NEWYORK Hebecamethefaceofbailreformaerhechosetoremaininjailratherthantakeapleadealforanattemptedmurderhedidnʼt commit,butPedroHernandezhadotherchargespendingagainsthiminanunderlyingcase.OnTuesday,thosechargeswerealladjourned. Hernandez,18,hadstillfacedaburglaryandrecklessdrivingchargeaerhisattemptedmurderchargewasdismissedlastyearinahigh-profile case.

Inthatcase,Hernandezʼs$250,000bondwasreducedto$105,000,aertheRobertF.KennedyFoundation,abailreformadvocacygroup,got involved.ItlearnedofHernandezʼssituationinpartduetoPIX11Newscoverage.

Still,arobberychargeandarecklessdrivingchargeremainedonHernandezʼsrecordfromanothercase.Hefacedatotalof11chargesinthelast twoyears.LateTuesday,ajudgeadjournedthefinaltwocharges.

“Webelieveindispositionsoutsidethecriminaljusticesystemwheneverpossibleandwhentheyprovideconsiderationoftherightsofthe victim,fairnesstothedefendantanddonotcompromisepublicsafety,”DistrictAttorneyDarcelClarksaid.

Hernandezhasbeenacceptedbyacollegeand,ifheenrollsandcompletesasemester,thecourtwillfullydismissbothcases,Clarksaid.They “believethisdispositionwillgiveMr.Hernandeztheopportunitytoputhislifeontherightpathtosucceed.”

ManuelGomez,aprivateinvestigatorwhogatheredtheevidencethatledtoHernandezʼscasesbeingclosed,celebratedthedecision.
