A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I heard an interesting term the other day, ‘world whelm’, defined as ‘crashing anxiety caused by a never-ending, nerve-fraying news feed’. Most of us will have experienced this at some point in recent months, but I hope we can provide a brief respite. I have my moments and occasionally despair when I watch the news, but as deadline day approaches and my inbox fills with emails from groups and individuals organising fundraising events or undertaking personal challenges to raise money for charity, I find comfort in knowing there are many, many, many good people doing good things every day of the week to help others.

So when ‘world whelm’ strikes, pick up your In Touch magazine to ease the anxiety and perhaps you’ll be inspired to do ‘your bit’. You don’t have to jump out of a plane! Just supporting others in their efforts, whether it’s a local event or a fundraising activity, is worthy, and you’ll discover other benefits too.

Living in a place where you don’t know your neighbours, where you don’t have any shared sense of space or don’t know what’s going on socially or politically, can feel isolating. That’s why it’s important to engage or to foster community spirit, to find ways to bond with neighbours and to build a life which extends beyond your front door. So turn off the TV, take a walk, shop locally, attend local events or join a committee, maybe even start a club, offer help when you can and ask for it when you need it.

I’ve occasionally been accused of being naïve, but I believe people are innately good and that social connection is a basic human need. I’ve read that strong social connection strengthens our immune system, helps us recover from disease faster, and may even lengthen our life. People who feel more connected to others have lower rates of anxiety and depression. Moreover, studies show they also have higher self-esteem, are more empathic to others, more trusting and cooperative and, as a consequence, others are more open to trusting and cooperating with them.

NEWS IN LOVING MEMORY OF JANET GORDON Janet Gordon was born in 1946 in Erith, Kent and came to be a teacher at Witnesham School between the years 1977 and 2007. She was a very liked and well thought of person in the school and village during these years.

She probably would have taught your children and maybe even your children’s children. As some of you may be aware, Janet sadly passed away on 22 October 2016. Her daughters Sarah and Gemma Gordon asked for donations to be made to get a memorial bench for their mother and the much loved teacher.

The bench will now sit proudly in the peace garden at Witnesham School. Sarah and Gemma would like to thank all who donated.

You’ll have no problem finding things to do or events to support this month.

NEWS ASHBOCKING NEWS I would like to thank all of you who attended the Ashbocking Annual Parish Meeting in May. The councillors appreciate your support. We know you all have other things that you could be doing, as indeed do we, but we come together at that meeting to celebrate all that has taken place within the community, for the community, organised Good to see the new bench being used by the people of the parish.

Also, it’s very pleasant having a glass of wine and a chat together and giving Tim Passmore and Matthew Hicks a slightly hard time. We thank the clerk, Steve Stegman, for keeping us afloat financially, and we hope you enjoyed the pictorial reminder of various activities over the past year in the village. Special thanks to Linda Pollard for her news of church events and for an insight into future ambitions.

It has been decided that it would be very helpful to have an assistant parish clerk. We would like a person to take the minutes at the meetings (we have about seven a year) and to make the minutes available to parish councillors and to In Touch magazine. We really want to reduce Steve’s work load. He will continue with all the finances, including the audit, and all the correspondence.

I would be grateful if anyone interested in this role would contact me, Steve, or any one of the councillors. This task is a great way of keeping in contact with what’s going on, it’s interesting to become more aware of district and county activities and it’s community work that looks good on your CV. You’ll get lots of help, and a salary!

All dog owners will have received a letter from the parish council advising them of the problem we are facing on our footpaths and community land with the evils of dog poo litter. People outside the parish may be the culprits. Please all be vigilant and proactive so we become a no dog poo tolerant village.

Hopefully your diaries have recorded September 9 for the Teddy Bears’ Picnic. It’s really an excuse to get your teddy bears out of cold storage, whatever age you are, and come and celebrate the community land.

There will be a barbecue, tug of war, a table tennis bonanza and more.

So, ‘if you go down to the woods...you’re sure of a big surprise!’ Let’s hope it’s not dog poo!

WITNESHAM VILLAGE RECORDER’S REPORT 2016 – PART ONE A brief look at some of the events in Witnesham during 2016 Parish Council January 20: Steve Baron appointed as new clerk.

