£188,800 GRANT TO WOODBRIDGE COMMUNITY, ARTS & YOUTH CENTRE

East Suffolk Council has thrown its support behind the proposed landmark community, arts and youth centre in Woodbridge by granting £188,800 to the social enterprise Jetty Lane CIC. Jetty Lane CIC is working to build and run a new centre to support young people, artists and community groups in the heart of Woodbridge. Since Woodbridge Youth Club was demolished in 2017, many youth, arts and community organisations have been homeless.

East Suffolk Council’s financial backing covers pre-construction costs for the planned development located near the River Deben. The proposed centre, which submitted for full planning in August, will provide much-needed space for theatre groups, martial arts and exercise classes, Woodbridge Scouts, Just42 youth charity, services for the elderly, local businesspeople, artists and more.

Caroline Page, Chair of Jetty Lane CIC, commented: “We are extremely grateful to East Suffolk Council for their generous response to our funding application.

It is a great boost to the cause and guarantees that the money we raise from here-on-in will be spent on construction. Woodbridge is in desperate need of community space since Woodbridge Youth Club was demolished in early 2017, leaving many local community, arts and youth initiatives homeless. As the town continues to expand with new housing developments, there is a greater need than ever to build a new space for community and local groups to thrive.”

DECEMBER DEADLINE

Jetty Lane was founded by County Councillor for Woodbridge Caroline Page, Caroline Rutherford from local youth charity Just42, Group Scout leader, 1st Woodbridge Adam Thorpe, and local resident Cordelia Richman. The planned building will comprise eight individual studios for artists, two halls, hireable space for community groups to use at an affordable rent, as well as office facilities provided on a commercial basis.

NEWS SPINE-CHILLING OPPORTUNITY FOR JULIE AND FRANCIS Winifred Meeks, a film by Jason Figgis, who has worked with such names as John Hurt, Alan Rickman and Richard E Grant, produced by John West and starring Lara Belmont (Rise of the Footsoldier, The War Zone and Henry VIII) is currently shooting in Suffolk with the involvement of two women from Woodbridge.

to bring up her two children and now works freelance in textiles and machine embroidery. She says: “It’s nice to be asked to be involved in a film shot in Suffolk. I love ghost stories and the whole Gothic feel and can’t wait to start designing a costume for the ghost. It’s a 1920’s dress which means I’m returning to something I love – period costumes.”

Julie Abbott (pictured left) plays the ghost and is also the locations manager. She has been working very hard to find suitable and atmospheric locations for the film, a ghost story set on the Suffolk coast which is very much influenced by M. R James.

She is also singing a traditional folk song in the film.

Winifred Meeks is the unsettling tale of author Anna James (35) who secludes herself in a former sea captain’s residence to work on her new novel only to discover she’s not entirely alone!

Frances Catchpool is the dress designer and will be making the dress for the ghost. This is also her first film and Jason and John are very much looking forward to working with her.

Born in Ipswich, Julie has lived in Woodbridge for 27 years. She has been singing since the age of 19 and has sung locally in clubs and pubs. She recently recorded two songs on an album with Station 27. Julie, who has two children, researches and writes about East Anglian ghosts, history and folklore and has set up a Facebook site called East Anglian Curious Tales.

She says: “I love East Anglian ghost stories and feel hugely privileged to be involved in a film set in Suffolk and influenced by the ghost stories of M. R. James.”

Frances, who studied at the Wimbledon School of Art, was also born in Ipswich but has lived in Woodbridge for 24 years. She took a career break

BRESSINGHAM GARDENS ART COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION Bressingham Gardens have long been inspirational to gardeners, from novice to expert, opening up the world of plants and design, illustrating the excitement and passion of gardening.

This year the Bloom family invited artists to share in that beauty by creating a piece of work based on their interpretation of the internationally renowned gardens.

