A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I’m having guitar lessons at the moment. In fact it’s a family guitar lesson, though Jack seems to chit-chat most of the time which is more than a little annoying. I’m not naturally ‘musical’ and have no immediate plans to join a band, but decided to do this to give my brain a bit of a work-out. It’s proving to be a challenge. I spend so long trying to recall each chord I doubt if I’ll ever produce anything which resembles music, but it has been interesting to explore my mental back catalogue to find pieces I want to play (eventually).

Different types of music and different artists have accompanied me through various stages in my life. Johnny Cash was my first love, then Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, U2, The Stunning, The Pale, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Snow Patrol, Regina Spektor, Nick Cave, Ed Sheeran… and always Johnny Cash.

NEWS STOWMARKET MEADLANDS MEN’S SHED Stowmarket Meadlands Men’s Shed opened it’s doors on Saturday, April 8 to welcome over 70 people into their workshop. People came to visit the proud team and saw photos of the progress since the self-build of the workshop began in January.

They were lucky to have visitors from Australia, who explained how the concept had grown there and how successful it was.

Refreshments were served and a raffle held. The team were extremely pleased with the numbers of interested visitors.

The team of ‘Shedders’ hope the workshop will be fully functional next month and are still looking for more people to join the enthusiastic team.

One song I go back to again and again is U2’s Stuck in a Moment. The following words have helped me through some difficult times: “And if the night runs over, And if the day won’t last, And if your way should falter, Along this stony pass, It’s just a moment, This time will pass”

We welcome men and women to the workshop to make projects from wood, for themselves or for the community, but the main aim of the shed is to encourage people to meet others. Members may just wish to come along for a cup of tea and a talk with other members. We have been approached by other groups in the community asking for our help with their repairs.

Another which reduces me to tears every time I play it, and I play it a lot, is Johnny Cash’s version of Hurt. His video is regarded as one of the saddest every produced, but on their own the opening lyrics are, in my opinion, the most powerful description of loneliness I’ve ever encountered: “I hurt myself today, To see if I still feel, I focus on the pain, The only thing that’s real” Right now these lyrics make me sad for those who are alone with little or no prospect of human contact. The days may be longer and most of us are getting out and about, but not everyone. Spare a thought for those who are isolated though illness or age and consider what you might do to provide a distraction. In Save Myself, Ed Sheeran sings “...human beings are destined to radiate or drain…” Let’s try to radiate more than drain – and I promise to never, ever, ever play guitar in public.

stowmarket carnival 2017 I would like to start this month by thanking everyone who supported our fun day on April 1. The weather was in our favour and we raised nearly £500. Thanks also to Deputy Mayor Dave Muller for his help selecting the Carnival Court and the Meadlands Social Club for hosting the event.

NEWS CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 2017: MAY 14-20

NEW BUSINESSES IN STOWMARKET

Christian Aid Week began 60 years ago to support the charity’s work with refugees in Europe following the Second World War and in this 60th anniversary year, it is focusing on its continuing work with refugees, which is needed now more than ever.

Stowmarket has a rich history of being a market town, and our Thursday and Saturday markets continue to grow in popularity. Over the past few years we have seen a tremendous growth in the number of independent shops opening in the town centre, bringing vibrancy and diversity to our town.

In a break from tradition, the local churches which are part of Churches Together in Stowmarket will be holding a street collection on Thursday, May 17 and a supermarket collection at Tesco on Friday, May 18 instead of collecting house-to-house. Individual churches will also have envelope collections to enable church members to make donations that can be gift-aided where appropriate.

Many member churches are also holding extra events to support the work of Christian Aid during the week.

If you see a volunteer collecting for Christian Aid, please give generously to help relieve suffering and build a world where everyone has a safe place to call home.

When Keith Riches from Stowupland joined Muntons on 3 April 1967 as a Quality Control Laboratory Analyst, few, including Keith himself, would have anticipated that he would stay with the company for 50 years, a rare occurrence in this day and age.

Stowmarket town centre is growing and independent shop owners are working hard to rebuild our local high street while offering excellent diverse products and services. Stowmarket Town Council is keen to encourage local people to shop locally supporting local businesses and employment.

STOWMARKET ASD SATURDAY CLUB

Back in April 1967, Engelbert Humperdinck was topping the charts with Release Me. It was still two years before man walked on the moon and the Concorde made its maiden flight. Keith’s starting salary was £4 10/per week (that’s £4.50 in today’s money), but then a Mars bar was less than 3p and the average cost of a house was less than £3,000.

During the course of his career Keith progressed to his current position as QC Laboratory Team Leader in Muntons busy laboratory, where thousands of samples are tested each year, vital in ensuring that raw materials purchased and products sold meet exacting specifications.

Upon reaching his 50-year service milestone Keith commented: “People say that this is a real achievement but to me there was just no reason to leave. The time has flown past, particularly the last couple of years, and whilst I am looking forward to retirement I will miss the job.” He continued: “One thing I won’t miss is the bicycle journey to work and back every day – particularly when it’s pouring down.”

Nigel Davies, Manufacturing and Sustainability Director, said: “Keith’s achievement is remarkable. He has amassed a wealth of knowledge and experience that he has been able to use to guide our analytical performance to a high level. His cycling to work is well known and in my estimation Keith has in his 50 years ridden the equivalent of around four times around the world just coming to and from work! We wish him a very long, happy and enjoyable retirement.”

After winning a Facebook poll in February with two other local charities, the club is now a Buildbase Stowmarket fundraising partner for 2017.

Buildbase Stowmarket was awarded Charity Fundraising Campion of the Year in 2016 for supporting local charities so this is a fantastic opportunity for the club and will be working closely with Buildbase staff, customers and suppliers to raise much needed funds. An initial meeting with Ian Bell, manager of Buildbase Stowmarket, to discuss future fundraising events has given the club a much needed positive boost for the coming year.