March 16: Current account at £24,000 plus £8,000 in the building society.

A number of planning applications received including housing scheme at Fynn Valley Golf Club. Suggestion of fixed speed indicator devices to slow traffic was again rejected by the committee. Flooding problems in the village, especially in Coopers Close, possible blocked drains.

The village recorder’s report was issued in April. The AGM took place in May with Mr Rush being elected as chairman. Current account at £27,266.11 with £8,141.03 in the building society account. Planning applications, speeding through the village and footpaths were the main discussion points.

July: The bank balance now stands at £18,144.18. The building society balance remains unchanged. Footpaths again were a major discussion point, also traffic and flooding.

September 21: The meeting dealt in the main with on-going issues such as highways and planning.

November 16: Many on-going issues discussed. Replacing the current 30mph signs through the village would cost between £10K and £18K (yes that’s £10,000-£18,000). Under planning the following were given permission by SCDC – Spinney Cottage, Fynn Valley Golf Club and land on Mow Hill. Among those refused were The Barn, Strugglers Lane and the land opposite Burwash. Thanks were given to those involved in the recent Barley Players production by the chairman Chris Rush.

GIANT QUIZ NIGHT RETURNS FOR 2017 Regarded as one of the region’s biggest trivia events, local family run hearing specialists, The Hearing Care Centre announces the return of their Charity Quiz Night.

The event, which is the company’s thirteenth quiz fundraiser, is being held on Sunday, June 11 at 7pm at Greshams Ipswich on Tuddenham Road. Teams can include between four and six members and entry is only £5 with nibbles included.

Thanks to generous support from local businesses, there are cash prizes to be won for the top five teams, as well as a giant prize draw. All proceeds from the evening will be donated to The Hearing Care Centre’s chosen charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Karen Finch, Managing Director at The Hearing Care Centre, is a specialist in looking after patients with hearing difficulties. She expressed: “Hearing Dogs give many deaf people confidence, independence and companionship.

“The wonderful support we have received from the local community and our patients at our previous quizzes has been astonishing.

“To date, this annual event has helped raise almost £20,000. Join us for a great evening out with friends and family, all helping an excellent cause.”

OUT & ABOUT GARDEN AT BERGHERSH PLACE OPEN TO RAISE MONEY FOR CHARITY

ASHBOCKING, SWILLAND AND WITNESHAM WI

Sunday, June 25, 2-5.30pm The garden of Berghersh Place in Witnesham will be open on June 25 for the National Gardens Scheme which raises money in aid of the following charities: Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, Carer’s Trust (support for carers throughout the UK), Perennial (charity for horticulturalists in need), Parkinson’s UK, Horatio’s Garden (NHS gardens for spinal injuries) and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Berghersh Place is an extended Regency farmhouse (house not open) with historical links to Witnesham Hall. Its peaceful walled and hedged gardens are set among grass fields above Witnesham village with views over the Fynn Valley. Starting from the farm buildings there is a circular walk with lawns, ponds, a mound and bog area, orchard paddock and a large informal family garden with shrub roses underplanted with perennials. The garden has been created over the last 20 years by the current owners.

We organised another successful litter pick throughout Swilland and Witnesham and were joined by members and friends for a great morning’s work. Lunch was the incentive for afterwards, with hot soup and delicious pudding at the village hall.

Directions: Drive slowly north of Witnesham village to the farm entry on concrete track from the B1077 after Berghersh House, turning in before North Lodge and before the sharp bend which leads to the Ashbocking crossroads. The house is accessible by footpath from Weyland Road and from Church Lane, Witnesham. There is no motor access or parking from the bridleway which starts from Berghersh Lane, Ashbocking Road, Henley.

Entry for adults is £3.50 with children under 16 free. Tea and cakes available.

HASKETON’S JAZZ PICNIC Taking a new slant on a well-established event that supports Hasketon Parish Church, the Traditional Jazz Barbecue has morphed into a Bring Your Own Picnic (BYOP for short).

