A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

NEWS

My parents celebrated their golden anniversary in June and, as you do at times such as this, we have talked at length about the trials and tribulations they faced over the years, some good, some not so. I’m proud their marriage was rock solid throughout, even when faced with tough financial times on the farm, a variety of health challenges, a rather rebellious teenage daughter and, in recent years, the collapse of the Irish economy which has impacted on everyone in one way or another.

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED FOR HOME-START

Married in 1966 and parents for the first time in 1967, my mum and dad showed remarkable resilience when it may have been easier to walk away. Back then when farm machinery was either unavailable or unaffordable, farming was not for the fainthearted, but they were a formidable team. Mum was the ultimate survivor. She baked, she sewed, she kept a garden, she helped on the farm, she managed the books… she did what had to be done to make ends meet and she and dad were totally committed to giving my brothers and I every opportunity they had been denied. They also knew how to have fun. My mum could turn a Sunday picnic in the garden into an unforgettable adventure. That said I don’t ever want to eat ox tongue sandwiches again as long as I live.

Volunteers are at the very heart of the service, connecting on a one-to-one basis with families, offering friendship and support.

Our annual daytrip to Kinvarra beach and the annual pilgrimage to Knock were the highlights of summers spent in the garden and on the farm. Every year I bought red heart-shaped sun glasses in Kinvarra and one of those little toy camera picture viewers in Knock and I was the happiest little girl in the world. My life is remarkable different to theirs, but I suspect my everyday worries are not entirely dissimilar. Making my own butter or knitting socks aren’t realistic money-saving options for me, but, thanks to my parents, I do have a ‘pull your socks up and get on with it’ approach to most things, and this I’m grateful for in these rather disconcerting political times.

NEWS CELEBRATING A FUNDRAISING HERO

RELAXED, DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY FILM SCREENINGS Suffolk Cinema Network and The Regal in Stowmarket are pleased to present a series of relaxed film screenings, particularly accessible to people living with dementia. A cinema outing is often no longer an option for those suffering with illness and frailty and yet the cinematic experience is great entertainment for all – and can hold strong memories. These screenings have been curated with sensitivity towards those with dementia. Each screening event will have a few volunteers on-hand, a quiet breakout space, raised lighting in the auditorium and intervals in the films. These screenings are open to everyone. Carers must accompany those who require ongoing assistance. After the first screening on September 7 there will also be an event at The Mix, opposite The Regal, for anyone wishing to get more information about dementia or find local support. This event will feature a dementiafriendly session, information on other activities across Stowmarket and a light lunch.

Jean and friends who helped at the garden sale Let’s take a moment to acknowledge the fundraising achievements of Stowmarket resident 83-year-old Jean Powell. Showing remarkable initiative and determination, Jean has raised £1,000 for Macmillan Nurses by knitting dolls (policemen and ballerinas), making beautiful decorated vases and cakes and holding a garden sale outside her home. Jean is a true inspiration and just shows what one person can do to make life better for so many others.

NEWS STOWMARKET WARDS

REPORT FROM KEITH WELHAM

Simply Brass celebrate second birthday Every so often you get to go to an event you might not normally get to. Such was the case when Councillor Dave Muller and I accompanied by our wives attended Simply Brass’ Birthday Gala Concert on Saturday, July 9 at the John Peel Centre for the Creative Arts in Stowmarket.

District Councillor for Stowupland and Creeting St Peter

Simply Brass (Stowmarket) is a musical organisation focused on helping young people experience the joy of music making as part of a team. And what a team they are. Made up of youngsters aged seven to 18 they put on a fantastic performance led by Ian and Nina Harvey who initiated the project along with a committed group of parents. Simply Brass celebrated their birthday in style with many of the young people playing solos and the oldest, Megan, who is about to go to university, conducting a small group of her own. What marvellous confidence. By taking part in this musical group these young people are developing life skills that will stand them in good stead in the future. If you can stand up in front of a packed house at age seven then there is no limit to what you can do. This was a thoroughly uplifting experience. You can follow Simply Brass on Facebook and find out more at: www.simplybrassstowmarket.org.uk Devolution At its council meeting last month Mid Suffolk District Council, which includes Stowmarket, voted to proceed to consultation on the devolution deal that both Norfolk and Suffolk are jointly pursuing. Mid Suffolk is one of 19 local authorities across the region that committed to proceed to statutory consultation which will run until August 23 in order to ask local people and communities for their views. This is an opportunity to consider devolution that would see certain decision-making powers and funding transferred from central government to our local areas. Decisions can be taken locally by those who better know the strengths and challenges of their communities. Funding can be targeted to areas and projects which, as local councillors, we know will have the greatest impact for our communities. The proposed deal for our two counties offers a once-in-a-generation chance to transform our economic landscape through £25m of funding each year for the next 30 years, and grow the Norfolk/Suffolk economy from £32bn to £43bn. Up to 95,000 more jobs, 10,000 new businesses and 10,000 apprenticeships are expected to be created by 2026. £130m investment over five years would support the building of new homes across Norfolk and Suffolk and over the lifetime of the deal around 200,000 homes could be delivered. The deal also offers us control of a £225m transport budget for the next four years.

The country seems to be in political turmoil just now, post the Brexit vote. The Green Party and the Conservative Party are both looking for a new leader, Labour MPs want a new leader and the district councils, together with Suffolk and Norfolk County Councils, are consulting on a devolution deal offered by government. This would include a combined authority made up of representatives of all the district councils, both county councils and representatives from business. Head of the authority would be a directly elected mayor, elected in May 2017. At a meeting of the full council of Mid Suffolk at the end of June views were split, more on the detail than the principle. The deal requires every district council to accelerate house building, but there is little about protecting the environment. Within the Ipswich Borough boundary there is a shortage of suitable land and some of the Ipswich housing need is likely to be met within Mid Suffolk. But we don’t want to be just a dormitory for Ipswich and all stations to London; this is what many fear. Devolution will transfer responsibility for improving skills and training and future deals might bring together healthcare and social care under the combined authority. Much of what is proposed is good and should benefit residents of Mid Suffolk, but we need to see the checks and balances. We do not need an expensive extra tier of local government so we will need to see that this doesn’t happen. Initially, devolution of power from central government will have little effect on most residents of Stowupland. But we need to make sure that landowners and potential developers do not get further permissions for inappropriate house building. Other elements of the deal are control of a £225m transport budget for the next four years and £25m funding each year for the next 30 years to support economic growth, development of local infrastructure and jobs. More information is available on the Mid Suffolk website where there is also a link to the consultation which runs until August 23. I aim to make myself available to every resident and I will be pleased to deal with any queries and requests for assistance. Please contact me if you think that I can help. Keith Welham, 01449 673185 / keith.welham@midsuffolk.gov.uk

The deal would create a combined authority made up of an elected member from all constituent councils across Norfolk and Suffolk and a directly elected mayor. The combined authority would decide the most effective and efficient level to deliver services to ensure the best possible outcomes for communities.