Open to all artists’ styles and mediums, the exhibition and competition was a wonderful opportunity to exhibit a piece of original artwork in Bressingham High Barn during the Bressingham Garden Inspiration Weekend, September 8-9, and to win a three-night stay in Bressingham Hall, a lovely Grade II listed mansion house set amongst the 12 acres of gardens.

The winning piece in oils on canvas was Bressingham Colour & Contrast by Allan Williams from Lower Hacheston.

Although there was some fantastic artwork to select from, from all over Suffolk and Norfolk, in all sorts of styles and mediums, the winning piece was chosen unanimously by the three judges out of the 72 exhibited.

The runner-up was Vivienne Weeks from near Diss, for her piece entitled Bressingham Bounty.

MAKING HISTORY

This November marks a hundred years since the end of the First World War. The Great War. The War That Will End War according to HG Wells.

The annual Shuck Festival took place in The Longshed on Woodbridge waterfront in late September. Stallholders, musicians and shanty singers generated that friendly feeling that always accompanies this event. The popup restaurant was a huge success and demonstrated how flexible this space can be for public events.

And this year – as every year – we remember the dead, the damaged. It’s particularly plangent to be remembering them in a small community like ours, a community crowded into our small market square and recognising the names on the memorial as surnames of our family, our neighbours.

Some people say they “won’t wear a poppy”. People who find the poppy symbol objectionable should maybe remember that it is only recently that we have fought wars with career soldiers. The bulk of deaths in the First and Second World Wars, and beyond have been conscripts or volunteers – the ‘lads who will never grow old’. People like us, our children and our grandchildren. Ones who were poor, or rich, or middling, who had ‘a head for figures’, were ‘good at art‘, ‘clever with their hands’, ‘a scream‘, ‘going places’, ‘an old head on young shoulders’, ‘a bit wild’, ‘dull as ditch water’. Men who were clever, funny, ambitious, capable, or nothing very special, but loved by their family. Importantly, they had all sorts of skills and potentialities and plans for a life that was snatched from them.

And they came from all around the world. I have even seen marker stones in Chinese in the military graveyards of Northern France.

I will be wearing my poppy. I will wear it to remember my great-uncle Bertie.

Orphaned at 6, he grew up in a workhouse and, too old to be conscripted, volunteered to fight. Bertie was blown to bits on the fourth day of Third Ypres. Nothing of him left to bury.

I will wear it to remember my grandfather Howard – a working man who (again) volunteered, received a direct hit when carrying a wounded man to safety, and who had a hole in his skull for the rest of his shortened and hard-working life.

I will wear it to remember all the millions of lives cut short or damaged in the name of war.

Many of those who came back from the Great War – my grandfather for one – never spoke of what they had seen and done. But they carried it with them daily, a burden of experience they had lived for us. War doesn’t only affect the physical body – it can affect your heart, your mind, your spirit. There is more than one way to ‘lose a life’.

We have a duty to remember what people experienced for us – and still do in conflicts and peace-keeping around the world. And we have a duty to try and prevent it happening in the future.

Some years back at a Maritime Woodbridge event held in one of the derelict Whisstock’s sheds, local artist Claudia Myatt heard of the dream to replace the leaky structures with a new facility. As she set up her display at this year’s Shuck Festival, she looked around at the bustling activity and summed up the reason for the enthusiasm of all the people participating with the words ‘Vision Realised’. Claudia had shared that vision. She had freely allowed the use of her artwork for the WoodbridgeWaterfront website from the very beginning. Everybody who enters the building now says the same: “What a wonderful space”. That space was much appreciated on the Sunday of the event which had some truly awful weather later in the day. The event continued in the cosy dryness of The Longshed. Even the longboat Sae Wylfing squeezed in out of the rain, so great is the space in there.

Early in October a completely different event took over the mezzanine floor in The Longshed. This time it was an international symposium of experts discussing the proposed construction of the 90ft Anglo-Saxon ship. Visitors from as far afield as Denmark, Wales and Ireland came together to exchange ideas and look in detail at the progress that has been made with the research.

