FRONT SYSTEM LOWER SPINDLE OR FORK Models 40T-420T-430T 1. R&R AND OVERHAUL. The pro-

cedure for removing either the fork and wheel assembly on the single wheel version or the lower spindle and wheels assembly on the dual wheel version is evident after an examination of the unit and reference to Figs. JD800 and 800A. It will be noted, however, that the fork or spindle are retained by four heat treated Allen head cap screws (27). Ordinary cap screws should never be used at this point.

When installing the dual front wheels, tighten the bearing adjusting nut to a torque of 35-40 Ft.-Lbs., then back the nut off one castellation and insert the cotter pin.

To adjust the bearings on the fork mounted single front wheel, install more than enough shims (40—Fig, JD800A) and measure the end play of axle shaft (37), Then, remove a total thickness of shims equal to 0.0000,003 more than the measured end play. For example, if the measured end play was 0.005, then remove 0,0050.008 thickness of shims. This pro-

Notches in flange of knuckle. Install thrust washer (68) so that tangs of same fit into notches of vertical spindle tube. On I-beam type axles, install thrust bearing (B-Fig. JD802) with numbered side down. On all models, when installing the steering arms (55), vary the number of 0.010 and 0.027 thick shims (54) to give the spindle an end play of 0,000-0.030 and tighten cap screw (57) to a torque of 60-65 Ft.-Lbs. When installing front wheels, tighten tbe bearing adjusting nuts to a torque of 35-40 Ft,-Lbs,, then back t h e n u t off one castellation and insert the cotter pin.

TIE RODS & TOE IN All Models So Equipped 3. Tbe procedure for removing tbe tie-rods and/or tie ends is evident. Wben reassembling, vary the lengtb of eacb tie-rod to obtain tbe recommended toe-in of ^8-^2 incb.

NOTE: Steering gear must be in its mid, or bigh point position and front wheels must be poining straight ahead when making the toe-in adjustment. Be certain to adjust each tie-rod an equal amount.

Remove cap screws (57) and bump steering arms (55) from knuckles. Knuckles can be withdrawn from below and needle bearings (69) can be driven from tbe axle extensions.

New needle bearings should be pressed or driven into position using a special driver sucb as John Deere tool number AM-457T. Apply the driver against tbe end of tbe bearing wbich bas the manufacturers number stamped on it. Wben reinstalling knuckles in tubular type axles on 40S prior to serial number 69404, make certain tbat tangs on tbrust wasber (64-Fig. JD801) fit tbrougb slots in seal retainer wasber (66) and into

On models 40, 420, and 430, disconnect tie-rod ends from center steering arm (87-Figs. JD802 or 803), unbolt the pivot brackets (85 and 89) and roll the axle assembly away from tractor. On 4201, 420W and 430W, disconnect tie-rod ends from center steering arm and remove one axle extension and wheel assembly. Remove the front pivot shaft (86-Fig. JD804). Loosen lock nut and set screw and bump rear pivot shaft (53) forward until shaft clears support. Withdraw the axle assembly from front support.

On 4401, raise front wheels slightly and remove the wheels and hubs. Disconnect the tie-rod ends from steering arms, them remove jam nut and set screw from front support as shown in Fig. JD805A. Drive pivot shaft forvmrd and out of front support, then slide front axle assembly out of front support.

On all other models, disconnect tie-rod ends, loosen jam nut (N) and using an Allen wrench, unscrew set screw (S) as shown in Fig. JDS05.

Bump the pivot shaft out and withdraw the axle assembly.

On all models, check the pivot shaft bushings inside diameter against the values which follow: 40S 1.004-1.006 420I-420W-430W (front) 2.002-2.004 (rear) 1.377-1.379 All Others 1.377-1,379 If the bushings are excessively wom, install new bushings, using a closely piloted arbor, and ream them to the desired inside diameter.

connect upper and lower radiator hoses. On early models, remove the Allen head cap screw from front of steering shaft and slide the steering shaft rearward and out of way. Note: On models serial number 125001 and up, it will be necessary to drive roll pin from coupling at rear of steering shaft before shaft can be moved rearward. On 40T, 420T and 430T, unbolt steering gear support from front end support and lift the gear unit from tractor. On all other models, unbolt steering gear housing from gear support and turn the gear housing until the stub (worm) shaft will clear the radiator; also unbolt fan shroud from radiator.

MANUAL STEERING On all models, remove the radiator SYSTEM mounting bracket bolts and lift radiaR&R FROKT END UNIT All Models Except 4401 5. To remove the complete front end unit including front support, wheels and axle or lower spindle or fork, proceed as follows: Remove hood and grille, drain cooling system and dis-

tor from tractor. After radiator is removed, support front half of tractor, unbolt front support from engine and roll front end unit away from tractor.

When reassembling, reverse the disassembly procedure and tighten the front support retaining cap screws to a torque of 85-90 Ft.-Lbs.

Model 4401 5A. Remove the hood and the two grille supports. Remove the screen from front of grille and place a chain or strap sling around top of grille as shown in Fig. JD808. Remove the two cap screws which pilot the grille to the front support, pull the hollow dowels and lift off grille. Note: If dowels are stuck they can be pulled by

JOHN using a piece of hollow pipe with a cap screw and washers as shown. Drive out roll pin from coupling at rear of steering shaft as shown in Fig. JD808A, then, disconnect steering shaft from steering gear worm shaft and slide steering shaft rearward. Loosen cap screws attaching steering gear housing to steering gear support and rotate steering gear housing clockwise (viewed from top) until steering gear worm shaft will clear radiator.

