A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Mother Nature is having quite an impact on my life right now, mostly positive, but not entirely! I’m looking after grandma’s chickens for a few days while she’s away. It’s not difficult: put them in, let them out, give them some grain… job done. Except not this time! Last night one of them went missing and I found myself clucking around the garden for about an hour in torrential rain trying to find her. I can only image how ridiculous I looked but I most certainly wasn’t laughing. Of course I didn’t find her so spent a restless night wondering how to tell grandma that Blossom was done for.

When I went to let the others out this morning, there she was waiting for me in all her glory, perfectly dry, well-rested and seemingly happy. A bit too happy for my liking!

Meanwhile, back at home a mummy blackbird (I’ve called her Maralyn because she’s very beautiful) has taken up residence under the roof of our little outdoor lean-to, a place I like to sit with a book when the weather allows. She’s busily feeding four babies, constantly flying back and forth all day long. I must say I admire/envy her energy and it is a rather beautiful thing to see, but she’s making my garden a no-go area as every time I open the door she abandons her chicks and sits on the wall until I leave. I imagine she’s sitting there muttering “here she comes again… what is it this time… can’t she see I’m busy… what is she wearing?”. I end up feeling guilty for invading ‘her’ space so I retreat indoors and leave her to it. I haven’t even put the bins out this week because I’m afraid to scare her away. How would I cope with four baby blackbirds? Not very well I suspect.

I don’t suppose she and her babies will be there for very long and despite the inconvenience (and the mess, but let’s not go there right now) I’m glad we have given them a safe place to hatch. I do love living in the countryside.

Even those of us who live in Suffolk towns and villages are never far from a wide open space and a big sky view. We really are incredibly lucky and when better weather lands, as surely it must, I hope you have the opportunity and the means to get about to explore or simply admire our surroundings.

You may not have to go very far, unless your garden is out of bounds too!

NEW TECHNOLOGY TO RECORD END OF LIFE CHOICES If you have an incurable illness or care for someone who has an incurable illness or is suffering from fragility or dementia, then this article will be of interest to you.

Have you heard of the My Care Choices Register, or MCCR for short?

Developed and introduced by St Helena, the charity which helps local people face incurable illness and bereavement, the MCCR was first launched in September 2013.

Research had showed that people don’t want to spend their last year or their last days in hospital, but this was often the case due to poor co-ordination of care or crisis driven care. The introduction of the MCCR has alleviated some of these issues.

The patient is empowered to record their end of life choices. Questions such as: Who do you want to care for you when you are too poorly to manage it all yourself? Where would you like to be? What information do you want those caring for you to know? These are often subjects that are never discussed – they are the elephant in the room.

Did you know that if you want to die at home, you must have a DNACPR (do not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation) form in place? This information can be listed on the My Care Choices Register and all local health care professionals can view it.

Measles Outbreak and MMR Vaccination There has been a recent increase in outbreaks of measles and mumps which you may have heard about in the press. It’s important therefore that you and your child are vaccinated against these diseases and we would like to encourage our patients to have their vaccinations.

Measles, mumps and rubella are highly infectious conditions that can have serious, potentially fatal complications, including meningitis, swelling of the brain (encephalitis) and deafness. MMR is a safe and effective combined vaccine that protects against three separate illnesses – measles, mumps and rubella (German Measles) – in a single injection. The full course of MMR vaccination requires two doses and this is recommended for all unimmunised children AND adults.

PARISH CLERK SURGERIES Brantham Parish Clerk holds monthly ‘surgery’ sessions at Bake and Blossoms café so that parishioners and others can meet to ask questions, raise concerns or even just have a chat and a cake. This is the perfect opportunity for you to get to know your parish clerk and chat through all those local issues that have been bothering you! The dates of the next parish clerk surgeries are Tuesdays, July 2 and September 3 from 11am to 12.30pm.

CONSTABLE COUNTRY MEDICAL PRACTICE CQC Inspection The practice was inspected by the CQC on 24 April. The inspection team were at the practice for the whole day and interviewed staff and patients. They inspected both Capel and East Bergholt sites and rated the practice as ‘Good’ overall. We were rated ‘Requires Improvement’ for responsiveness, though this was partly based on patient satisfaction figures from over a year ago, and ‘Good’ for safe, effective, caring, and well-led areas. This is an improvement on last year’s rating and the CQC acknowledged the hard work by staff to improve the service we offer. We are delighted with our rating and hope our plans for further improving the service over the coming year will result in an even higher rating when we are next inspected.

