Ratanda protest ends in looting! Foreign-owned spaza shops closed after three day strike over unwanted rates, electricity cut-offs! What began as an unplanned protest ended in the looting of shops owned by foreign nationals in Ratanda township, south of Gauteng. These incidents come after the community staged protests on recently against the Lesedi Local Municipality for electricity and water cut-offs, irregular municipal billing etc. . Because of the confusion and the chaos surrounding the ongoing protest in the township, the people have lost control. The local waste transfer station was set alight and clouded the blocked R549 road with dark smoke. There were rumours and a picture circulating on social media that suggests a cou-

ple of foreign nationals have been killed in yesterday’s Ratanda strike, police confirmed that the information is not true. Reports suggest that the community members held the protest for three days straight, which have resulted in the incidents of looting and disruptions for commuters. Although the Lesedi municipality is blamed by some community members in the area, there has been no official communication condemning the protest and the criminal activities. The local political EFF party has distanced itself from the protest and have said their members are not involved. Police are at the scene with their hands full

as these incidents are occurring at very rapid rates. Local police arrested a number of suspected people for public violence and looting of spaza shops. Almost all of the shops belonging to Pakistani, Somali and Bangladeshi nationals were robbed. One supermarket at extension 7 was set alight after the looting ended. Despite the damages to properties and shops, it is believed that the foreign businesspeople will return to Ratanda and continue selling. Many confirm that the looting of their shops was the plans by criminals who took advantage of the protest.

Govt,Thokoza community unite against women & children abuse! Back in May this year, the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) was in shock after bodies of two young girls were found in an open veld in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni. The girls‚ aged eight (8) and nine (9); were last seen playing together and were reported missing to the police. As such, the Gauteng Department of Social Development HOD Thembeni Mhlongo led a march on Friday, August 31, to raise awareness against the killing of women and girls in Thokoza. The march which was in collaboration with City of Ekurhuleni and civil society organizations, started at Retention Dam next to R.P Maphanzela Primary School, where the bodies were found. Speaking to the community at Thokoza Auditorium, HOD Mhlongo said “As we mark the end of women’s month, we saw it befitting that we visit the community of Thokoza to raise awareness against the brutal killings of these young girls.” “We do not want our children to be murdered again.

We are working closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure that actions of this nature do not happen again in the area,” she added. Speaking on behalf of MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, MMC for Health and Social Development in Ekurhuleni Dorah Mlambo said “More than 65 young women were murdered by their immediate partners in Gauteng last year alone.” MMC Mlambo further highlighted events that occurred during the murder of Karabo Mokoena (22), Popi Qwabe (24), Bongeka Phungula (28), and Thembisile Yende (30). “The Gauteng Provincial Government through the Department of Social Development and Community Safety has various social intervention programmes to mobilise communities to act against gender based violence, and to ensure that women and girls live without any fear.” “Men must lead the fight against gender based violence,” she added.

Free Photography Classes For Beginners!

Follow in the footsteps of the late legendary photographer, Sam Nzima (pictured), who made a worldwide impact with his work during the apartheid era. Nzima’s iconic photograph of a dying Hector Pieterson (on June 16, 1976 during the Soweto uprisings) became a symbol of resistance against apartheid and the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in black schools. The veteran photographer Sam Nzima died on May 12 this year. He was known for his passion to grow the craft of photography, especially in young people. A passion for taking photos and the eagerness to lean new photography skills is all it takes to be part of the free photography beginners class offered by the City o f Ekurhuleni. The cut-off date for submitting applications is Friday, 14 September 2018. The classes will run from September 2018 until end of November 2018. Attempted murder at N3 freeway near Bergsig! On Tuesday, September 4, the Heidelberg Police opened an attempted murder case docket after a truck driver was shot on an left upper arm by unknown suspect. According to police, it is reported that the truck driver was travelling along N3 Freeway from Durban to Johannesburg, driving a white UD100 pulling a trailer. When the driver stopped, he was ordered to climb out of the truck.

Buy local goods online!

