I Encuentro Nacional de Jóvenes Escultores: un encuentro de diferentes regiones de nuestra rica y variada composición social y cultural.

Cuando se gesta un proyecto de arte se asume una enorme responsabilidad y al mismo tiempo es una tensa espera en la duda de si se llevará a cabo o no. En ese momento es cuando más se necesita que alguien crea en el proyecto y lo apoye.

Por esta razón quiero agradecer a las instituciones que hicieron posible el financiamiento de este I Encuentro Nacional de Jóvenes Escultores, para que se haga realidad aquello que al principio era un sueño. ¿Porque es importante un encuentro de artistas? Sobre todo cuando se es joven en el oficio, necesariamente debe uno confrontar la obra con el público y con el colega, que tiene el mismo objetivo.

Trabajar en el mismo espacio con las mismas ventajas, es una prueba de fuego y esta experiencia ha sido sin duda una enorme escuela de aprendizaje para los noveles escultores.

15 escultores de diferentes localidades del país llegaron al Paseo de las Esculturas para hacer de este espacio un gran taller abierto al público; vinieron del altiplano, valles y llanos, con idiomas diferentes en el crisol del arte, y cual alquimistas fueron construyendo esta experiencia de amistad, arte y cultura. Fueron siete días de trabajo, intercambio, culturas y técnica.

Troncas rescatadas vencidas por el viento o el crecimiento vertiginoso de la urbe cruceña, se fueron convirtiendo en esculturas de las manos de 15 artistas de la ciudad de La Paz, Chuquisaca, Moxos (Beni), Potosí, Santa Cruz, y de provincias, con la perticipación de Chiquitanos, Ayoreos y Weenhayek del Chaco Tarijeño. Aserrín, astillas y mucha adrenalina marcaron esta experiencia de fraternidad, entorno a la pasión por la escultura.

Como fruto de este sueño, 15 esculturas de algarrobo (cupesi) donadas a la ciudad y emplazadas en 4 bibliotecas de barrio, forman ahora parte del patrimonio escultórico cruceño.

I National Young Sculptors` Symposium: an encounter of different regions of our rich and varied social and cultural composition.

When an art project is gestated, one assumes an enormous responsibility in an anxious wait, doubting if it will come true or not. In this tense wait, one needs somebody to believe in the project.

The idea is conceived, and then comes the fruit of the conception. For the fruit, it is necessary that somebody believes and supports the project. For this reason I would like to thank the institutions that made this encounter possible, so the dream in the beginning became a reality.

Why is it important to have artistic encounter?

In this craft, when one is young, one must confront his work against the public or colleagues, who have the same anxiety. Working in the same space with the same advantages, it is a litmus test. This experience has been, without doubt, an enormous school of knowledge for the newest sculptors.

15 sculptors from Bolivia arrived at Sculptor Lane in Santa Cruz to make this place a great workshop open to the public: from the Bolivian highlands, valleys, and plains, in different languages, in an art melting pot, like magic, this experience was built from friendship, art and culture. Seven days of hard work, exchange, culture, and technique.

Trunks fallen due to the wind or because of the vertiginous growth of Santa Cruz, are converted into sculptures by the hands of 15 artists from La Paz, Potosi, Chuquisaca, Santa Cruz, Beni and Chiquitano, Ayoreo, and Weenhayek (Chaco,Tarija) natives.

15 carob sculptures donated to the city, placed in 4 neighborhood libraries, now form part of the sculpture patrimony of Santa Cruz and are the reflection of art and culture of our city.

En los últimos años, una de las áreas de las artes visuales menos difundida y promovida ha sido la de la escultura. Creemos que organizar un encuentro que permita el intercambio y fortalezca el aprendizaje entre jóvenes escultores nacionales es de vital importancia para que esta forma de arte no se pierda. Es así que nace el I Encuentro Nacional de Jóvenes Escultores, que no es un concurso o competencia, sino un espacio de intercambio, aprendizaje y formación de jóvenes escultores de diferentes partes de Bolivia.