Appointment System Update Further to last month’s announcement, I can confirm that the practice will be implementing a new appointment system on 2 September. The new system will be a call back system which has been successfully implemented at many practices across Suffolk. Our medical receptionists will continue to take details from patients and will determine how they can best help them. This may include booking an appointment with a practice nurse or HCA, directing to a pharmacist, booking a minor illness appointment with a nurse practitioner, or liaising with a doctor on the patient’s behalf.

Where a patient needs to talk to a doctor, they will be placed on the list of the doctor of their choice who will call them back within an agreed time slot.

They will discuss the patient’s problem with them and if necessary arrange for them to see them or another clinician the same day.

The system is an on-the-day only system. There will be no pre-bookable appointments. These will not be needed as patients will be able to speak to a doctor and see them the same day if necessary. The only exceptions to prebooking will be patients with medial conditions which require arrangements to be made for them to attend the practice.

We will be holding open days at East Bergholt and Capel on the afternoon of 18 July (venues TBC) where we will be able to explain the new system and answer any questions on either the appointment system or any other aspect of the practice. In the meantime, information leaflets will be available in waiting rooms and on our website which explain the new system. We want to ensure the new system will improve access when we introduce it and value your feedback to enable us to finalise the details.

NEWS REPORT TO PARISHES, BRANTHAM WARD Babergh District Councillor Alastair McCraw Babergh Council: The New Administration Last month I wrote about the election result giving us a council in No Overall Control. The newly elected council met for the annual meeting towards the end of May. By that time the majority of us had agreed that we would form a Joint Administration involving the Conservative, Independent and Liberal Democrat groups. I suppose it’s possible that one ‘side’ or the other could have formed an administration on their own, but working with a split right down the middle doesn’t seem to have gone too well elsewhere. Likewise, the involvement of the new Green and Labour members appeared to involve problems of crossing some ‘red lines’. Personally, I regret that. It’s been managed at Babergh in the past and it may be possible again at some time.

For now, 26 of the 32 councillors are fully involved, and the other groups will not be marginalised. This has all relied on the goodwill approach I’ve been arguing for since the election. We simply have too much to do, and right away, to waste time infighting.

LEADER & CABINET The previous leader, John Ward, continues (Leader & Finance) with Clive Arthey, the Independent Leader as his Deputy (also Planning). The other Cabinet positions see this even split continue. David Busby (LIB-DEM) covers Assets and Investments, Derek Davis (IND) Communities, and Lee Parker (IND) gets a newly named Customers, Digital Transformation & Improvement portfolio. Previous Cabinet member Jan Osborne (CON) continues to cover Housing. Elizabeth Malvisi and Michael Holt (CON) take the Environment & Economic Growth positions respectively.

With the same even split, the new chairman (that is her preference of term) is Kathryn Grandon (IND) with Adrian Osborne (CON) as deputy chairman.

And so on, with the committee chairs and vice chairs equally balanced.

I was re-elected as Chair of Overview and Scrutiny, along with the Vice Chair

Sue Ayres (CON). I’m personally very glad of this as there is a work approach there that we would both wish to see continued. Scrutiny remains essential to making good decisions openly.

Gearing Up Obviously, the last two months or so have involved everybody first deciding on these roles, getting used to them, training of new members and new responsibilities. By now the first committee meetings will have taken place.

These will have included the first Planning Committee meetings. At the time of writing it has only just been agreed that the Reserved Matters Application for the Land South of Brooklands Road will be heard on 19 June. The outline permission already having been granted, for up to 320 houses, this will be dealing with the details of 288 houses on the site. The original permission cannot be reversed. It was decided back in 2016, as you may remember.

I’ve arranged that members of the committee will have visited this site and two others in Brantham. Those are Brantham Place and Land south of Slough Road. By now those site visits will have taken place. Again, this has all happened since I last wrote. I’m pleased to say that Babergh are now webcasting all our committee and council meetings, of particular interest in Planning and Full Council. You can find them all with a simple search for Babergh District Council on YouTube and watch live or afterwards. I’ll try to keep you informed through the parish council and on the Facebook group.