OUT & ABOUT GREAT BLAKENHAM OVER 50S CLUB The club is open to anyone of that age living not just in Great Blakenham but anywhere in the surrounding area. We meet from 2-4pm on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the Parish Room, Stowmarket Road, Great Blakenham. The cost per meeting is £1.50 which includes whatever activity is programmed for the afternoon, refreshments and raffle. On afternoons when we may play a couple of games of bingo the tickets are £1 each. Members take it in turns to make the tea. The Parish Room is the building with a green door more or less opposite the Chequers Public House, with its own parking area at the rear. It is fully accessible for anyone in a wheelchair and has disabled facilities within.

In April we had an Easter themed social afternoon which included a yellow raffle and at our meeting on April 24 we were pleased to see Peter Banham on a return visit with his interactive talk on old sayings and their meanings which everyone found very entertaining and informative. We were also pleased to welcome Maureen and Michael Hall, Gill Glaister and Pam Rudland as new members to the club.

SILBURY HILL DATE WITH THE ANGEL Suffolk based duo Silbury Hill are playing a concert at the Angel Public House in Debenham on Saturday, June 17. This will be the duo’s first appearance at the popular pub.

Silbury Hill – Scott Dolling (flute, guitar, vocals) and David Stainer (guitar, mandolin, vocals) – play a lively, crowd pleasing mix of music by artistes as varied as Sting, Crowded House, Lindisfarne and Jethro Tull, as well as their own original songs.

The duo play at festivals, events, bars and clubs throughout East Anglia and beyond. They have supported a number of professional touring bands and have played several live radio sessions. To date they have produced three CDs of original material and their music has been used on film.

SCHOOLS WITNESHAM AREA PRE-SCHOOL This term we are learning all about minibeasts. To share this with the wider community we ran a very successful minibeast day. At this free event children were able to get hands-on with creepy crawlies and make all sorts of minibeast themed arts and crafts. We found a whole host of minibeasts in the pre-school garden including a huge ants nest, frogs and toads, millipedes, centipedes, spiders, woodlice and worms. All topped off with tea and cake.

We are also starting to make a vegetable garden for the children to grow their own food. We thank Sara and Warren for building our new colourful raised beds from some old pallets and Matt and Rose for building the new mud kitchen out of pallets and an old sink. We also thank Morrisons and Wyevale for their kind donation of compost and plants and Tesco and Sainsbury’s who donated eggs for our Easter raffle.

THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE NURSERY, HELMINGHAM This term the children are caring for animals that they might have as pets.

Our role play area has become a busy veterinary surgery with several dogs, mice, rabbits, guinea pigs and the odd tiger and elephant. Beds and cushions keep them comfortable, bowls are filled with food and a full complement of stethoscopes, syringes and thermometers allow the children an opportunity for dialogue, writing prescriptions and also taking money at the cash register.

Next we plan to refurbish the old play equipment and tidy up the top garden. Any volunteers are welcome to join us in doing this – please get in touch to find out more. We have planned a further fundraising event for July, a Ladies Afternoon Tea on Sunday, July 16. More details will follow in the next issue.

If you are wondering how we use the funds that we raise, the answer is that Suffolk County Council has insisted that we sign up to a maintenance lease of £1,800 per year. We are currently in negotiations about this as we are a charity which only just breaks even – an annual outgoing such as this would cripple us. Therefore we are fundraising to ensure that whatever happens we will be able to continue running and providing good quality pre-school education.

HELMINGHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL At the end of the spring term our youngest class witnessed a chick hatching. As you can imagine this was very exciting and the chick was subsequently named Fluffy. Over the holidays four further chicks were born so now we have five being looked after in school.

Children in Years 3 and 4 enjoyed a sprint training session followed by a swimming session as part of their Being a Good Sport topic. They had a great time but were very tired.

To support their China topic, Years 5 and 6 had a visitor in to teach them Chinese writing and dance. At the end of the term they held a China exhibition and produced lots of hands-on activities to teach the rest of the school about China.

Overall Helmingham had an exciting term and learnt loads!

Every Friday we go out for a walk in the woods to investigate and explore – whatever the weather. We are very grateful to the Framsden fundraisers who have helped us purchase a Toby Trolley which the children are able to pull along. We can transport sitters and storybooks to share in a leafy glade. We can take water which means we can do some tree mud faces and if we have a weary traveller we can offer a lift. We have attached a rope so we can all pull it along as this is very popular.

