A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I went along to an e-safety workshop for parents at Jack’s school last week and I’m still shaking my head in horror. I’m relatively tech-savvy, or at least I though I was, but I’m not what they call a ‘digital native’, i.e. a person born or brought up in the age of digital technology and familiar with computers and the internet from an early age. In fact I can remember being introduced to a fax machine in my first year at university and being utterly amazed that we could send a sheet of paper from one side of the room to the other! Those of us who aren’t digital natives acknowledge the wonder of digital technology and most of us use it daily, some more effectively that others, but I don’t suppose I will ever truly appreciate how ‘normal’ it is for natives like Jack. That said it is my responsibility to protect him from the negative aspects of digital communication ­– such as the possibility that someone could be watching him through the webcam on my iPad using a remote access tool! How creepy is that?

SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND

Taking what I’d learned at the e-safety session I went into Settings on the iPad and set all the appropriate restrictions. I also downloaded a child-friendly version of YouTube called YouTube Kids and a childfriendly browser. Jack hasn’t actually noticed the difference yet, but I know he’s not going to be bombarded with inappropriate content or accidentally follow links to sites which aren’t age appropriate. For now he’s safe, but kids being kids, I know he will challenge the boundaries and find ways to circumvent my efforts to control his digital adventures so I have to stay one step ahead at all times. Ironically there are some very useful websites you can visit to learn more about setting restrictions and understanding how young people use social media.

The e-safety session ended with a question: “Would you abandon your children in central London unsupervised and unaccompanied?”

This play centres on the day the American Air Force pulled into town and changed the course of history, both locally and nationally. It was a time when Yanks, as the English called them, had only ever been seen on the big screen, so when they turned up in smart uniforms, with silver tongues and money to match, the effect was electric.

The GIs arrived to find villages without electricity, women without husbands, and bars with warm beer. The culture clash would produce sparks.

Nylons, Hershey bars and jitterbugging to swing bands in the local village hall all feature but there was another side to this shared history – a tale of segregation and of rural communities turned upside down. Kids being forced to grow up before their time, friendships forged and then blown apart and outsiders learning to live among the locals.

NEWS CREETING ST MARY’S CHURCH ROOF FUNDRAISER Parishioners and friends of Creeting St Mary’s Church are working hard to raise money for their much needed new roof and are planning a truly Grand Draw on April 23 at 7.30pm in the Diamond Jubilee Hall during a rather good cheese and wine evening. Tickets will be £10 per head.

There are 40 wonderful prizes to be won including a weekend for two at The Brudenell Hotel in Aldeburgh, afternoon tea for two at Hintlesham Hall, a family ticket for a visit to Colchester Zoo, lunch for two at The Highway Man, a river cruise for two on the Orwell Lady, a John Lewis voucher for £50, a wooden case containing three bottles of Champagne and many more exciting items.

FUR-EVER PETS NOW OPEN IN STATION YARD Needham Market’s new pet shop, Fur-ever Pets in Station Yard, had its grand opening on Saturday, January 30. Throughout the day a continuous stream of friends, customers and well wishes came down to see shop owners Heather and Dave.

Fur-ever Pets stocks a large animal foods, pet accessories, and very soon small animals include gerbils, rats, guinea hamsters.

NEEDHAM MARKET LIBRARY A book sale is being held outside the library on March 26 from 10am-4pm. If you have any good condition books you would like to donate to raise money for the library please bring them in.

From 11am-noon on Thursday mornings from March 3 we will be holding a Job Club drop-in session where we can help you to search online for jobs and with CV preparation.

SALVATION ARMY’S NEW EMERGENCY RESPONSE UNIT The Salvation Army’s new emergency response unit to support emergency service personnel and the community was launched in January.

The Salvation Army’s previous emergency response vehicle attended 210 events and emergencies, providing hot food and drink to emergency personnel such as the fire service, the police and the council’s emergency response team. This saw Salvation Army volunteers and officers serving those working on the front line and the community in emergencies from large fires to hunts for missing people, floods or even providing support for people at sporting events.