Doctors and professors from universities rubbed shoulders with boat builders and archaeologists. The overhead projector was put to good use with large colourful displays and delegates were able to clamber aboard and move about inside a virtual-reality representation of the royal ship that has been created.

The meeting was chaired by Professor Martin Carver who took charge of the later ship excavations. His knowledge and humour brought everyone together as he outlined his feelings that this was about practically understanding history and firing imaginations for a period of history that is important to us as East Anglians. He said that we would be ‘making history’ with the knowledge gained from the practical archaeology of the ship build. OUT & ABOUT WOODBRIDGE CHORAL SOCIETY Marking the centenary of the end of the First World War, Woodbridge Choral Society will be performing Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem in Snape Maltings Concert Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday, November 10.

“This will be a remarkable event,” commented chairman Tricia Turner. “2018 has been a year of recalling the dreadful consequences of the war that was expected to end all future war-making. We are privileged to be able to bring this wonderful work of remembrance and hope to the people of Suffolk.”

Britten’s masterful score derives much of its extraordinary power from combining the immortal words of the Mass for the Dead with the unforgettable poetry of Wilfred Owen. One of the War Requiem’s most moving moments is Owen’s Strange Meeting when two soldiers, one from each side and each one the slayer of the other, meet beyond the grave.

WOODBRIDGE MUSEUM AFTERNOON TALKS The doors of the new Woodbridge Museum opened for the first time at Maritime Woodbridge in October. Visitors were able to see the reception area and shop. Following this the Museum closed in order to start the fitting out in earnest. Work is progressing well and before long it is hoped that the Friends of the Museum will be able to visit and see the complete building. The Museum will open its doors to the public in April 2019.

The Kingfisher Sinfonia will be sharing the platform with the 120 voice Choral Society. The society’s musical director Andrew Leach will conduct the War Requiem, with Beth Spendlove serving as the leader of the Sinfonia.

The Friday talks have made a good start and the talk at 2.30pm on Friday, December 7 will be an account by Barbara Lamberton of My Pilgrimage to Santiago del Compostella, walking the Camino pilgrims’ trail.

Also featured will be the Gainsborough Ensemble led by Kathryn Parry. The ensemble is a 12-piece chamber orchestra which will be accompanying the male soloists in the War Requiem.

The first talk in 2019 will be on January 11 when Roger Bailey will talk about his experiences of teaching in Nepal,

Claire Weston will be the soprano soloist. Ms Weston graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music. She has been a member of the company of the English National Opera and is Head of Singing at Woodbridge School. Ms Weston is also the musical director of the Suffolk Singers as well as director of Woodbridge School’s Cantabile which will be singing off-stage at this event, conducted by Chris Milton.

The baritone soloist will be Morgan Pearse. He studied at the Sydney Conservatorium and the Royal College of Music’s International Opera School.

Mr Pearse has sung principal roles with the English National Opera and the Sydney Chamber Opera.

Edward Leach will be the tenor soloist. Having studied music at Cambridge University and Singing at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Mr Leach is currently based in Frankfurt. He is a scholar of Benjamin Britten and his music, and has sung in the chorus of the War Requiem on tour in China.

Mr Leach has soloed frequently with the Woodbridge Choral Society.

DANCE FOLKUS HIT A TON A hundred people of all ages attended our October dance in Woodbridge Community Hall.

The crowd danced to Lowestoft band Skiphire and in the interval were entertained by the East Suffolk Morris Men. Building on this success, our next dance on Friday, November 2 will feature the Dance Folkus CAY band led by Harbour Lights. Our caller will be Norfolk based Jill Parson. She has called for us before and has a range of fun and occasionally tricky dances. Come and dance or even play along with the band.