El I Encuentro Nacional de Jóvenes Escultores se realizó con mucho éxito la semana del 2 al 8 de junio de 2013, en el Paseo de las Esculturas ubicado en el canal Isuto y 3er anillo de la ciudad de Santa Cruz. El lugar donde se desarrolló el Encuentro es un espacio público, donde se acercó el arte y el proceso de creación artística al ciudadano, democratizando así el acceso al arte y la cultura y promoviendo un espacio de uso común para los habitantes de la ciudad.

Los escultores invitados al I Encuentro Nacional de Jóvenes Escultores fueron escultores que están

emergiendo como nuevos artistas en el ámbito nacional. Son graduados de las carreras de arte de las ciudades de La Paz y Santa Cruz y también autodidactas que tienen como pasión la escultura y han ganado premios. Muchos de ellos fueron ayudantes de los maestros invitados a los Encuentros Internacionales de Escultores organizados por Manzana 1 Espacio de Arte en los años 2006, 2008, 2010 y 2012, así como también participaron en los diferentes talleres de formación realizados por Manzana 1 Espacio de Arte y Búho Blanco- Taller de Escultura.

Las troncas se repartieron a través de un sorteo el primer día del encuentro; a partir de este momento comenzó el proceso creativo de cada escultor. La especie de madera fue algarrobo o cupesí.

Las 15 esculturas creadas durante la semana que duró el Encuentro fueron donadas a la ciudad para ser el atractivo en cuatro bibliotecas de barrios San Luis, Hamacas, Av. Alemana y Pampa de la Isla donde ahora se encuentran instaladas.

Over the last years, one of the least distributed and promoted visual art areas has been the area of sculpture. We believe that organizing an encounter, which permits exchange and strengthens learning among young sculptors, is of vital importance to prevent this area from disappearing. This is why the I National Young Sculptors` Symposium is not a contest or competition, but a space for exchange, learning and formation for young sculptors from different cities of Bolivia.

The I National Young Sculptors´ Symposium has been successfully realized from June 2nd through June 8th, 2013, on the Sculpture Lane, located on the Isuto Canal, 3er anillo, in the city of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. The place where this encounter was developed, is a public space where art and the artistic creation process has been approached to the citizens, democratizing the access to art and culture and promoting a free public space.

Sculptors invited to the I National Young Sculptors` Symposium, are emerging artists in the

national territory. They are art graduates and selftaught artists who have won prizes from the cities of La Paz, Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca, Potosí. Natives Ayoreo (Santa Cruz) and Weenhayek (Tarija) as well as artisans from Chiquitania (Santa Cruz) and Villamontes (Tarija) were also invited. Many of them were the maters´ assistants in the International Sculptors´ Symposiums organized by “Manzana 1 Espacio de Arte” in 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2012, as well as participants of the diverse formation workshops, carried out by “Manzana 1 Espacio de Arte” and “Búho Blanco” sculpture studio.

The trunks were distributed over a raffle on the first day of the encounter and from this moment on, the creative process of each sculptor began. The wood specie was Carob, known as Cupesí.

Once the encounter was over, 15 sculptures, result of the encounter, were donated to the city to become neighborhood’s libraries appeal. They were moved to 4 libraries: San Luis, Hamacas, Alemana Avenue, and Pampa de la Isla.

Estoy haciendo una figura que surge del tronco, como si liberara a un espíritu ya caído. Tenemos esa teoría de que el espíritu abandona el cuerpo, en este caso está en ese proceso; es como una metamorfosis del tronco hacia el ser que va a volar. El ser tiene una forma femenina y tiene un ala que se extiende y vuela, en una transición al dejar su cuerpo.

De cierta forma, estoy dándole vida a algo que ya está muerto.

Estoy haciendo una representación de la figura femenina un poco estilizada, empleando lo que es el movimiento, el ritmo y la línea bien fluida, que quita lo estático, lo rígido, a una pieza. También me gusta trabajar con los espacios vacíos, porque dan sombra y un contraste fuerte.

En mi caso ya no opto por hacer piezas voluminosas sino piezas con bastante línea, vacías. Pienso que la escultura ya no debe ser como un objeto que tiene que ocupar un espacio sino algo que recorra el espacio. Por eso empleo bastante la línea conductora; uno mira de abajo y esa línea te dirige hacia arriba o a un lado y te hace girar, y girar es un lindo recurso plástico.