South Africa’s buy local advocacy organisation, Proudly South African, has launched its own online shopping site. Called the RSA Made website (www.rsamade.co.za), the ecommerce portal was launched on August 21 in Johannesburg. “Showcasing South Africa to the rest of the world, RSAMade is a proudly e-commerce web site which gives South African products the opportunity to be placed in the hands of local and global consumers. Partnered with Proudly South African, these two successful initiatives promote the manufacture and consumption of locally made goods,” says Proudly South African. Chairperson of the Proudly SA Board Howard Gabriel says the site can possibly attract new members. The RSA Made website provides an ecommerce platform for Proudly SA member companies to sell their goods and services. “Locally made products are of high quality. We are proud of the companies that produce these products and that the labour practices of these companies are good,” said Gabriel. The CEO of Proudly SA, Eustace Mashimbye (pictured) provided the context of why the RSA Made online shopping platform is important. He said the country’s triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality are the culprits. “Our role is to stimulate de mand for locally-made products,” he said. Mashimbye explained that having a ‘BuyLocal’ campaign is not new to South Africa. The country is inspired by countries that have used such initiatives to revive

their economies and create jobs. “We are battling with imports as they contribute to unemployment in the country. It’s time to take our place in the world market as we are the gateway to Africa,” he mentioned. A bulk of the products online will come from small businesses. Proudly SA CEO urged that Government must create an enabling environment so it is possible for small business to overcome challenges. While primarily serving South African citizens, Proudly South African also hopes there will be interest from international shoppers. The RSAMade site is set to rival the likes of Gumtree and Alibaba.com if it is a hit to the online shopping market. “The products that are on offer will be exclusively produced by South Africans. We heeded the call of South Africans in general, who say to us, for convenience purposes and also to know which products out there are proudly South African, how do we get them and how do we then buy them online,” said the Chief Financial Officer Happy Ngidi. Shoppers can browse and select their favourite local products and pay using the various method available (Visa/Mastercard or Bitcoin), delivery and shipment is handled by RSAMade on behalf of the vendor.

Social grant beneficiaries urged to exchange old cards!

Cabinet has strongly appealed to social grant beneficiaries to make the switch from the old South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) cards to the new gold card. The South African Post Office (SAPO) and SASSA are currently migrating social grant beneficiaries to a new gold SASSA card that is tailored to prevent illegal deductions on social grants. The new SASSA card operates fully within the national payment system and social grants beneficiaries can use it to make ATM and merchant cash withdrawals, free retail merchant purchases as well as to withdraw cash over the counter inside a Post Office. Briefing media on the outcomes of the Cabinet meeting held recently, Communications Minister Nomvula Mokonyane said SASSA has so far replaced about 5.5 million old cards with the new card, but “thousands still need to be exchanged”. Cabinet also welcomed the progress report

presented by Social Development Minister, Susan Shabangu, on the partnership between SASSA and SAPO to take over the payments of social grants from Cash Paymaster Services (CPS). Meanwhile, Cabinet condemned the theft of cables at one of the Post Office branches in Pretoria, which affected the payment of social grants. Cabinet appealed to the affected beneficiaries and urged South Africans to frown upon the selling of stolen goods. For further information, social grant beneficiaries can call the SASSA toll-free number on 0800 60 10 11 during office hours.

METROPOLIS: Gauteng hosts cities of the World!

Governors and officials from the world’s cities gathered to engage situations and solutions for the Metropolis Annual Meeting, which took place at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg (26-29 August). Gauteng Premier David Makhura opened the official event by motivating the delegates of the possibilities that cities have in the world development agenda. Metropolis World Congresses and Annual Meetings are the main opportunities to promote the major cities of the world. Hosted by a different Metropolis member every year, these events count on the presence of the key decision makers of the major cities and metropolitan areas of the world. Over 140 mayors and governors from cities across all continents of the world gathered at the meeting, including local mayors from municipalities in the Gauteng province. Opening the Metropolis Annual Meeting (nicknamed #GautengMAM2018), Gauteng premier and co-president of the Metropolis David Makhura said this meeting is of most importance in the future of mankind. “There are three reasons. The first reason is that we live in a time in which rapid urbanisation is one the dominant mega trends of this century. More than fifty per cent of the world population – translating into more than half of the global population – live in cities. Already, 60% of South Africans live in cities,” said Makhura. The other two reasons the host mentioned were that cities and city-regions have also become the major engines of the global and national economies; and that city-regions must transform into hubs of inclusive growth and development which offer a good quality of life to all. We in Africa and Asia have a particularly daunting task to ensure that cities take the centre stage in the structural transformation of Africa. The urban promise of a better life can be realised in Africa. According to Makhura, presently, cities account for 80% of the global GDP. “Sub-Saharan Africa is undergoing the largest wave of urban growth in history. Since the beginning of the century, Sub-Saharan Africa’s urban population grew by more than 200 million people.

