A WORD FROM THE EDITOR The game has just ended! I’m utterly devastated but have spent the last hour trying (unconvincingly) to persuade my eight-year-old son it’s not the end of the world. It’s all falling on deaf ears just now, but hopefully not for long. We will pick ourselves up and we will come back, and next time we will have experience on our side.

Well done boys. Football might not be coming home today, but you will be given a heroes’ welcome when you do.

As a Galway girl I have experienced a similar degree of disappointment more times than I wish to acknowledge. So much of the summer (every summer) in Ireland revolves around GAA fixtures and it’s impossible not to get caught up in the excitement. We grow up playing hurling and camogie and the rivalry is intense, especially at club level. Every game is analysed and every move dissected ad infinitum until the next game. Then it starts all over again.

Sport can be cruel, but when it’s joyful, there really is nothing quite like it. When you support a team, you become a member of an extensive community. Even though I’m 500 miles from home I feel proud when I fly the Galway flag. That sense of heritage, that wonderful belonging, will stay with me forever. I shall forever be a Galway girl.

Of course I’m now also a Suffolk girl and I’ve been as caught up in the excitement of the World Cup as everyone else. Even if you’re not a footie fan, I hope you have engaged with the World Cup in some small way and that the feel-good factor stays with you for a long time. I also hope it inspires you to appreciate the value of shared experience and to seek out opportunities to spend time with others without the expense of a long-haul flight.

Whether you choose a sporting activity (either as participant or spectator), a coffee morning, a walk or a talk, there are opportunities aplenty in your local community and I hope In Touch motivates you reach out and grab the ball with both hands.

NEWS SIP, SIP, HOORAY FOR STOWMARKET FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVAL The first ever Stowmarket Food & Drink Festival, held on Sunday, July 1, has been declared a resounding success.

Stowmarket Town Mayor, Councillor Linda Baxter said: “I was very proud to be a part of the event and hope that we can repeat it in the future. The number of people who supported the event exceeded all our expectations.”

Taste buds were teased and noses tantalised when producers and suppliers of some of East Anglian’s finest food and produce came together for the festival. The gastronomic celebrations featured irresistible food from suppliers from all over the region who showcased not only local produce but also tastes from all over the world. Highlights included delicious hot vegan food, plentiful paella, decadent chocolate fountains and mouth-watering Mediterranean delicacies. It was a real ‘foodies’ heaven.

The festival launch, located in town centre, attracted over 3,500 visitors sampling the abundance of culinary delights on offer. The festival also featured cooking demonstrations from local chefs including Chris Lee from the Bildeston Crown, Jana Tarling from Petit Pancake and Joshua Evans from Mill Bar and Grill. Live music was provided by the Stowmarket Concert Band and children were able to get hands-on with cookery workshops where they could make homemade lemonade and decorate biscuits.

Event organiser Jerry Humphreys said: “Suffolk and East Anglia has so much to offer when it comes to food and drink and we were extremely proud to be able to showcase so many great local producers and ingredients from the local area. The event was a great success with many retailers selling out.”

EACH LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO PUT IN THE FRAME AT STOWMARKET A charity’s popular volunteer recruitment drive – that sees people add themselves to novelty frames such as the one pictured – has been relaunched after great success last year.

Be a Name in our Frame aims to get people helping out at one of the 32 East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) shops across the region.

EACH relies heavily on volunteers to run its shops, that collectively raise over £900,000 towards the vital care and support the good cause provides for children with life-threatening conditions and their families.

Last year EACH ran Be a Name in our Frame twice, in May and October, with 97 people signing up to help its shops.

Michelle Bainbridge, EACH Shop Manager, said: “We really appreciate the hard work of every single one of our volunteers, but we can always use more help to keep our shop running and I’m sure there are others out there.

“We find volunteering is a two-way process. While as a charity we gain from the gift of their time, our volunteers make friends and learn new skills, too.”

For both families accessing care and those who have been bereaved, EACH is a lifeline at an unimaginably difficult time. The charity has to generate 84 per cent of the money it needs to operate and relies on public support to continue its service.

