Hei Whakakitenga The Declaration of Indigenous Cinema We the Indigenous screen storytellers United in this northern corner of our mother, the earth In a great assembly of wisdom we declare to all nations:

We glory in our past: • when our earth was nurturing our oral traditions • when night sky evoked visions animated in our dreams • when the sun and the moon became our parents in stories told • when storytelling made us all brothers and sisters • when our stories fostered great chiefs and leaders • when justice was encouraged through the stories told

We will: • hold and manage Indigenous cultural and intellectual property • be recognised as the primary guardians and interpreters of our culture • respect Indigenous individuals and communities • nourish knowledge from our traditions to modern screen appearance • use our skills to communicate with nature and all living things • through screen storytelling heal our wounds • through modern screen expression carry our stories to those not yet born And thus through motion picture, we will make the invisible visible again.

We vow to manage our own destiny and recover our complete humanity in pride in being Indigenous screen storytellers.

Ngā Pou o te Whare Kōrero The Foundation Posts of Māoriland Hou mai koe ki roto i te whare kōrero o Māoriland. Ko tōna tāhuhu ko te iwi, ko te poutāhu ko te mana o te kupu, ko te poutuarongo ko te ira tangata. Kei waenga ko te poutokomanawa o te aroha noa. Ka mutu, ko ngā pou koko ka titi iho ki te whenua ko ēnei: We bid you entry into our house of stories. The ridgepole is the people, the front post is the authority of the word, the rear post is the essence of our humanity. Between them, we find the support pillar of love. The posts that anchor the corners to the land are these:

KOAKOA - CELEBRATION Māoriland celebrates the rise of Indigenous cinema. It invites filmmakers from around the world to share their compelling big‑screen stories with us, and with each other.

OHOOHO - INSPIRATION Māoriland upholds the mana and inspiration of our storytellers. We are guided by our elders, and taught by our children. The festival assists our community to expand their perspectives and connect with those from other cultures.

MANAAKI - RESPECT Māoriland is rooted in the traditions and language of the hapū and iwi of Ōtaki. It is our honour to extend manaakitanga to the many visitors to the festival.

KŌTAHITANGA - INCLUSION Māoriland provides a portal to the Indigenous world for ALL people. It assists social cohesion, a sense of pride, and the informed well-being of our community.

He Kupu Whakataki From The Festival Director E ngā tai e whā o te ao taketake, he kura i tangihia he maimai aroha ki o tātou mate huhua. No reira, koutou mā, te iti, te rahi, te whakamataku, takoto mārie ki te pō. Moe mai, okioki mai rā.

Ki te hunga ora, kua wātea atu ngā pōkēkēao i runga i ngā maunga, kua whiti iho te rā ki ngā raorao nei. Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa.

No matter where we live, all of us continue to experience the disruptions caused by the Covid 19 pandemic. Lockdowns, border closures, outbreaks and isolation have become an unfortunate way of life. The effects of Covid on Indigenous communities worldwide have, once again, highlighted dire inequities in health and resources for living. Many tāngata whenua nations including our own have rallied to protect our communities. We have looked to our artists and storytellers to help us through the worst of these difficult times.

This MFF2022 programme is packed with films that have been made despite these ever changing and ever challenging circumstances. We present 106 films as proof of our resilience and the ability of human beings to find light in the darkest of times. Although a few of these stories are set in dystopian futures there is more humour than anger, more inspiration, more music. Lots of reasons to go see everything!

The theme for Māoriland 2022 is He Pitomata He Pito Ora: Potential and Wellbeing.

We chose this theme to celebrate all of the filmmakers and artists who help us make sense of our precarious world. Their work encourages all of us and our communities to find strength in each other.

Here at Māoriland we are committed to realising the potential in rangatahi.

As leaders, filmmakers, animators and technicians. The results of their talent and hard work is celebrated in this MFF2022 programme.

E kīa ana te kōrero, ko ngā pūmanawa e nohopuku ana i roto i te tangata, ina poipoia ka puāwai. If nurtured, the talents that lie latent within a person will flourish. Koia tonu ko te Pitomata.

Pito Ora - a tangible sense of wellbeing - is a big part of what we know the MFF2022 will provide for the benefit

of our audiences, our filmmaking whānau, and our town of Ōtaki.

We are also excited to bring MFF2022 to you during the period of te Tau Hou Māori - the Māori New Year, marked by the rising of the Matariki constellation. With the recent opening of Aotearoa’s borders we are thrilled to extend manaakitanga to the international filmmakers who can now present their films in person. It’s been two long years. Nau mai koutou!

He Huatau Māoriland Charitable Trust The Māoriland Charitable Trust is committed to creating social, cultural and economic opportunities for our community of Ōtaki and for filmmakers and artists.

The success of the Māoriland Film Festival has enabled the MCT to continue to grow its activities.

At the MĀORILAND HUB, we celebrate Indigenous excellence in film and across all forms of artistic expression.