We have a wonderful song spot from The Columbines. They were formed in 2015 and are a female folk and Americana trio specialising in original songs and their own arrangements of traditional folk songs. They are recognised for their striking use of close harmony singing, often a cappella, and their diverse range of instruments such as cello, Irish bouzouki, classical and steel string guitar and percussion. They have performed at many folk clubs and also at FolkEast. Don’t miss this taster song spot.

Set in 1955, Jack Frost is the grumpy landlord who hates Christmas. His housekeeper Annabelle wants a day off for Christmas to spend with her family, much to the annoyance of Frost. He grants the day off, but tells her to stay late to work the extra hours she would miss on Christmas Day. That night, Frost is visited by a ghostly apparition of his late wife Mary. She scares Frost into seeing three visions: His past – taking him back to Victorian London where we get an insight into his miserable childhood and how he has become the man he is today.

His present – where we see the family life he is missing, whereby a row 10 years previous with his only relation, his nephew, caused great upset in the family. We also see his hard working housekeeper Annabelle and how she is suffering from missing her children’s big concert.

The future – showing how life has changed and how the people of London celebrate Christmas in 2018.

The apparitions make Frost realise what he’s been missing. The morning of Christmas Day, Frost runs out in the street, wishing people a Merry Christmas and giving money to the poor. He reconciles with his nephew and family. He gives Annabelle the rest of the week off to celebrate Christmas and Frost finds a new love for the festive season, singing and dancing!

DICKENS LIVE AT THE LIBRARY

Ebenezer Scrooge’s Christmas Eve experiences may be wellknown, but this re-telling by James Hornsby brings the story to life in a brilliantly dramatic way.

James is making his third visit to Woodbridge Library following his acclaimed performances of Great Expectations and Dracula. This time he returns with a host of wonderful Dickens characters including Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim, Jacob Marley, the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come, Mr and Mrs Fezziwig and of course the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge. These are all brought to life in the inimitable style of Dickens’ own legendary public readings. The story was first published in 1843 and it is still as well loved now as it was then.

You can bring backing tracks on your phone and we can plug them in, no problem! We love the audience to get involved so there’s tiny audience percussion for everyone to join in. We also have the Big Busk Bottle for audiences to throw in contributions if they like what they hear.

Whatever we collect gets shared between whoever has performed and stays to the end of the night.

Hugh is a renowned art historian, being anexpert on Fiona Bruce’s television programme Fake or Fortune. He has spent the last 14 years researching Gainsborough’s work, contacting owners, tracking down and researching paintings. This has taken him all over the world and in his talk Hugh will tell us about this challenging project.

There is no meeting in December so the next one is on January 15 when Mark Mitchels will be talking about the River Deben.

OUT & ABOUT WOODBRIDGE ART CLUB Another busy summer exhibition closed at the end of September, but we’ll be open again for the month of November – a chance for a little Christmas shopping. There are always plenty of inexpensive pottery and lace items which make unusual gifts. As well as original greetings cards. This year we also have our 2019 anniversary calendar.

Produced by members, the original paintings reflect Woodbridge and its surroundings as well as representing what the club does. It’s a really unique gift. You will also find copies of our book recalling the club’s 50-year history.

Full of photos, it tells an interesting and inspiring story of a group of people whose vision, determination and hard work have provided Woodbridge with art club facilities that must be amongst the best in the country.

The town surely owes them a debt of gratitude. If you’ve never been into the club now is your chance.

The taster course put on in October for people who might be wondering about joining an art club was heavily oversubscribed. Obviously it was a popular idea and we hope to run another course for those who were disappointed this time.

The November exhibition will be open every weekend throughout the month from 10am-4pm. All are welcome to come in out of the weather and browse.

INNER WHEEL CLUB OF WOODBRIDGE To mark World Day of Peace on September 21, we planted a Peace Rose in Woodbridge Memorial Garden. This was organised with the assistance of Town Clerk Kate Lacey, who also joined us for the ceremony.

Following the planting, a successful coffee morning was held at the home of member Mary Walker, raising £75 for the club’s charity fund.