STOWMARKET ARTISAN MARKET

Stowmarket residents can have their say about our devolution deal and its governance arrangements by visiting www.eastangliadevo.co.uk and completing the online survey or the hard copy version. The website also includes further information about the proposed deal and the role of the proposed combined authority and mayor.

Free admission: tea/coffee and cake £1. We are located at The Scout Centre, Milton Road North, Stowmarket (just past the library). This coming month we will have a fantastic choice of jewellery on sale (rings from £1), cakes, textiles, crafts and, of course, Jill’s Knitted Novelties!

Views from public consultation (including a telephone survey of more than 3,000 people) will be reported to the Secretary of State in September, for him to consider ahead of any decision to create a combined authority or arrangements for mayoral elections. All councils, including Mid-Suffolk District Council, will then consider the proposed deals again by the end of October and decide whether to go ahead. Paul Ekpenyong, on behalf of the Conservative and Independent Councillors for Stowmarket Wards

OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET BOYS BRIGADE BAND

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

Over the last few weeks the band has been very busy with events in and around Stowmarket, the first of which was leading the Royal British Legion Standards around Suffolk Show, a regular event we look forward to.

Must-see musical comedy from SODS SODS’ must-see September comedy, Little Shop of Horrors, is a delectable spoof horror musical written by Howard Ashman with an electrifying 1960s score by Alan Menken.

Next was the strawberry fete at Alder Carr Farm helping to raise funds for a local charity. This was an arena event and many children followed the band around which was great fun. The parade to Pikes Meadow on Armed Forces Day was led by the band who again gave a display during the programme of events. This was followed by a RBL rally at Haughley with a well received parade and arena event. We are taking part in the fete at Cornwallis Court, a care and retirement home in Bury St Edmunds, again this year and also at Stowmarket Carnival. It hasn’t all been fun for band members as we lost one of our original members and most of the band attended his funeral service as he had done a lot in starting and training the band. Thank you Les.

Seymour Krelborn, a meek and dejected assistant in a flower shop on Skid Row, New York, discovers an exotic plant. He affectionately names it Audrey II after his fellow shop assistant, on whom he has a crush. Little does he know that this strange and unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice and an unquenchable thirst for human blood! Jo Jones as Chiffon, Sarah Roberts As Audrey II grows bigger and as Crystal and Jess Ellis as Ronette meaner, the carnivorous plant Picture by Peter Hawkes promises limitless fame and fortune to Seymour, as long as he continues providing a fresh supply of blood. Just when it’s too late, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s extraterrestrial origins and ambitions for world-domination. If you’ve seen the show before, you’ll already love it – if not come and experience this feelgood mix of fun, flamboyance and foliage!

There will be six performances at the John Peel Centre from Tuesday, September 6 to Saturday 10 at 7.30pm with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm. Tickets are £13 and available from the John Peel Centre: 01449 774678 / www.johnpeelcentre.com

WOOLPIT DRAMA CLUB The club’s 2016 summer production will be Alice’s Adventures, a charming tale combining vignettes and characters from two Lewis Carroll books, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. This is an open air, promenade performance, and the venues are some of the most beautiful gardens in Suffolk, where spectators will be able to bring a picnic. You are invited to walk through the garden and meet Alice’s strange and curious friends The White Rabbit, The Mad Hatter and many others.

PERSONAL ADVICE, HEALTH & BEAUTY MOVING SAFELY BACK INTO SCHOOL It might seem wrong to be planning for going back to school when the children have just finished the school year, but that long summer holiday will be over before you know it. Getting prepared for going back usually requires the obligatory trip for new uniform, pencil case, pens, paper and new shoes. The costs certainly can mount up. It’s very easy to skimp on a good pair of trainers and get the cheapest pair possible. After all they are going to grow out of them pretty quickly, or wear them out.

There is some food for thought though when you come to choosing cheap versus quality trainers for your children. There is a large push for people, especially children, to be more active, live an active lifestyle and take up some form of sport. More people playing sport will, due to random chance alone, lead to more injuries. Most healthcare professionals feel that a large percentage of sports related injuries could have been avoided or reduced in consequence with better physical preparation and appropriate equipment. Take a look at Andy Murray and how he has transformed himself from the talented but physically weak player to world beating grand slam champ. A large part of getting him to where he is today has been the hours of physical training and regular physiotherapy to keep him in tip top shape. The actual numbers of children involved in sport has been shown to be really quite high – much higher than adults. 79% of children aged five-15 are participating in some form of organised sport. Of these 11% are involved in intensive training. Working your body towards its limits can lead to injury, and unfortunately three-11% of school age children are injured every year playing sport. The cynics may say that is strong evidence to stop playing sport. However, the majority of the injuries are sprains and strains to muscles and joints. Yes they often heal pretty quickly in the young; treatment often accelerates the healing and reduces the pain and discomfort of an injury. It is also worth considering that the child’s musculoskeletal system is one which is growing and developing. An injury which appears to get better very quickly may lead to progressive permanent effects which may only become apparent in later life. Why suffer later in life for an issue caused when you were a child. By having a thorough assessment of your child’s physicality now you can find out where they may have issues when they play sport or do physical activity. Finding their ‘weak’ areas and having an exercise or two or some stretches to help rectify or improve these at risk areas could prevent a lot of time in pain or a lot of money spent trying to get things sorted later down the line.

OUT & ABOUT CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE

PICTURE: ©Mark Ward Media

Sunday, July 5 saw the arrival of the group of children from Belarus who have joined us for a one month health respite visit. The 18 children and two interpreters arrived at Gatwick Airport after a long and tiring journey, having left home very, very early in the morning. Thank goodness at least the sun was shining, but many of the children were shivering as they left the airport having come from a blistering 35 degrees at home. We were fortunate to miss the traffic problems on the way home and arrived in Stowmarket where all the host families were waiting in anticipation to meet their new house guests. Thank you to the Cedars Hotel who stepped in at the last minute and gave us the use of their conference room for the meeting point.

FESTIVAL OF CLASSIC & SPORTS CARS The annual Festival of Classic and Sports Cars will take place at Helmingham Hall on Sunday, August 7. Held in association with Suffolk Vehicle Enthusiast’s Club (SVEC), this year’s event is the biggest yet and will showcase more than 800 cars representing the last 100 years of motoring history. It will also raise money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), a charity which gives support to families and cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions.

A big thank you to the team of ladies who got together the previous week to iron all the clothing that had been donated so the program could start with them all being able to choose clothes for themselves and for siblings back home. Donations this year have been amazing with a tremendous amount of new clothing received from our very generous supporters.