Today 430 million people or 38% of the population of SubSaharan Africa lives in cities,” he said in his speech. Speaking of the challenges facing the local city region, Gauteng, Makhura said urbanization tops the list. “The Gauteng City-Region represents the best promise and the worst problems of urbanisation in Africa. We also have our own great exclusions that we are struggling to overcome. The legacy of apartheid spatial planning, the economic marginalisation of Black people and social exclusion of women and youth are some of the realities that face city and regional governors on a daily basis as we strive to construct a new post-apartheid society,” he said. Gauteng is home to 24% of South Africa’s population and over 200 000 people move into our province every year. Makhura says this places enormous pressure on municipalities and provincial government departments in terms of service delivery and infrastructure development, with particular reference to education, healthcare and housing. Last year, Premier David Makhura was appointed to serve as one of the co-presidents of the Board of Directors of Metropolis.

Metropolis is a global network of major cities and city regions that serves as a hub to explore issues including governance and concerns common to all big cities, metropolitan governments, regions, provinces and state governments.

The Gauteng Declaration by Metropolis Members - Inclusive Metropolitan Cities and City-Regions in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa (August 29, 2018): We are dedicated to the transformation of our institutions and the strengthening of governance systems in order to respond to the aspirations of a rapidly urbanising population; addressing urban sustainability challenges related to housing, infrastructure, basic services, climate change, food security and migrations; and ending violations of human rights... -full declaration on www.metropolis.org

The organisation has been in existence for 32 years and Gauteng has been a member since 2008. It currently represents the authorities of 138 great cities and metropolitan areas in Africa, America, Caribbean, Asia, Pacific and Europe. Speaking as one of the panelists under the topic of Inclusive Settlement Development, the Executive Mayor indicated that while the City of Ekurhuleni is rolling out serviced stands and rental stock projects as part of their strategies to provide adequate human settlements, the expropriation of undeveloped land is also another option. “We will tap into exploring options of expropriating land that has remained unused and undeveloped since 1994 in the interest of promoting inclusive human settlement,” Cllr Mzwandile Masina said. Among the projects that are currently underway that the Mayor alluded to, is the allocation of serviced stands so that communities living in congested informal settlements are settled in areas where their dignity is restored by having basic services, such as electricity, roads and water. Ekurhuleni has a target of providing 6 000 rental units during Masina’s term of office. According to the Mayor, this type are already finished and occupied at the Germiston city centre. This is to cater for residents who are not ready to buy a house, and those who previously had little means to live in the CBD, closer to work. The three day Metropolis Annual Meeting also included various discussion panels and events, some of the governors got an opportunity to see Gauteng’s top tourism destinations that represent the heritage of the locals. On day two of the #GautengMAM2018, the delegates visited and assisted with improvements at Iphuteng Primary School. These included paintings, renovations and gifts for the learners of the Alexandra-based school. Other local heads included mayors from all Gauteng departments, municipalities and members of SA Local Government Association, led by Parks Tau. Over 11 sessions of discussiions were held for a three day period, including sessions dedicated to the African cities and city-regions agenda.

High Tea for Lesedi women!

Joining the commemorations of the Centenary of Mama Albertina Sisulu, the Lesedi Local Municipality hosted a high-tea ceremony and lunch at the Heidelberg Town Hall. Themed “A Woman of Fortitude,” the event was made to honour the women at Lesedi for their dedication to serving the people in the area. All the guests matched the beautiful decorations that met them when they entered the hall. The high tea opened with a prayer from Pastor Bongi Cebo of Christ The Rock Ministries. Entertaining the ladies of Lesedi with live performances of well-known songs, Lulu Geez & The Band, did a great job in getting everyone on their feet. The hall’s atmosphere reached its climaz when one of Lulu’s songs made people cry. The dancing and singing was a memorable scene. Lesedi Executive Mayor, Cllr Lerato Maloka, welcomed the guests and said beautiful things about being a woman and gave some motivation to young ladies in attendance. Then Dr Bandile Masuku a Gynecologist & Obstetrician took to the stage. When a lesson in women health came, guests were taken by surprise with teachings about female body parts and genitals. The doctor then offered advise to those who needed clarity on certain issues. Overall, this event was well done by the Lesedi municipality and its organizers. The guests deserve this piece of memory from the Mapepeza team.