At our October meeting, we were joined by Julie Button of Woodbridge Emporium who entertained us with her talk about tea – including a teatasting. Having learnt about the plastic used in teabags, many of us are now planning to use loose-leaf tea in future.

ORWELL DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY On Wednesday, November 7, Dr Claire Walsh will present a talk entitled Tamara de Lempicka – Mistress of Art Deco.

Tamara de Lempicka dazzled Paris artistic circles in the 1920s and 30s and seduced with her stylish portraits. These heady years saw her immortalise the atmosphere of wealth and decadence of Paris.

Other painters oscillated between Cubism and Fauvism, but de Lempicka was one of the few to be able to embody the decorative style of Art Deco in her paintings. Stunningly beautiful, she engaged in the world of fashion and photography, as well as presenting herself as the quintessential modern, independent young woman.

She was glamorous and notorious, but her extraordinary talent confirmed her reputation as one of the most iconic painters of her generation.

Bread and Circuses is the title of our talk on Wednesday, December 5 and will be given by Libby Horner, a freelance art historian, curator, film producer, lecturer and writer.

We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months. Talks last about an hour, commencing at 2.15pm, with tea and coffee served from 1.30-2pm. Guests and non-members are welcome provided we have enough space. Exceptionally popular lectures will have a visitor limit of 20 spaces. MARTLESHAM HISTORY SOCIETY Monday, November 19: Voices from the Workhouse by Janette Robinson We all know about the workhouses from documents and newspapers, but what is missing is the voice of the inmate. This talk covers a brief history of the workhouse, but more interestingly the life of a local lady and her sisters of their time in the Wickham Market workhouse.

All meetings are held in Martlesham Heath Pavilion and start at 7.30pm.

Admission is £2.50 and meetings are open to all.

SUTTON CHRISTMAS MARKET The Rotary Club of Woodbridge Deben held their Annual Charity Busk in the Thoroughfare on Saturday, September 22.

The usual performers, plus new member Ian Wright on percussion, played from 10am to 3.30pm. Despite indifferent weather and smaller than usual numbers of people, £392 was collected, which will go towards the club’s support for a range of local, national and international charities. Once again our thanks go to the people of Woodbridge for their generosity.

Wednesday, November 7: An East Suffolk Family History

Did you manage to get away from it all this summer?

We are fortunate to have well-known local author and historian Robert Blake giving a presentation based on his own family history. Robert’s family have roots in the East Suffolk area dating back several centuries.

He will be sharing with us some examples of his extensive family archive of letters, photographs, documents and unusual memorabilia collected by his ancestors from around the world. This will be a fascinating insight into a long established East Suffolk family.

The photo is of Robert’s father, Jack Blake, aged 90 still working at Melton Forge in 1991.

Maybe you enjoyed a traditional fortnight’s holiday with the family, or perhaps you spent days out exploring the beautiful East Anglian coast. However you spent your time, I hope you returned refreshed.

For many people holidays and days out are a mere dream, but the Mothers’ Union charity AFIA (Away From It All) is able to provide breaks, days out and activities for disadvantaged and vulnerable families. The costs are met in various ways – from Mothers’ Union branches, fundraising events and grants from local agencies.

On Saturday, November 17 members of Trianon Music Group will be performing at St Andrew’s Church in Rushmere and the proceeds will go to AFIA. The concert will feature singers and brass players from the group performing a selection of light classical and popular music.

THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF A NEW PIPELINE

SPECTACULAR CHRISTMAS FLORAL DEMONSTRATION Deben Flower Club will be holding its Christmas Floral Demonstration on Tuesday, November 13 at 7.30pm in Kirton Church Hall, Church Lane, Kirton IP10 0PU. The national press headline ran, ‘Archaeologists stumble on Neolithic ritual site in Suffolk’. At first glance there isn’t an obvious connection between the construction of East Anglia ONE, a wind farm 30 miles off the Suffolk coast, and the opportunity to learn more about the development of Woodbridge and its environs through the millennia. Nevertheless the construction of the 102 turbine wind farm by Scottish Power Renewables has lead to a greater understanding of past settlement and land use in and around the town and the wider region.