NEWS DAN’S COACH TRAVEL – A DREAM FULFILLED

KNOWLEDGE WINS OUT AT HOME AND GARDEN AQUATICS

Dan Trent from Stowmarket has fulfilled a lifelong dream by launching his own coach company providing excursions, private hires and contract work within the local area and further afield.

“I have always liked buses and coaches, right from an early age,” says Dan. “At school I used to see the owner of Johns Tours (Big John) every afternoon. He invited me to a bus rally and it all went from there! Over the years John passed on the bug and became like a second father.”

In his teens Dan used to clean the local firm’s coaches on the weekend.

He also worked as a volunteer and then a carer in the local care home at Finborough, but throughout school he consistently said he intended to gain a coach licence and at the age of 18. This he did!

For the last seven years Dan has worked for many companies and done a variety of work, but having his own company was always his long-term ambition.

“Last year I sat my transport manager’s exam, found a suitable yard to keep the coaches and sent off for an operator’s licence. It was a long wait, but at the start of April my licence was granted. Since then it has been full steam to get the company ready.”

Dan’s Coach Travel covers areas of Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich, Stowmarket and Sudbury (plus all areas in-between), offering private hire and contract work if required. They have also started an excursions programme with pickups around Stowupland (Tesco estate), Combs Ford and Stowmarket.

“It’s a more door to door service,” explains Dan. “We will be visiting areas in East Anglia and slightly further afield. The main aim of the day trips is to have a laugh, an enjoyable day out and make friends.”

CEDARS CHURCH CELEBRATES TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY A popular and family-friendly church on the Cedars Park estate in Stowmarket is celebrating its ten year anniversary. Cedars Church was planted in 2008 to serve the needs of the Cedars Park housing estate in Stowmarket.

Cedars Church meets every Sunday at 10.30am at Cedars Park Primary School. From small beginnings, the church has grown to more than 80 regular worshippers, including many young families and children and is passionate about sharing the Christian message in the local community and further afield. Its Friday evening youth club regularly attracts more than 70 young people from School Years 1-10.

On Sunday, September 2, the church will hold a 10 anniversary thanksgiving service to be led by Pastor Iain Shaddick, who led the first meeting of the new church ten years ago. After the service, there will be a celebration party. The service starts at 10.30am at the school and all are invited. th

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR NEW CHARITY HOME STORE Age UK Suffolk, the county’s older person’s charity, will be opening the doors of their new Home Store later in July on the site of the East of England Cooperative on Combs Lane. Offering new and nearly new high-quality furniture, decorative furnishings and electrical items, alongside the more traditional clothing and bric-a-brac, new store manager Kieron said: “There are very few furniture shops in Stowmarket currently, and we wanted to be able to offer an affordable local option for our customers”.

Age UK Suffolk shops rely on the goodwill of volunteers, and with a range of interesting tasks including serving customers, stock processing, window dressing, there will also be a Furniture Workshop where volunteers will assist with refurbishing furniture to sell in the shop.

NEWS THE LEGENDARY RON AMES As a member of the local community you will probably already be aware that earlier this summer Stowmarket lost one of its leading lights, a superstar, a wonderful man called Ron Ames. Born in the Stowupland Street fish and chip shop, educated in Stowmarket schools, travelled the hippy trail to live on a beach in Portugal, husband to his beloved Val, founder of Stowmarket Volleyball Club, coach, mentor and inspiration to hundreds of young boys and girls, father to two wonderful lads, Mark and Tom, self-taught Suffolk Barn expert which took him all over the world, a skier, a snowboarder, a Stowmarket Strider, a leading light of Stowmarket Swimming Club and an international athlete. Where does one start to celebrate such an amazing life?

Last Christmas Ron had already represented his country at the world triathlon. Having finally stopped playing his beloved volleyball at the young age of 60, Ron returned to his swimming, joined Striders and took up triathlons. Last Christmas he received a letter to tell him that he had been selected again for the 2018 event; he was still in full training when the cruel illness took hold, depriving Ron of his second international honour, his family of a wonderful loving husband, dad and granddad, and the rest of us of a wonderful Stowmarket character.