Estoy esculpiendo tres pingüinos de diferentes tamaños. Me gustan los animales y escogí este tema aunque estaba un poco indeciso, ya que dependía del tronco que me tocara. Con suerte me tocó el tronco casi como lo estaba pensando, así que lo trabajé con motosierra más que todo, un poco de gubia y colorcito quemando la obra y barnizando.

Primera vez que hago algo grande y primera vez que participo como escultor invitado; en otros encuentros anteriores participé como ayudante.

Generalmente me inspiro en la naturaleza, me gusta trabajar mucho los animales. Últimamente estoy trabajando la sensación de los planos, no tanto las formas curvas.

En este caso, me inspiré en una lagartija. Fue sin querer. Cuando estuve descortezando el tronco, en el momento que lo hice girar, cayó una lagartija; yo no la vi, quedó aplastada y yo me siento en deuda. A Santa Cruz le quité una lagartija, por eso devuelvo otra.

I am making a figure that arises from the trunk. I see it as a spirit; it’s like freeing a fallen spirit. We have a theory in which the spirit leaves the body. In this case, this is the process. It’s like the trunk’s metamorphosis towards a being, which will fly. The being has a female form and an extended wing in flight, the transition of leaving the body. It only has one wing in mutation. In a certain way, I am giving life to what is already dead.

I am making a stylized representation of the female form. I’m using movement and fluid linear rhythm, which removes the rigidness and therefore is not motionless.

I also like empty spaces because they provide shades and strong contrasts. In my case, with sculpture, I stopped opting for voluminous pieces; instead I now make very linear, empty pieces. I believe that the sculpture should not be an object that takes space, but something that travels through space. This is what I think sculpting should be, that is why I often use a conductor line. One looks from the bottom and this line will guide you to the top or sideways, and it makes you spin and spin. It is a beautiful plastic resource.

I am carving three penguins of different sizes. Mostly I like animals and I chose this theme even though I was undecided because it depended on the trunk I was given. Luckily I was given a trunk similar to the one I had in mind and the piece was made using mostly a chainsaw, some gouge and color by burning it and then varnishing it. This is the first time I make something big, and also the first time I participate as a guest sculptor. In other encounters, I have only participated as an assistant.

Generally, I get inspired by nature. I enjoy working with animals. Lately I have been working with the feeling of smooth plains, not so much curve forms. In this case, a lizard inspired me. Accidentally, while I was debarking the trunk and I turned it around, a lizard fell, and it got crushed. It was unintentional. I feel indebted to Santa Cruz, I took away one of its lizards and that is why I’m returning another.

Pensé al inicio hacer algo figurativo, pero conforme fui trabajando el tronco me introduje en lo abstracto, jugando con sus mismas formas e insinuándolas para que tuvieran más fuerza los movimientos que ya tenía, así como creando otros movimientos.

Me gusta componer para que se aprecie bien la escultura desde todos los ángulos.

Normalmente yo no hago abstracto y en este Encuentro terminé desprendiéndome de lo figurativo.

Edgar Marquez In the beginning, I thought of making something representational. As I continued to work, I introduced myself towards the abstract, playing with the trunk’s forms, strengthening the movements it already had, and creating new ones. In fact, the wood already had beautiful movement.

I like to compose something that will be well appreciated in all of its angles.

Normally, I don’t do abstract, and in this encounter I found myself detaching from the representational.

Estoy siendo como un obrero para la escultura que va a salir de acá. Yo soy el obrero y el árbol me está diciendo qué quiere ser; estoy siguiendo esos instintos que tiene la madera con el escultor. Estoy improvisando, sacándole el corazón al árbol para que tenga su propio cuerpo.

Para no echar a perder mucha madera estoy aprovechando a lo máximo el tronco, para no desechar.

Siempre que uno va haciendo una escultura va cambiando la idea que tenía en un principio; a veces te encuentras con una rajadura, como en mi caso ahora, y tienes que improvisar ese momento para ver qué solución le podés dar.

Mi escultura se llama El Guardián, ya que las esculturas van a estar como un guardián en la biblioteca que les toque.

Quiero hacer una fusión de algo abstracto y figurativo, utilizar la misma forma de onda del tronco porque tiene mucho movimiento, y seguirlo. Deseo hacer el rostro de una mujer y sugerir sus pechos.

