Sebokeng massacre remembered after 28 years! “HISTORY SUBJECT TO BE COMPULSORY IN ALL PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS BY 2023!” - CLLR MAIKANE While many South Africans were focused on the first day of school on Wednesday (January 9), the Sedibeng community held a commemorative memorial lecture about the Zone 7 Sebokeng Night Vigil Massacre. The Sedibeng District Municipality hosted the event at the Mafatsane Hall in Evaton. The dark day which took place on the 12 January 1991, was set in Sebokeng’s Zone 7 section at Chris Nangalembe’night vigil. Comrades and mourners were gunned down mercilessly. More than 40 people lost their lives, with 30 injured. The memorial lecture was delivered on behalf of District Mayor Busi Modisakeng by Cllr Zaza Maikane. Opening with words by Credo Mutwa, “No Matter how dark the night may seem to be, No matter how angry the thunder storm, there is always a ray of light that can pierce those thunder clouds and that can make the night turn into day.” Councillor Maikane said the famous words of Credo Mutwa remind us, families and survivors that there is always a ‘ray of light’ and that is found inside the hearts of those who survived that fateful

night. She sent her deepest condolences to the community. In her speech, Cllr Maikane said she is reminded that the study of History has become a compulsory subject in the country’s classrooms and will soon replace Life Orientation for Grade 10 to 12 in 2023. She quoted the words of Education minister, Angie Motshekga to tell the community that events like the Zone 7 Massacre will be taught in public high schools soon. “Indeed, our children and grandchildren will have an opportunity to learn, remember and honour the contribution of men and women of Zone 7 Night Vigil Massacre. They will, as we are, to never take our democracy for granted,” she said. Along with this day of remembrance, the Sedibeng district has quite a number of important days and historical days in our region such as Human Rights Day (21 March), the Boipatong Massacre, the Signing of the Constitution, and the Vaal Uprisings to name a few. All these historical days are not only important to remind ourselves and share with others, but the realize the selfless contributions of our heroes and heroines

during our dark past. After the memorial lecture, guests lit up candles and sang sombre hymns that bought tears to many who remember their lost loved ones. Young people from the community were present and were urged to invite each other to attend such events, which impart their history from the source. A documentary of the Sebokeng Zone 7 Night Vigil Massacre was played for the guests and it showed a detailed account of what happened. In attendance were members of the Sedibeng Government, Khulumani Sup-

port Group, local religious and traditional leaders, families and the survivors of the massacre. The documentary features all the surviving comrades and mourners, religious leaders, community members who share their sides of the story where 42 people were murdered and many injured 28 years ago. On Friday morning, the Sedibeng District Municipality will head to the Evaton cemetery to pay homage to the victims of the Zone 7 Night Vigil Massacre and host yet another official event at the Masakeng Zone 7.

Gauteng broadens quality education offering with Menzi Primary! “WE DON’T WANT ANY LEARNER TO SIT AT HOME.” - MEC PANYAZA LESUFI Learners at the newly built Menzi Primary school kicked off the 2019 academic year with digital boards in front of them and tablets in hand. The state-of-the-art facility was officially opened by Gauteng Premier David Makhura on Wednesday, January 9. The green technology school, which is in the heart of Langaville in Tsakane township in Ekurhuleni, boasts facilities such as 33 smart classrooms, a Grade R block with five classrooms, two smart science labs, two smart multi-purpose rooms, a library and dining hall. Makhura was accompanied by Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi and Infrastructure MEC Jacob Mamabolo. Addressing community members at the official opening, Makhura said the school is an investment in the future of the country. “The start of the school year is about laying the foundation for a better future. We are investing in education a lot, especially in township schools. The investment we are making as a country is in these children. These children are the children that will be independent and build their own homes,” said the Premier.

Makhura hailed the opening of Menzi Primary as a measure to improve the quality of education in township schools. With a price tag of R105 508 403, Lesufi urged parents and community members to protect the newly constructed mega school infrastructure. “I am pleading with you to protect these schools. If you see someone vandalising these schools, report them to the police,” said Lesufi. In protecting the schools, Lesufi said the community would ensure that the learners of Menzi Primary school have a shot at competing in the imminent fourth industrial revolution. “These learners are part of the generation that will attend schools of specialisation. “They will participate in the fourth industrial revolution,” he said. To prepare for the fourth industrial revolution, Lesufi said his department will also unveil two schools of specialisation in the areas of maritime studies and the motor industry. In a bid to address high demand for space in Gauteng schools, the provincial Education Department announced that

Tshepisong, Mayfield and Centurion Primary Schools will also be opened this month. Allaying the fears of late applicants, Lesufi assured parents that his department is hard at work to place learners in classrooms.

“We don’t want any learner to sit at home. I want to thank my team, which is working hard to ensure that we process late applications and will ensure that by the end of January, all school-going learners are placed,” said Lesufi.

Golden Girls of Mzansi excell at the CAF Awards!

Head coach of the Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana, Desiree Ellis, and forward Thembi Kgatlana have thanked South Africa for the congratulatory messages and well wishes after lifting trophies at the 2018 CAF Awards held on Tuesday night (January 8) in Dakar, Senegal. Coach Ellis was named the CAF Women’s National Team Coach of the Year 2018 – becoming the first South African to win this award. 2018 was a year of re-writing the history books for Ellis – she was the first person to win the COSAFA Women’s Championship as both player and coach, and also the first coach to lead Banyana Banyana to FIFA World Cup qualification. “It was a surreal moment for me, I am truly humbled and blessed by the award – we don’t do things for awards and rewards but I suppose if the team does well, that is the outcome. It is a great moment for me but I have to give credit to my assistants – we strategise and come up with a plan, and it’s up to the players to execute the plan, so it is a collective effort by the entire team. I am also grateful to SAFA for having faith in us as female coaches in the national teams, A great end to the festive season with local football and great gathering of sport lovers at the Ratanda Stadium.