Set in the grounds of the stunning 15th century moated Helmingham Hall with its Grade I listed gardens, the backdrop for the festival could not be more beautiful. The garden will be open and visitors are invited to wander through the fragrant rose garden, pause a while on the stunning parterre and explore the kitchen garden with its overflowing borders and tunnels of ornamental vegetables. The festival is a highlight in the Helmingham Hall calendar of events and attracted more than 7,000 visitors in 2015, raising £5,500 for The Treehouse hospice in Ipswich. This is very much a family day out and there are plenty of activities planned for children. There will be mini Land Rovers for them to drive, fairground stalls, birds of prey demonstrations and other events in the main entertainment ring. There will also be over 40 craft and trade stalls and plenty of refreshment choices ranging from pies to Pimms, to homemade cakes and other delicacies with an international flavour from around the world. Folk singers The Broadside Boys, The Suffolk Phoenix Brass Band and Itchy Feet will provide musical entertainment and the Chocks Away dance troupe will be demonstrating their jive, swing and lindy hop skills.

One little girl had a big surprise as it was her eighth birthday on the Tuesday after arrival and we held a surprise party for her (probably for the first time in her life) and there was a visit from Steff N Nonsense who provided fantastic entertainment. Not only is Steff an all round children’s entertainer she is also a Bubbleologist and it was fantastic to see the huge range of bubbles she produced.

The Festival of Classic and Sports Cars is on Sunday, August 7 from 10am to 5pm and admission is £9 for adults, £4 for children and £22 for a family of four. Tickets are available on the gate (cash only) or in advance via the Helmingham Hall website. www.helmingham.co.uk.

Our program is now in full swing and the children are looking forward every day to experiencing something new and exciting. We meet daily Monday to Friday at Bloomfield Football Club and again we would like to express our thanks to them for their support as without this facility, allowing working parents to host, we would not be able to bring the children. The children are now all busy working on their memory books and will go home with them full of memories they will be able to look back on and remember forever.

SUMMER AT THE MIX

We never forget that without your support these children would not be here and whatever your contribution, big or small, it all adds up to what we need to bring each child so from us and from them, thank you very much. OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET CONCERT BAND

SIMPLY BRASS STOWMARKET – YOUR LOCAL YOUTH BRASS BAND

It has been a busy time for the band with lots of events in the local community. The Queen’s birthday saw many booking enquiries as brass bands across the country were called upon to provide music for parties. We celebrated in Bacton with some light music and the weather held out for a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday and the National Anthem. Following this we were delighted to perform at two local events, StowFiesta and Armed Forces Day. Both great days with plenty of opportunities for local groups to perform. We’ve also made another visit to the Target Club for a night of sing-a-longs and guest conductors. Coming up in August we head further afield to Nicholas Everitt Park in Oulton Broad to perform on the bandstand over the bank holiday weekend. Our training band have been adding new skills to their repertoire as they have practiced marching for the Stowmarket Carnival. They’re also getting new tunes under their belt – expect to hear Bond themes, Bruno Mars and maybe even some Ed Sheeran like you’ve never heard before. Recently we welcomed Sue on tenor horn and Finlay on cornet. Congratulations to those who are also performing with the main band as well now: Oliver Hampton, Sam Forge, Sue Blackaby and Sam Brett. The training band is open to both adults and children and if you are interested in joining, please contact us and we can advise on when are next taking beginners and what instruments are available. Check our website for more details or email: trainingband@stowmarketconcertband.org.uk

ROYAL AIR FORCES ASSOCIATION, STOWMARKET BRANCH Darren Dordoy from the Museum of East Anglian Life gave a presentation entitled An Armchair Walk Around Stowmarket at our June meeting. Instead of our usual meeting in July, it has been tradition for many years to have a mystery trip. This year our evening out ended at the Shepherd & Dog in Onehouse. Our meal and the service could not have been better. It was very fortunate that they had a TV showing the EURO semifinal football match between Wales and Portugal. We were proud to take part in the parade for Armed Forces Day which was held on Pikes Meadow at Combs Ford. There were many stalls and entertainment in the arena all day. We were pleased with the interest shown in our own stall. Our Standard bearer took part in the service to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. Several of our members attended and Ralph, our archivist, read out the names of some of the local men that lost their lives. BREW FOR THE FEW We would like to remind you of our annual Brew for the Few in the United Reform Church Hall on Saturday, September 3. This is our main fundraiser and we will have many stalls including cakes, books, tombola and bric-a-brac. We will, also, be serving coffee/tea and cakes and our now, well renowned, Ploughman’s Lunches. Please make a note of the date and try to support us. July has been a very busy and exciting month for the band. We’ve been to visit a number of schools in and around Stowmarket, performing and talking about the enjoyment of making music as part of our brass band. Have you seen us? We have also performed at the library and to a sell-out audience at the John Peel Centre for our second birthday gala concert. We’re very proud that seven of our members have just received the news that they have passed their music exams, one at grade two level and six at grade one. Well done to you all. Now for the really exciting news. Due to the rapidly increasing standard of our players and our high level of membership, we’re very pleased to announce the formation of a second group in September for those children new to brass. Lead by Nina Harvey, brass teacher at Freeman CP School, the second group will go from the basics of reading music through to performance as part of a band. Why not bring your children along for a taster session to see what we do? If you’d like to find out more about the band, ether to book or to join, you can find us at www.simplybrassstowmarket.co.uk and on Facebook or email us at: simplybrassstowmarket@gmail.com

OUT & ABOUT MUSEUM OF EAST ANGLIAN LIFE

MID-SUFFOLK LIGHT RAILWAY MUSEUM

East Anglian Living History Fayre: Saturday, August 13 & Sunday 14

Suffolk Museum of the Year 2015 Mid-Suffolk Light Railway, affectionately known as the ‘Middy’, was a classic case of a railway built too late for the great railway age. It never paid its way and was effectively broke before it opened. Operating in receivership from the start the line was never fully completed, the rails petering out in the middle of a field. However it still managed to struggle on against all the odds for 50 years. In 1991, after almost all traces of the line had disappeared, a group of enthusiasts decided this country railway, once so important to the area, should not be forgotten. The ‘Middy’, a fine example of rural English history, is now resurrected as Suffolk’s only standard gauge railway museum and ironically is busier now than it ever was. A section of the railway at Brockford has been recreated with original station buildings which capture the atmosphere of this quirky line. In 2012 the MSLR was awarded the Heritage Railway Association’s Interpretation Award.