For many people, mention of Ron is synonymous with volleyball and it is through this sport he changed the lives of so many youngsters. He led by example, displaying a terrific work ethic always allied with a sense of fun. But no need for us to explain – let us just quote some who posted on Facebook, most teenagers when Ron had such an effect on their lives, many now coming to the end of successful careers: “a true legend”, “true sportsman”, “inspiring… an amazing man”, “always helping others”, “legend is spot-on”, “always the first to come and say hello”, “Ron and I had wonderful battles across the net”, “a true gentleman”, “always looked forward to bumping into him”, “it was the best time I’ve ever had”, “our volleyball trips to this country and Belgium will forever be embedded in my memories”.

How Ron found time for the rest of his life while inspiring these youngsters I am not sure. But he did have another life, and it was an amazing one. He met Val, his wife to be, at about the same time he tragically lost one of his brothers in a motorcycle accident. Ron and Val did what many dreamed of doing in the late 60s – throwing away a conventional lifestyle to take off in their bright yellow camper van to travel to Portugal where they whiled away their time surfing during the day and sleeping on the beach at night.

Back to a more conventional job in an architect’s office (now living in a bungalow in Combs), but that wasn’t Ron’s style. He wanted to be more hands-on and set up an architectural building firm, working on Suffolk timber framed buildings. He developed such a skill level that his work took him around the world. Ron was an educated man, not so much in the conventional way (Ron didn’t have a lot of time for the institutionalised way of life), but in a self-taught, university of lifestyle. During the occasional breaks in work (and they were occasional if you worked for Ron!), he would always have a book on his lap. There was an element of destiny in Ron’s choice of career. There is a barn in Stowupland which he took me to once, where there is a brass plaque which he proudly showed me on one of the timbers giving the name of the builder and other information. The builder’s name – Ames. Not Ron, but his great-grandfather.

To finish this piece off I am returning to Ron’s work with young people. While he was coaching the Stowupland boys team a young lad turned up. He came from the Far East and had no family in this country. I think that Ron became something of a father figure to this lad. On hearing of Ron’s passing, his thoughts (not edited) sum up how so many felt: “I have so much to say but for now, I just want to say a big thank you for everything that you have done and rest in peace Mr Ron Ames. You were a legend and your stories will keep passing on.”

TRACTOR RUN AND CAR DISPLAY RAISES £2,200 FOR SUFFOLK HOSPICES

The Rotary Clubs of Stowmarket and Stowmarket Gipping Valley came together to organise the Mid-Suffolk Tractor Run for the first time this year.

The event raised over £2,200 which will be split between the St Nicholas Hospice in Bury St Edmunds and the St Elizabeth Hospice in Ipswich. Most of the takings were raised by a raffle in which there were numerous prizes including £250 first, £150 second and £100 third. Over 50 tractors took part on the route which meandered on minor roads for about 20 miles and through several villages.

The winner of the top prize has yet to be notified, but the £150 runner-up was Cheryl Proctor of Downham Market and third was won by Suffolk Fire and Rescue’s Brian Hawes who is based in Elmswell. Both were presented their cheques by the president of Stowmarket Gipping Valley, Shirley Miller.

Joint organisers Terry Auld and Peter Andrews were delighted with the result and hoped for an even bigger and better event next year. President Shirley Miller stated: “There was great co-operation between the two Rotary Clubs.”

Both clubs meet at the Cedars Hotel in Stowmarket, the former Monday lunchtime and the latter Thursday evening (every two weeks).

GRANTS UP FOR GRABS! Up to £7,500 is being made available to community groups and charities as Stowmarket Town Council launched its annual grants scheme this week.

The grants scheme provides funding for projects and initiatives that will benefit the residents of Stowmarket. Grants up to £500 are available giving eligible groups within the area a funding boost.

The scheme has funded a diverse range of projects, both large and small, in previous years such as start-up funding for the Stowmarket Stars Majorette Troupe, an outside defibrillator for the Chilton Fields Sports Clubs and outdoor play equipment for St Peters and St Marys Pre-school.