NEWS GREAT BLAKENHAM WEDDING FESTIVAL STOWMARKET WARDS – MAY 2017 Wedding fairs are usually held in grand country homes or large hotels.

We are bucking the trend and holding a church-based wedding fair. We want couples to have their dream church wedding, so we are teaming up with local businesses to run our very own wedding festival.

Over the weekend of May 27-29, from 10am-4pm daily, St Mary’s Church, Great Blakenham, will play host to one of the very first and only churchbased wedding fairs. The unique event will be held in the church, the Chequers Free House and Church Hall opposite.

Join us for presecco and canopies at our preview evening at 7pm on Friday 26 with Bishop Mike (tickets are £5). On Saturday 27 and Sunday 28, the church will be open to view show-stopping flower arrangements from various local companies and flower arrangers, beautiful wedding dresses throughout the ages, as well as dresses for sale. Hear wedding music on the organ, and chat to local vicars who can advise you on matters about your special day, and can also support you as you begin married life together.

At 4pm on Sunday 28, there will be a Renewal of Vows Service which will also enable unmarried couples to experience a church wedding, and there will be plenty of favourite wedding songs to sing.

Usually the end of term (council that is) report is being sent out about now but due to the county council elections the report is delayed until afterwards. In the meantime, here is a taster of some of the highlights Environment Recycling is up with 20 tonnes of glass per month being collected and recycled and there has been an increase of 6.5% in the number of businesses using our waste services.

Green Energy income has gone up with £460,000 of income generated this year by solar panels installed by our Solar PV project, up by almost 70% on last year. The project has now reduced CO2 emissions by 3.7 million tonnes since June 2014. Additionally, tenants have received over £495k in free electricity since the scheme commenced.

Housing Increase in new council homes: 65 new council homes are being built across the districts, with 14 already in the hands of their new occupants.

The remaining 41 will be completed this year. All these will be for rent and all will be let at affordable rent levels and will provide additional income for the council. £430,000 has been secured from DCLG to support community-led, privately built housing projects to kick start the delivery of affordable homes for purchase.

The number of empty homes is down with 97 properties having been brought back into use. This has benefited the families now living in them and generated £130,000 of income to the local economy this year.

Avoidable evictions are also down. The Financial Inclusion Project has taken over 150 referrals, helping tenants claim £33,106 more in benefits they are entitled to and averted 13 evictions. These referrals come from all sources asking for assistance for tenants in financial difficulty.

As a result, the councils have managed to obtain more in benefits and reduced the chances of tenants being evicted because of arrears.

Economy Opportunities for businesses are up: enterprise parks are being established at Stowmarket and Sproughton which could attract up to 293 new businesses and 2,400 new jobs.

Communities Communities have been empowered to bring forward neighbourhood plans across the districts with the first three now adopted in Lavenham, East Bergholt and Mendlesham. Fourteen further communities have started the formal process.

The councils have provided over £725,000 in grants to community groups, comprising £492,184 in revenue funding and £233,526 capital funding.

The capital funding represented 12% of over £2million total project costs.

THE CHANGING TIDES OF TIME Whether we like it or not or for better or worse things do change over time.

I have worked in private practice for over 10 years now, and have been reflecting on what has changed in the profession of physiotherapy over the last decade. Thankfully science and technology has advanced so much and provided us with better equipment, knowledge of how things get broken, heal and different ways to get people better.

To help stimulate healing as physiotherapists, we now have radial pressure (shockwave) machines. These are fabulous for those with tendon issues and sole of foot tissue pain. They are the first new type of electrotherapy machines the profession has had for over 30 years. Research into their beneficial effects has grown and grown. The ability of these machines to help patients get better has eclipsed the old ultrasound machines physiotherapists used. Ultrasound is a low intensity sound wave, whilst the radial pressure wave machines produce a high intensity acoustic shock wave which penetrates deep into the body and jiggles up tissues and gives more energy to them to heal quicker.

The other electrotherapy machines that have changed beyond all recognition are the muscle stimulator machines. They used to be big bulky boxes with lots of dials and switches. They were too expensive, not portable enough and certainly too complex to teach a patient quickly how to use them.

Thankfully now there are several companies who make easy to use machines which although still expensive are at a price point where physiotherapists can loan them out so that patients can use them at home or at work to stimulate healing through the day. They can be used to help strengthen muscles or help muscles relax if it’s got tight and painful.

Moving away from technology, science has given us much more research in terms of what’s best to help people return from an injury or get back to physical activity. Research has given us normative numbers to aim to get patients back to such as how flexible joints should be, how strong we need to get your muscles before letting you back to full activity and even tools and tips for making sure that you don’t go over the top when you start to return to work or sport.

Easy tools to track your progress through the treatment process has been really helpful for clinicians to advise on how you are improving but of more advantage are the targets it can give to patients and the knowledge of where you are along the road to recovery.

CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE MID SUFFOLK LINK As I write this I am preparing to go to Belarus to meet with the 18 children who will be coming to us in July.

This is our tenth year in Mid Suffolk and it is amazing how time has flown by. We have brought over 200 children to this area and many of them still keep in touch. I have been thinking recently how this all started for us.

In 2007 my husband and I hosted a child for the very first time and this began our journey with the charity. We have always stayed in touch with Nastia and recently I asked her to write a few words about her experience with the charity. The excerpt below shows just how much these visits mean to the children, far more than I think any of us realise. Thank you so much for helping us to achieve this.