Suffolk’s Museum of the Year in 2015 has teamed up with local historical event specialists Black Knight Historical to deliver what promises to be the best all round historical event of the summer with the East Anglian Living History Fayre. Ian Pycroft, owner of Black Knight, said: “This amazing event really will bring history alive! Visitors will be able to step back in time to meet ancestors all over the museum. The Women’s Land Army will be working the farm-, as they did during the Second World War, ladies from the Women’s Institute will be knitting for the war effort, and the Home Guard will protect us all from German invasion! All across the site, historical characters will delight and amaze you with their skills and knowledge. From Roman Legionaries to an audience with Queen Elizabeth I, William Shakespeare through to Viking warriors, falconry, music and dance, gunpowder weapons demonstrations, lectures from top local authors and speakers, and much more.” This special new event promises to be an unforgettable experience. WOMAN OF THE BIBLE – AN EXHIBITION OF QUILTS Stowmarket United Reformed Church is delighted to present an exhibition by Sew Spiritual – Women of the Bible from Thursday, September 29 until Sunday, October 2. Women of the Bible is the fifth annual exhibition from Sew Spiritual. There are 12 quilts featuring 15 women from both Old and New Testaments, including Mary Magdalene, Lois and Eunice, Jezebel, Esther and Ruth.

Today’s ‘Middy’ is not only a museum but runs regular steam trains and has a programme of carriage and wagon restoration complementing its efforts to recreate this slice of Edwardian England. Planning permission is currently being sought to extend the line to Blacksmith’s Green, continuing along the original trackbed. The additional length of line would significantly enhance the attraction of the ‘Middy ‘ experience for visitors. Restoration of the Hudswell Clarke number 1604, an 0-6-0 tank engine owned by the MSLR, is progressing well, but there is still major work to be completed. Work to construct a permanent engine and restoration shed is also well under way and will enable volunteers to work in a proper weatherproof environment for the restoration and repair of locomotives. During the summer of 2016 the restoration of the third Great Eastern Railway 4-wheel Victorian coach will be completed and this will return to traffic, enabling three coach trains to run for the first time since the re-opening of the MSLR. The luxury of the first class interior needs to be seen to be believed. A new booklet has recently been published which looks back at the first 25 years of the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum. In its 36 pages one can read of the very earliest days when all that was visible at the Brockford site was the old cattle dock, right through to the present day when steam trains run every Sunday until August 28 and Bank Holiday Monday, August 29. This is followed by our Steam Railway Gala on September 10 and 11 when up to four locomotives will be in steam. This colour booklet is on sale for only £3.95 from the Middy shop or by mail order. Please send a cheque for £4.65 payable to the ‘Mid-Suffolk Light Railway’ to The First 25 Years, MSLR, Brockford Station, Wetheringsett, Stowmarket IP14 5PW. To find out more about this fascinating railway, including operating dates, visit: www.mslr.org.uk

Each quilt is unique, different sizes and shapes, using a variety of textiles, stitches and stitching styles. All the quilts will reflect the individual member’s meditation and interpretation in textiles of the Bible passages. Sew Spiritual is a small group of East Anglian Christian women from various traditions who have joined together to explore their faith through the medium of textiles and making quilts. There will also be an opportunity to see the Edith Cavell quilts which were made to commemorate the centenary of her death and was one of the 2015 Norwich commemoration exhibitions. Admission is free. The exhibition is open from 10am-3pm on the first three day and will close after the 10.25am Sunday morning service.

OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET’S TALKING NEWSPAPER The annual general meeting of Stowmarket’s Talking Newspaper took place recently at the United Reformed Church. Attendees were joined by the Mayor of Stowmarket, Councillor Barry Humphries and the Mayor of Needham Market, Councillor Cy Stansfield. The treasurer, Roger Luckin, told the meeting that the funds were in good shape following contributions from listeners, the Woolpit Steam Rally and The Event Shop. Chairman John Webb informed the meeting of the death of David Hopgood who had been a Newstalk trustee since its formation. He said: “David, who always had Stowmarket’s interests at heart, had given valuable support to Newstalk over all those years.” The chairman then went on to ask for more public involvement in the talking newspaper. He said: “For over 32 years we have been well served by the excellent volunteers who have brought many different abilities to our organisation. It is now time for new ideas and I would invite anyone with a love of serving the community to consider assisting this small charity. We need editors to work with the existing team to produce a fortnightly edition of news and information from our local newspapers and other publications, and technicians with the digital knowledge to make a USB memory stick recording to send to those with visual impairment. We also need new committee members so that we are able to continue this valuable service.” Newstalk is a free service to anyone who is registered with sight problems and is produced from its studio at the church. Mr Webb thanked the

STOWMARKET SUGARCRAFT CLUB Our June meeting was very well attended with members and six visitors who we were very happy to welcome. Our speaker was Graham Weare from the Outrageous Cake Company in Ipswich. This was his first visit to us. Graham gave us a very informative demonstration using Bas relief techniques to create a two dimensional design on the side of a cake. We watched in awe as pieces of modelling paste, some cut out using a template and some shaped freehand, were placed into position and a

The Mayor of Stowmarket who presented long service certificates, thanked the group on behalf of those with sight loss and hoped that the valuable service would continue. lifelike eagle began to take shape before our eyes. There was something of interest for everyone present, whatever their ability. We hope Graham will visit us again. We were very pleased with the display we put in the church for the Queens birthday celebration. A big thank you to everyone who contributed. Our meeting is always on the second Monday of the month in St Mary’s Hall, Wolsey Road, Stowmarket at 7.30pm. Visitors and new members always welcome.

ENDING A COMMERCIAL LEASE EARLY In the course of running a business from leased commercial premises, there may well be a time when it becomes necessary to give consideration to how that lease might be brought to an end early. This might be because the business is doing well and larger premises are needed so that the business can expand, or on the other hand things might not be going so well and it’s time to call it a day and move on to something else. A commercial property lease will usually continue to the end of the fixed term unless a clause has been included within the lease to bring it to an end sooner. Such a clause is normally called a Break Clause, but also sometimes an option to determine. Usually, a Break Clause will set an official date in the lease – and therefore agreed from the outset – where the lease can be brought to an end early without either party facing a penalty for doing so on those grounds alone (though other costs may still be relevant, such as those in respect of repair obligations that are outstanding, or unpaid rent or service charge).

www.keepingintouchwith.com/stowmarket

Who may operate the Break Clause will depend on the wording – some may be operated by the landlord or the tenant, but some may be exercised by both. There may also be conditions that if they apply must be strictly adhered to. In any event, it is vital that a careful note of the date on which the Break Clause can be activated is made. Often, it will be for one date only and if the correct period of notice is not given, or if it has been given for the wrong day, then the right to bring the lease to an end might be lost. A very careful note should therefore be made of an important date such as this, and action taken well in advance wherever possible.

OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET LIONS Stowmarket Lions have broken all previous records with a fantastic £54,000 end of year total raised through their various fundraising activities. All of this money goes to Lions local charities and individuals in need. This figure includes the splendid totals raised in bucket collections for organisations such as the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, Marie Curie, MacMillan Cancer Support and RNLI Lifeboats.