Ali Huggins, Stowmarket Stars Majorette Club Troupe Leader said: “The grant from the town council has made my dream of starting a majorette troupe a reality. The money enabled me to purchase the equipment I needed and produce advertising material. It has made such a difference and the troupe is going from strength to strength.”

Deputy Town Clerk Michelle Marshall added: “We are eager to support as many local groups as possible through the annual grants scheme and would encourage community groups and organisations to apply.”

Groups have until Friday, October 19, to apply for the funding.

REPORT FROM KEITH WELHAM: JULY 2018 DISTRICT COUNCILLOR FOR STOWUPLAND WARD Locality Grants As I mentioned last month, each member of the district council has been allocated £6,250 to spend on local projects. I have already received two bids for projects in Stowupland and I hope more will be coming in soon.

Please think about any organisation or club in Stowupland of which you are a member, and if they might wish to submit a bid for some of this money. It needs to be a bid for a specific project or purchase of equipment and cannot be used on general running costs of an organisation. Please get in touch with me if you have something in mind.

Members’ Allowances You may have read in a local paper or seen on the local news that the level of allowances to be paid to members, and extra allowances for special responsibilities such as Cabinet members and committee chairs, have increased. For members without special responsibilities, the increase is 25 per cent, from £4,000 to £5,000. This was agreed by a slender majority with all opposition members and two Conservatives voting against.

About a third of the Conservative members were absent from the meeting but, nevertheless, there were sufficient of them to scrape through. I voted against because it seems wrong to be voting ourselves a pay rise part way through our four-year term. Any decision on allowances should be taken by the outgoing council at the end of its term of office and should set the level of allowances for the newly elected council.

Five-Year Housing Land Supply and the Joint Local Plan We are waiting for the details of the number and type of homes built in Mid Suffolk during the year to March 31. This figure should be available soon and will form part of the calculation to find out how close MSDC is to having a five-year supply of housing land ready for development. We are also waiting for a report on progress on the Joint Local Plan, but we

don’t have a firm date for completion of the plan. The Local Plan and the Land Supply are key to protecting our countryside from unsuitable development.

Empty Council Properties Members have been pressing for vacated council properties to be re-let quicker. Some progress has been made with the average time between tenants being cut from around 50 days six months ago to 30 days in May. Further steps are being taken to co-ordinate the various trades better and for materials to be more readily available to the workforce, cutting down the time needed to arrange for collection and delivery. Some properties can be updated with very little work; others may require removal of asbestos and major works to kitchens, bathrooms and heating systems, so the time taken to carry out the work varies greatly.

Needham Market HQ Site Redevelopment The council is close to agreeing the details of a scheme to redevelop the former offices and car park, providing new homes (including affordable homes), a retail outlet and a number of public car parking spaces. A planning application should be submitted later this year.

The site of the former Needham Market Middle School is now also owned by MSDC and proposals for its redevelopment are being prepared and should be available for consultation shortly. Together, these sites will make a significant contribution towards meeting the affordable housing need of the district, but much more needs to be done. I and my colleagues will continue to press for more council house construction to be carried out by MSDC and for those housing units to be high quality, low energy homes to be let as council homes.

STOWMARKET ROOKERY COMMUNITY BOWLS GROUP

The Regal Theatre hosted the Stowmarket Premiere of the new British Comedy film Patrick on Friday, June 29. One of the film’s stars, Roy Hudd, was in attendance and spoke to lucky ticket holders before introducing his new film.

Regal Manager David Marsh said: “It was absolutely fantastic to have Roy at the cinema, he’s a national treasure and is stage and screen royalty, we feel privileged to have him as the Regal’s patron.”

In just a few months we have coached and encouraged a visually impaired (almost totally blind) local resident to bowl. He is now preparing to enter visually impaired bowling competitions around the country and competing against locally sighted bowlers. His goal when he first started with us was to be treated equally as a normal sighted bowler.