“My name is Nastia. I first came to England when I was 7. Someone could not go so there was a spare space on the program and my mum and dad had to say if I could go or not. They said yes. I was very excited about going there but also a bit frightened. I’m 18 years old now and still remember my first visit. I spent wonderful and unforgettable time in England seeing things I had not even dreamed of. Since that moment even though I was a child my life has changed completely. After my first meeting my hosts become a true family for me as for my parents and sister. For the past 11 years they did a lot for our family. My hosts brought me and my sister to England many times.”

“Coming to England has always been so inspiring and exciting for me.

I met a lot of people who not only became friends but gave me an aspiration to learn English and also made me a confident person. England gave me a good knowledge of English, which gave me an opportunity to enter a lyceum and finish it with good results and later on enter the best university in Belarus. I’m so grateful that I had an opportunity to see a world and find an inspiration for my new achievements. I think many of us don’t go the next step because they don’t know what to do yet. We don’t have enough confidence to pursue our dreams.”

“And that’s why I want to say thank you that you helped me to build my self-esteem and also helped me find myself. I know that everything is possible and my biggest achievements are yet to come. I’m happy that more and more people join CCLL program to give this amazing time to children from my country. Believe me, this time they won’t forget as long as they live. CCLL you are a wonderful people with big hearts. You’re such a great example to others. The world would be better if more people were like you!”

NEWS ANNUAL REPORT 2016/2017 BY KEITH WELHAM, MSDC COUNCILLOR FOR STOWUPLAND WARD The last 12 months has been a period of change within Mid Suffolk, in Europe and in America. Who would have predicted Brexit and Trump? Like it or not, Brexit and decisions being made by the Trump administration will affect us all for many years to come. Decisions made locally are having and will continue to have more direct impact upon residents of Mid Suffolk.

Devolution of power from Westminster to a combined Suffolk and Norfolk Authority was very much on the cards, but some Norfolk councils found the terms of the offer unacceptable and, with no compromise possible, the offer was withdrawn.

Nick Gowlrey became Leader of the Conservative administration at Mid Suffolk in May 2016. Charlie Adan resigned as Chief Executive of Mid Suffolk and Babergh Councils and has been replaced by Arthur Charvonia.

Staff of the two councils will be moving to Endeavour House in Ipswich around September 2017 where they will take over part of Suffolk County Council’s headquarters building. The Needham Market offices will be closed and a ‘call in centre’ will open in Ipswich Street, Stowmarket. A complete overhaul of IT and telephone systems will be complete in time for the move. The promise is of a clear website that is simple to use for people to do a range of transactions on-line, such as pay council tax, claim benefits or order a brown bin. A single phone number will reach the council with callers then directed to the correct team.

A fundamental change to the way MSDC makes decisions will come in from May 2017 with the setting up of a cabinet system of governance.

Instead of key decisions being debated in Executive Committee meetings where representatives of all political parties are permitted to take part in a public debate, decisions will be made by cabinet or even by a single cabinet member.

In Stowupland, the deeply felt disappointment at the decision by the planning inspector to allow 175 houses to be built on land owned by the Carter and Bloom families has been followed by four further applications for housing developments. No decisions have been taken on any of these yet and I have asked that, rather than they be dealt with piecemeal, they be considered by the planning referrals committee at one meeting following a visit to Stowupland. I understand Bloor Homes have purchased the Carter/Bloom land and are preparing plans for submission to the planning offices for consideration of details of the development.

There has been a review of sheltered housing as homes in some schemes were hard to let. In Mid Suffolk there are 391 sheltered properties in 23 schemes. One hundred and forty-five out of 675 residents across Babergh and Mid Suffolk have signed a waiver saying they do not want or need a visit. Fifteen schemes across Mid Suffolk and Babergh will be de-sheltered, including the bungalows at Jubilee Court. However, no

tenants will be required to move if they do not wish to do so and those who wish to continue to receive support or an emergency alarm, will do so.

Fourteen new council homes are now completed and in the hands of the occupiers and 23 houses have been purchased in Mid Suffolk to help address the loss of council homes through the right to buy scheme. The income gained from the Solar PV panels installed on council properties is up 70% on last year and the project has reduced CO2 emissions by 3.7 million tonnes since 2014.

Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Councils plan to borrow £50m at low interest rate then use an incorporated structure to invest in commercial property. A motion by the Green party that 50% of this investment by Mid Suffolk District Council should be in the district was rejected as too risky.

An enterprise park has been established in Stowmarket which could attract several new businesses and up to 1000 new jobs. A number of initiatives are making good progress to encourage businesses in the area – Open for Business and Food Enterprise Zones as well as projects encouraging schools and businesses to work together to engage young people.

The council has set a balanced budget for the next year and there is to be a 1.6% increase in council tax (5p per week for a Band D property).

Over £300,000 in grants has been awarded to community groups across the district and represents about 12% of the total cost of the projects involved.

Twenty tonnes of glass is being collected for recycling each month in Mid Suffolk and there is a 6.5% increase in the business waste service.

A review of the wards across Mid Suffolk District Council is being carried out by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England. This has been triggered by so-called ‘electoral inequality’ – in this case because 11 out of the 30 wards have a variance (in electors) of over 10%. (The ward of North Stowmarket has increased in size by more than 30% since the last review in 2001). The review determines total number of councillors, number of wards, boundaries of each ward, number of councillors in each ward and the name of each ward. There will be public consultation on the proposals later in 2017.

I am a member of Development Control Committee B. I am also a member of the Countryside and Public Realm Services Review Panel and the panel developing a new leisure facilities strategy for Mid Suffolk.

From conversations we have overheard many people are confused with the name of our market. According to Wikipedia an ‘artisan’ is a skilled craft worker who makes or creates things by hand that may be functional or strictly decorative, for example furniture, decorative arts, sculptures, clothing, jewellery, food and household items. More recently the name has become synonymous with breads and cheeses; we would more than welcome any bread or cheese makers to join us along with any photographers, potters, glass makers, gardeners, bird box makers…

OUT & ABOUT SNAPSHOT: THE MUSEUM AT 50 The Museum of East Anglian Life is marking the 50th anniversary of the museum with a special exhibition which captures an intimate portrait of the museum as it is in 2017.