ROTARY CLUB DONATES DICTIONARIES TO LOCAL SCHOOLS

Fundraising chairman Lion Kev Parker said: “Our fundraising takes on many faces with charity boxing dinners (having held two this year for the first time), The Sportsman’s Dinner, The Charity Art Show & Sale, our charity bike ride (see below), the Terry Cook Memorial Golf Day, our Santa Sleigh, a jazz evening at the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts and, last but by no means least, our very successful pig races. Without the support of fellow Lions, wives, partners, families and friends, we would not produce such exceptional results.” Stowmarket Lions Charity Bike Ride is on track to equal last years total of £3,760 towards MacMillan Cancer Support and Lions charities. The ride took place on Sunday, June 19, which of course was also Father’s Day. The majority of riders rode the 100k challenge, exactly a third the 50k intermediate route and the remaining four per cent completed the family 25k route, between them cycling the equivalent of 12 times the length of the country from Lands End to John o’ Groats.

(l-r) Rodney Tate, Daniel Pettitt (Freeman Community Primary), Emma Jones (Crawford Primary), Russell Clarke (Combs Ford Primary), Andrew Berry (Old Newton Primary), Rotary President Peter Andrews The Rotary Club of Stowmarket Gipping Valley recently presented dictionaries to Combs Ford Primary School, Crawfords C of E VCP School, Helmingham Community Primary School, Old Newton C of E VCP School, Stowupland Freeman Primary School and Mendlesham Primary School as part of the Dictionary 4 Life project. Dictionary 4 Life (D4L) promotes British English and encourages children to widen their vocabularies and consequently improve their life chances. The project locally was initiated by President Elect Rodney Tate who liaised with the participating schools. On behalf of the other school heads, Russell Clarke, headteacher of Combs Ford Primary, said that they were very grateful to the Rotary club for the valuable resource which the dictionaries provided for their pupils.

Three generations of the Griggs Family took part and cycled a massive 400k between them. Eight-year-old Sophie and her mum Tracey cycled the 50k intermediate route with Sophie beating her personal best by completing her longest and fastest cycle ride. Grandfather Geoff, father David and 12-year-old Oliver Griggs cycled the 100k challenge route and also set new records with Oliver and his dad beating their average speed and overall timings from last year. Oliver, David and Geoff all belong to West Suffolk Wheelers and triathlon club based in Bury St Edmunds. We also had a strong contingent from Stowmarket Striders, a running club with some 350 members.

The Rotary Club of Stowmarket Gipping Valley is always looking for new members (male and female) who are interested in good fellowship and service within the local community. They meet at the Cedars Hotel in Stowmarket on Thursday evenings. If you would like to give them a try please contact the membership secretary Margaret Woollam: 07836 371500 / margaretwoollam@yahoo.co.uk www.gippingvalleyrotary.org / Facebook

THE JUBILEE LADIES CHOIR

STOWMARKET & DISTRICT MONDAY CLUB

At our last rehearsal before the summer break, The Ladies Jubilee Choir presented a cheque for £1,500 to community fundraiser Hannah Walker of EACH. Hannah said that the donation would be used to fund music therapy sessions.

The club continues through the summer with a varied programme planned.

The money came from part of the pot that accumulates over the year from the profits of our concerts. We also donated £500 to the Macmillan Cancer Support (Woolverstone Wish) Appeal. The photograph shows our chairman, Di Balaam, presenting the cheque to Hannah. It’s official – singing is good for you and our choir enjoys singing at rehearsals and sharing our music at concerts, and sharing our profits with charities makes it even more enjoyable. We begin our autumn session in August when we will start work on some new pieces and as we get closer to Christmas we will be preparing for our Christmas concerts. The choir meets at the United Reformed Church in Stowmarket on Tuesday evenings. We are a friendly bunch of ladies and always welcome new members. You are welcome to come along and give us a try for a couple of weeks. Contact Di Balaam on 01449 736374. You can follow the choir on Facebook

We had a very successful party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. It was organised on the theme of a street party with the bunting and crowns made previously very much in evidence. We had games such as pass-the-parcel and enjoyed a supper organised by Janet and a cake made for the occasion by Thelma, two of our helpers. Our picture this month shows them cutting the cake. Stowmarket Concert Band paid us a visit with rousing music and a chance for some of our members to try their hand at conducting. A very good evening. We also had an evening playing Hoy and another when all the board games and cards were brought out. This is always a popular evening. We now have a country and western evening with The Muleskinners to look forward to. This will be a lively night. We also have a barbecue planned for a few weeks’ time. We are a club for adults with learning difficulties and meet each Monday from 7.30-9.30pm at the Community Hub in Crown Street, Stowmarket. We are run entirely by volunteers and new members and helpers are always very welcome. If you would like further information, please contact us on 01449 672123 or just come along on a Monday evening.

OUT & ABOUT GROWING GUIDING IN STOWMARKET

STOWMARKET AIR CADETS

5th Stowmarket Brownies are looking for some new adult leaders to join their team of current helpers and to assist Brown Owl. Why not visit a session to see how you could make a difference in young women’s lives and perhaps change your own?

1331 (Stowmarket) Squadron marked the 75th anniversary of the Air Training Corps at Norwich Cathedral with a momentous parade through the city.

Brownies make new friends, enjoy learning new skills, take part in adventures and most importantly of all, have fun! Guiding will provide any training necessary and volunteering can help improve your CV. All helpers aged 18+ must provide two referees and complete an enhanced DBS check. If you are interested in joining or wish to find out more about Girlguiding, please contact us or visit: www.girlguiding.org.uk/interested Stowmarket Commissioner Anne Richardson: anne.richardson7@tesco.net County Outreach Worker Jo Dixon: jo.d@btinternet.com

On Sunday, July 3, 300 cadets and 100 staff from Norfolk and Suffolk Wing Air Cadets gathered in the beautiful city of Norwich to commemorate their 75th anniversary. Meeting at Carrow Road, the cadets practiced their parade drill and marching before transferring to Norwich Cathedral for the formal parade and commemoration of the 75 years. Cadets and staff from 29 squadrons across Norfolk and Suffolk came together with their Standards also on parade. They marched through the cathedral grounds, saluting the honorary guest GP Cpt Nigel Gorman, Regional Commandant, before heading into the cathedral for a service of thanksgiving.

Wednesday, August 3: Class of ‘63 – Earl Stonham Charity School by Pip Wright

Following the service, the cadets joined guests of honour, parents, friends and past and present members of the Wing for refreshments on the green at the side of the picturesque cathedral. The parade was a rare opportunity for so many cadets to march together. It will be a day they remember for the rest of their lives.

The class of ‘63 was composed of just eight poor boys who, in the year of 1763, came together to be taught at Earl Stonham Charity School by Thomas Warren. It would be a defining moment in all their lives, as this story shows. Using a wealth of archived material, Pip has drawn upon what history has left behind to tell the remarkable story of these boys and their families. This and many other books by Pip will be on sale.

