A Message From The President & CEO A NEW YEAR BEGINS - WELCOME 2022!

took a moment to look back at what I wrote for the January 2021 edition of this publication. I found I had a lot of hope for us, as in anticipation of the pandemic coming to an end. I truly had no consideration for the possibility we may still be tangled in it an entire year down the road. I recall at the onset of this, the moment the initial shut down went into effect, that I felt “this will all be over 8 weeks from now”. We sure have learned that it will run the course it is here to run. We have also started to learn how to live with it rather then hide away from it.

Theaters of all types are open to entertain us, and retail shops are gaining momentum. We are living again, and that feels great!

In the twenty-two months since Covid-19 took hold here, our resiliency has certainly been tested. Today, as we look forward to a fresh start with a new year, I do consider what the pandemic situation may be by the end of the year. No more assumptions that this will be truly behind us, yet the hope for that remains. We are continually gaining confidence in getting back in action and have come to a point of navigating how to do so safely versus not doing so at all.

This event is going to be a super fun and fresh take on an old classic. We are migrating our standing committees to more in person presentation modes.

Our networking programs have been developing their community outreach components and making great things happen! We will be introducing training and enrichment opportunities throughout the year. We are looking forward and seeing greatness ahead for this year.

As we step off into 2022, I am again hopeful for what the year will bring. Restaurant and beverage establishments are busier. Real estate, manufacturing, and industry never skipped a step during covid. Their challenge, as for most businesses, is having enough workers to keep up on demand. Schools are open and kids are back to learning and socializing with new protocols in place. Many meetings for work, health visits, or any other focus are taking place in a transitional hybrid fashion.

I encourage you to engage with us on any of these various opportunities. I invite you to attend, learn, mentor and be mentored along the way. Together we will make not only our community better, but we will inspire others, and grow ourselves in the process.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Caltrans Hero Awarded State’s Highest Honor for Public Servants The State of California has awarded Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker Royce Hiner with a Governor’s State Employee Medal of Valor for courage in the face of danger. Hiner received the Silver Medal of Valor for risking his life to save another.

“Many honorable servants to the state of California risk danger as part of their everyday duties.

But occasionally someone goes beyond the line of duty to display e x t ra o rd i n a r y Royce Hiner courage in the face of danger,” said Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin. “Royce Hiner is one such public servant. We honor and thank him for his bravery and are proud to have him in our Caltrans family.” Hiner was traveling to a routine maintenance call on July 25, 2018, on Interstate 5 near Corning, when he encountered a van that was on fire.

MEMBER HIGHLIGHT Dr. Toshi Hart

As a dental director and student loan repayment program recipient, she established the Alliance Medical Center Dental Clinic in Healdsburg, Calif., which is a non-profit clinic in a area experiencing a health professional shortage.

Dr. Bob Venn invited her to Modesto to take over his generational practice after reading an article about her work and who by coincidence was her husband’s childhood dentist.

After decades of caring for children in the Central Valley, Dr. Hart sought answers to the local high rate of dental decay. She was puzzled why one child in a family would have a high cavity rate but, siblings raised in the same household would not. A pivotal point came when she was encouraged to learn about Airway Development by respected TMD specialist Dr. Jack Holt, who had severe sleep apnea and wanted to be her first patient.

With the latest research in Craniofacial Epigenetics, she learned that growth and development can happen at any age; contrary to what is taught in dental school. The bony and soft tissue structure of jaws determine the upper airway. Dr. Hart hypothesized that mouth breathing is correlated to cavities. She recently published a paper where she proposed a novel method to reduce decay by over 75%.

Dr. Hart expanded her dental practice to airway development in infants, children, and adults using laser treatment and oral appliances.

Dr. Hart uses the Solea Laser which allows for rapid and virtually painless treatment of cavities, frenectomies in infants and children.

The release of functional restrictions in the lips and tongue can prevent an infant from nursing and children from proper craniofacial

development. The Solea Laser can also be used in a 5-minute procedure for adults who snore.

Dr. Hart incorporates a holistic health approach where she collaborates with medical and ancillary providers Dr. Toshi Hart to help patients with non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical solutions. Dr. Hart screens every patient for Sleep Disordered Breathing and Sleep Apnea. These symptoms can be serious, affecting every aspect of health including daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, fatigue, snoring, high blood pressure, reflux, teeth grinding, diabetes, allergies, anxiety, ADHD, bed wetting to name a few. Sleep Apnea is a common disorder in both men and women with up to 85% of those patients undiagnosed and unaware of the disease, treatment options or consequences.

Dr. Hart is a Diplomate of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy, a national Clinical Advisor and featured instructor for Vivos, a Breathe Institute Ambassador and an Oral Myofunctional Therapist. Dr. Hart is passionate about treating the root cause of dental problems versus treating the traditional downstream effects.