Snapshot: the Museum at 50 is a photographic exhibition which tells the stories of over 100 people who currently volunteer and work at the museum. It gives a behind-the-scenes picture of how a 75-acre estate with 20 historic buildings and 40,000 objects is run, from animal care to steam engine maintenance, from fine art to planting a Victorian garden.

“The museum is like a village,” says museum director Jenny Cousins.

“There are people from all kind of backgrounds who generously give their time to make the museum the special place it is. Visitors will be surprised at the stories some of them have.

“We have a team of former nurses, police officers, agricultural workers and teachers, the sons and daughters of factory workers, publicans and bakers. All the elements that make up a community make our community and we can share that through this very special exhibition.

“Our oldest member of staff, Gerry the museum assistant, celebrates his 90th birthday this year. One of our youngest, Abi, who volunteers in the print workshop, has been coming to the museum since she was three years old.”

Snapshot will be on display in Abbot’s Hall for the 2017 season, and will then go into archives for posterity.

Museum curator Lisa Harris says: “The museum was founded by volunteers and it is appropriate that we are celebrating volunteering as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations.”

As an independent charity, founded by volunteers, this exhibition is the perfect celebration of an organisation that has people at its heart. To running programmes for unemployed people, mental health service users and supported volunteers, the museum has been working with, and for, the local community for the past 50 years.

Forthcoming events The local community are encouraged to get involved with the museum’s 50th birthday party on Sunday, July 23, with a bake-off challenge, fancy dress competitions and behind-the-scenes tours in an event which will evoke the fetes that were traditionally held at Abbot’s Hall before it became the museum.

MEET FIVE MEMBERS OF THE VOLUNTEER TEAM Chrissie Chrissie grew up in London and moved to Suffolk as a teenager when her parents became publicans and took on The Fox and Hounds in Thurston. “It was a big culture shock. I could barely understand anything anybody said!

around there, many more than now.” Chrissie came to the museum on a course from the Job Centre: “I loved it so much I stayed.” She studied Fine Art, specialising in painting, and now does all the beautiful blackboard signs around town advertising the museum’s events.

Maria Maria grew up in a village in Bulgaria and translated novels from English to Bulgarian before coming to the UK a year ago and working in TK Maxx. She volunteers at the museum in visitor services and collections. “I see many things which I remember from my childhood.

Even though they are slightly different, they work the same way and look very similar and I can relate to them directly.” However, her favourite object is the Ixworth fire engine: “I like the painting on the front and funnily enough it reminds me of my grandmother and her chest for her clothes.”

Philippa Philippa went to university in Bristol and then joined the Merchant Navy as a marine engineer.

When she came back to Suffolk several years later, she found herself at a loose end and felt it would be a nice thing to do. She stays because of the company: “As with anything like volunteering, it’s not really so much about what you’re doing, it’s about the people you’re hanging out with.” When she’s not volunteering here, she leads the volunteer team at the Long Shop Museum in Leiston.

Roger Roger has been involved with the museum for over 20 years. After a career which included working in radar and navigation for the Royal Navy, and a role as housemaster at a boys’ school, Roger wanted to remain active in retirement and do something which had wider benefit. He came to the museum and created the bee garden: “This was virtually a rubbish dump when we started, an area of nothing, and where we are now in the shed was the actual dump.

So we started it up at that time and I’ve sort of kept it going.”

Brian Brian worked for 24 years at Sizewell A power station after landing his dream job running the reactors, and was the senior man by the time he retired. Brian became interested in the Walsh and Clark engines when he visited and saw one being repaired. He was captivated. Brian’s love of old machinery means he would really like to see the Burrell ploughing engines at work, but he knows it’s a big job.

bRAVO! Theatre Workshops have had a fantastic start to the year. We wanted to celebrate our fifth anniversary in a special way so we decided to audition for a show at Disneyland Paris. They loved our performance and the feedback was amazing; they loved our energy and expression and could see that we had made a great effort. As a result, 107 of us, including supporters, will be travelling to Paris on August 5 to perform in a Disney theatre. We are so excited! It’s a huge achievement and we are so proud of everyone involved.

Also coming up we have two shows, both at Needham Market Community Centre. First our version of The Addams Family performed by our three senior classes on April 22 and on May 13 our version of the musical HONK, performed by our younger classes. On June 10 and 24 we have two shows at The Ipswich Regent Theatre where we will be joining many other local dancing and singing schools and groups. It’s another busy year for us and there will be more to come.

OUT & ABOUT CELEBRATING 125 YEARS OF BOYS BRIGADE IN STOWMARKET

STOWMARKET CHORALE

This year (School Year 2016/17) marks the 125th session of 1st Mid Suffolk (Stowmarket) Boys Brigade Company which was originally founded in 1891 with the Girls Association being added in 2010. The company is affiliated to Stowmarket United Reformed Church (URC) with meetings taking place in the Boys Brigade Hall in Combs Lane since 1912.

Many people have great memories of their time with Boys Brigade, particularly the summer camps, parades with the band and a whole range of other adventures along the way. Today the tradition is continued through an exciting program of weekly activities, camping and expeditions for the current membership of almost 50 boys and girls aged five to 17 years.

The Stowmarket Boys Brigade Band is also celebrating 25 years since reforming as the Stowmarket Boys Brigade Centenary Band in 1991. They have been a regular feature in the town carnival, key town events such as Remembrance Day and mayoral civic parades and a number of summer fetes across Suffolk. The band is currently recruiting new members and offers full training if required.