OUT & ABOUT ESSEX AND SUFFOLK QUILTERS QUILT SHOW Quilters’ passion is to buy large pieces of beautiful fabric – to collect a stash.

Next they cut them up into small pieces of various shapes and sew them back together again. That’s the patchwork! Finally, they layer up the new piece of fabric in a sandwich with a backing and a wadding and stitch through in a decorative way – the quilting! Of course, traditionally, quilters would recycle pre-used fabrics and some still work that way – recycling!

Quilting and patchwork is very popular and there is much interest locally. This was evident in May when approximately 1,500 people visited the Big Quilt Show at Blackthorpe Barn. We’re not expecting such numbers at our quilt show on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 October at Ardleigh Village Hall, but our last one was very popular. We are Essex and Suffolk Quilters and we meet monthly to listen to talks from experts and to organise workshops to extend our skills. Our members are already working on pieces that will showcase their individual styles and talents, from traditional to modern quilts and smaller items, such as wall hangings and cushions.

We will be raffling an award-winning quilt made by ESQ members. There are two other quilts – one made by a group member and one donated by The Fully Loaded Bobbin Group – and other prizes. All raffle proceeds will go to St Helena Hospice. There will be some trade stalls, a craft stall, a bag tombola and, of course, tea and lots of delicious home-made cakes! Not to be missed.

ROTARY CLUB MANNINGTREE STOUR VALLEY

Our current season concluded in May with a very well-attended annual general meeting.

Chairman Frank Pearson reflected on the progress the society had made over the last eight years and referred to the work undertaken by the officers and committee, thanking them for their contributions in the past year, especially those standing down on this occasion. He extended an invitation to members to take up some of the vacancies that were now arising. By general consensus, Frank and Wendy agreed to continue for another year as chairman and treasurer respectively.

In true Rotary fashion we welcome new officers and a new club president each year and our new president is Sue Clark. Sue has had a remarkable working life in the world of retail management.

Competition results were reviewed and prizes awarded to members achieving the highest cumulative number of points gained over the five competitions held during the year.

A summer barbecue is planned for July, and the Facebook challenge continues with a new subject set by Rachel every two weeks which is designed to stretch our photography skills and imagination. The subject for a recent Facebook challenge was Something Old. The winning image (shown above) was Old Knobbly by Sharon Smith.

The new season commences on 10 September with an open competition of images taken within a 10-mile radius of Manningtree to be judged by club members.

MANNINGTREE LOCAL HISTORY GROUP We are planning to hold a series of guided walks entitled Rigby Rambles on Saturday 20 July from 2-5pm and Wednesday 24 July from 6pm.

This is an opportunity to discover the important influence the Rigby family had on the growth of the town of Mistley.

There will be an exhibition in the two towers at the same times.

STOUR VALLEY U3A On Wednesday 10 July Paul Stancliffe, Media Manager of The British Trust for Ornithology, will talk to us on bird migration. He will explain what we know and what we don’t know and how the BTO is using the very latest technology to uncover the mysteries of bird migration. We will follow cuckoos, nightingales and swifts as they undertake amazing journeys to and from their wintering grounds.

Our meeting on August 14 is a member’s only event and will be held at the Venture Centre, Lawford CO11 2JE at the normal time. Further information will be given at the July meeting.

The theme of our meeting on September 11 is Great Composers of Film Music. Steve Johnson, a film enthusiast, will recall the history of music in film from the beginnings of sound, with emphasis on specific composers who have made significant contributions to music in film.

Each month The Coffee Grinders meet at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt CO7 6SD from 10am to noon. This meeting especially welcomes new members and gives all members the opportunity to meet the activity group leaders and the committee while enjoying a cup of coffee. The next meeting is on Friday 26 July.

TOM WATERS AND THE FEROCIOUS FIVE Upstairs at The Red Lion, Manningtree on Friday, July 5

Tom Waters is well-known to Red Lion regulars having accompanied his father, Ben, at his gigs there since he was 13. We are now delighted to bring him to Manningtree in his own right with his band, The Ferocious Five, on Friday 5 July.