We are now starting a publicity campaign with the help of County Councillor Nick Gowrley (pictured on the front cover at Cedrus House prize giving) to encourage disabled people who stay at home to visit us and help them achieve goals of their own.

Patrick tells the story of Sarah, a young woman whose life is in a bit of a mess. The last thing she needs is someone else to look after. Yet, like it or not, her grandmother has bequeathed her a very spoiled pug – Patrick.

Surely she must have had her reasons...

Our volunteers now visit three local care homes and are engaging with 40-50 residents per week, helping stroke clubs, people living with dementia, visually impaired and people living with a disability to bring some extra fun to their day and encourage them to be more active. We have become a member of the Dementia Action Alliance and have group visits booked three to four times a week well into 2019.

The Regal Theatre is due to have a £2.5m refurbishment in 2019, which includes an additional two new screens and enlargement of the bar and foyer area.

Within the community of Stowmarket we are looking for cakes which reflect and promote local businesses, societies and clubs in Stowmarket or nearby villages. Businesses can either donate a cake baked by one of their staff or engage one of the local professional cake bakers which we have included on our website. NEWS / OUT & ABOUT TESTING TENDONS Wimbledon is now done and the World Cup is over. There were some slips and trips along the way, many an athlete taped up and the odd player grabbing a knee or arm in pain.

There was the mention by commentators about athletes having tendonitis. Sadly not just the layperson, but also a host of healthcare professionals and doctors are still using that word. The reason it’s sad is that it doesn’t actually explain accurately what’s going on in the tendon and can led to people treating it in a non-ideal way.

Tendon’s are like a rope – lots of fibers closely bound together forming a really tough structure that attaches our muscles to our bones. When a muscle works and contracts it shortens and pulls on the tendon. This in turn pulls on the bone and we get movement.

Tendons can also be used in other clever ways, but there isn’t the space here to go into that now.

It’s normal with everyday life, activity and sport that we cause some micro damage to a lot of the tissues in our body. It’s not normally a problem as the body is really efficient and speedy at healing itself.

Sometimes things don’t go quite as they should and either the rate of damage is too much for the body to heal quickly enough or the bodies healing abilities aren’t as good as they should be. This can then lead to an irritated and painful tendon.

It used to be thought that when a tendon was painful it was inflammation (a collection of chemicals released by the body which helps us to heal); hence the name used tendonitis – ‘itis’ in medicine means inflammation. That was a great theory, but unfortunately it’s been shown not to be the case by the scientists.

What’s actually happening is the fibers of the tendon are not held as firmly together as they should be and extra tissue fluid fills in the gaps. Some of the fibers of the tendon have become frayed so overall the tendon is not as strong as it should be. There are also chemicals released which irritate local nerves and make the area more painful.

STOWMARKET RBL POPPY APPEAL Stowmarket Remembers Schools Project Both the art and literary projects are coming to fruition and by the time you read this, schools will be out for summer. Stowupland and Abbots Hall Primary Schools are finalising their work on the projects on which we will bring more news in the next edition. We also have a home education network interested in producing an exhibit. The 1st and 3rd Stowmarket Scouts group are helping us research the names on the War Graves in Stowmarket Cemetery in readiness for a special service on November 8 – again more about this next time. In September final preparations for the exhibition at the library and Museum of East Anglia Life will start. The exhibition will take place from October 13 until November 11.

Poppy Curtain We have reached the 3,000 mark for the poppies for the commemorative curtain. Thank you and please carry on in earnest as we need another 2,000 over the next couple of months so that we can complete this special exhibit with the help of the 1331 Stowmarket Squadron RAF Cadets.

AFTERNOON TEA ON THE GREENSWARD

So any treatments for tendon issues that are based on getting rid of inflammation in preference to stimulating the tendon to heal are not really going to be beneficial. Steroid injections, anti-inflammatory tablets or gels and using ice packs are not really an ideal way to help a poorly tendon.

Identifying the reasons why it has become irritated with you in the first place is the best place to start. A healthcare provider can then show you appropriate stretches, specific strengthening exercises which are progressed as you need, and they can use machines to help encourage the bodies own healing processes to get kick started again – such as radial pressure wave (shockwave) machines, therapeutic lasers or microcurrent machines.