Our fundraising quiz night is at Framsden Village Hall on Saturday, June 10 at 7pm. It’s only £5 per person and teams are encouraged to bring their own picnic. A bar is available and tickets can be purchased from the nursery.

Our annual sports day is on June 24 from 1.30-3pm on Helmingham Primary School field. Expect stalls, activities, refreshments and, of course, children’s races. Everyone is welcome.

HENLEY PRE-SCHOOL Henley Pre-School is located in the village of Henley, a short five minute drive from the centre of Ipswich. We operate from the Boughton Room in Henley Community Centre and have sole use of a lovely outdoor garden which allows free flow play throughout the session. Session times are Monday to Friday 9am-noon and noon-3pm with an optional lunchtime club each day. We open term time only.

This term the children have been busy in the garden planting strawberries, runner beans, potatoes, peas, spinach and herbs and we are planning on developing our flower bed over the next few weeks. Many thanks to Bob, our wonderful volunteer gardener, for all his hard work with the children which has transformed our garden.

We have also been looking at pets and have put together a pet board of photos of all our lovely cats, dogs, rabbits, fish, ducks, horses and even a rhea. The children have also enjoyed various craft and cooking activities

and we will soon be thinking about Father’s Day and transition to school.

We aim to provide a safe, friendly and stimulating environment where children can expand their own individual and creative skills through imaginative and social activities. We cater for the individual needs of the children and ensure quality of opportunity through carefully planned activities to help them develop in all areas of learning.

Our friendly, qualified staff will be on hand to chat and answer any questions you may have. National Croquet Day is on Sunday, June 4 and Ipswich Croquet Club would like to invite you to try this amazing game for free.

Volleyball is loads of fun and a very friendly game. It’s the only high-energy, no-contact mixed team sport you can play indoors and outdoors, whatever your ability. It’s energetic enough to help with your fitness, but without placing high demands on your body, and good teamwork is important as well as individual skill.

We shall be having an open day at our lawns at Fynn Valley Golf Club, Witnesham from 10.30am until 3.30pm. Everyone is welcome. Have a go at some of the fun challenges, join a beginners class or just watch.

Ipswich Croquet Club was founded over 100 years ago and first played on Portman Marshes (where the football ground is now).

In 1930 it was established in Christchurch Park, but in 2012 moved to Fynn Valley Golf Club where we have two full sized lawns in their beautiful grounds and can take advantage of all they have to offer including the café bar and restaurant.

We play both forms of the game – association croquet, an enthralling tactical game, and golf croquet, a quicker and less involved game.

Both can be played competitively – Ipswich Croquet Club has produced a world champion and four other international players plus, in 2015 and 2016, some of our junior members won the National Schools Championships. It can also be played purely for fun.

Informal coaching is available every club night and there are also formal courses for beginners and improvers which are free for members.

This summer is the perfect time to give volleyball a go and find out why it’s one of the top three most-played sports in the world. The sport is thriving in Suffolk with clubs in Ipswich and Stowmarket with members of mixed abilities, male and female, and all ages from teenagers to their grandparents. The clubs will all give a warm welcome to prospective new players whether experienced or complete beginners, and this summer you can go along to join a session and play some friendly games at a park near you.

Ipswich Ravens and Ipswich Volleyball Club play in Christchurch Park (near the Westerfield Road entrance) on Saturday afternoons, while Stowmarket VC play on the Recreation Ground on Tuesday and Sunday evenings. All sessions are subject to weather and other fixtures.

The great thing is – all sessions are completely free.

The clubs are happy to accommodate people who want to play either competitively or just at a recreational level. All sessions are organised by qualified coaches who also give some playing advice to each individual.

For most of my life I have watched and read about conflict and proxy wars in faraway places. As a teenager, I saw in my newspaper starving children buried as Biafra fell apart. I joined Oxfam and Third World First.

As students, we lobbied for change.

As an adult, I occasionally met with people fleeing the Sudan, Ethiopia and Vietnam. I was usually struck by the optimism and thanks of people who had very little. Their gratitude for small kindness and their hope for the future were impressive. Working to organise ESOL, education support and toy libraries was a joy.