Tom is becoming one of England’s greatest exponents for blues and jazz saxophone. Having played with members of The Rolling Stones, Ray Davies and Jools Holland, he has already made a name for himself. Touring with his dad, he got to see a lot of the world from an early age and to play with second-line bands in Chicago (Southern Komfort Brass Band) to pop bands in Canada (Broken Social Scene). Tom shows a wide range of versatility and creativity in his playing.

Tom is currently studying at the Purcell School of Music and attending the Royal Academy of Music.

STOUR VALLEY PROBUS CLUB On Wednesday 5 June, Norman Jacobs brought back memories of Light Entertainment from the 1920s to the 1950s. Two weeks later on 19 June, Cathy Shelbourne presented In the Wake of the Mayflower. Both were much enjoyed by members.

On 3 July, Peter Jones will talk about The Martello Towers of Essex and on 17 July Liz Barringer will talk about the work of The Leonard Cheshire Homes.

We don’t hold meetings in August and our speaker on 4 September is Mervyn Linford introducing us to the river from Cattawade Bridge to Ha’Penny Pier. Ted Wheatley will return on 18 September with a talk entitled Speakers’ Corner.

Our club endeavours to be simple in structure, free of the constraints and obligations of service clubs and involve members at minimal cost. The club is directed primarily to providing fellowship between members who are compatible with each other and the opportunity for development of acquaintances. New members are welcomed.

The Rainbows unit has completed their festival theme from last term where they celebrated festivals from many different cultures.

This term they will be enjoying the outdoors as much as possible with football, archery, circus skills and camping activities planned.

There will also be a visit to Capel St Mary allotments where the Rainbows will try their hand at pond dipping. They will be taking part in an Elmer themed day with Girlguiding Suffolk County which ties in with the St Elizabeth Hospice Elmer Trail which is taking place in Ipswich this summer.

The Beavers have been busy with lots of activities too. Recently they toured Ipswich Town Football Club and had a visitor from the RNLI. They were also fortunate to visit Wattisham Airfield to see the Apache helicopters. The Beavers also held their annual Easter Egg Hunt, visiting houses around the village.

The Scouts have also been getting out into the great outdoors and attended activity camp where they experienced caving and rifle shooting. They have also been working extensively on map and compass skills. Part of the group has been working hard to complete their Chief Scout Gold Award. This June will see them undertake an expedition which is their final activity as part of the award. Finally, there will be more opportunities to get outside with hiking, cycling and challenge award work on the horizon.

Tea and Support, the friendly, practical support group for those recently bereaved or left living alone, meets on the third Wednesday of each month, usually at Mistley Church Hall, New Road, Mistley (just opposite The Towers), between 2 and 4pm. Transport is available on request.

We offer a friendly and safe place to spend time with others, to make new friends or to get some practical support. Understanding that Sunday lunchtime is often difficult, some of our members meet at the Environmental Centre Cafe in New Road for a roast lunch on the first Sunday of each month.

On Wednesday 17 July we’ll meet at the Church Hall at noon for our annual trip to the seaside for a fish and chip lunch. Places for this outing must be booked at least a week in advance please.

On Wednesday 21 August we’ll have a summer special afternoon tea with a quiz, and on 18 September we’ll have a fun afternoon with Dom Turner.

Stour Valley Ladies Probus Club meets at The Haywain, Bentley Road, Little Bromley at 10am on the first and third Thursday in each month.

LAWFORD & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Students from Years 7 and 8 recently took part in the 2019 UKMT Junior Maths Challenge run by the University of Leeds.

Schools across the country entered this mathematical challenge which aimed to stimulate mathematical problem solving. It is the UK’s most popular mathematics competition with more than 300,000 students taking part each year.

The top 40 per cent of students are awarded gold, silver or bronze and around 8,000 of the highest achievers are invited to take part in the next round which is called the Junior Kangaroo.

Four Manningtree High School students from Year 8 – Oliver, Matthew, William and Edith –attained a gold certificate. William and Oliver scored the highest marks and are taking part in the Junior Kangaroo. There were also seven silver winners from MHS and 29 bronze winners. Well done to all who took part!

Once again Barry Gayton visited us from Thetford and gave an excellent talk on climbing plants and wall shrubs.

Barry has many unusual species that we had never seen before, but he was also very helpful with advice for our garden varieties, and he brought along lovely plants to buy, which is always fun.