When the archaeological finds were announced some months ago they caused quite a stir. Now the man in charge of the digging will give a talk to Woodbridge Society about exactly what was discovered and what the finds mean. The talk will be on Wednesday, November 7 at 7.30pm in The Abbey School Hall and will be given

by Richard Newman, Associate Director of Wardell Armstrong, a consultancy specialising in archaeological and heritage advice.

The talk is entitled A Line through Time: the Archaeology of the EA One Route and will focus especially on the very significant sites around the south of Woodbridge. All are welcome; the school hall is reached via the school entrance on Cumberland Street.

OUT & ABOUT 1st RENDLESHAM SCOUTS Thorpeness Meare Day / Scouts (10-14 Years) Each year Thorpeness Meare plays host to Scouts and Guides from all over the county who take part in a day of water based fun and games.

After arriving, being split into teams and issued with a buoyancy aid, the Scouts were given free choice of all the kayaks, canoes, rowing boats and punts available to spend the morning exploring the Meare and its many Peter Pan themed islands. In the afternoon there were a variety of team games to enjoy, including one where they had to find clothes hidden on the islands and dress up their team leader with prizes for the best costume, a tug of war where the losing team ended up going for a swim, raft racing on inflatable mattresses, before finishing off with a bracing dip in the sea to remove all the mud.

Explorers (14-18 Years) Swarm Explorer Scout Unit officially has its first members. Seven young people were invested in the swimming pool at Eyke School while working towards their Lifesaver Activity Badge. In the next few months, apart from their usual weekly meetings, they will also be camping at ScareFest in October, a joint visit to Jump Street, Colchester with Debenside Explorers at Christmas and camping again at WinterCamp in January.

HARBOUR LIGHTS TRIO ARE JUST GOOD COMPANY Local trio Harbour Lights are releasing their first CD, Good Company, in early November.

The group, who are based in East Suffolk (Woodbridge, Rendlesham and Southwold) have performed for many local clubs and societies and at village concerts. They have also sung further afield at folk clubs and festivals such as Sidmouth and FolkEast. In October, they were the guests at Sharps, a folk club held at the headquarters of the English Folk Dance and Song near Regents Park.

The trio all sing and play a range of instruments such as concertinas, guitar, cello, banjo and melodeon. They sing an entertaining mix of East Anglian traditional songs, music hall and a few more recent gems. The band was formed in 2016, after playing together at monthly Thursday sessions at The Harbour Inn, an Adnams pub in Southwold.

The CD launch will be held at this venue.

The CD features many songs sung by the well-known local character and retired gamekeeper, Alvar Smith. His broad Suffolk accented songs are a joy to hear. He is joined by Derek Simpson and Rob Neal and together they have recorded some true Suffolk entertainment. Good Company indeed!

OUT & ABOUT / SCHOOLS WOODBRIDGE FLOWER CLUB We were delighted to welcome back Jacqui Aldous as our demonstrator for the September meeting. Her first arrangement was designed to depict an outdoor concert and for this she used a large wicker teapot as the container. Jacqui used a variety of vegetation at the base and added bay, rosemary and lavender for aroma.

To this were added pink carnations and miniature chrysanthemums. Finally poppy heads were added for texture.

Jaqui kept us entertained throughout, talking about the various concerts and numerous shows she had visited. Her next arrangement was a more contemporary design called Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Jacqui used fatsia leaves at the base and then added white roses in a spiral around central sticks along with deep mauve canna lilies.

Jaqui had recently seen a production Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and it inspired the next arrangement formed in the shape of a large headdress to replicate those which some of the stage characters had worn. She used orange coloured gerberas, carnations and green chrysanthemums.