Drain cooling system and remove left hand side rail, fan shroud and radiator. Support front of tractor, then remove the cap screws that attach front support to engine and roll front support, steering gear support and axle assembly away from tractor.

Suport tractor and loosen the pivot pin retaining jam nut and set screw as shown in Fig. JD805B. Drive pivot shaft from front support and remove front axle assembly.

Inspect seals (17--Fig. JD811 or 812) and bushing (16) in lower part of front support and renew as necessary.

6C. OVERHAUL. To overhaul the front support (37—Fig. JD813), remove hood and the two grille supports. Remove the screen from front 6B. OVERHAUL. Slide the steering shaft rearward until free from worm shaft. Note: On tractors serial number 125,001 and up, it is necessary to drive out roll pin from coupling at rear of steering shaft before steering shaft can be moved rearward. Remove the bolts attaching the gear housing to the shaft tube or support (11—Fig. JD811 or 814). On axle type tractors disconnect the center steering arm from the vertical shaft. Lift steering gear unit from tractor.

The procedure for disassembling and reassembling the removed unit is evident after referring to the accompanying exploded views. Bushings (4) should be reamed after installation to an inside diameter of 0.999-1.000 for models 40S prior to serial number 69,404, 40U prior to serial number 63,120 and 1.124-1.125 for all other models.

front support and lift steering gear and support from tractor as a unit.

Remove left hand side rail, drain cooling system and remove fan shroud and radiator.

Raise front wheels slightly and remove the wheel and hub units. Remove jam nut and set screws from front support, drive pivot shaft forward out of front support, then slide front axle out of front support.

Inspect seals (35—Fig. JD813) and bushing (36) and renew as necessary.

When renewing seals install both seal lips down and position upper seal so top surface of same is 1/32-inch below top of counterbore. Grille support bar can be removed after loosening the two set screws.

STEERING GEAR For the purpose of this manuaL the steering gear assembly will include the gear housing, gear support and all parts contained therein.

It should be noted that model 40S at serial number 69404 and 40U at serial number 63120, changed from a one stud to a two stud lever shaft.

All Models 7. ADJUSTMENT. The cam and lever type steering gear units are provided with two adjustments; one for the worm shaft bearings, the other for mesh or backlash.

8. WORM SHAFT BEARINGS. The worm shaft bearings should be adjusted to provide a slight amount of rotational drag. To adjust the bearings on models 40S prior to serial number 69404 and 40U prior to serial number 63120, vary the number of shims (7— Fig. JD811) which are located between the gear housing rear cover (21) and the housing. On all other models, adjust the bearings by varying the number of shims (7—Fig. JD814) which are located between the gear housing front cover (8) and the housing. Shims are available in thicknesses of 0.002, 0.003 and 0.010.

9. BACKLASH. With the worm shaft bearings adjusted as outlined in the preceding paragraph 8, support front of tractor to remove any unnecessary load from the gear unit and place the steering gear in its midposition by turning the steering wheel half way between full right and full left turn. Loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting screw (14—Figs. JD811 or 814) down until a barely perceptible drag is experienced when turning the steering wheel through the mid or high point position. When properly adjusted, the steering gear will have a slight amount of backlash at all other positions.

10. R&R AND OVERHAUL. To r e move the steering gear unit from tractor, first remove hood, grille and on early models, remove the Allen head cap screw from front of steering shaft.

POWER STEERING SYSTEM Various combinations of power steering equipment have been used on the Dubuque built tractors beginning with tractor serial number 80,001. On tractors with serial numbers 80.001 through 131.817, the pressurized working fluid was supplied by the "TouchO-Matic" system pump and reservoir and was regulated, and directed to the power cylinder, by a flow divider valve (K—Fig. JD817). Effective at tractor serial number 131,818 and up, the flow divider valve was discontinued and a separate, belt driven pum.p with a reservoir was installed as shown in Fig. JD816.

On tractors serial numbers 80,001 through 125,000, a power cylinder was incorporated in the steering linkage as shown at (H) in Fig. JD817. Effective serial number 125,001 and up, the power cylinder was removed from the steering linkage and an integral power cylinder, rack and pinion assembly was incorporated into the steering gear support as shown in Fig. JD821A. The control valve, except for a change from Woodruff keys to pins in the ends of the shafts (at serial number 133665), has leniained the same.

BLEEDING Models Prior to Ser. No. 131,818 llB. All air must be bled from system to prevent noisy and/or erratic steering. To bleed system, start engine and turn steering wheel full left and full right several times. Then stop engine and recheck the "Touch-OMatic" reservoir fluid level.

reservoir, stop engine and refill reservoir to **fuir* mark if necessary. Install reservoir cover and be sure slots in washer (2—Fig. JD816A) face cover as they act as a breather for the system.

TROUBLE SHOOTING All Models

llD. The accompanying table lists troubles which may be encountered in operating the power steering system.

The procedure for correcting most of the troubles is evident; however, for those not readily remedied, refer to the a p p r o p r i a t e s u b s e q u e n t paragraphs.

OPERATING PRESSURE AND RELIEF VALVE Models Prior to Ser. No. 131,818

12. A pressure check of the power steering system relief valve can be

made in the following manner: Connect a high pressure test gage in series between the upper cylinder hose and steering valve as shown in Fig. JD815.

Start engine and allow to run until hydraulic system oil reaches normal operating temperature. With steering wheel held hard against stop at either extreme left or extreme right hand position and with engine running at high idle speed, the gage pressure should be 950-1050 psi. If pressure is not as specified, remove relief valve plug and vary the number of shims under relief spring. Adding shims will increase pressure.

If operating pressure cannot be restored with shims, it will be necessary to renew or recondition the hydraulic pump as outlined in paragraph 120 or 121.
