Two nights of glowing light artworks to wander through, nourishing food to warm you up and vibrant new musical performances to kick off the celebrations of the rising of the star cluster, Matariki!

Light artists include; Angus Muir, Erena Koopu, Delaney Davidson, Johnny Moetara, Robot Wolf and more! Hear exotic instruments from all around the rohe and more! Taste local fare! It’s free and for the whole family. so come and join us at MacLean Park, Paraparaumu beach for this special opening of our Matariki festival.

Matariki Lighting the Beacons Bonfire Gather at 6:30 pm on Friday 2 July for the lighting of our beachside bonfire with help from Paraparaumu Volunteer Fire Brigade. The fire will be supervised all night to keep you toasty and warm.

Matariki Remembrance Garden: SATURDAY JULY 3, 9 - 10 AM Bring along a candle or an offering to leave and a chance to speak about someone special to you who has recently passed.

Matariki Kids Bike Light Parade: A CHANCE FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES TO PARTICIPATE IN FESTIVITIES. Jazz up your bike with lights and dress to impress for a gentle ride along the colourfully lit beach path.

Parents and caregivers join your little one in a bike ride they’ll never forget.

Start at the beach-side grassy area between Ocean & Toru Roads at 6pm (gather from 5:30pm) for a gentle ride along the specially lit, guided beach path and back again. Saturday July 3, starting at 6 pm.

Music Saturday: Romani-jazz inspired trio BLACK SPIDER STOMP perform live Saturday July 3 at 5 pm.

During the UV Skate bowl demo enjoy house producer DJ LIL STIFFY, Saturday July 3, 6:30 pm.

In a very rare and special performance alt country voodoo preacher DELANEY DAVIDSON will perform live alongside his enigmatic artwork built specifically for Matariki Lighting the Beacons festival, Saturday July 3, 7 pm.

MATARIKI, LIGHTING THE BEACONS is a month-long multi-disciplinary arts festival across the Kāpiti Region July 2 – 24, 2021.

Bookended by two public light sculpture events at the beginning and end of July, Lighting the Beacons includes music, arts and theatre as well as multiple community events for Kāpiti whānau to enjoy.

Matariki is the Māori tradition that marks the rising of the star cluster also known as the Pleiades. Matariki signals the beginning of the Māori new year and is a time for commemorating the passing of loved ones as well as making plans for the coming year. It is also a time for celebration!

Nau Mai, Piki Mai, Haere Mai Rā Matariki Lighting the Beacons is presented by Māoriland Charitable Trust with support from Kāpiti Coast District Council and Creative NZ.

Tiaho Mai showcases authentic traditional and contemporary Māori artworks featuring renowned Toi Iho™ artists, Ngā Aho Whenua Residency Weavers – Pip Devonshire and Sonia Snowden, artists of Te Āti Awa, Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Toa Rangatira as well as invited leading and emerging artists.

Tiaho Mai is the sixth exhibition inside Kiwibank Paraparaumu as part of Creative Kāpiti Art for Everyone programme, partly funded by Kāpiti Creative Communities Scheme.

Facilitated by award winning rangatahi filmmakers, the films from the ETW workshop will premiere at Māoriland Film Festival in March 2022! Participants could win up to $1000 in cash and prizes.