Papapolloni Brings Mediterranean Flavors To Modesto

With an extensive background in the restaurant business from dishwashing, cleaning, cooking, creating recipes, to managing, Alonso has spent more than 20 years in the industry. In 1995, he was a chef at a fine dining restaurant in the Bay Area and then he got into management for several restaurants, including Olive Garden and Chipotle. After several years managing he decided to purchase his first restaurant, which was Papapavlo's Mediterranean Bistro & Bar. Nine years ago Alonso expanded his restaurant holdings when he opened Papapolloni Mediterranean Bistro in Oakdale.

Since that time, he sold Papapavlo's and has re-opened Papapolloni Mediterranean Bistro on McHenry Avenue in Modesto.

The new site, which has a decor of contemporary Mediterranean, is 7,000 square feet and can accomodate large events and private parties.

Some customer favorites are the lamb chops that are marinated, seasoned and charbroiled and served with seasoned vegetables and rice pilaf; the pistachio crusted salmon topped with lemon caper beurre blanc sauce, served with baby red mashed potatoes and seasoned vegetables; and their Spanakopita.

They have some healthy options with an assortment of salads including a chopped chicken salad, the shrimp and avocado salad, and the seafood salad.

“We don’t use anything pre-made or frozen,” Alonso said. “We stick with everything fresh. It is like cooking at home.

It is hard to find places nowadays where they use fresh fish and fresh steaks, fresh chicken.

Everything is so quick that they want to do frozen items. We do everything from scratch, our salads, cakes, we do everything here. It is a lot more work to do that but when people know about food and they go out dining once in a while or once a week they can taste the difference.”

The menu also has plenty of authentic, traditional and wellloved Italian classics like like their homemade lasagna, spaghetti bolognese, pasta primavera, eggplant parmigiana, and pizzas. They also offer steaks like their peppercorn ribeye with a burgundy mushroom demi-glaze sauce, and a filet mignon with a portobello mushroom merlot demi-glaze sauce, both served with mashed potatoes and vegetables.

“We use the best quality steaks,” Alonso said. “We do not go cheap. We get the best. I don’t think anybody can beat us with the steaks and the lamb chops. We try to keep great consistency and quality.”

The restaurant can host special events, parties, and they also have catering options for occasions outside the restaurants.

As an independent restaurant owner, Alonso knows that success only comes with lots of passion and hard work.

“You need to love what you do,” Alonso said. “There is something different every day. I feel like I prepared myself before I got into this business. I think that is the key. I go to work every day in the morning for my family. I do what I do for my family.”

Stanislaus County Area Manufacturing and Maintenance Joint Apprenticeship Program The Stanislaus County Area Manufacturing and Maintenance Joint Apprenticeship Committee was organized to support local companies in their preparation of qualified employees to fill their needs for skilled manufacturing and maintenance personnel needs. The Committee’s membership is open to any local company desiring to hire and train, in cooperation with the local community colleges, employees in one of six occupational titles, who in turn receive a California Division of Apprenticeship Standards Journeyman Certificate upon successful completion of the program.

The Committee and its members participate in job fairs, participate in high school and community college advisory committees to promote interest and training in manufacturing and industrial maintenance careers.

EDUCATION

Recruiting opportunities are enhanced through these activities and the Committee assists with the hiring, the indenture of Apprentices and enrollment in the program’s Related Supplemental Instruction Program conducted by the local community college.

The Power of Pixels

BY Andres Mendez / Director of Marketing, Visit Modesto Wouldn’t it be nice if you could send advertisements to customers that walked through your store specific to the products they were looking at while at your location? Well, you can do this -- but with the traffic to your website instead of your store front.

The way to retarget (sending targeted advertisements based off that audience’s previous online behavior) site visitors based off the actions they take on your website is through a ‘pixel’ - a piece of code that lives on the back end of your website.

This pixel allows you to track and retarget traffic specific to the web pages they visited and gives you data to create ‘lookalike audiences’ that have similar behaviors to those who have already engaged with your site.

Pixels can be generated through advertising tools such as Facebook Ads Manager (which includes Instagram), TikTok Ads Manager, and even email. Once you generate the unique pixel you can place this pixel on your site and begin retargeting web traffic with hyper focused digital advertisements.

Utilizing that pixel, you can now specifically target traffic that visited the ‘Women’s Shoes’ section of your site with ads on Facebook and Instagram.

However, it doesn’t stop there…because of that pixel you are now able to target people who have not yet engaged with your site but behave just like the audience you are retargeting. This allows you the opportunity to expand your net of whom you advertise to and talk to people who are most likely to click a ‘purchase’ button.

Next month I will break down the methodology behind creating effective photo and video content that drive results and how you can begin creating content for your own digital ad campaigns.