The replacement vehicle is funded by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service and The Salvation Army after the previous van became unreliable after 13 years of use. The vehicle is based at Stowmarket Fire Station.

Mike Baker, The Salvation Army’s Emergency Response Co-ordinator for Suffolk, said: “The Salvation Army has a long history of supporting the community in times of need. People think it is God’s work with its sleeves rolled up. We are in partnership with the fire services – they support the community and we are pleased to support

them. As a church and a charity The Salvation Army is dedicated to providing compassionate support, a listening ear and practical help to those in need in the community, and see our support of emergency personnel and the local community at emergencies as a vital part of our work.”

Since 1978, The Salvation Army’s emergency response team in Suffolk has supported 28,685 emergency personnel and members of the public, served more than 51,331 hot and cold drinks, made 3,487 loaves of bread into sandwiches and served 2,300 hot meals.

Major Derek Jones, The Salvation Army’s Divisional Commander for its Anglia division, said: “The dedication of Salvation Army volunteers and officers in this emergency services support is a real asset. They respond and serve at any time of the day or night to support emergency services personnel working at the front line with hot drinks, soup, sandwiches or hot dogs. The emergency services often put their lives at risks to support people in the community during fires and floods, and we look to do what we can to make their time easier while serving, while also supporting the local community.”

NEWS MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCILLORS MIKE NORRIS AND WENDY MARCHANT

LOCAL FLORIST HOPING TO RAISE £4,000 FOR CHARITY Lucy Ransome of Barham has donned her running shoes and embarked on a challenging training programme in preparation for this year’s 26.2 mile London Marathon. This will be Lucy’s first marathon and she will join approximately 36,000 other runners as they pound the streets of London on April 24.

Lucy hopes to raise around £4,000 for the NSPCC and the critical care unit at Ipswich Hospital, the latter being a personal motivation after one of her closest friends spent four weeks on the ward before unfortunately loosing her battle.

Lucy said: “The support, care and courage of the staff was amazing and they were there 24 hours, seven days a week.”

Lucy hopes to turn a huge negative into a positive and by raising funds she hopes to help others in a similar life threatening/life changing situation.

As well as running her busy floristry business, Lucy Jane Flowers at Debenham, she is also working hard organising fundraising activities prior to the marathon. One of these is a Charity Family Night at Claydon Community Centre on March 19, 7-11pm.

The evening will be great fun for all the family and will include a disco, ploughman’s supper and a raffle with some fantastic prizes generously donated by local businesses. The list of prizes include a mini cruise for two to Honfleur from Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, afternoon tea at The Limes in Needham Market and a round of golf for four at Fynn Valley Golf Club, plus so many more fabulous prizes. BOSMERE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS SUCCESSFUL BURNS NIGHT Bosmere Liberal Democrats had a very successful Burns Night on Sunday, January 24 at the home of District Councillor Wendy Marchant and £238.50 was raised for Bosmere Branch funds. Entertainment was provided by Kate and Steve Dines and there were generous servings of Scotch Broth, haggis, tatties and neeps. Bosmere Branch Secretary David Payne devised and conducted the quiz on a Scottish theme, which was won by Steve Dines.

MONEY FOR NEEDHAM MARKET Mike and Wendy are pleased to give an award to the following organisations from their one-off Locality Award: Needham Market Internet Cafe, Needham Market Parish Church Roof Fund, Needham Market Cricket Club,Needham Market Football Academy, Needham Market Phoenix Football Club and the Beehive Nursery which is used

by Needham Market families. Mike and Wendy received applications totalling £27,750 against the total fund of £10,000 (£5,000 each), so obviously careful consideration was necessary and it was not possible to allocate the full amount requested. They said: “We have done our best with the funds we had available to satisfy all those who needed the money for their well deserved activities.”

RESIDENTIAL FLATS PROPOSED ON LION BARN INDUSTRIAL ESTATE Mike and Wendy requested this proposal to come to Mid Suffolk’s Planning Committee because it would be completely out of character.