Officer Commanding 1331 (Stowmarket) Squadron Flt Lt Paula Houghton said: “I remember parading as a cadet for the 50th anniversary of the Corps and it is a real privilege to be back here for the 75th as a staff member. It has been a long and tiring day, but an amazing opportunity for these young people to be a part of something so memorable. Once again they made me proud of them and our organisation.”

Pip has been one of our regular speakers and we are looking forward to his talk at this, our fifth birthday meeting. There will be cake!

The cadets have certainly been showing off their marching and drill skills this year, having recently also attended Suffolk Armed Forces Day, held on June 25. The cadets gathered with other military organisations at Red Gables, Stowmarket before marching to Pikes Meadow for a formal ceremony.

STOWUPLAND LOCAL HISTORY GROUP

Wednesday, September 7: The Incendiary Fires of 1844 in Stowupland by Neil Langridge The agricultural labourer’s life during the 19th century could be far from a rural idyll. Issues such as food shortages, unemployment and the new union workhouses were a cause for protest. This could take the form of fire-starting and an outbreak in 1844 was focused on the Stowmarket area. Three of these fires occurred on farms in Stowupland and much damage was done. One of the labourers responsible was transported to Australia. We meet at 7.30pm in Stowupland Village Hall, IP14 4BQ where there is ample parking. Visitors are always welcome and refreshments are available. Admission is £1 for members, £3 for non-members. For more information, please contact Judy Clarke: 01449 615386

STOWMARKET LOCAL HISTORY GROUP Monday, August 15: Even More Stories from the Tower (Bury St Edmunds) by Horrie Parsons Monday, September 19: Stowmarket’s Hidden Gems: A look at some of the disguised timber-framed buildings by Steve and Sue Williams. ROYAL NAVAL ASSOCIATION, STOWMARKET Following on from its successful commissioning, the Stowmarket branch of the Royal Naval Association held its inaugural meeting in late June. It was agreed that future branch meetings will take place on the fourth Tuesday of each month at The Royal British Legion on Tavern Street. The branch is keen to put together a programme of events, speakers and social evenings and has agreed on the purchase of a branch standard that, once dedicated, will be paraded with those of the RBL and other associations at future events. The branch will publish details of the formal dedication ceremony when the date has been set. All will be welcome. One date already firmly in the diary is a social evening on Friday, October 21 to celebrate Trafalgar Night. This important date in the Navy calendar celebrates the Royal Navy’s victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, led by Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. Stowmarket RNA will host this evening at the Royal British Legion Club and will publish details nearer the date.

For further details contact Jeannette Baldry: 01449 675271

New members are always welcome and you need not have served with the Senior Service to join. Do come and meet us.

OUT & ABOUT CHAPS – OUR LOCAL MEN’S HEALTH CHARITY CHAPS is a men’s health charity dedicated to raising awareness of men’s health problems. Why? Because UK men’s health statistics are so poor in comparison to both women and our European neighbours across the whole spectrum of disease. Sixty-thousand UK men of working age die prematurely every year at a rate one and a half times that for women. The causes are well known: heart disease, smoking, cancers, diabetes, suicide and risk-taking behaviour to name but a few. There are numerous health programmes devoted to women’s care, but few equivalent services exist for men, while men themselves remain largely unaware of health issues and reluctant to use the services that do exist. For instance, NHS health checks aimed at detecting the top seven causes of premature death are offered to men aged 40-74, yet less than 50% are actually taken up! Furthermore, although prostate cancer kills 11,000 UK men annually, there is no national screening programme and only 8% of UK men avail themselves of the PSA prostate cancer screening test available to them via the NHS. Our objective is to raise awareness on the premise that if a man knows what can go wrong, he at least will have the knowledge to make an informed choice as to whether to take preventative action. Over the last five years CHAPS has run men’s health days, typically at football stadia, where we have provided free tests to men for aortic aneurysm screening, heart disease and stroke risk assessment, diabetes, skin cancer and prostate cancer screening. At ITFC last October 138 men attended and we even had a team from the Medical Detection Dogs collecting urine samples from men having prostate checks to train their dogs to recognise prostate cancer! So far we know 11/94 prostate checks were abnormal and one man with an unknown aneurysm underwent potentially life-saving surgery within two weeks of the event. Another first on the day was a successful seminar, Mental Health in The Workplace, run by Suffolk User Forum, Suffolk Mind and Picasso HR.

SUFFOLK REGIMENT OLD COMRADES ASSOCIATION, STOWMARKET BRANCH The chairman welcomed 18 members to the June meeting where the final numbers for the July BBQ and Cromer Pier Show in August were confirmed. We will be attending the Minden Day Parade and get together at the old barracks in Bury St Edmunds on July 31. The Standard was at the memorial gates in Stowmarket for the service to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. The meeting concluded with a talk on the history of Punch and Judy which took us back to our childhood days. The Stowmarket branch of the Suffolk Regiment Old Comrades meets on the last Wednesday of the month. You would be very welcome to join us if you served in the Royal Anglians, Royal Norfolk or Suffolk regiment or as an associate member if you served in the army. For more information contact D King: 01449 675318

LADIES WEDNESDAY CLUB A group of ladies from all walks of life meet in the main hall at Stowmarket United Reformed Church at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday evening of the month. The subscription is £1.50 per meeting or £12 for the year. We have excellent speakers who give talks on varied subjects ranging from bee keeping to a world challenge trip, followed by refreshments. You will be assured of a warm welcome by the current chairperson Jayne Wood.

At our last event in Clacton in December an exceptionally high attendance thoroughly endorsed our raison d’être. For instance, 21 heart checks and eight prostate checks were abnormal while eight skin cancers were diagnosed. These results typify our activity and overall in 2015 we performed a total of 1,944 clinical tests for 814 men at eight events. We are concentrating our activity in Essex and Suffolk on the principle that ‘charity begins at home’ and in recognition of considerable local unmet health needs. Sadly we have all lost friends to preventable and curable diseases, but through local support at local events we can make a difference. We are therefore encouraging male orientated groups such as Rotary, Masons and Lions and employers of male workforces to commission us to provide smaller, private health check events for the members or employees. To find out more, please check our website at www.chaps.uk.com or contact us at: chris.booth@chaps.uk.com / info@chaps.uk.com / 07734 747854 This year’s event at Ipswich Town Football Club on Thursday, November 3 will offer the following health checks: • Aneurysm screening • Cardiovascular risk assessment – your risk of a heart attack or stroke over the next 10 years • Diabetes screening • Skin cancer • Prostate • Physiotherapy, blood pressure and BMI checks The day is co-ordinated by CHAPS and the clinical services will be provided by Onelife Suffolk, Ipswich Hospital, the Suffolk Nuffield Hospital, Day Lewis Pharmacy and the Co-op (hearing tests).