Don’t score an own goal and let tendon pain drag you down, kick it into touch this summer by striking it with the best treatments.

OUT & ABOUT THE REGAL IN AUGUST The summer holidays are here! In some previous years this has meant six weeks of animated family films and not much else. August 2018 does have some great children’s films, but there are also some brilliant movies aimed at people a little older.

We have a very special treat on August 18 when we’re proud to screen a newly digitally remastered version of Elvis Presley’s 1968 comeback concert.

This is a rare opportunity to see and hear Elvis at his best on the big screen.

We’re also pleased to be showing Andre Rieu’s 2018 Maastricht Concert on August 12 and 19.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again: Musical starring Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Lily James and Cher. It’s the one we’ve been waiting for since 2008! Sophie learns about her mother’s past while pregnant herself.

CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE AND CHARITY SHOP We left home at 8am on July 1 to take the two children who had been with us for the last fortnight back to the airport and to collect the new group of 15 arriving on the flight they would go home on.

While on the road we received a message to tell us that the flight leaving Belarus had been delayed by at least an hour so would be an hour plus arriving at Gatwick. I am sure you will recall it was a blisteringly hot day so not the best time to then get stuck in a massive traffic jam on the M25!

The two girls were safely checked in for departure and assigned to a returning adult to look after them on the way home. It was then over to arrivals to wait for our group. Eventually they arrived, very tired and weary after having been up since 3am and of course Belarus is two hours ahead of UK time, making it seem even longer for them.

With even heavier traffic on the way home it was almost 6.30pm before we arrived back in Stowmarket where the host families were waiting, very excited to meet the children who would be their house guests for the next month.

On Monday 2, myself and our interpreters visited each child and found all of them to be already ‘at home’ but amazed at things we take for granted such as having a whole bedroom to themselves, gardens, outside toys, showers on demand and a plentiful supply of fresh fruit!

Tuesday saw the start of our program with the children meeting daily at our new centre within Stowmarket Football Club. The children love to be there with all the facilities we have been given and it is a great place to base our days at.

On Wednesday it was the dreaded dentist day and I have to admit how (pleasantly) surprised I was. As usual Jill Geaney and her team of dentists worked flat out from 8.30am but, for the first time in 11 years, everyone had been seen and treated by 11am! This was absolutely amazing as previous years had been long, long days, sometimes not finishing until 6pm. Again we were really fortunate to have been given the use of the adjacent Church Hall which made everything so much easier as the children could stay there until called for their turn. All-in-all, it was a record year with only 21 fillings and 15 extractions being carried out.

And so our program will continue until the end of the month with many exciting ‘first time’ activities to be experienced by the children, the majority of which are provided by our supporters and helpers who we rely on so much.

STOWMARKET AND DISTRICT TALKING NEWSPAPER The Annual General Meeting of the Stowmarket and District Talking Newspaper, held at the United Reformed Church, heard the chairman, John Webb, thank everybody involved for their support during a difficult year. He explained that the reduction to one available editor had resulted in the service, which supplies memory sticks of local news and information to those with sight impairments, reduced to one issue a month.

Many thanks to our loyal customers who ventured out to join us at our July market. It was very hot and sticky! Our next market is Saturday, August 4, which promises to have a great range of stalls including textiles, woodcraft, jewellery, book art, knitted novelties, up-cycled crafts, taxidermy, pastries and much more.

We have plenty of crafts to suit all ages; children love the knitted novelties and the bugs and butterflies on the taxidermy stall. We have jewellery for all price ranges with some great pocket money necklaces and bracelets for small people and some great pieces of stylish beadwork that would enhance any summer outfit. Some of the textiles stalls have a great range of children’s cotton dresses and hats, just right for this hot weather.

The market is proving very popular with stallholders who want to participate and we currently have a waiting list for stallholders right up until December.

The ethos of the market is that everything is hand-made so you are helping local craftspeople and artisans by supporting us.