In 2022 we will welcome our first Indigenous filmmaker to the newly refurbished MĀORILAND FILMMAKERS RESIDENCE - a first for Aotearoa. They will work alongside MĀORILAND PRODUCTIONS to develop and produce Indigenous stories for the screen.

Māoriland Productions works with filmmaker talent nurtured

by TE URU MAIRE - the Māoriland Rangatahi Strategy.

Te Uru Maire is in turn led by NGĀ PAKIAKA, the rangatahi film leadership group.

Capacity building, exhibition, and commissioning new works, Māoriland is evolving its ecosystem to connect filmmakers with film audiences and with industry.

This kaupapa Māori ecosystem is PURITIA, to be launched in 2023.

The creative opportunities offered at the Māoriland Hub to rangatahi include digital creative arts such as animation at M.A.T.C.H as well as dance, drama and art classes, TE ARA TOI.

HE PAKI TAKETAKE is sharing the voice of our people by reversioning films into Te Reo Māori with the first feature film TAMA KAIĀTEA (Astro Kid) at MFF2022.

TOI MATARAU - Māoriland’s contemporary Māori art gallery celebrates the incredible visual artists we have in our community and across Aotearoa. In 2022 the collective of renowned Māori carvers Te Matatoki have taken up their Māoriland Residence to carve the pou of Māoriland.

All this work is supported by the Māoriland MAARA and MĀORILAND KAI COLLECTIVE who are working to transform and support our community through food sovereignty and para kore practices (waste minimisation).

MFF2022 takes place as part of MATARIKI RAMAROA - Kāpiti Lights Arts Festival. This new event from the Māoriland team aims to connect our wider community across the Kāpiti Coast to te tau hou Māori - the Māori New Year.

The MCT is an independent Māori entity with a board of trustees, the founding Māoriland whānau and a mandate from Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki, the five sub-tribes of Ōtaki.

It is a home for the Indigenous, a home for the arts, a home for ideas and conversations – he whare taketake, he whare tapere, he whare kōrero.

Open year-round in Ōtaki Village, the Māoriland Hub showcases Indigenous creativity and innovation through film, visual, music and performing arts, technology, kōrero and more.

At the Māoriland Hub you will find the Toi Matarau Art Gallery, M.A.T.C.H the Māoriland Tech Creative Hub, Māoriland Productions and the Māoriland Filmmaker Residency.

Kaitūao and Kaihāpai Our support team At Māoriland we extend manaakitanga to our audiences, artists and filmmakers. We aim to do our very best to ensure you have a good stay with us here in Ōtaki.

Those who volunteer their time to help make the MFF run smoothly are the KAITŪAO who wear red t-shirts and big smiles. Their efforts to run the venues and ticket sales are as valuable as what they do to look after our guests.

Our KAIHĀPAI also wear red t-shirts. They are rangatahi from the schools in our community. They are responsible for looking after audiences in all our venues.

Hauora Hauora, the well-being of our audiences and artists is important at Māoriland. We understand that films can affect people in different ways. Having a kōrero after a film is great therapy. If you do need more support let the kaimahi at the Māoriland Hub know and they will do what they can to help.

Rongoā Māori Te Waka Rākau is a rongoā clinic and dispensary located within the Māoriland Hub. Joanne Hakaraia uses traditional plant remedies to bridge modern-day needs and imbalances.

We respect our Kaitūao and our Kaihāpai. They represent our community with pride and work for your benefit. Feel free to ask them anything about Ōtaki or Māoriland.

Matariki Ramaroa Kāpiti Light Arts Festival MFF2022 is part of Matariki Ramaroa - Kāpiti Lights Arts Festival.

Matariki Ramaroa is a month-long celebration of creativity to start the Māori New Year. Bookended by two free beach-side light sculpture festivals, Matariki Ramaroa includes live music, theatre, art, talks, workshops, community events and Indigenous film. Matariki Ramaroa is presented

by Māoriland Charitable Trust, the team behind Māoriland Film Festival.

The values and functions of MŌoriland are derived from cornerstone principles of celebration, unity, being alert, and respecting the mana of every person and taonga in our whare.

We ask that manuwhiri and visitors alike respect the mana of all those you encounter.

All kaimahi interacting with the public at ticket counters and at venues will be vaccinated and will be wearing masks. We will be testing regularly. This is our duty of care to ensure that the vulnerable in our audience feel safe.

Tīkiti Tākoha If you love Māoriland Film Festival, Tīkiti tākoha is a way to enjoy everything while offering tangible support to Māoriland.

Tīkiti tākoha are priced from $175 - $375 and gives free access to all public screenings while including a charitable donation to the Māoriland Charitable Trust. All charitable donations are tax-deductible in NZ.

Ticket Refunds Tickets to the MFF are priced as low as possible to ensure the festival is accessible to the community. The cost of your ticket is only a small contribution to the work done by the Māoriland team and the filmmakers to bring the MFF to life.

• You need a physical ticket to enter any event. These can be claimed by showing your Industry Pass at The Māoriland Hub, 68 Main St Ōtaki.

• We recommend you select your tickets before the festival.

Information on how to do this will be provided to pass holders via email.