Mid Suffolk’s own Economic Development Department gave a whole list of planning reasons why the proposed increased residential development would be in conflict with the existing industrial commercial uses on the Lion Barn Industrial Estate.

The existing businesses themselves (Brockford Accident Repairs, Kay & Pell, Hi Spec Powder Coatings Ltd, Needham Market Fabrications Ltd, RSA Geotechnice, BTS Group Ltd, J.S. Page Motor Engineers, CH Air & Pump Services Ltd and Maintain Power Service Ltd) all objected to a block of 11 residential flats on an industrial estate. Nearby residents in Pinecroft Way and Lime Tree Close had great concerns about overlooking and the overbearing effect of a three-storey dwelling opposite them, plus increased traffic on an already busy road of Lion Lane and parking considerations. There is the possibility of flooding because the nearby Coddenham Road is repeatedly flooded.

It is an anomaly that there is already one residential house in the middle of an industrial estate in the first place. This house would be demolished in order to build the flats – one individual house is very different to a three-storey block of 11 flats. Very many years ago Mid Suffolk bought Lion Barn Farm which included a house and the old mortuary, which is now used for storage by Mid Suffolk’s countryside team at Needham Lake. Mid Suffolk used the Lion Lane end of the then ‘farm’ as their depot for the dust bin collection vehicles when they did their own bin emptying. The house was used for the foreman to live in. The whole of the original Lion Barn Farm is now designated as Lion Barn Industrial Estate for commercial and industrial use. A small office development on this site would be much more appropriate than a block of 11 flats.

To sum up, we agreed with the town council, the businesses on the Lion Barn and the nearby residents in Pinecroft Way and Limetree Close and strongly recommended that this application be refused.

NEWS CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE Our annual Easter Bunny Chocolate Bingo is on Saturday, March 5. Please get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. It’s not your normal bingo! As many of you may know, the children arrive with only the clothes they are wearing. We are busy collecting ‘nearly new’ items which we give to the children at a clothing party the day after arrival. They take clothes not only for themselves but also for siblings at home. If you have any clothing suitable for ages six to 13 that you would like to donate we would be extremely grateful. OUT & ABOUT MUSEUM OF EAST ANGLIAN LIFE

BRAVO THEATRE WORKSHOPS Local performing arts students were celebrating after a second round of excellent exam results.

The students, who attend Bravo Theatre Workshops in Stowmarket, took exams in acting and reciting verse offered by LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts), and all received Merits and Distinctions, with one group achieving 100%!

Their Ipswich-based LAMDA teacher, Tara Fields, said: “We are so proud of them all.

These students have only been studying for just

over a year, and to achieve marks in the eighties and nineties is amazing, but I’ve never heard of anyone receiving 100% before. LAMDA is a great way for students to gain in confidence, improve in their schoolwork and become better communicators.”

Bravo Theatre Workshops offer a range of performing arts classes, including LAMDA, in the Stowmarket and Newmarket areas.

STOWMARKET AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB

Our third open competition on January 11 was judged by Peter Espley and as usual he gave a comprehensive critique of the entries. The annual Tripod Competition between Framlingham, Wymondham and hosts Stowmarket took place on January 25. The judge, Brian Carlick LRPS, gave good critique and was generally impressed with the standard of the entries, eight DPIs and eight prints from each club. We failed to beat the invited clubs with Wymondham coming first with 294 points, Framlingham second with 272.5 and Stowmarket third with 269.5 points. The evening was, as usual, a bit of a social event with a buffet provided by Stowmarket.

Join in the Easter Egg Hunt around the museum’s beautiful 75 acre site, have a go at our seedling workshops in the Walled Garden, feed the spring lambs and don’t forget to pay a visit to the museum’s animals. Check out the pygmy goats and cows, visit Tulip the Suffolk Punch horse or take a trip to rabbit world.