To celebrate these milestones a new company colour has been commissioned and was dedicated and presented at a special parade service on Sunday, March 12. Current Captain, Martin Gray, said: “It is a privilege to be a part of the continuing story of Boys Brigade in Stowmarket. I am excited to be able to celebrate 125 years with the dedication of a new Colour and would like to pay tribute to everyone who has contributed to making a difference in the lives of young people over that time.”

The Sailors’ Hornpipe, Drunken Sailor and Greensleeves were just three of the songs that recently raised the roof at Stowmarket United Reformed Church.

Directed by Leslie Olive, Stowmarket Chorale opened with Edward Elgar’s Sea Pictures, an evocative cycle of songs based on poems of the sea.

Sing for the Mary Rose by Alexander L’Estrange. The composer and his jazz quintet accompanied the singers on an adventure of sea shanties, folk songs and jazz telling the story of the Mary Rose, flagship of King Henry VIII. This project was a great success, immense fun and a testament that young and old can work and sing together. This year Ringshall Amateur Theatre Society celebrates 21 years treading the boards and rehearsals are in full swing for The Sound of Murder, a murder mystery playing at Ringshall Village Hall later this month.

The story is about a troop trying to put on The Sound of Music, but with a shortage of cast and members having to play several conflicting parts and no one knowing who the actual murderer is, there is plenty of intrigue and entertainment to be had.

The Sound of Murder is at Ringshall Village Hall at 7.30pm on Friday, May 19 and Saturday 20. With a light meal while trying to sort out who murdered who, an entertaining evening is promised. CHARITY MOTORBIKE RIDE – SATURDAY, MAY 20 Saturday, May 20 sees the fifth annual Stowmarket Salvation Army Charity Motorbike Ride. The ride will take riders through approximately 50 miles of beautiful Suffolk countryside before returning back to the Salvation Army for refreshments.

Riders are asked to meet at the car park from 10am where hot drinks and bacon sandwiches will be available and the ride will start at 11am. Our infamous BBQ food will be available when we return, back by popular demand to the original burgers.

LIQUIDATING A COMPANY In a previous article, I have written about how a limited company may be set up, and how things all begin in that regard. This month, however, I am looking at the other end of the spectrum – which is bringing a limited company to an end.

This is called liquidation.

There are three types of liquidation – a creditors’ voluntary liquidation, a compulsory liquidation, and a members’ voluntary liquidation. This article is about the first of these.

When a company is liquidated, this means that it will stop doing business And employing people. Once the company has been removed from the register of companies held at Companies House, it won’t exist at all. When a company is liquidated, its assets are used to pay off any debts – and then any money left over is paid to the shareholders. Where the debts exceed the money realised, then, of course, there won’t be any money to pay to the shareholders.

A director can propose that a company has stopped trading and be liquidated if the company can’t pay its debts – it is insolvent – and enough shareholders agree. The company must have a meeting to discuss the company’s debts with its creditors, and the liquidator. Seventy-five per cent – by value of shares – of the shareholders must agree to pass a winding up resolution.

There is then a set process to follow – which involves formally

appointing the liquidator, who will then take charge of liquidating the company.

In addition, the resolution must be registered at Companies House within 15 days, and an advertisement placed in The Gazette. The Gazette is the official public record of matters such as this, in addition to many other things.

Once this winding up resolution has been passed, a meeting must be held with all of the creditors of the company – who must be given at least seven days’ notice, and an advertisement placed in The Gazette. The creditors are then entitled to question the directors about the company’s failure – or even suggest an alternative liquidator. A statement of affairs must be presented at the meeting, giving details of the company’s situation and its assets. After the meeting, that statement is then given to the liquidator, who will send it to Companies House.

The other types of liquidation, I shall discuss in a later article.

Liza Jones was the speaker at our last meeting. Here subject was knickers!

It was a most entertaining talk with pictures and lots of garments. We learnt that ladies didn’t wear knickers until quite recently and were shown pictures and actual garments from the past. This caused lots of laughter. Shirley Cobbold thanked Liza for entertaining us.

The meeting then continued in our usual manner with dates confirmed for our mystery trip (April 12) and our jumble sale (April 1). The competition for the evening was for the most words made from ‘knickiers’ (deliberate spelling error). Linda Farr came first, Josie Horrex second and Liz Warren third. We also had a quiz given by Shirley Cobbold.

LIONS CLUB OF STOWMARKET & DISTRICT Memorial Charity Boxing Dinner, Friday, March 17 John Webb, long standing master of ceremonies for the annual Stowmarket Lions Boxing Dinner, opened proceedings at Debenham Leisure Centre on March 17 and then called for the sounding of 10 bells, a time-honoured tradition in boxing, and a minute’s applause in honour of Lion Ernie Pearce. More than 300 local businesspeople, supporters, sponsors, friends, relatives and Lions stood to applaud the great man.

Fellow Lions and close friends Stuart Jeffries and Andrew Ward picked up the gauntlet to organise this year’s charity boxing dinner after Ernie sadly died last year after some 25 years of organising this annual event which has raised over £250,000 for local and Lions charities.

Ernie’s daughter Rachel (pictured) represented her father and presented the overall boxer of the night trophy to Connor Daly from Islington Amateur Boxing Club.

Stowmarket Lion President Kevin Standrin presented trophies for the individual matches in an evening which is conservatively estimated to raise in excess of £8,000. The auction alone raised £650 from a range of sporting memorabilia.

OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET & DISTRICT PROBUS CLUB STOWMARKET & DISTRICT Our monthly gathering (first Tuesday of the month) of retired professional MONDAY CLUB and business persons in April included a talk by Oliver Miller from Bishop & Miller Auctioneers, based in Stowmarket. Oliver enlightened us on current trends in the antique world and also surprised us with how sometimes an item can surpass its valuation beyond expectations.

