La expresión dramática es sinónimo de revelación y nuevas experiencias. Buenos Aires es distinguida como ciudad dentro del ámbito cultural internacional por sus producciones teatrales. Miles de espectadores del interior del país y de Latinoamérica llegan a la Ciudad motivados por su vasta oferta teatral, tanto comercial como independiente. La edición 2013 del Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires (FIBA) ofrece una cartelera con lo mejor de las artes escénicas nacionales y diferentes propuestas internacionales. Cada dos años, este evento congrega a un enorme público: directores, actores, turistas y porteños se dan cita durante más de una semana. El teatro se despliega en Buenos Aires en distintos circuitos, tradicionales y alternativos: desde las salas de la avenida Corrientes y los reconocidos teatros que integran el Complejo Teatral de Buenos Aires hasta las salas del Abasto, Boedo, Almagro y Palermo. Hoy, además, la Usina del Arte al sur de la Ciudad se suma a este abanico de propuestas con un espléndido edificio y una programación de excelencia. Los invitamos a todos a compartir el fabuloso mundo del teatro en Buenos Aires.

— The dramatic expression is synonym of revelation and new experiences. Buenos Aires is a city distinguished in the international cultural field due to its theatrical productions. Thousands of spectators from the interior of the country and Latin America come to the city motivated by its wide theatrical offer, both commercial and independent. The 2013 edition of Buenos Aires International Festival (FIBA) offers a billboard with the best of national scenic arts and different international proposals. Every two years, this event brings together a great audience: directors, actors, tourists, and people from Buenos Aires who gather during more than a week. Theater spreads out in Buenos Aires in different circuits, traditional and alternatives: from the theaters of Corrientes Avenue and famous theaters that are part of the Buenos Aires Theatrical Complex to others in Abasto, Boedo, Almagro and Palermo. La acción comienza en el casamiento de Cynthia y Taylor. La hermana de la novia, también enamorada de Taylor, se encuentra, en un cruce verborrágico, con el amigo íntimo del novio. Resulta que éste también está enamorado de Taylor. Durante la trama se van revelando los cambios sustanciales que estos cuatro personajes sufren en sus vínculos y en sus vidas durante un año. A ellos se suma un quinto personaje, alguien diferenciado de los demás por ser un “alegre a conciencia que lucha a diario por sobrevivir”. Agustín Alezzo trae por primera vez a esta ciudad una pieza del dramaturgo Nicky Silver. En la búsqueda por comprender la diferencia entre el amor y la necesidad de amar y sentirse amado, las escenas alternan picos de dramatismo con humor. Hermanos, amigos de toda la vida, nuevos amigos, ex amantes, marido, esposa… Todos ellos en busca del amor. Es una historia de grandes pasiones sobre la cual el autor dice: “Todos estamos obligados a sostener nuestras pasiones no correspondidas, por eso todos mis personajes funcionan desde un lugar de extrema necesidad”. Sombras desde el jardín (The Maiden´s Prayer) se estrenó en el circuito OffBroadway en 1998 y ese mismo año fue nominada al “Outer Critics Circle Award”, premio del círculo de críticos para medios más allá del circuito de Broadway. Se representó también en varias ciudades de Estados Unidos, en Londres y en Canadá. A escala local, es la primera vez que en Buenos Aires desembarca una obra del autor nacido en los ´60, que reside actualmente en New York y escribió hasta la fecha unas quince obras. “El sello de Silver es evidente: actores que cautivan al público metiéndolos en cada situación y diálogos con frases enérgicas que se disparan en fuego cruzado. Una delgada, filosa y casi insignificante línea que traza entre la comedia y la tragedia. Las situaciones desnudan de forma tan radical a los personajes, que finalmente uno tiene la sensación de haberlos conocido hondamente”, define Alezzo. Y concluye: “El sabor que nos deja esta obra es de una intensa conmoción, al advertir que esos personajes podrían ser nosotros mismos o muchas otras personas que hemos conocido a través de nuestras vidas”. • Encontrá la destacada en la página 88. 14

