It’safightthat’sdescribedinsimilarways,whetherthedescriptionis fromtheNYPDcommissioner,anex-Trinitario,oragang-busting privatedetective. However,somedifferencesregardingperceptionsofgangsemerge whenthethreediscusshowwellthefightagainstthemisgoing.
NewYorkgangscommit“robberies,anddealdrugs,”said CommissionerJamesO’Neillinarecentnewsconference.“Butthey alsodocreditcardfraud,checkforgingschemes,identitytheft,phone scams,andorganizedretailtheft.Gangsarealsoinvolvedinhuman trafficking,includingtheprostitutionofunderagegirls.”
Similarly,aformergangmemberwhoagreedtoaninterviewwith PIX11Newsonaconditionofanonymitysaidabouthisgang,the Trinitarios,“They’resellingdrugs,theysendtheirpeopletokill anyone.Alotofpeople[inthegangare]doingrobberies.”
“Kidnappng,extortion,murder,narcoticsandintimidation,”arethe activitiesofNewYorkCitygangsdescribedbyManuelGomez,a Bronx-basedprivatedetectivewhoseworkhasgottenmultiplegang membersarrestedforavarietyofcrimes,includingtheoneshelisted.
Whileallthree—theNYPDtopbrass,theex-gangmemberandthe privateeye—agreethatlawenforcementhasbeentakingaction
ferenceofopinionwhenthemendiscuss detailsofthefightagainstthemostlyyoungmenthattheNYPDsays . Specifically,theopinionsdivergesomewhatregardingthegangmost prominentlyintheheadlinesnow.
“We’regoingtocontinuetotargetnotjusttheTrinitarios,”saidNYPD ChiefofDetectivesDeclanSheaatanewsconferencelastmonth aboutgangactivity,“butanystreetgangthat’sinvolvedinviolencein NewYorkCity,”hesaid. However,saidGomez,theprivatedetectiveandformerNYPDofficer, moreneedstobedonetogettheTrinitarios’leaderbackintocustody.
“EdibertoSantanaistheleaderoftheTrinitariosforthethree boroughs[ofBrooklyn,theBronxandManhattan],”GomeztoldPIX11 News.“He’srunningthestreetsrightnow,ontheloose.”
Santanaisfreeon$100,000bondinacaseofweaponspossessionin Brooklyn.TheNYPDarrestedhimonthechargeinJune,but, accordingtotheBrooklynDistrictAttorney’sOffice,prosecutorsasked thatSantanabeheldwithoutbail.Instead,aD.A.’soffice spokespersonsaid,“Thejudgeset$50,000cashor$100,000bond.”
Santana,28,hasthetitle“ElPrimero,”or“TheFirstOne”inthegang, aswellasanickname,accordingtooneoftheTrinitarios’former members.“FlacoVeneno,”isSantana’snameonthestreet,according totheex-Trinitario,whoseidentityisbeingprotectedbyPIX11News.
Thenickname,inDominicanslang,means“SkinnyPoison.”
Santanagotbailfortheweaponspossessionchargedespitethefact thathehadalreadybeenoutonbailatthetimefora2017criminal “Hetriedtoburnthepeoplealiveinthehome,”Gomezsaidaboutthe earliercase,inwhichSantanahadbeenchargedwitharson,burglary andrecklessendangerment.“Sohe’soutwalkingthestreet,this killer,”Gomezsaid,“andhe’sbeeninvolvedinfiveothermurders,free asday.”
GomezmaintainsthatSantanahasbeenconnectedtoatleasttwo casesonwhichPIX11Newshasreported.Eventhoughotheralleged TrinitariosmemberswerearrestedforthemurdersofMohammed Jallohin2010,andHanselAriastwoyearslater,Santana,asthe Trinitarios’ElPrimero,wouldhavehadaroleindirectingthosetwo murders,and,probably,others,accordingtoGomez,andaccordingto theformerTrinitariosgangmember.
“‘Somebodyhastodie’,hesays,”theex-gangmembertoldPIX11 Newsaboutanorderhesaidhe’dheardtheTrinitariosleadergive.
“‘Yo,you’vegottagooverthere,andkillthisguy.’That’sit,”theformer gangmember,whohasmovedoutofNewYorkstateforhissafety, saidinaFaceTimeinterview.
“Junior’sdeathnevershould’vehappened,”saidGomez,aboutthe Trinitariosgang,theirleader,andhisattachmenttothe12men chargedinthemostprominentmurderinNewYorkCityinmemory, thatofJuniorGuzman-Feliz,onJune20th.
GomezsaidthatnotonlyisSantanaconnectedtotheorderthat resultedinthemenfatallystabbingandslashingthe15year-old PoliceExplorerinanapparentcaseofmistakenidentity,butthat “JoseMuniz,theguyholdingthebigblackmachete”intheattackon Junior,hadalsobeen“involvedintheHanselAriasmurder,”according toGomez.“PIX11hasthe[surveillance]videoofhimrunningdown thestreettokillHanselArias,”theprivatedetectivesaid.
PIX11Newsvideoshowsanumberofallegedgangmemberschasing Ariasminutesbeforehisfatalstabbingsixyearsagothismonth.
GomezmaintainsthatoneoftheallegedgangmembersisMuniz, whohasbeenindictedonmurderandgangrelatedchargesinthe caseofthemurderofJuniorGuzman-Feliz.
GomezsaidthatifMunizhadbeenarrestedinrelationtothe2012 Ariasmurder,hewouldn’thavebeenfreetohavetakentheorderthat ultimatelyledtoJuniorGuzman-Feliz’sdeath.
PIX11NewsaskedtheNYPDcommandforcommentonSantana’s status,duringanewsconferencelastmonth.
“There’songoinginvestigationsgoingonrightnow,”repliedChiefof DepartmentTerenceMonahan,“sowe’renotgoingtomentionanyone elsethat’snotincustody.”
Again,theNYPDhadarrestedSantanathispastJune.Ajudgeruled thatheshouldbeletgoonbail.
Sincethen,ElPrimeroandhisfellowallegedgangmembersappear tohavebeenquitebusy.

“Sothatpeoplecansee[that]youdon’tevenseewhenthey’rethere,” GomeztoldPIX11News.“Thatthepoliceneverpayattention.That’s scary.Thisishowbrazentheyare.”
ThattheTrinitarios,and,probably,othergangs,aregettingmorebold, Gomez,theformergangmember,andNYPDtopbrassagree.
“Wehavetodomore,”O’NeillsaidinthenewsconferenceinJulythat focusedonfightinggangviolence.“Homicidesandshootingsareway down,butwecandomore.”
“Everytimetheygetmorebiggermorebiggest,”saidtheex-Trinitario, referringtothegang’srecruitmentefforts.“Theygetmorepeoplein thegang.”
Tohelpstemrecruiting,andtohelpstoptheviolence,theNYPD brass,theformergangmemberandthegang-bustingprivateeyealso agreethatittakesmorethanjustmakingarrests.

“Itcan’tjustbetheNYPD,”O’Neillsaid.“It’sgottobeeverybodyin thecity.It’sgottobeall8.6millionNewYorkers.That’stheturning pointthatI’mlookingfor.”