Members start to gather at 10.30am for tea/coffee and a chat with 4560 minute presentations starting at 11am. Every quarter, a luncheon is arranged for members and guests, together with a number of visits to places of interest in the UK.

The club has been well attended, particularly since the evenings are getting lighter.

The games night went very well with various board and card games being played. An indoor bowls session was very popular with lots of good natured rivalry.

STOWMARKET AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB We welcomed Mike Cowling to the club on February 13. Mike is a new judge to us, so we wondered what he would be like and if he would like our work. The answer to both of these questions was a resounding ‘yes’.

He gave good and timely feedback as well as tips to improve. Our meeting on February 27 was a club night and we watched the EAF portfolio CD. This is what we must aspire to, although not all images are to everyone’s taste.

On March 13 we welcomed another new judge, Mike Lloyd, and he did a very good job with his precise and helpful critique. On March 27 we welcomed Terry Ward with a talk titled Depth of Feeling. He was like a breath of fresh air and totally unlike any other speaker we have had. He managed to renew our photographic passion with some of his novel ideas.

Our AGM is on Monday, May 8. New members are always welcome. All you need is a camera – any camera – and a real interest in using it. Our members use DSLRs, mirrorless, compacts and bridge cameras.

Paul Readman, Vice-Dean (Research) of Kings College, London and a colleague will be screening films of historical pageants staged in Bury’s Abbey Gardens in 1907, 1955 and 1970 and will give a short, informative talk about them.

This is a great opportunity to see this rare footage of the pageants of 1907, 1959 and 1970. Indeed, you, family and friends may well have been to one of these pageants and talked about it.

MAKE FRIENDS AT RED GABLES

Stowmarket Royal British Legion is holding a Remembrance Service and reception on the evening of Friday, June 16 to mark the 35th anniversary of the Falklands War. The war came about when Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands on April 2 in a dispute of sovereignty with Britain. This set in train the mobilisation of a task force to the South Atlantic to re-take the islands, a journey of 8,000 miles for the task force made up of Royal Navy ships and sailors, Royal Marines, the Army and Royal Air Force, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and merchant ships taken up from trade.

Seventy-four days later, Argentine forces surrendered on the islands, bringing an end to a war that upheld the rights of the islanders to selfdetermination. In doing so, it saw 255 members of the task force and three Falkland Islanders being killed-in-action.

The Remembrance Service will be held at the Church of St Peter and St Mary’s, Stowmarket, starting at 6pm, followed by a short wreath laying at the town’s Memorial Gates before a reception at the RBL Club at 7.30pm where a buffet will be available.

FUNDRAISING SCREENING OF THE LONGEST DAY Fundraising screening of the 1962 epic war film about the D-Day landings on Thursday, June 8 at the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts, 7 for 7.30pm.

The film, which won two Oscars in 1963, features a large ensemble cast including John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Richard Burton, Sean Connery and Henry Fonda supported by thousands of extras, including many servicemen, and uses archive footage of actual events.

This spring the grounds and gardens of Red Gables have been wonderful and full of colour, and it’s all thanks to the Red Gables Garden Project and its members. The Red Gables Garden Project, which was started five years ago this April, supports adults with mental health and learning difficulties. Working in a sustainable garden, within a supported environment, our aim is to improve their skills, while developing their confidence, social skills and general well-being. We’re looking forward to the bluebells and tulips next.

There has been continuing work with the Arboretum Project. A yew screening hedge has been planted behind the wall at the front of Red Gables and more groundwork is being undertaken in preparation for the new plants and trees in the future.

Craft & Cake Club, a group that meets every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, is a great place to meet new people and socialise. STOWMARKET AND DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB Make flowers your hobby – come to Stowmarket and District Flower Club and enjoy watching talented demonstrators wow you with their expertise. We meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month at Woolpit Village Hall, except for two open meetings (one in the summer and one in the autumn) at Needham Market Community Centre which anyone is welcome to attend.

Meetings start at 7.30pm and always end with tea and coffee and biscuits. Membership for one year is £25, just over £2 a month. That’s less than a trip to the cinema. Our next meeting on Wednesday, April 26 is a demonstration by Melissa Sheldrake titled Thyme Machine.

Exciting news! Planning permission has been passed for the reinstatement of the timber frame at Orchard Barn. The Long House was first built in the 1580s. Last lived in during the 1930s, this important heritage building is to be rescued from the brambles and constructed ‘like for like’ using local trees, coppiced hazel and home-dug daub. Wherever possible original timbers will be repaired and re-used.

With over 2,000 students and volunteers involved so far, OBee Community Interest Company is looking forward to welcoming more people from the local and wider community to this unique living history project.

Orchard Barn has a unique link to Sir Thomas Gresham who in 1565 founded the Royal Stock Exchange in London. Sir Gresham owned some fine woodland in Battisford. He brought 200 carpenters to the area to convert his trees into the frame for the Stock Exchange. The remains of the sawpits can still be made out on Battisford Common. Of course he would have taken the best timber for the main project, but there would have been lesser grade timbers left over. We think they may have been used in the Orchard Barn Long House as its timbers are completely oversized.

STOWUPLAND LOCAL HISTORY GROUP Wednesday, May 3: Whistlecraft by Pip Wright Pip returns to tell us about the Whistlecraft family of Rickinghall, the local equivalent of Emmerdale’s Dingles! Joe Whistlecraft was a notorious poacher. Pip has recently brought out a book on the family and will have copies of this and his other books for sale on the night.

Wednesday, June 7: Five Generations in Stowupland by Kim Jennings. When Kim, an historian and former genealogist, moved to Stowupland in 2014, she knew that her mother had grown up on The Green but wasn’t aware of the other ancestors who had also made the village their home. Over the last two years Kim has been researching her family in Stowupland. She will share her findings, be keen to hear any memories of her family or of life in the village over the last century and to hear from others engaged in family history research. A very short AGM, starting at 7.30pm, will precede the talk.

