zion apostolic P3 church is 80 years!

The Mpumalanga MEC for Health, Ms Sasekani Manzini together with the Executive Mayor of Dipaleseng Local Municipality, Councillor Mafunda Makhubu, flanked by the member of National Council of Provinces, Ms Audrey Maleka broke ground at the SOD turning event of the Balfour Community Health Centre (CHC) on Friday, October 18.

The construction of the mini hospital is a long awaited project given the dire need of the community of Dipaleseng, having to travel to neighbouring towns to access medical care and treatment provided at hospitals. “When an ambulance picks us up, we have to either choose to go to Heidelberg or Standerton to reach the nearest hospital,” said a resident in Siyathemba township. “CSE does not ‘sexualise’ kids” The Basic Education Department (DBE) has rejected what it calls the “misrepresentation of facts regarding some of the content” in its Life Orientation subject. The department repeated to say that no new content has been added to the Life Orientation subject in schools, but added that Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) has been part of the curriculum since the year 2000. CSE seeks to provide learners with sexual education while addressing the social ills such as teenage pregnancy and sexual violence that exist in society. The department rejected the notion that CSE encourages sexual behaviour in schoolchildren. “We have noted with concern that a certain organization persists in misleading the public by publishing the wrong information resulting in unnecessary confusion and panic among South Africans. We have done our best to help by providing information but they refuse to understand and instead choose to mislead the public,” said DBE spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga. The organization which is referred to as FORSA, stated that they have accessed the subject content which

our Government plans to roll out in schools next year, and exposing what has been done under the greatest cover of secrecy. “To those parents who thought we were making a lot of noise for nothing about this CSE planned for 2020 please see the actual curriculum, and join in the fight to stop the state imposed immorality on our children,” said the organization in a statement meant to reach parents countrywide. The FORSA group also stated that for each grade, they will engage in ‘sexualising’ activities. “In Grade 4: Kids will engage in group discussions to identify each other's “private parts”. Grade 5's will be taught – risks of intrusive lesbian relationships, homosexual molestation and sexual assault. Grade 6’s will be asked their views on sexting topless photos on WhatsApp,” says the statement which continues the so-called lesson plans until Grade 9. The message has been in circulation on various social media networks, mainly on Whatsapp and Facebook. “It is mischievous to pull one-liners from the scripted lesson plans to create improper and baseless impressions about the curriculum. The lessons focus on teaching about the respect for self, for the body of

3

others; and most importantly, for children to identify inappropriate physical interactions,” said Mhlanga. The department's statement comes as the department plans to roll out new Life Orientation textbooks next year. Last month, the Education department clarified the matter and went further to provide details of what is contained in the sexuality section of the curriculum. “It is unfortunate and bordering on mischievous that certain organisations persist to misinform the public with outdated lesson plans (Used during the pilot phase) that have been shared across public platforms with the view to not only misinform but discredit the departments comprehensive plan,” said Mhlanga. According to the department, the core aim of the CSE is to ensure that learners build an understanding of concepts, content, values and attitudes related to sexuality, sexual behavior change as well as leading safe and healthy lives. “The department is extremely concerned that there seems to be lower sexual debut and increasing risky sexual behaviour amongst adolescents and HIV prevention knowledge has declined amongst learners,” said Mhlanga.

A male was fatally shot in his vehicle and two of his friends injured in Barkley street, Nigel on October 26. “It is alleged that two friends driving in a white Mazda 2 arrived at a house in Nigel to collect another friend. As they got back inside the vehicle, a white VW polo stopped next to the driveway and that’s when an unknown male got out and started shooting at them,” said police spokesperson Sargeant Harry Manaka.

WINNER OF 2019 GAUTENG SPORTS AWARDS: Community Media of The Year

Springboks are World Champs! President Cyril Ramaphosa with Cabinet Ministers and the Springboks rugby team during the Springboks rugby team Welcome at the Union Buildings. The visit to the Union Buildings by the national team signifies the start of the Rugby World Champions’ National Trophy Tour. For the third time, the coveted Webb Elli trophy will be held by South Africa. This is after their heroic battle agains England in the finals of the Rugby World Cup. The 2019 Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok team arrived to a befitting heroes’ welcome at the Union Buildings, ahead of their muchanticipated trophy tour. The red carpet was rolled out at the official seat of government for the world champions, who met President Cyril Ramaphosa on the day they kicked-off

their nationwide trophy tour. It was a proud moment for the scores of South Africans, who made their way to the Union Buildings to meet the men whose showing in Yokohama has evoked a sense of national pride and cohesion reminiscent of the Boks’ World Cup win of 1995.

On Thursday (November 7), the Boks -- captained by Siyamthanda Kolisi and led by coach Rassie Erasmus -- were welcomed by hundreds of eager South Africans in the capital city, all hoping to catch a glimpse of the team who rose against all odds to claim victory in Japan.

Sports Portfolio committee calls for more funding for federations, councils! The Gauteng Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation has called for more funding for local sports federations and councils in the province. The committee’s chairperson, Honorable William Matsheke (on behalf of the Portfolio Committee) indicated during the Gauteng Sport Confederation Strategic Planning Session that the current budget allocation to the Gauteng Sport Confederation of R5,3 Million as part of the Conditional Grant allocation for partnerships with community structures for recreational activities and school sport structures amongst others is not sufficient compared to other Provinces considering the size of the population of Gauteng. The committee was invited invited by the Gauteng Sport Confederation to their Strategic Planning Session held on Saturday, October 12 as part of its responsibilities of oversight and scrutiny on departmental programs. The Portfolio Committee called upon the department to re-look at the budget allocation to the Gauteng Sports Confederation as the current budget allocation is minimal for the confederation to adhere to its mandate as indicated on the National Sports and Recreation Plan Vision 2030.