If you choose not to use a ticket, please return it to the Ticket Office so someone else can enjoy the film.

• Your pass does not guarantee you a ticket if sessions are sold out.

• Industry passes are not transferable.

• Lost passes cannot be reprinted.

• Red Carpet Party. Due to limited numbers, you must RSVP to attend this party by Friday 1 July 6 pm at the latest, to ensure your ticket.

Te Huarahi Mai Travel Information Māoriland is located in Ōtaki on the Kāpiti Coast, 80 km from Wellington Airport.

Ride the free Māoriland pahi to MFF2022 Wellington UNESCO City of Film is pleased to support our region’s film cultural events by providing free, accessible and sustainable transport to Māorliand Film Festival 2022.

Your ticket purchase includes free return train travel on the Kāpiti line to Waikanae station plus a free shuttle onto Ōtaki and the Māoriland Hub (on date of screening only).

ŌTAKI

Public transport The train from Wellington to Ōtaki is a one-hour trip that offers stunning views along the Kāpiti Coast. Sit on the left-hand side of the train heading north for the best views out to Kāpiti Island.

The Capital Connection runs Mon-Friday departing Wellington to Ōtaki daily at 5.15 pm. Stay overnight and return to Wellington at 7.13 am.

The Kāpiti Line runs every half hour to and from Wellington. The service arrives and departs from Waikanae, 15 minutes south of Ōtaki.

There are also buses along the train route. Connecting from Waikanae, the 290 bus will bring you to Ōtaki.

The bus leaves Waikanae for Ōtaki’s Main St five times daily. This bus returns to Waikanae.

Intercity buses provide transport from Palmerston North and Wellington.

Toi Matarau Mana Motuhake, he whakaingoingo mai i ngā mahara o muri nei.

Romancing the past with memories of mana motuhake as it used to be, made into reality.

Te Ara Hou June 29 - August 29, Toi Matarau Gallery This Toi Matarau exhibition celebrates traditional, contemporary and future Indigenous knowledge. Descendants of Ngāti Raukawa, Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Iwi from around the motu respond to the continuing pandemic inspired by mana motuhake and the night skies.

Whakairo Māoriland welcomes 2022 artists in residence, master carvers Te Matatoki. Led by international renowned master carvers Fayne Robinson (Kai Tahu, Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō, Ngāti Porou), Lewis Gardiner (Te Arawa, Kai Tahu, Te Whānau a Apanui) and Ian Wayne Grant. (Ngāti Kahungunu, Rangitane, Ngāti Kahu, Te Rarawa). Te Matatoki is carving Ngā Pou o te Whare o Māoriland - four large pou made from a 200-year-old tōtara tree found in the Ōtaki river in 2020. This residency is supported by Toi Ake, Creative New Zealand.

Raranga Ngā Aho Whenua (Māoriland Artists in Residence 2021) showcase new works by Toi Iho™ weaver Sonia Snowden (Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Whātua) and Pip Devonshire (Ngāti Raukawa). Follow the fragrant trail of freshly harvested harakeke, muka and other natural fibres to see live demonstrations with local weavers.

Huatea June 24 - August 7, Toi Matarau Gallery Tairāwhiti’s School of Māori Visual Art & Design, Toihoukura returns to Māoriland for its bi-annual exhibition curated by leading artist and Toihoukura tutor Erena Koopu, Te Makarini Solomon, Ayson Lewis and Toihoukura students.

Put Some Respect On My Name An installation film by Jeremiah Tauamiti (Falelatai, Solosolo, Faleasi'u, Pu'apu'a).

“This is for anyone who’s been embarrassed during class role calls, for those who were ashamed because it was a tongue twister.

It’s for you broadcasters, the ignorant, the ‘normal’, the can’t be bothered – Put Some Respect On My Name.”

He Paki Taketake presents TAMA KAIĀTEA He Paki Taketake draws from the storytelling strengths of our community, and their active participation in the revitalisation of te reo Māori, to enable the production of high-quality te reo Māori content for rangatahi and their whānau. Based at the Māoriland Hub in Ōtaki, He Paki Taketake has reversioned French animated feature film, ASTRO KID into te reo Māori.

La Raíz Es Mas Importante Que La Flor (the root is more important than the flower) Director: Cristina Kotz Cornejo Nation: Huarpe

AlterNative Director: Pohaikealoha Panoke Nation: Kanaka Maoli AlterNative is the world's first Kanaka Maoli visual novel game! Rooted in Indigenous futurism, AlterNative calls upon the historical voyages our ancestors made to bond with our island homes and superimposes the past onto a future setting in the vast depths of space.

This visual novel is intended to teach the world about building a relationship with the land and being one with the world as all of nature are our living ancestors. AlterNative's introduction chapter serves as the game demo and first step into a future determined by the player's heart and actions.

US based filmmaker and Huarpe descendent, Cristina Kotz Cornejo is introduced to Huarpe leader, Maria Zalazar who introduces Cristina to the culture and plight of modern day Huarpe descendents in what is now known as San Juan, Argentina in this short 360º personal documentary.