For two decades, we have watched men with modern weapons destroy the cities of the Middle East. As I write the nerve gas Sarin is being used in Syria. People are being evacuated from the ruins into the safety and misery of the camps. Each night we have seen the horror of shattered lives and dying children.

Whatever your views on immigration the poorest of the poor are the displaced people of Syria. They have nothing. Until December, 100,000 people were repeatedly barrel bombed in an area of less than two square kilometres. Aleppo is now another ruin in the desert.

For me the one response is to encourage Suffolk Refugee Support based in Ipswich. In 2016 this small organisation started to settle Syrian refugee families taken from the camps in Turkey.

The aims of Suffolk Refugee Support are straightforward – to help rebuild shattered lives and support individuals to become fully functioning members of UK society.

With a small team of less than 10, FTE employees and 55 volunteers, Suffolk Refugee Support is engaged in long term activity. A drop-in advice centre is the initial contact with men’s groups, women’s groups, ESOL teaching (English for speakers of other languages), employee advice and outreach.

OTLEY HALL RETREAT DAYS

Suffolk has agreed to take 200 Syrian refugees over the next five years as part of the national programme. These people will all need support in the years to come.

Unfortunately, many abuse that position for their own ends rather than the people they serve through leading. Although I think it is a privilege to vote, therefore we ought to, it is more important how we live in the families and communities that we are part of.

This month we in the church celebrate the birthday of the church at the time of Pentecost, the time when the promise made by Jesus at Easter time and just before He ascended into heaven was fulfilled. The Holy Spirit came onto the disciples and through the years is available to all who trust in Jesus now.

It is the power of the Holy Spirit in us that helps us to live in way described in Matthew. I’m not saying that we all or always live in this way, but we do try and through church we can encourage each other to keep on trying.

Wednesday, June 14: Prayer Fellowship at 2pm

Over the past few days, instigated by Justine Welby, many in the churches have been praying that God’s Kingdom will come and His will be done. God’s Kingdom supersedes the kingdoms of the world and we can be part of this as we follow Jesus and serve Him as King above all earthly kings and authorities. Seek God’s Kingdom first before you vote on June 8.

The church is open for prayer and listening every Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am to 5pm; at other times please contact Pastor Andrew.

In Touch with WTW Happy Birthday Church In the church calendar, the first Sunday in June is called ‘Pentecost’. It is also known as the birthday of the Christian Church.

In ancient Greek, pentekoste means ‘fiftieth day’—that is, the fiftieth day after Easter (counting Easter day itself).

On that day, Christians celebrate an event described in the Bible that took place fifty days after Christ’s resurrection, when the apostles heard the rush of a mighty wind, saw tongues of fire descending on them, and heard the Holy Spirit speaking from their own mouths but in other tongues or languages.

The story of the events of the day of Pentecost, immediately after the resurrection of Jesus, is told in the second chapter of The Acts of the Apostles.

Since Easter we have all been tracing the growing understanding of what all that meant, and where it might lead, rather like a smouldering fire that has suddenly burst into flames.

A global wave of prayer from 25th May—4th June

The disciples had already experienced the risen Christ appearing amongst them and filling them with peace, happiness reassurance and enlightenment. Now, on the day of Pentecost, Jesus comes not so much amongst them as within them, in a breath-taking way which will allowed them to be truly at one with Him, as He is one with the Father.

Between 25th May and 4th June, communities and churches around the world are gathering together to pray that their friends, families and neighbours come to know Jesus Christ.

Pentecost was only the beginning. It was not only to those first disciples that the Holy Spirit was granted.

There is plenty of it left for us. God is prepared to make his home with believers of any age; anyone who prays with genuine desire will receive the gift that God loves to give.

It must have been an awe-some occasion for those who were present.

It was a direct result of the victory won by Jesus over sin and death on Good Friday, which became obvious with the Resurrection on Easter Day.

Here we see some of the walkers who were about to set out from Witnesham to Tuddenham were they enjoyed a welcome cup of tea and cake at ‘The Old Stores’ before going to the church for evensong and the final leg back to Westerfield Church where they’d begun.