We meet at 7.30pm in Stowupland Village Hall, IP14 4BQ. There is an ample car park, visitors are always welcome and refreshments are available. Admission is £1 for members, £3 for non-members.

COMINGS AND GOINGS AT COMBS FORD PRIMARY SCHOOL What a busy term we’ve had!

Our Reception children enjoyed a visit from Farmer Brian and his big green tractor as part of the Suffolk Agricultural Association Tractors in Schools programme. The children learned all about the work of the farmer and where the food on their plates comes from.

KS1 were very excited to welcome GB Paralympic Footballer Roy Turnham and his lovely guide dog, Pudsey. One of the newer members of the Football 5-a-side team, Roy made his Paralympic debut in London in 2012. Roy led a sponsored fitness circuit with Years 1 and 2 and followed up with a talk and question and answer session. The aim of the event was to help inspire the pupils to take up sport generally, but just as importantly to encourage them to discover and then pursue their passion in life.

In September the children chose a charity to support for the year. It was agreed that this year the charity would be the Stowmarket Saturday ASD Club which gives support, help and advice to local families of children with autism, including families at our school. We were very happy to present them with a cheque for £714. The money was raised through donations taken at Christmas school plays and non-uniform days.

On the last day of term the PTA organised an Easter Bake-Off. Children and teachers used all their imagination and skill to create masterpieces that Mary Berry herself would be proud of. There were prizes for the best decorated and tastiest Easter cakes and cupcakes and at the end of the day the cakes were sold in the playground.

Next term we will be organising our open mornings. These will be information visits and tours of the school for new pupils who will be starting school in 2018.

SCHOOLS / SPORT FRIDAY FUN Mini Music Makers is a weekly class which runs on Friday mornings during term time for babies and pre-school children.

We had a busy spring term singing songs about animals and colours and used our bean bags to help with co-ordination. On March 24 we raised £50 for Red Nose Day by having a cake bake and raffle and sang songs with the colour red in them. We have recently made some drums which we will be using during the summer term. At our end of term Easter party we said goodbye to four of our children and we wish them luck as they move on to pre-school.

STOWMARKET TOWN COUNCIL PRESENT CHEQUE TO STOWMARKET SWIMMING CLUB

Stowmarket held its in-house gala on Saturday, March 25, Mayor Barry Humphreys and his wife attended to present the club with a cheque for £500 towards the finance of the new automatic timing equipment. The in-house gala had more than 60 participants with many of the younger swimmers taking part in their first races and a large number of our swimmers achieving new personal best times. The club has a busy competition schedule for the next six months and is always looking for volunteers to assist with galas. Perhaps you might like to learn how to officiate at our galas.

Close to 100 juniors and seniors recently graded in universal karate and kickboxing with students passing their yellow belts right up to brown belts and black belt assessments and upgrades. Everyone was tested on their fitness, basic and advanced techniques, sparring, conditioning, self-defence and patterns/kata, and all kickboxers had to complete a timed distance run the week before their main exams. Since the Scorpion Academy started back in 1990 the syllabuses for universal karate, kickboxing and muay thai are constantly assessed and updated, therefore making sure that the very best is always obtained by those grading.

Grandmaster Mark JR Trent, 8th dan blackbelt, Scorpion head coach and UFKKWA president, travelled to Scunthorpe to grade eight students in tae kwon do. The top table consisted of four grandmasters plus several masters so to pass a black belt under such a high ranking panel is very special indeed. Mark is also vice president of the British Taekwondo Association which was set up in 1967 so we are celebrating our 50th anniversary. In May we are holding a training weekend and celebration party in Great Yarmouth with all BTA clubs across the UK attending.

The UFKKWA (Universal Freestyle Karate Kickboxing Worldwide Association) was established in 2004 and has steadily grown into a world recognised group with over 170 martial arts organisations in over 25 countries currently recognising us. The UFKKWA is free to join and is open to individuals, clubs, groups, associations and organisations worldwide, regardless of what style of martial arts is taught. The UFKKWA can and will recognise all grades, organise blackbelt exams, instructor training, tournaments, five star excellent club awards and help to promote news and events to our many worldwide members.

STOWMARKET STRIDERS

London Marathon is the grand finale for many members of Stowmarket Striders Running Club as they take on Britain’s biggest and most popular spring marathon in the nation’s capital this month. Following 18 months of training, 41 Stowmarket Striders are taking part in 12 key marathons this year from Boston, to Paris, Brighton to Edinburgh, The Marathon des Sables and everywhere in between.

More than 1,000 marathon race miles will be run on top of the estimated 25,000 training miles that the runners would have completed in preparation for their big challenge. This year eight athletes are attempting their first marathon, the oldest runner is 67, the youngest 27 and we have five athletes who are running at national Good for Age level. Individual club members are admirably fundraising for 12 local and national charities close to their hearts and include St Elizabeth Hospice, British Heat Foundation, Prostate Cancer UK, Alzheimer’s Society, Suffolk MIND, Pancreatic cancer UK, Parkinson’s UK, Alzheimer Research UK and The Brain Tumour Charity.

“We are really proud of all our club members who are taking on this iconic distance,” says club chairman Paul Heeks. “It’s a huge commitment to train for and both a mental and physical challenge to run 26.2 miles.