Jacqui was thanked for such an enjoyable and entertaining afternoon and her arrangements were then used as prizes for our raffle.

RED, WHITE AND BLUE DAY AT ST MARY’S PRIMARY SCHOOL By school reporters Henry and Scarlett

On October 5, St Mary’s Primary School held a Red, White and Blue Day. The purpose of this day was to raise money for service families; the children raised about £200. The school has been participating in a range of activities to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War and joining the national Red, White and Blue Day allowed the children to think about all those who are still serving and protecting us today.

The day began with all the children gathering in the hall dressed in red, white and blue. Wartime songs were sung and a series of dramas were performed telling stories form the First World War. It was brilliant!

Finally, the competition winners were announced; they were Rosemary Digby, Pauline Double and Louise Fortescue. Congratulations to them all.

FARLINGAYE HIGH SCHOOL RECEIVES RHS SCHOOLS 5 STARS AWARD Farlingaye High School is planning how to spend the £200 National Garden voucher that it received as part of the RHS Schools 5 Stars Award. Their gardening club is a whole school effort and they have transformed some areas of the school. The old unused greenhouse has been repaired and is now used to grow plants from seed, store gardening equipment and pot on plants.

Each class then worked with members of 36 Engineer Regiment, 61 Field Support Squadron (based at Rock Barracks) who demonstrated the kit that soldiers use today. It included body armour, ration packs and weapons. The children found it very exciting.

Grandparents have been encouraged to come into school and share their knowledge from allotments and gardens. Swann Nursery and Ufford Crown Nursery have given their support and done a site walk and talked through how to get more gardening and horticulture into the curriculum. The science department have helped test the soils for pH levels.

The day concluded with a street party and a delicious picnic.

The school has built a relationship with the local allotment scheme, with the allotment holders donating plants and cuttings to the school site.

At lunchtime, the army PT instructor put the children through their paces with army training drills. Of course, they were easier than they were on real soldiers and played lots of fun games!

We asked pupils if they enjoyed the day. Scarlet said: “Yes I love Red, White and Blue Day because you get to remember those in the war who risked their own lives for us.” Jemima said that she loved Red White and Blue Day because it reminded her of the family born before her and gave her a really happy feeling.

The children will remember this special day for a long time.

The students are particularly proud of several achievements from the gardening scheme.

• They have raised money for a memorial bench for two sisters who died from cystic fibrosis. They are planting the area in the girls’ favourite colours.

• They planted potatoes earlier in the year which they managed to harvest in July.

• Year 7 held a sunflower competition to grow the tallest specimen.

It became very competitive with different mixtures of food and water being used to boost growth.

• The front of school has been improved with new planting and raised beds.

• They planted herbs outside the Food Technology area to be used in lessons.

Gardening in the school has benefitted all the students, including boosting the SEN students’ confidence, giving science students plants to study and improving the relationships between year groups.

SPORT MELTON BOWLS CLUB Darrell Howard (pictured) was the star performer at Melton Bowls Club Competition finals, becoming the club’s Two and Four Bowl Singles Champion and he will now represent the club in next year’s county and National Champion of Champions competitions. Howard also won the Robert Daines Singles trophy for the third year in a row.

The Men’s Club Championship produced an exciting encounter with Darrell Howard finally getting the better of Derrick Sharp. There was little between the two players in the early stages, with Sharp just having the edge. Three times Sharp pulled away, only for Howard to come back and level the scores.

After 28 ends had been played the players were tied at 18 shots each and Howard finally broke the deadlock and took the next two ends running out the winner 21-18. He dominated the Men’s Four Bowl (BE) Singles final winning 21-10 against past champion Eric Titshall.

The Ladies Four Bowl (BE) Singles was similar to the Men’s Four Bowl (BE) Singles final with Rosemary Manning an easy 21-6 winner over Eve Saunders.