Voy a aprovechar los colores y tonos del mismo tronco. Hago más uso de amoladora y gubias.

Decidí hacer algo que me gustara y no me resultara tedioso. Por eso elegí seguir una onda abstracta, jugando con los planos que se cruzan y se desplazan y se unen entre sí. Al mismo tiempo, estos planos forman una especie de volumen sugerido.

Trato de jugar con la forma que ya viene predeterminada, con los contrastes de textura. Me gusta que el movimiento sea fluido. Lo bello de la escultura es la sensualidad del movimiento.

Para mi hacer una escultura es sacar algo que tengo en la cabeza o sacar lo que el tronco tiene dentro; es como un diálogo entre la materia y el trabajo. Desnudas la madera de la corteza y ella te va a pedir por dónde quiere ser cortada.

I am the sculpture’s worker, I am the worker and the tree tells me what it wants to be.

I am following the instincts that sculptors have with wood. I am improvising while retrieving the tree’s heart so that it has its own body. I am taking as much advantage of the trunk as possible, as to not waste any wood. When carving a sculpture, 70% of the time, it changes from the initial idea.

Sometimes you find yourself with a crack, like in my case now, and while healing it, one has to find a solution while improvising in the moment, this is what I am doing. As the sculpture will be taken to a library as a watchman, it is called The guardian.

I want to make a fusion: from the representational to the abstract, using the shape of the trunk as it has a lot of movements, and follow it. My intention is to make the face of a woman and follow down to her breasts. I will take advantage of the trunk’s colors and tones. The tools I mostly use are the grinder and gouges.

I decided to make something which doesn’t come off as tedious and is something I like. That is why I chose to take an abstract route and play with the different planes that intersect, separate and join back together. At the same time, these planes form a type of suggested volume. I try to play along with the trunk’s predetermined form and the contrasts of its texture. I like that the movement is fluid.

The beauty of a sculpture is the sensuality of its movement. For me, making a sculpture is bringing out something inside my head or bringing something that the trunk carries inside. It is like a dialogue between material and work, and exploiting this to the fullest. When debarking a trunk towards its nakedness, it will tell you where it wants to be cut.

Un reto de este Encuentro es adaptarse a la pieza que te toca, a la madera, si es blanda o dura. En esta pieza lo interesante es la parte natural que tiene, la parte orgánica, y cómo ensamblo eso a lo que yo hago: geométrico, con líneas simples.

Así decidí hacer una metamorfosis: este árbol se está convirtiendo en cubos o los cubos en árbol. Trato también de jugar con todo el espacio, es por eso que quiero salir de la pieza y tener otras fuera y complementar con el dibujo.

Como trabajo desde hace varios años en artesanía, normalmente hago cosas pequeñas, es la primera vez que hago un trabajo grande. Mi trabajo se ha inspirado observando la naturaleza y la riqueza que tiene mi región. En Villamontes hay muchas aves y peces, hay muchas especies que se están extinguiendo. El sábalo es lo más conocido y tradicional en Villamontes.

Según una historia que cuenta mi mamá y todos conocen, un ayoreo encontró a un joven que no era un ser humano normal sino que era como un dios. El hombre lo invitó a la comunidad y siempre iba con él a cazar, a recolectar miel y cuando le faltaba agua, el joven exprimía su cabello y de ahí salía agua.

El joven decidió quedarse en la comunidad. Un día el ayoreo salió dejando al joven solo, pero se olvidó de avisar a la comunidad para que no lo molestaran, que no jugaran con él y que no lo tocaran, porque ya las personas de la comunidad lo observaban como raro. Los niños y otros jóvenes jugaron con él hasta que el joven se enojó, levantó su brazo y salieron relámpagos, cayó una tremenda lluvia, echó a las personas al agua y se convirtieron en ranas.

Es bueno contar esta historia en época de sequía cuando falta la lluvia.

Lo que quiero representar es una historia que viene desde nuestros abuelos.

Existían dos caciques que pertenecían a grupos distintos y cada uno tenía una hija.

Un día secuestraron a las hijas de los dos caciques, las mataron y descuartizaron.

Fue ahí donde comenzó la guerra de nuestros abuelos, de los dos grupos, y ya no paró más. Estoy mostrando la historia de mi comunidad.