For families we have plenty of art activities and games to keep everyone amused. Over in the activity room you can try your hand at a range of crafty activities for all the family to get involved in.

At what age can you have a social media profile – 10, 13 or 16? It’s 10. Just two of the questions put to us by our recent speaker, Janet Humphries, on the subject of child sexual exploitation and the dangers of the internet.

As parents, grandparents and professionals we realised that we just don’t know enough about the risks and pressures encountered by young people, the criminal nature of some

common practices or even simple facts like the age restrictions for different activities.

Janet recommended Googling CEOP, Child Exploitation and Online Protection.

Strangely enough we have recently been discussing another way in which digital technology impacts on us.

What is the role of clubs like ours in a world of constant, instant communication? Joining a group, meeting with people doesn’t seem much in fashion. We do use social media and

other technologies to make life easier but we get a buzz from working on a project together.

Our voice is more powerful if we campaign together for something we care about. Above all we make real friendships and enjoy each other’s company. Our quiz team has just been in action and we are planning a theatre visit soon.

STOWMARKET LIONS’ ANNUAL ART SHOW The Stowmarket Lions are getting ready for their fourth annual art show and sale taking place over the weekend of March 4-6. The show will again be held in the wonderful venue of the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts. It is anticipated that more than 300 entries by local artists and photographers will be on display offering a wide and varied range of exhibits for sale.

The Stowmarket Lions perform all their fundraising work on a voluntary basis and since its inauguration in 2013 the art show has raised thousands of pounds to help our local community.

The show will be open for general admission on Saturday and Sunday, March 5 and 6 from 10am. Admission is £1, with under 16s free when accompanied by an adult.

Mid Suffolk Brass was formed in August 2014. Since then, we have been honoured by the presence of Andrew Bannister, a top musician from The Brighouse and Rastrick Band, one of the country’s championship bands. In October Andrew conducted a music workshop with our band members in the morning and played some amazing solo pieces at our autumn concert in the evening.

During the last 17 months, Mid Suffolk Brass has performed at the autumn concert, two Christmas concerts, played in support of our mayor, Councillor Barry Salmon, at Old Newton Bowls Club, performed at Gig in the Yard at Fox Yard and at the Meadow Centre. We also appeared at the mayor’s event at the Museum of East Anglian Life in between many other carolling events. Some of these events have enabled us to raise muchneeded funds to purchase ties for our musicians and banners to hang on the music stands, helping us to emphasise our identity.

We have many events planned for 2016 including joining another band for a massed bands concert and an invite to play in Germany. One of

our supporters this year is Stowmarket Town Mayor, Councillor Barry Salmon. Barry is hosting a charity Chinese buffet at The Chinese Chequers in Stowmarket on Tuesday, March 8, 7pm for 7.30pm. Tickets are £20 and available from Stowmarket Town Council Offices on Milton Road South.

CREETING PRIMARY SCHOOL We are very proud of our pupils who qualified for the Suffolk County Indoor Athletics Finals and came seventh overall. We were competing against huge schools from Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds and can proudly say that we gave all our older students the chance to take part rather than choosing the fastest.

Sixteen pupils had a wonderful three days in London recently. We visited the Houses of Parliament and had a personal meeting with Dr Dan Poulter, our MP.

Among other things we had a tour of Tower Bridge, visited the beautiful Hindu Temple and watched The Play That Goes Wrong, which had us rolling in the aisles with laughter. We met up with our penpals from Mitchell Brook Primary School in Brent and spent a fantastic afternoon getting to know some of them as well as learning African drumming. Hopefully a few students from Mitchell Brook will come to Creeting in the summer term.

We have passed the 3,000 mile mark in our Golden Mile Challenge and between us the school has walked as far as Morocco! SPORT / ON THE GRAPEVINE STOWMARKERS NETBALL CLUB Our players are fortunate to have an indoor venue for winter and an outdoor venue for summer and it won’t be long before they move to the summer ground at Needham Market.