Our next meeting is on July 18 when Nick Dobson will present a demonstration entitled World of Flowers.

You are all welcome to come along to see how we operate.

CHURCH NEWS BRANTHAM & CAPEL METHODIST CHURCHES OVERFLOWING JOY I’ve just had a weekend with my brother and our wives, going through family photos and letters. We have only just touched the surface of all the material we have between us and our sisters going back to the late 1800s.

There were fascinating letters from India from my Aunty Rose to her mother and family in Colchester, and letters from my mother (before she was married) when she first went out to India in 1935. She describes in great detail the journey, the life, the experience, learning Tamil and the language exams.

She describes a meal she was invited to by nurses and doctors in the hospital on the mission compound. They came and dressed her in a sari, put a garland of flowers around her neck, escorted her to the room where they shared the meal, laid out on banana leaves and shared in real Indian hospitality and customs.

She embraced Indian life to the full, bubbling over with enthusiasm at the wonder of it all. She had a degree in geography and botany and delighted in the creation around her. However, there were also hardships, health problems, abandoned children, a lack of water and coping with the heat, but what comes through the letters is overflowing joy in life.

My mum had known grief. On her seventh birthday, her eldest brother was killed in the Battle of the Somme. At university in Reading in 1930 the man she had expected to marry died of galloping tuberculosis. Their dreams of missionary work and having family were dashed.

So she accepted that God was calling her as a single missionary to serve in India where her elder sister had already been for many years. Her children would be the Indian children she would teach. One morning she was woken early and asked if she would adopt an abandoned girl. With permissions granted, she and her Indian colleague, Jane Moses, adopted Anbu (Tamil for love). After five years she was due home on furlough, but didn’t feel it was right to bring an Indian girl to Britain in 1940 with the war in Europe starting and so Anbu remained with Jane, with my mother expected to return to India in 12 months.

Because of the war, there were no passages for women and it was over five years before she returned, now married to my dad and with a child of

her own, Ruth. But that’s another exciting and emotional story to tell for another occasion.

We sometimes talk about people’s view of life – the optimists – a glass half full, the pessimists – a glass half empty. With my mother, despite the grief, the heartaches and the difficulties it was always a glass overflowing with joy.

Chip was very purposeful in tracing the beginnings of civilisation to recording events through stories and the essential role they play in human existence today and their essential contribution to libraries and how we can support them. He then weaved an interesting tale based on the town of Littleport, Cambridgeshire and the Viking King Canute.

Earlier, Pope Francis visited Skopje’s Mother Teresa Memorial House, which is built on the former site of The Sacred Heart Church where St Teresa of Kolkata was baptised. Mother Teresa’s childhood home and Sacred Heart Church were both destroyed in an earthquake in 1963.

As I write this the news of next year’s bank holiday changes has just been announced and many of those I meet are discussing their holiday plans for this year and next. Some are looking forward to a staycation, others to a trip overseas.

I am hoping to spend some time on a campsite in North Wales and time in the garden here! But I wonder if any of this is really a holiday. The word ‘holiday’ comes from the Old English word meaning a Holy Day or Sabbath. The idea of Sabbath is a change from the usual and with its Biblical origin it means a change to spending time on the things of God. So what are you doing for a change this summer? Why not come to a Sabbath Service and consider the things of God? On Sunday 6 July at 5pm

Our regular 5pm Service is designed for people who haven’t been to church before, or want to come back and we will be meeting Jesus with Matthew in these services. In the morning (10.30am) we are taking a broad brush look at the Bible, beginning as it does at the start of time and tracing the whole of God’s interaction with humanity. Every Sunday is a Sabbath celebration!

Welcome to Manningtree Benefice, an all-age Anglican Church meeting in St Lawrence Church, Bradfield, and St Mary & St Michael’s Church, Mistley.

I recently built some flat-pack furniture, and was impressed by how easily everything slotted together, and how clear the instructions were. Sometimes we think life should be easy, with full instructions, and that everything should fit together neatly like a piece of flat-pack. But it isn’t like that. Life is messy, often seems random, and can be incredibly joyful and utterly impossible all at the same time.

Christians don’t have all the answers, but we do believe we have a destination (in Jesus), a guide (the Bible), and a helper (the Holy Spirit). Why not come along to church to find out more?