Directed by Agustín Alezzo, a play that explores the human relationships from the pen of the North American Nicky Silver. The opening was the first weekend of August at Losada Auditorium. The action starts at Cynthia and Taylor weeding. The bride’s sister, also in love with Taylor, comes across, in a verbose crossing, with the groom’s best friend. A fifth character joins them, someone different to the others for being someone “happy for being aware that he daily fights for surviving”. Agustín Alezzo brings for the first time a piece of the dramatist Nicky Silver. In pursuit of understanding the difference between love and the need to love and feel loved, the scenes alternate drama peaks with humor. Brothers, life-long friends, new friends, ex lovers, husband, wife… All of them searching for love. It’s a story of great passions about which the author says: “We are all obliged to hold our not corresponded passions, that’s why all my characters perform from a place of extreme need” The Maiden’s Prayer was performed for the first time at the Off-Broadway circuit in 1998 and that same year it was nominated for the “Outer Critics Circle Award”, prize of the critic’s circuit for the media beyond the Broadway circuit. It also performed at many cities of the United States, in London and Canada. At a local scale, it’s the first time that lands in Buenos Aires a play of the author born in the 60s, who now lives in New York and has wrote fifteen plays to date. “Silver’s hallmark is evident: actors that capture the audience getting them into every situation and dialogue with energetic phrases that are triggered in a crossed fire. A thin, sharp and almost insignificant line that he draws between comedy and tragedy. The situations undress the characters in such a radical way, that finally one has the feeling that have met them deeply”, explains Alezzo. Manuel Puig x 2 La creación del escritor argentino revive en dos salas porteñas. Triste golondrina macho en el teatro Regio e Impalpable, en El Extranjero.

“Yo rechacé totalmente la realidad que me tocó vivir. Las comedias, los musicales: esto para mí pasó a ser la realidad. Lo otro, el pueblo, era como un western al que yo había entrado por error, una película de la que no me podía salir. Solamente me sentía cómodo en el refugio de la penumbra del cine”, decía Manuel Puig. Argentino, nacido en General Villegas en 1932, es hoy, a más de 20 años de su muerte, uno de los autores latinoamericanos más leídos y traducidos. Es característico su cuestionamiento a los estereotipos sociales, sexuales e incluso literarios. Bajo un manto de estrellas y El beso de la mujer araña son dos de sus obras teatrales que se vieron en Buenos Aires en distintas ocasiones. En esta temporada, otros dos títulos buscan homenajearlo: una versión de su pieza Triste golondrina macho y un tributo que nos envuelve en el universo del autor llamado Impalpable. Esta última, parte de la base de escritos breves, relatos y entrevistas para centrarse en la acción de tres mujeres que, en un pueblo de la Argentina de los años 50, se refugian en la ficción para huir de una realidad que las agobia. Esa fantasía en la que buscan amparo está, justamente, impregnada de una mirada cinematográfica de manera que el especio escénico toma la forma de un set de filmación. Es el tercer año que Impalpable vuelve a estar en cartel, esta vez en la sala El Extranjero y con música en vivo, compuesta e interpretada en piano por Nicolás Bari y Matías Niebur. La dramaturgia se logró en un trabajo colectivo entre Sergio Calvo, Ignacio de Santis, Catalina Alexander, Elisa Bressán y Malena Schnitzer. Por otro lado, de reciente y postergado estreno en el teatro Regio (del Complejo Teatral Buenos Aires), llegó Triste golondrina macho, una compleja pieza que los letrados han considerado clave para comprender la totalidad de la producción de Puig. Con un trabajo de adaptación y dirección de Guillermo Arengo y Blas Arrese Igor -y porqué no destacar la música de Diego Frenkel- se emprende la difícil tarea de desentrañar esos conocidos conflictos del escritor con su pueblo natal entre otras tantas situaciones que conforman su mundo literario, desde la parodia al melodrama, el cuento mundano o el melodrama irónico. “Divirtiéndonos mucho, intentamos poner en escena esta extraña obra. Por Manuel Puig, por la biblioteca paterna y por nuestra denodada preferencia por los trayectos antes que por los principios y finales”, concluyen los directores. • 20