The junior players are taking part in a sponsored walk this Easter, walking from their winter ground to their summer ground to raise money for the club so that they are able to enter into next year’s Disneyland Paris netball tournament.

All the players are really keen to go on this trip so the more funds the club makes the better chance they have of being able to enter.

The club takes juniors from eight to 14 years old and has two boys who regularly attend.

Although male players are unable to play in any matches other than High 5 they still enjoy coming along each week.

SCORPION MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY This year is the 30th anniversary of WAKO (World Association of Kickboxing Organisations) and Mark JR Trent, head coach at Scorpion Academy and a WAKO member 30 years, was invited to the celebrations where he was presented with his WAKO 8th dan blackbelt certificate. Tenth dan blackbelt grandmaster Brian Dossett made the presentation and he will be travelling to Suffolk later in the year to run another seminar for the academy and invited guests.

With the recent release of the new Star Wars film the Scorpion Academy felt it was only appropriate to celebrate the event with a lightsaber training session. Paul Leech, his brother Peter and cousin Terry have a large collection of lightsabers and they kindly allowed us to train with them.

Their lightsabers are designed to allow full

contact strikes which of course add to the fun.

A big turnout of juniors and seniors thoroughly enjoyed the session and a lot of fun and excitement was had. At the end of the junior session parents had the chance to take a photograph of their Jedi Knight son or daughter.

A big thank you to senior master Andy Lewis and instructors Mel Walmsley, Dave Fell and Max and Jacob Walmsley for their invaluable help with the juniors.

CHURCH NEWS THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST, NEEDHAM MARKET We have all been saying it doesn’t seem that long since Christmas, but by the time you read this we will be well into the Season of Lent, which means Easter isn’t far away.

On Saturday, March 5 there will be a coffee morning in the church in aid of the Roof Repair Fund (see page 13) so why not pop in for a piece of cake and a drink? There may even be some produce on sale.

Fundraising for the Roof Repair Fund is bringing in several grants from various organisations but we are still hoping for a grant of thousands from somewhere that means we can move forward and start to get quotes for the cost of the repairs required. If you wish to make a donation this can be done by using Btmydonate.

CHURCH NEWS CHRISTCHURCH, NEEDHAM MARKET Methodist / United Reformed Church

W

hat a difference a year makes. The building work at the front of Christchurch started in March 2015, and I imagine some of us find it difficult to recall the old frontage, particularly inside the building.

But it is surprising just how quickly we get used to new things – even though sometimes we are not entirely sure at first that we like them. It’s not long before that new haircut, or those new glasses, become familiar and ‘normal’.

One thing that changes is the date for Easter. Currently the date is determined by a formula involving the full moon that follows the northern spring equinox. It’s complicated and at times, such as this year, we end up with Easter in March.

The earliest it can be is March 22. However, there are discussions under way between various church leaders and it is possible that at some time in the future Easter will be celebrated on a set Sunday in April which will be helpful for everyone, particularly schools!

The long weekend over Easter marks a time when things changed and indeed do still change. Many tourist attractions open for the first time at Easter and they will be hoping that spring sunshine is the order of the day. It is the first bank holiday of the year and an opportunity for families to spend time together.

For churches and Christians it is a weekend of great contrasts as we recall Jesus dying on the cross on Good Friday, and then on Easter Day the empty tomb and the news that he had risen from the dead.

The weekend is a time of sombre sadness, followed by a day of joy and celebration. Never mind what a difference a year makes – more like what a difference three days make.

HOME WORSHIP We had a record attendance at Home Worship on February 1 when Diocescan Discipleship and Ministry Development Officer Ruth Dennigan led our worship with a meditation on Psalm 114 – how God has been with us through difficult circumstances, just as he has been with people in the past.

This month, The Rev Robert Hinsley from the Mission to Seafarers is coming to lead Home Worship, which will meet at 10am at 137 High Street, Needham Market, on Monday, March 7 (always the first Monday morning of the month). All welcome.

This is an outreach group with tea, coffee and biscuits and a friendly chat after the worship.