Saunders reversed the situation in the Ladies Four Bowl (BE) Singles final winning convincingly 21-11 against an out of form Jean Moss.

The Handicap Singles final was won by Brian Holt who had little trouble beating Ken Frost 21-12.

The Robert Daines Singles final between Darrell Howard and Eric Titshall looked like it was going to be a repeat of Men’s Four Bowl (BE) Singles final with Howard establishing an 18-11 lead. But on this occasion Titshall staged a comeback taking the next six ends without reply to lead 19-18. Howard playing his third game of the day found just enough to get the three shots he needed to win 21-19.

In the Mixed Pairs final, Dave Austin and Rosemary Bennett just managed to beat Dave Lennard and Gill Bromley by 17-14 in a very close contest. Dave Austin also won the Drawn Pairs, this time his partner was Leon Politowicz.

In the closest contest of the day they defeated Tony Crawford and Avril Broyd on an extra end by 19-18.

The Triples final was also close with the game at 15 all going into the last end.

It was Derrick Sharp, Robin Prior and Avril Broyd who prevailed defeating Dave Austin, Bob Wright and Rebecca Vyse by 17-15.

WOODBRIDGE CRUISING CLUB The party’s over and it’s time to call it a day – until next spring at least. The glorious summer weather continued into early autumn and allowed the last two cruises to be completed virtually as planned. Early closing of the lock gates at Walton Pond caused a minor panic on board Finesse, but the lock keeper was roused from his reveries while there was still enough water to get in and all was well. A gale warning delayed the start of the Three Waters Cruise by a day and the leg up the Stour had to be abandoned, but a talented seal raised spirits by doing an impersonation of a dolphin, diving clean out of the water. The rest of the cruise enjoyed good weather and the annual cruise dinner on the final night marked the end of the season.

So the pretty balloons are burst and the piper has been paid. The clocks have been changed and darkness descended, boats have been lifted from the water and carefully laid in their winter cradles to await annual maintenance and the springtime ritual of antifouling.

But now the winter fun-times will roll with the first of the fortnightly Wednesday night suppers and the Thursday walks. To celebrate 100 years since the end of the First World War, there’s a nostalgia night with food and entertainment of the period. There’s the Laying-up Supper, Sunday morning talks, a fish supper to raise funds for the RNLI, a film night, a plant sale and the

working parties are starting again to maintain the clubhouse and grounds.

And all this before the end of November!

There’s also the AGM when in the absence of a military coup, Freeman Lynn will be re-elected for his second year as Commodore of the club. Sally Pearce is retiring after a 10-year stint as secretary and there are some vacancies in the ranks ‘below deck’. There are also a number of cups and shields to be awarded so it could be a night to rival Bake Off. Now I have to report with some sadness that we did not win the Quality of Place competition, but we’re not disheartened and if the maintenance crew can repaint the gnomes in time perhaps we’ll do better on the next occasion.

Of course, our primary purpose is to foster and enjoy cruising and it has been encouraging that several newer members have joined the cruising fleet this year and hopefully this will be repeated in 2019. If you are interested in cruising in company and perhaps extending your cruising area, you would be most welcome to visit the club and have a look round. Over 90 teams from 10 clubs across East Anglia attended the tenth Woodbridge Rugby Club U7-U12 Rugby Festival on Sunday, October 7. Now a regular fixture for local junior teams, Woodbridge Rugby Club, home of the Woodbridge Warriors and Amazons senior men’s and women’s teams, made maximum use of its Bromeswell pitches as games continued from 10.30am until 3.30pm.

Ideal rugby weather, cool and dry, helped those attending enjoy a full programme of matches, a BBQ and fresh pizza. Generously sponsored

by Woodbridge School, youth squads from as young as six came from Chelmsford, Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich YM, Southwold, Ipswich, Colchester, Hadleigh, Mersea, Felixstowe and Woodbridge to play under the RFU’s Age Grade Regulations.