The Committee further calls upon the department to redirect the transfers that they are currently transferring directly to clubs and affiliates of the confederation to be redirected to the confederation for improved monitoring and evaluation by the confederation as highlighted by the National Sport and Recreation Plan. “By doing such the department will avoid a situation where there are duplication of resources and previously disadvantaged sporting codes will also get an equal share of the transfers as the current system favours the previously advantaged sporting codes,” said the chairperson. The Chairperson further indicated that funding for sports in Gauteng is too fragmented as there is a lot of funding that goes to individual clubs or associations and therefore indicated that there is a need for these funds to be channelled to Gauteng Sport Confederation since they are experts in sport development. According toThe National Sport and Recreation Plan Vision 2030: Strategic Objectives, objective 11 states the government will integrate the development of South African Sport at Provincial and local levels through sports councils and confederations. Among the key activities of the implementation of such a goal, the provincial government

through the provincial sport department guided by SASCOC should ensure that sports councils/ confederations are structured and operational at local, regional and provincial levels. The Provincial department, in this instance, the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation should provide seed and incubation funding for the Provincial Sport Council/Confederation. It should also ensure that Councils/Confederations act as an interface to support the linking of hubs/clubs with federations, municipalities, civil society structures and NGOs to ensure integration of sports programs and to avoid duplication of resources.

“The current budget allocation to the Gauteng Sport Confederation of R5,3 Million as part of the Conditional Grant allocation for partnerships with community structures for recreational activities and school sport structures amongst others....” Gauteng Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation chairperson, Hon. William Matsheke

Gauteng celebrates the living legacy of Matthew Goniwe! Educators from all corridors of the province gathered to honour excellence in teaching over the past year. The Gauteng Department of Education organized the 20th annual National Teaching Awards, combined with the 2019 Matthew Goniwe Memorial Lecture. This year’s ceremony was marked with the theme, ‘The Living Legacy of Matthew Goniwe: The future of Education in the 4IR era.’ Being both an educator and a freedom fighter during the dark days of apartheid, Matthew Goniwe along with three of his compatriots Sicelo Mhlawuli, Sparrow Mkhonto, and Fort Calata (known as the Cradock Four), were remembered during the ceremony. Delivering the Matthew Goniwe Memorial Lecture, Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi emphasized the fact that the dark days of a black child being relegated in getting quality education are over. “Even though they preferred to stop you, we prefer to continue with you. We are here to honour those teachers that

symbolize the spirit of Matthew Goniwe. We are here to honour those who continue to teach even when their classes are overcrowded. We honour the teachers who continue to get paid peanuts while being told their retirement is coming,” said Lesufi. He said that the awards are meant to honour the selfless teacher who look at the output of educated learners instead of a better salary. He also told the guests that school resources must be equally shared across all schools, public or private. “Gone are the days, and we must all agree, that all our children must write one examination because they are in one country. Lesufi says the notion that rich kids only write IEB (Independent Examination Board) and those from a poor background write the NSC (National Senior Certificate) exams must end, as both exams are adjudicated by Umalusi and both have the same 80% pass mark. “There is no special university for IEB students. If

As part of the lecture in honour of the late Goniwe, MEC Panyaza emphasized the future of education for the children of Gauteng and the country. “We want our children to be prepared for the future. We want our children to understand one important aspect, that gone are the days that our children in ECDs (Early Childhood Development centres) arrive and song poems, eat umdogo (porridge), sleep and go home. We will put proper ECDs in our communities. You can never fix it up there if you haven’t done anything down there,” he said to the jubilation of teachers. MEC sent his word of gratitude to the ECD facilitators around the province for their work. “As part of the Education department I am leading, we want to make a commitment to you ECD teachers that we will pay for you to study at any university and be trained, because without you there is no future,” he said. The commitment of building

All of these initiatives the MEC said it was an ‘obsession’ to honour the late struggle hero and liberation educator, Goniwe, who strove to improve the general living conditions of the his people. In concluding his address, the MEC sent a direct message to the families of the Cradock Four saying the heroes did not die in vain, but they have multiplied. “Inspired by them, not only what they did - but with a determination that never, never again will a black child suffer” he said. Beware of parcel delivery scam! The Post Office has warned the public about a parcel delivery scam designed to defraud them of their hard earned money. “Members of the public receive SMS messages informing them that a parcel could not be delivered to them because VAT needs to be paid on the parcel. A link on the SMS leads them to a web page where they are requested to deposit money into a bank account,” it said recently. The SA Post Office does not require customers to make any bank deposit before parcels are released. If VAT or any other fees are payable on a parcel, this is paid at the time when the par-

cel is delivered or collected. The customer will receive a valid receipt for this payment. Where the Post Office has the cellphone number of the recipient, the customer will receive a text message requesting him or her to collect the parcel at a specific Post Office branch. The SMS will not request that funds be deposited into an account. “The SA Post Office advises the public to ignore communication of this nature,” it said. The Post Office appealed to those that have information regarding the scam to call the police or the Post Office’s Crime buster Hotline on 0800 020 070.