The creation of the argentine writer revives in two theaters of Buenos Aires. Triste Golondrina Macho at Regio and Impalpable at El Extranjero theater. “I completely rejected the reality that I had to live. Comedies, musicals: for me this was reality. The other, the town, was like a western I had entered by mistake, a film I could`t leave. I only felt comfortable at the shelter of cinema’s shadow” said Manuel Puig. Argentine, born in General Villegas in 1932, today, more than 20 years after his death, one of most read and translated Latin American authors. His questioning to social, sexual and even literary stereotypes is one of his characteristics. Bajo un manto de estrellas and El beso de la mujer araña are two of his theatrical works that were shown in Buenos Aires in different opportunities. At this season, two other titles are seeking to honor him: a version of his piece Triste golondrina macho and a tribute that surrounds us in the author’s universe called Impalpable. This last, is based in light writings, stories and interviews to center in the action of three women that, in an Argentine town of the 50th, take refugee in fiction to escape from the reality that overwhelms them. That fantasy in which they seek shelter is impregnated with a cinematographic view in such a way that the scenic space takes the form of a film set. This is the third year in which Impalpable is at the theater again, this time at El Extranjero theater and with live music, composed and interpreted by Nicolás Bari and Matías Niebur. Drama was achieved by doing a colective work between Sergio Calvo, Ignacio de Santis, Catalina Alexander, Elisa Bressán and Malena Schnitzer. On the other hand, from recent and postponed release at the Regio theater (from the Buenos Aires Theatrical Complex), arrived Triste golondrina macho, a complex piece that the learned have considered crucial for understanding the totality of Puig`s production. With an adaptation and direction work made by Guillermo Arengo and Blas Arrese Igor – and why not highlight Diego Frenkel´s music- it begins the difficult task of figuring out those known conflicts of the writer with its native town among other situations that conform his literary world, from parody of melodrama, the mundane story or the ironic melodrama. “Having a lot of fun, we tried to stage this weird play. In honor of Manuel Puig, the paternal library and our intrepid preference for journeys rather than beginnings and endings” conclude the directors. • 23

Autodenominado militante de la cultura, reconocido actor, director y profesor, se destaca también por su labor social: impulsó leyes a escala nacional, provincial y municipal para incentivar el desarrollo del teatro independiente y la inserción de jóvenes de zonas periféricas. Oscar Alberto Cruz eligió para esta entrevista la confitería, decorada según estilo colonial imperial, de un importante hotel del microcentro. Para entonces, cerca de allí ensayaba su papel de Beethoven en 33 variaciones, de Moisés Kaufman. Café, luego un cortado y de fondo la magia de Ray Charles. La atmósfera del jazz y la elegancia de Lito combinaban a la perfección. Cuando se decide a integrar el elenco de una obra teatral, dice que lo hace porque le gana el personaje. La cualidad de hacerse carne de los personajes que adopta es, justamente, uno de sus rasgos distintivos. Por eso -cuenta- había gente que se cruzaba de vereda al verlo como un transeúnte más en épocas de su protagónico en El elegido, tira de Telefé que le valió el Martín Fierro como mejor actor de reparto en 2011. Ahora Lito Cruz se transforma en el legendario músico en la pieza que acaba de estrenar en el Metropolitan Citi de la avenida Corrientes. La puesta de Helena Tritek también promete la pasión del drama, a partir de un rastreo en la memoria y su paralelo con la música, para transportarnos desde el presente al siglo 19. Sobre escena, la relación de una madre con su hija y el padre de la familia, nada menos que el gran músico, tratando de entenderse con su propio genio. – ¿Por qué elegiste esta obra? Por muchas razones: entre otras, porque a Helena Tritek la conozco hace 50 años y siempre quise trabajar con ella, al igual que con Kompel (productor). La temática y el personaje de la obra también fueron factores que coincidieron con mi situación laboral actual: estoy haciendo cine, trabajo en mi estudio y en la Dirección Provincial de Teatros Independientes de Buenos Aires. Además, los personajes están ahí para desafiarte: desafían tu emoción, tu inteligencia, tu potencia, tu físico, tu espiritualidad. A veces gana uno, a veces el personaje. En general gana el personaje. – ¿Qué te dispara este personaje? La figura y el mundo mítico de un hombre que ha sido uno de los artistas más grandes en la historia de las artes. Me enriquece ingresar a un mundo nuevo. 26