The challenge of this encounter is adapting to the piece of wood that each one gets, whether it is soft or tough. What makes this one interesting is its natural and organic parts and how I assemble those to what I do: geometric, simple lines are why I decided to make a metamorphosis.

Whether the tree is turning into cubes, or cubes into a tree. I want to play with all my space, that is why I want to break away from the single piece and have others that are separate but complement with the drawing.

Since I have been working with handicrafts for many years, I usually make small things.

This is the first time I am making something this big. Our pieces are characterized by being inspired on nature and the richness of a region. In Villamontes there are many birds and fishes; there are many species being extinct. Shad is the most recognized and traditional species in Villamontes.

According to a tale told by my mom, which everybody is familiar with: An ayoreo found a young man that was somewhat estrange and seemed more like a god. The man invited him to the community and he always went hunting and gathering honey with the young man. When they were short of water, the young man would squeeze his hair and water would come out. He decided to stay in the community. One day, the Ayoreo went out, leaving the young man alone but forgot to tell the community not to bother, play, or touch him, because the other people of the community would always watch him with a strange look. The boys and other young men played with him until he got mad, raised his arms, and out came thunderbolts. It started raining tremendously, and he was so angry that he threw the people in the water and they turned into toads. This is a good story to tell when we are short of rain, in drie season.

I want to represent a story that comes from our grandfathers. There were two chiefs that belonged to different communities, and each had a daughter. One day, somebody kidnapped both daughters, killed them and dismembered there bodies. That is when the war between our grandfathers and communities began, and never ended. I am showing the history of my community.

Mi obra se trata de un músico, es típico de la zona donde yo vivo, se refleja la cultura chiquitana, por eso yo elegí este tema porque allá se ve todavía la flauta, el bombo, los instrumentos chiquitanos.

Me toco el cupesí, por suerte el tronco me está ayudando a realizar lo que tenía en mente. Estoy utilizando motosierra y gubias pequeñas y grandes para hacer el rostro, porque la madera es dura.

My piece is about a musician, typical from the region I live in, it reflects the Chiquitano culture and that is why I chose this theme. One can still appreciate flutes, bass drums and other typical Chiquitano instruments. I was given a carob trunk and luckily its form is helping me realize what I had in mind. I am using a chainsaw, small and big gouges to make the face, because the wood is so tough.

Es la primera vez que trabajo con motosierra y es una experiencia nueva.

Estoy haciendo un ave que en Villamontes se conoce como búho y los guaraníes llaman Sumurucucu.

Escogí esta ave porque es del Chaco y tiene muchas historias o mitos. Por ejemplo, cuando aparece el búho en algunas partes, como en la esquina de la casa, algunos lo toman como mala señal.

En otros casos también dicen que trae suerte y lo tienen dentro de sus casas. En eso está inspirada esta obra.

I am making a bird that is known in Villamontes as an owl, and the Guarani know it as Sumurucucu. I chose this bird because it comes from the Chaco and has many stories and myths. For example, when the owl appears in some places, like the corner of a house, some people take it as a bad signal. In other cases, it may also bring luck and people hold it in their homes. The piece is inspired in this bird full of interesting things, and because it’s from the Chaco region. It is the first time I work with a chainsaw. It is a new experience.

Mi obra es algo religioso, el sufrimiento de Jesús antes de morir, cuando alzó la mirada al cielo y dijo: En tus manos encomiendo mi espíritu. Ese es el mensaje. También tallé a la Virgen María en el reverso.

Es la primera vez que trabajo con algarrobo, yo estoy acostumbrado a trabajar en roble y cedro, maderas más blandas. Lo más lindo del Encuentro fue compartir técnicas con los compañeros; nunca se termina de aprender, cada día son experiencias nuevas que yo adquiero de mis compañeros y ellos de mí: un buen intercambio de experiencias.

My piece is something religious, the suffering of Jesus. Before dying, he looked up to the sky and said: Into your hands I commend my spirit. That is the message.

I have also carved the Virgin Mary in the reverse side. It is the first time I work with Carob, normally I work with Oak and Cedar, softer woods.

The beauty of the encounter was sharing techniques with other companions. One never stops learning and each day is a new experience that I acquire from my peers, and them from me. It is a great exchange of experiences.
