celebration.

PICKLEBALL TOURNAMENT

Come enjoy Mapleton City’s 14 pickleball courts and kick off the Pioneer Days Celebration!

Our second annual pickleball tournament will include Men’s, Women’s, Mixed, and Youth brackets.

The tournament will begin with Pool Play on Sat., July 16. Each team will have a three-game guarantee in a random Pool Play bracket. The seeding from that Saturday’s Pool Play will determine the tournament brackets. The single-elimination bracket play will be played on the evening of Tues., July 19.

PIONEER SUNSET IN THE PARK

Bring your blankets and chairs to celebrate the founding families that have helped carve Mapleton into what it is today. This year’s speakers include Collin Allan, the Carnessca family, and Gary Antinino, along with a couple of musical numbers. 5K / FUN RUN

This is a flat, fast course that winds through the streets of beautiful Mapleton. The onemile Fun Run will begin at 7:00am, and the 5K will start at 7:30am. The starting/finish line is right in front of the City Building (125 W. 400 N.). Parking is available near the starting line.

The races will be professionally timed, and awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each age group. Scan the QR code to learn more.

Our annual Pioneer Days parade will be held on Sat., July 23, beginning at 9:00am. This year’s parade will celebrate the theme, “Mapleton Through the Decades.” Come enjoy floats, marching bands, antique vehicles, Primaries, and more as they honor our home, heritage, and happiness and make their way through Mapleton.

PARADE ROUTE

The parade will begin at Mapleton Junior High School, travel west on 1200 North to Main Street, travel south on Main Street to Maple Street, and end at Mapleton Elementary School.

ROAD CLOSURES

The parade route will close at 8:45 a.m. The following road closures will also take place: • 1200 North from 200 West to Main Street (8:45am through the end of the parade) • 400 North from 300 West to Main Street (6:30 a.m. through the end of the parade) • Maple Street from Main Street to 300 West (8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)

FOOD TRUCKS 5:00PM-9:00PM

Food trucks and vendors will be lined up in the parking lot on the northeast side of the park.

Over 20 of your favorite food trucks and vendors will be there to offer a variety of selections to feed the whole family.

PING PONG DROP 6:30PM - 7:00PM

Enter our annual helicopter ping pong ball drop, sponsored

by Trapnell Orthodontics, for a chance to win some awesome prizes! Children ages 4-14 are invited to register and participate.

Ping pong drop registration is in-person only at the following times and locations: Parks and Recreation Office 125 W. 400 N., Downstairs Mon., June 13 - Wed., July 20 Hours: M-Th 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Tournament Events Ira Allan Sports Park Mon., July 18 - Wed., July 20 Hours: 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Mapleton City Park Northeast corner of the park Sat. July 23 Hours: 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

No registration will be offered at Ira Allan Sports Park the night of July 23.

GROOVE MERCHANTS CONCERT 8:00PM - 9:45PM

The Groove Merchants are the gold standard of professional party bands. They were named the Best of State for Party/Cover Band & Specialty Act seven consecutive years from 20132019. Their talent and energy guarantee an entertainment experience like no other!

FIREWORK SHOW 10:00PM-11:00PM

After the concert, Firestorm Pyrotechnics will paint the night sky with a brilliant array of colors. Each shell is hand selected and placed to a custom selection of music. This show is sure to take your breath away!

ROAD CLOSURES

The following road closures will take place: • 800 West from 1600 South to Park Meadows Drive (2:00 p.m. through the end of the event) • 1600 South from Hwy 89 to 800 West: • East traffic only for pedestrian walkway (4:00 p.m. through the start of the fireworks) • West traffic only for pedestrian walkway (after the fireworks) Free public parking will be available in the field at approx. 1400 West 1600 South, and a public walkway will be along 1600 South from 800 West to 1400 West. A drop-off zone will be available at 800 West on 1600 South.