Son muchas las cosas por las que un actor elige, pero el detonante final lo da el personaje: lo que uno quiere explorar de él, su musicalidad, su mundo, su enfermedad, cómo él generaba su música, ese origen del arte que tiene que ver con porqué los artistas son grandes. Un origen que es común a todos los artistas, es una intuición y una cantidad de cosas que vienen de la infancia del hombre. En esa etapa uno jerarquiza cosas que luego la expresión te hace transformar; y así hay uno se convierte en pintor, en poeta, en músico... Las cosas que impulsan el arte son inconscientes: por eso lo más importante es observar al personaje desde la conciencia, conocer su vida, sus impulsos y luego, todo eso que te afecta dejarlo al plano inconsciente. Eso es lo que en definitiva arma nuestras personalidades en el presente. Los personajes son una parte más de las realidades que uno vive. – ¿Qué características le imprimís a tu personaje? Mmm… Lo único es complejo. Es decir: es un ser humano, no me gusta catalogarlo porque todos nosotros somos complejos. Lo que yo trato de hacer en los personajes es darle todos los colores que pueda. Todos tienen cierto humor, cierta ternura, cierta cólera, cierta sensación de soledad…. cosas que en la medida que uno, como actor, los aporte en la expresión entonces el espectador se identificará con uno o dos aspectos del personaje y lo completará a su manera. El espectador completa las obras de arte en todos los casos, en cualquier disciplina. Es el factor fundamental del encuentro del arte con los seres humanos. – ¿Qué es lo más atractivo de la obra? Para mi tarea de actuación, investigar por qué este hombre escribió 33 variaciones de un mismo vals que, según los demás, era de cuarta categoría. Una de las cosas lindas de la obra es que el artista ve algo de la realidad que no ve otra persona. Después lo muestra a través de su obra. Esa complejidad de Beethoven es lo más atractivo de esta pieza. – ¿Cómo ves al teatro hoy en la ciudad de Buenos Aires? El teatro cambia al ritmo que cambia la ciudad y su gente, según la evolución desde el punto de vista cultural y también político. Algo que ha variado, por ejemplo, es que en la calle Corrientes están todos los estilos mezclados. De pronto el espectador quiere ver revista y no pensar en Beethoven. Todas las 30

personas tienen en sí mismas todos los gustos, por eso la variedad. Con el teatro pasa igual que con los libros y con la comida: el ser humano se estudia inconscientemente a sí mismo para ver cuál es el próximo paso que va a dar. Y la respuesta la da el cuerpo cuando le dice qué elegir. ¿Quiero comer ensalada o pescado? ¿Quiero ver a Fátima imitando a Cristina o voy a ver Amadeus? – ¿Notás una expansión del teatro independiente? Sí, nunca murió, siempre está en expansión. Durante el proceso militar trabajaba de manera subterránea y explotó con el legendario Teatro Abierto: el público empezó a darse cuenta cuál era la verdad de lo que estaba pasando en la Argentina. Bombas en el Picadero, amenazas en el Payró. El teatro independiente hoy también lo sigue siendo, por eso la lucha por conseguir recursos independientes.