OUT & ABOUT / SCHOOLS HERITAGE OPEN AFTERNOON AT ORCHARD BARN Orchard Barn is a living history project where we use natural building materials (earth and trees) and a traditional approach to construction. Subsoil has been used as a building material throughout the world for centuries. In mid Suffolk there are still many houses and farm buildings constructed from clay lump. Building with earth is part of our heritage. At Orchard Barn we have all the materials we need to build a wall directly under our feet, and we like to keep fit naturally. It’s a great combination that’s lots of fun. Just recently we have been making clay lump blocks for our new craft room. We start the process with a spade. Currently we are improving drainage of a ditch and ‘harvesting’ the clay as we go. Then we tread chopped straw in until mixed well. Clay lump mix is tamped down into a wooden mould, then turned out and dried in the sun for three-four weeks. A simple, but effective heritage building practice that is making a comeback – one spade-full at a time. OPEN AFTERNOON If you would like to see how we make clay lump blocks or wattle and daub, then come to our open afternoon between 2-4.30pm on Saturday, September 10. It’s part of the national campaign to show the rich and diverse heritage of our buildings. During the afternoon we will be doing a presentation about the restoration of Orchard Barn, a Community Interest Company run project that has involved more than 1,600 people in the use of local trees and earth. Come and see what we have achieved and how. For more information visit www.orchardbarn.org.uk or phone 01473 658193 / 07766 054042. New volunteers always welcome.

The Oddfellows were pleased to present a cheque for £4,833 to Mid Suffolk Voluntary Organisation Forum at Red Gables, money raised by the Gipping Branch in Stowmarket and the East Anglian Group Conference in support of the Red Gables Garden Project. The cheque was presented to chair of trustees Tony Fowler by past chairman of the Oddfellows Keith Adamson at a garden party on Wednesday, June 15 in the grounds of Red Gables. The garden party was to honour the Queen’s 90th birthday and to celebrate National Picnic Week. David Randall, local branch secretary and director of the Oddfellows, introduced the Mayor of Stowmarket, Barry Humphries MBE who expressed his gratitude to the Oddfellows for their continued support in the local community at Red Gables. The Oddfellows, a not for profit friendly society founded over 200 years ago, has branches around the country. The Gipping branch in Stowmarket meets socially in the Old Library at Red Gables. Social activities include coach trips. New members are most welcome. For further details please visit www.oddfellows.co.uk or contact David: 01206 330962 / david.randall@oddfellows.co.uk

SCHOOLS / SPORT STOWMARKET HIGH SCHOOL

SCORPION MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY

Young people not engaged in politics? Certainly not the case at Stowmarket High. After months of campaigning, visits from Jo Churchill MP and Vicky Forde MEP, public speaking training and trips to parliament, students at Stowmarket High School set up their own polling station for the EU referendum one day before the national vote.

Scorpion juniors recently demonstrated their karate skills at Combs Fete. A good turnout of students kept the large audience entertained with sword work, sparring, kata (patterns), kicking and self defence. A big thank you to senior instructor Mel Warmsley, Master Andy Lewis, Master Dave Fell, Lilirose Fell, Kiera Holder and Lucy Durrant for helping to organise the display and looking after the juniors.

Each student in the school received their own polling card and were able to experience what it was like to vote in an actual polling station. The students were among the first in the country to get their unofficial votes registered. Almost 600 students cast their votes in the school referendum and showed their faith in a Britain in Europe by voting – by the very narrowest of margins – to stay in Europe and reject the ‘Britain out’ message.

Nearly 150 juniors and seniors took part in our second interclub tournament. Fantastic martial arts skills were displayed in universal karate and tae kwon do sparring, kickboxing, muay thai and grappling. We have the third set of interclubs in October. We have a great number of members (nearly 50) taking part in the Stowmarket Striders Golden Mile charity run in September and a brave team of seniors running, swimming and biking in a half triathlon in October, also to raise money for charity. We are pleased to offer all new members one month free training. Please visit our websites and Facebook pages for further details. www.scorpionacademy.co.uk www.ufkka.org.uk Contact: scorpionacademy@live.co.uk / Mark JR Trent, 07708 644162

The leader of the Remain campaign, Ben Sitton 15, said: “A lot of work went into the campaign. Although I am delighted with the result, it was the opportunity to share my passion for politics with fellow schoolmates that really made the whole thing special.” Assistant headteacher Katy Farrow, who helped the students coordinate the whole process, said: “It has been a privilege to work with a group of students who were so engaged in the political process. It was a tightly fought contest, and a powerful learning experience.” She went to say: “Interestingly, while younger students in Years 7 and 8 voted to leave, students in Year 9 were undecided, split exactly 50/50 on whether to stay or leave. It was votes from older students who very narrowly carried the day, with Years 10 and 12 eventually swaying the overall result by voting to remain.” RECORD BREAKING READING On Friday, June 24 Year 7 students joined forces with more than 70 other schools around the country in a bid to break the world record for the Largest Reading Lesson. As part of the celebrations for National Book Day, John Carpenter (Head of English) and Vaughan Freeman (English Teacher) entertained the students with their lively recital of the first chapter of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The event formed part of the school’s drive to promote reading and improve literacy. Hayley Frankland, associate headteacher and literacy lead, said: “We’ve had an entertaining morning with our readers truly captivating our students. Fostering a love of reading is at the heart of what we do in school and is pivotal in securing academic success. I am pleased that our friends in the local community have supported us today in bearing witness to this potentially once-in-a-lifetime activity.” The event was supported by Gerald Brown, school governor, Ursula Scott, manager of Stowmarket Library and Matthew Shenton, Suffolk Libraries Literacy Ambassador.

AIKIDO SEMINAR We are always encouraged to attend seminars in order to learn more and widen our practice. This time it was a day-course at our organisation’s HQ in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. I always find something of benefit, not just from the different instructors, this time Sensei Tyas and Sensei Griffin, but also from those I train with on the day. It’s those little pointers someone gives during practice that slowly add up to a better technique (although at times it feels painfully slow getting there). It was interesting to see the different style and emphasis of instruction between morning and afternoon sessions. Sensei Griffin took the morning, and this (for me) gave insights into blending both as uke (thrown) and nage (thrower). The afternoon was beneficial in practicing countering techniques, something that takes some getting used to in changing roles between uke and nage through a sequence of techniques. It also helped in thinking about weakness in one’s techniques allowing an opportunity to be countered. The final practice was dedicated to sacrifice throws, as with all new experiences a bit of uncertainty at first, but on realising it ends up in the more familiar falls, then it all becomes quite fun. After a long day, I think I had earned a chilled beer when I made it home. Being a bit of a lightweight I didn’t train on the Sunday evening. Maybe next Sunday I can fit in that extra hour and a half in the evening. For anyone interested in trying the Japanese martial art of Aikido, newcomers are always welcome. The first lesson is completely free and classes run at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre from 7pm on Sundays and 8.15pm on Thursdays. For more information, please email aikido@precepts.co.uk or visit: www.satomikai.co.uk