SPORT STOWMARKET BADMINTON CLUB Stowmarket Badminton Club is a friendly and thriving club which plays its club nights and matches at Mid Suffolk Sports Centre (MSLC) in Stowmarket. The adult section runs 10 teams in the Bury (BDBL) and Ipswich (IDBL) badminton leagues as well as running one of the biggest junior sections in Suffolk. Our adult teams have had a mixed season this year with notable successes in the IDBL for two of the men’s team with promotions for the men’s B (into Div 2) and C (into Div 6) teams. The ladies team finished second in Division 1 with the mixed teams finishing well placed in Divisions 1 and 2 respectively. All of the teams in the BDBL have managed to finish in the top half of their respective leagues. This season has seen notable additions to all of our teams with juniors from our own junior section which is always a bonus for the club.

Our juniors held their 11th annual tournament at MSLC on Sunday, April 2. Seventy-six junior players entered the pairs event, playing a total of 86 games in the various age groups. Players from Stowmarket, YMCA, Abbeygate and Bosmere Badminton Clubs took part in the tournament with the honours spread around the clubs. The winners were: Under 11: Leighton Gale and Isaac Chase from Abbeygate Runners-up: Ella Shirley and Eva Boggis from Abbeygate Under 13 Boys’ Doubles: Sam Rahmanpour and Matthew Wilson from YMCA. Runners-up: James Wing and Joel Redhead from Stowmarket

Runners-up: Alice Beamish and Rebecca Hendry from Stowmarket Under 17 Boys: Theo Broom and Matthew Cook from YMCA Runners-up: Chris Chapelle and Finlay Gamble from Stowmarket Under 17 Girls: Anna Keeble and Catherine Westland from YMCA Runners-up: Ellie Davis and Frankie Dean from Stowmarket Saturday, April 1 also saw the end of season in-house tournament at the club. All 40 juniors took part in the fun tournament in teams of three, earning medals for the best team before going home with an Easter egg for their efforts.

Winners on the day for the first group were Georgina Margetson, William Black and Leo Hunt with Thomas Alder, Findlay Gamble and Adam Turner winning the older age group. A big thank-you to all the coaches and helpers who have volunteered their time throughout the year to keep the junior section going.

The junior section has had several notable successes at county level this season with medals for Ben Bennett-Day and Craig Newcombe in the IDBL Boys U18 tournament as well as trophies for Robert Wing and Oliver Pearmain in the IDBL Boys U15 tournament. Success also came in the Abbeygate junior tournament held in January where the Stowmarket team came away with the overall title for the second year running.

Thanks to all the players and helpers on the day.

The 2016/17 season has proven to be another successful season for Stowmarket BC at all levels, so for all those ex, new to the area, retired or new to the sport players out there, feel free to contact us to ignite your enthusiasm for the game.

STOWMARKET TENNIS CLUB We’re steaming full-ahead into the summer season now with lots of exciting activity down on the courts. The winter dome has been stored for another six months and many thanks to all the members who gave their time over the Easter holiday to ensure this went well. All five of our courts are now exposed to the random nature of spring weather so we’ll be keeping everything crossed for some warm, dry conditions.

Easter Camp was a huge success with many new faces trying tennis for the very first time and several looking to get involved in our regular weekly coaching program. Some of the children came through the assemblies delivered recently and it was great to see so many excited new faces keen to get started.

The summer league matches will be arranged very soon and we’ve already held the men’s, ladies and mixed team practises. These sessions have also seen some new faces competing for a place in the teams which is an indication of how much new talent the club has attracted over the last 12 months. Long may it continue as Stowmarket Lawn Tennis Club has a long tradition of competing in the county leagues and we’re always looking to recruit new team players.

With the rise of the ‘high performance centre’, notably at Ipswich and Bury, we’ve often had to say goodbye to our best juniors so it’s always most gratifying when they return as adult members or even just drop in for a visit. Rather like Ipswich Town FC, Stowmarket has always produced more than its fair share of performance players only to see then hoveredup by the bigger clubs. Maybe I should start selling them instead!

STOWMARKET CRICKET CLUB YOUTH SEASON COMMENCES IN SUNSHINE Youth cricket has started at Stowmarket with more than 20 youngsters attending the first coaching evening on April 3 at Chilton Fields. CHURCH NEWS STOWMARKET URC The Rev Chris Wood, also made reference to a memorial table adorned with pictures of mothers of members who were no longer alive. This was the first year that such a tribute had been in place, adding to the memories of the occasion. It is hoped that a similar table will be placed in church on Father’s Day in June.

The large numbers of families who gathered at Stowmarket United Reformed Church on Mothering Sunday were each given a beautiful pot plant to take home as a symbol to remind them of God’s mother love, the theme of the service.

Members and friends of Stowmarket United Reformed Church recently enjoyed a murder mystery evening, using their skill of deduction to detect who committed the crime. Between acts a sausage supper was served and the evening concluded with a small prize being awarded to The Rev Chris Wood who correctly solved The Case of the Mickfield Mystery by Gwyn Guy. Nejebar’s Story Nejebar fled Afghanistan with her family after the Taliban threatened to kill her husband, Noor, who was a teacher. It wasn’t an idle threat – the Taliban first blinded, and then murdered, another member of their family.

“The last days and weeks in Afghanistan were the hardest,” says Noor.

“When I went to work, my heart was beating harder. I didn’t know if my family were going to be alive when I got back.”

When the family arrived at the refugee camp in Greece, they thought they would only stay for 10 days. But they’ve been there six months now and there’s no end in sight. The only protection they have against the wind and rain is their tent. There’s no school for their children. Five-yearold Sudai, their youngest, is ill, but Nejebar and Noor don’t know what’s wrong with him because they can’t communicate with the camp’s doctor, who is Greek.

Nejebar is the rock at the centre of her family, holding them together throughout all this uncertainty. She has even welcomed Faraidoon and Farzad into the family, two brothers who don’t know where their parents are, or if they’re even alive.

“We still have some hope for our children’s future,” says Nejebar. “We only want a peaceful life. We want our children to go to school. The most important thing is our children.”