Militancia Frente a la inevitable pregunta en la que pedimos al artista que explore su trayectoria y diga su evaluación, él asegura “Mi único balance es: confieso que he trabajado. Intenté introducirme en todos los aspectos del teatro, inclusive como funcionario para conseguir leyes para ayudar a la actividad”. Esta determinación suya nos lleva a indagar en su sólida función social, que brotó en él ya desde 1969 cuando fundó el grupo ETEBA junto a Augusto Fernández. Luego de alcanzar el éxito en escenarios de Europa y Estados Unidos y con 20 años de experiencia en la docencia, fue en 1993 cuando ejerció su primer cargo público -director del teatro De la Ribera- desde el cual logró llevar el teatro comunitario al pueblo de La Boca. Dos años más tarde, asumió como Director Nacional de Teatro, en la Secretaría de Cultura de la Nación. Hoy dirige el Consejo de Teatros Independientes de la Provincia de Buenos Aires y coordina el proyecto cultural El teatro en la historia, desarrollado con el Ministerio de Justicia de la Nación en las cárceles federales. “La militancia implica una constancia en la actividad que uno elige independientemente de los resultados. Lo que te hace avanzar son las utopías: hacen que uno vaya, hable, se reúna, trabaje en aquello que le va a servir por años a los habitantes y a los teatros municipales”, define convincente.

– Hablás de recursos que permiten generar espacios culturales de inserción social… El teatro independiente está logrando recursos propios que sirven para colaborar con la actividad social en un momento en que la explosión demográfica es tan grande que la cultura no la puede acompañar. Hay lugares donde la delincuencia gana la calle. Entonces, un pequeño espacio para los jóvenes trae luz y gente y las ratas se van. Así, los chicos que a medida que crecen las poblaciones quedan muy alejados del centro pueden tener un impulso, se prueban como actores, como músicos, como autores… y cuando adquieren confianza comienzan a ir a lugares donde pueden desarrollarse de una manera más completa. Esto es lo que necesita la gente desde la época de las cavernas. En las cárceles, los internos estudian un tema que proponemos, por ejemplo la Vuelta de Obligado, el Éxodo Jujeño, y cuando se presenta la obra ellos también discuten, lo mismo con otro proyecto en el que se ven casos de los llamados bandidos caballeros. Este conocimiento les aumenta muchísimo la autoestima. Y nosotros tendemos a la continuidad, porque es la manera de comprometerse. •

“Characters are there to challenge you” He is Beethoven in the recently premiered 33 variations, theater play he features together with the great Marilú Marini at the Metropolitan Citi. At his 72 years old, Lito Cruz at an exclusive interview with theater map. He calls himself a cultural militant, well-known actor, director and professor, he stands out also for his social work: he promoted laws at a national, provincial and municipal level to encourage the development of independent theater and the insertion of young people from peripheral areas. Oscar Alberto Cruz chose the café, decorated with an imperial colonial style, of an important downtown hotel. At that time, near there he was rehearsing his role of Beethoven at 33 variations, from Moisés Kaufman. Coffee, then a white coffee and the background magic of Ray Charles. The jazz atmosphere and Lito´s elegance perfectly combine. When he decides to be part of the cast of a theater play, he does it because the character wins him. The virtue of incarnating the characters he assumes is, precisely, one of his distinctive characteristics. That’s why- he tellsthere were people who cross the street when they see him as a normal pedestrian while he was featuring at El Elegido, Telefé series for which he won a Martín Fierro award as best supporting actor in 2011. Now Lito Cruz transforms into the legendary musician at the play that has just released at the Metropolitan City in Corrientes Avenue. Helena Tritek`s staging also promises the drama passion, by tracking memory and its parallel with music, to take us from the present time to the 19th century. On stage, the relationship of a mother with her daughter and the father, nothing less than the great musician, trying to understand himself with his own temper. – Why did you choose this play? For many reasons: among others, because I’ve known Helena Tritek for 50 years and I`ve always wanted to work with her, as well as with Kompel (producer). The thematic and the character of the play were also factors that coincide 34