SPORT love.golf©

– NEW ALL-FEMALE GROUP COACHING AT STOWMARKET GOLF CENTRE

SALVATION ARMY FOOTBALL CLUB

Women looking to take up a new outdoor activity with friends are being promised a surprising experience at love.golf©, a new all-female coaching programme at Stowmarket Golf Centre starting on August 18. love.golf has been specially developed for women, with a unique approach focused on coaching while playing the game as a group, rather than simply hitting balls on a practice range. According to PGA Golf Professional Joe Cardy, love.golf is helping to transform the game’s outdated image and welcome a new generation of female golfers who may not have considered trying golf before. Joe Cardy said: “The great thing about love.golf is that it provides an environment for women to discover, learn and improve skills. Customers frequently say they are surprised at their achievements and the sense of self-confidence and empowerment that comes with this. love.golf is ideal for new golfers. All the equipment is provided, you can wear jeans and trainers and you don’t have to be a club member, or even have played before. It’s relaxed, welcoming and probably not at all what you think golf is like.” love.golf was launched in 2015 on the back of an academic study at the University of Birmingham looking at how golf is taught to women. It also follows a nationwide survey that found more than 640,000 women said they would be ‘very interested’ in taking up golf. The all-inclusive love.golf programme costs £95 per person and includes six weekly sessions with PGA Professional Joe Cardy at Stowmarket Golf Centre. The groups are welcome to meet socially and encouraged to play and practice together between coaching sessions. For more information about love.golf at Stowmarket Golf Centre, please visit: www.love.golf

STOWMARKET TENNIS CLUB Everything is happening down at the club. We’ve just held our most successful ever open day with lots of new faces coming along to try some free tennis and snap up discounted membership. The club was full for three hours and a lot of fun was had by a lot of people. If you couldn’t make it down on the day then pop along and see us sometime – there’s bound to be a few courts playing with something to watch and members to talk with. The club teams are just about finished with their summer league matches. Fortunes have been mixed, but our top men’s team has been battling in the 1st division which is a great achievement for the club. We’ve managed to get a couple of new players into that squad which bodes very well for the future. Ladies and mixed teams have also had their share of wins and losses with one or two final places going down to the last match. Places for junior summer camp are filling so if you’d like to take part get in touch with me. We’re running a week at the start of the summer break and another week nearer the end. The time in between has week long tournaments at Ipswich, Culford, Frinton, Framlingham and Felixstowe so there’s plenty to see if you’re out and about. See you on court. NEEDHAM MARKET BOWLS CLUB Since I last wrote we have had to endure a great deal of rain which has resulted in more matches than normal being postponed. Hopefully we are now in a period of more settled weather and the greens will dry out and speed up. Our teams are having some success this season with the Tuesday A team challenging for top spot with eight wins in 10 matches, Tuesday B are recovering from a slow start winning their last two games by seven points to zero. With eight wins from 11 matches the Wednesday team are also in a challenging position in their league. Our Thursday night ‘development’ team is doing ok and providing our new bowlers with an introduction to league bowling. We have also progressed to the semi-finals of the Marie Curie with two very good wins so far. Wednesday roll-up (social) bowling at 2pm is still popular and offers bowling, tea/coffee and biscuits for 30p, so if you fancy a go you will be made most welcome. If you wish to speak to someone, contact numbers are listed below. Notice to members: We are holding a Triples Competition on Sunday, August 28 with a barbeque. Get your names on the list as soon as possible so that a schedule can be worked out and a good time can be had by all. Pat Hadden, 01743 831308 / Alistair Bailie, 01449 720759

Hopefully by the time you read this, the way forward in political and national terms will be clearer with bridges being constructed so that dialogue and reconciliation can take place, rather than walls being built which will create division. During the Sunday service here at Christchurch the other week we were invited to place a Lego brick in a broken down building in an attempt to reconstruct and repair it. This was a symbolic gesture as we were encouraged to think about broken relationships which needed healing. But it’s not enough to think symbolically about real, almost tangible hurt and pain caused by the situation the country finds itself in. Not when each one of us has the potential to do something positive. It may require nothing more than a smile, a friendly hello or an enquiry after someone’s wellbeing. I’m sure you have heard the phrases ‘Love your neighbour’ and ‘Do to others as you would have them do to you’ (or as Charles Kingsley put it The Water Babies by naming one of his characters Mrs Do-As-You-WouldBe-Done-By). Those are all pretty good mottos for life! I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer; it will be soon be time for the Rio Olympics and for the new football season to start – let’s hope for good things! The Rev Mary Playford CHRISTCHURCH CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL This year Christchurch is planning something different on December 2, 3 and 4. We would like to fill our church with a Christmas display and we are inviting individuals, families, groups and businesses to take part. There will be display areas for Marvellous Mangers (nativity/crib scenes), Stupendous Stars (stars), Holy Heralds (angels) and Tremendous Trees (unusual representations of Christmas trees no taller than 60cms).

I’m writing this in the wake of the Referendum result and in the midst of what seems to be utter political turmoil. To cap it all England have just exited the Euro 2016 Championships.

We will also have a children’s corner where children can draw and display their own Christmas pictures, look at books or listen to a storyteller. Refreshments will be available for you to sit and enjoy among the displays.

As an Andy Murray fan I await the Wimbledon Championships with immense trepidation! I think perhaps it’s time to come clean and confess that puppy training has contained the command ‘Leave’ in abundance – perhaps I’m responsible for all the departures.

If you have, or can make, cribs, stars, angels or trees that fit our categories above and you would like to enter them in our Christmas Festival, please contact Sheila Norris for more details: 01449 720871 / sheila_norris@hotmail.co.uk

THE ALPHA COURSE

MESSY CHURCH AT ST MARY’S

The Salvation Army, Violet Hill Road, Stowmarket invite you to The Alpha Course.

Why not come to our Messy Church on Sunday, August 7 at St Mary’s Church, Combs with bacon rolls and coffee, tea and juice from 10.45am and an 11am service?

Got any questions as to the meaning of life? Is there a God and if so does he care? What can religion do for me?

This month’s theme is The Women at the Well and we are making a big mosaic picture of a woman at a well, decorating edible well buns, making clay water jars, and finishing with a Bible story.

Separate courses will run over eight weeks on a Friday morning and Monday evening at 10am and 8pm respectively commencing on Friday 9 and Monday 12 September.

If this sounds like fun, come and join us. All welcome.

You have nothing to lose, but everything to gain! For further information contact Major Bev: 01449 614133 / Beverley.robilliard@salvationarmy.org.uk