with my current working situation: I’m working on cinema, I work in my studio and at the Buenos Aires Provincial Department of Independent Theaters, characters are there to defy you: they defy your emotion, your intelligence, you power, your body and spirituality. Sometimes you win, sometimes the character. Generally the character wins. – What does this character triggers within you? The figure and the mythical world of a man who has been one of the biggest artists in the history of arts. It enriches me entering a new world. Many are the reasons that make an actor choose, but the final detonator is given by the character: what do you want to explore of him, its musicality, its world, its illness, how he generated his music, that origin of art that has to do with why artists are great. An origin that’s common to every artist, it’s an intuition and a number of things that come from man’s childhood. At that stage one sets up a hierarchy for things that then expression makes you transform; and that’s how one becomes a painter, a poet, a musician... The things that propel art are unconscious: that’s why the most important thing is to observe the character from consciousness, know his life, his boosts and then leave at the unconscious level everything that affects you. That’s what in the end builds our personalities at present. Characters are a part of the realities that you live. – What are the characteristics that you stamp on your character? Mmm… The unique is complex. That is to say: he is a human being, I don’t like categorizing him because all of us are complex. What I try to do with my characters is give them all the colors that I can. All of them have certain mood, tenderness, anger, feeling of loneliness… things that as far as one, as actor, offer in the expression then the spectator will feel identified with one or two aspects of the character and will complete it in their own way. The spectator completes the works of art in every case, in any discipline. It’s the essential factor of the encounter of art with human beings. – What’s the most attractive thing of the play? For me the task of acting, investigate why this man wrote 33 variations of the same waltz that, according to the others, was of a fourth category. One of the beautiful things of the play is that the artist sees something of reality that others don’t. Then he shows it through his play. That complexity Beethoven has is the most attractive thing of this play. 37

– How do you see theater in Buenos Aires city nowadays? Theater changes at the same speed the city and its people change, according to evolution from the cultural and political point of view. Something that has changed is that, for example, in Corrientes Street all the styles are mixed. Suddenly the spectator wants to see revue and not think about Beethoven. All the people have within themselves all sort of tastes, so the variety. With theater happens the same as with books and food: the human being studies himself unconsciously to see what’s the next step he will take. And the body gives the answer when it tells him what to choose. Do I want to eat a salad or fish? Do I want to see Fátima mimicking Cristina or do I want to see Amadeus? – Do you notice an expansion of independent theater? Yes, it never died, it’s always expanding. During the military process it worked in a subterranean way and exploded with the legendary Open Theater: the audience started realizing the truth of what was happening in Argentina. Bombs at the Picadero, threats at the Payró. The independent theater remains being independent, that’s why it fights for obtaining independent resources. Militant activity To the inevitable question in which we ask the artist to explore his career and evaluate it, he affirms “My only balance is: I confess I’ve worked. I tried to introduce myself in all the aspects of theater, even as civil servant to obtain laws to help this activity”. This determination of him makes us question about his solid social function that appeared in him since 1969 when he founded the ETEBA group together with Augusto Fernández. After achieving success in stages in Europe and the United States and having 20 years of experience in teaching, it was in 1933 when he first performed a public office - director of De la Ribera Theater – from which he was able to take the community theater to La Boca town. Two years later he assumed as National Theater Director, at the Argentine Secretariat of Cultural. Today he directs the Buenos Aires Board of Independent Theaters and coordinates the cultural project El Teatro en la historia (The theater in history), developed with the National Ministry of Justice at the federal jails. “The militant activity involves a perseverance in the activity that one chooses regardless of the re38

sults. What makes you progress are utopias: make one go, meet, work on what will be useful during years for the inhabitants of municipal theaters” he said convincingly. – You speak about resources that help generate cultural spaces of social insertion… Independent theater is getting its own resources that serve to collaborate with social activity in a moment when demographic explosion is so big that culture cannot accompany it. There are places where delinquency takes the streets. So, a small place for the youth brings light and people and the rats go away. This way, the kids that as cities grow remain far away from downtown, can have a boost, they test themselves as actors, musicians, authors… and when they feel with confidence they start going to places where they can develop in a more complete way. This is what people need since the caverns age. At prison, the inmates study a subject we propose, for example the naval Battle of Vuelta de Obligado, the Jujuy Exodus, and when the play is presented they also discuss, the same happens in other projects where cases of the so called street bandits are analyzed. This knowledge increases a lot their self-esteem. And we tend to continuation, because that’s the way of compromising. •