We are located at the Scout Centre, Milton Road North, Stowmarket IP14 2NP (near the library). Admission is free and we open for business around 10am and close at 1.30pm. The Scout fundraising committee provide the teas, coffees and home-made cakes to help support Scouting in Stowmarket.

Her citation reads ‘for services to people with sight impairment and to the community in Needham Market’. Our picture shows Margaret receiving her 30 year award at a previous AGM. The meeting also listened to an interesting talk by Ken Snow, who has not let his disability stop him doing things many might only dream about. He spoke about a pair of boots which had made a number of remarkable treks in amazing parts of the world raising money for The Children’s Society.

July has been a busy month at The Mix. We’ve had the launch of our garden area for Cabbages & Kings, which has been great for customers to enjoy in all this wonderful sunshine. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you really should!

OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB Justin Minns presented a talk entitled Landscape on May 14 and we now fully understand why his pictures feature on some of the covers of Landscape Photographer of the Year. He gave an interesting, helpful and inspiring talk which the members liked very much. I am sure some of us will be putting our new-found knowledge to good use over the summer break.

On June 11, George Buxton came to judge our final competition before the summer break. As usual, he made helpful and constructive comments on all of the entries. He then presented the Len Backhouse trophy to Roy Fidler for the best projected digital image (PDI) on the night – Come Fly with Me – and the Cyril and Mary Hall salver to Roy Ward for the best print on the night – Cley Windmill. Congratulations to you both.

Our end of season photoshoot took place on Sunday, June 24 at Southwold Harbour. This was a wonderful venue with lots of interesting things to photograph. We also have several photoshoots throughout the summer including West Mersea (tides permitting), Snetterton, Walton-on-the-Naze and Audley End. Our new season starts on Monday, September 10, when we welcome prospective new members and catch up with existing members. The first meeting for prospective new members is free of charge.

New members are always very welcome at the club. All you need is a camera – any camera and a real interest in using it. Our members use DSLRs, mirrorless, compact and bridge cameras. Regular meetings are held at Stowmarket Community Centre, Hillside, Stowmarket, IP14 2BD, usually on the second and fourth Monday of the month between September and June. ANOTHER FANTASTIC SUMMER SEASON FOR SIMPLY BRASS As we come to the end of another busy summer season for Simply Brass we look back on what’s been another very successful period for the band.

The latest set of exam results are in and we’re very proud to announce yet another four of our members have passed their Grade 3 exams. June and July also saw the band perform at a number of village fetes, school summer fayres and our own sell-out summer concert where we entertained a very appreciative audience with a variety of music.

The highlight on the season has to be our trip to the Aldeburgh Music Festival for a performance at the bandstand on the beach. Nine schools gave us their full backing and on a Wednesday morning in June we made the trip to Aldeburgh to entertain the general public on the beach. Fortunately the sun shone and the band were a tremendous success; one member of the public even wrote to the local paper saying we’d made his day. A fantastic event we hope to repeat in the future.

ASSURED SHORTHOLD TENANCIES: WHAT DOES A LANDLORD NEED TO DO AT THE OUTSET? Over the years, the legal requirements that a landlord must comply with prior to the grant of an Assured Shorthold tenancy – which is the usual sort of tenancy or lease for a residential house or flat – have changed substantially. This month, therefore, I thought that it would be helpful if we went through some of the things that a landlord needs to ensure are in place at the start of the tenancy. The tenancy itself must comply with the ‘fairness’ requirements of the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

If there is gas at the property then the tenant must be given a copy of the current gas safety certificate. Smoke alarms must be fitted to all areas used as living accommodation, and where a room contains a solid fuel burning combustion appliance, carbon monoxide alarms must be fitted.

Where there is a deposit, the prescribed information must been served on the tenant under the Tenancy Deposit Scheme.

Finally, the landlord must have checked that the tenant can legally rent the property.

The government produces a booklet called How to Rent – the Checklist for Renting in England, and prior to the commencement of the tenancy, the landlord must give a copy of this to the tenant.

An Energy Performance Certificate must be in place and a copy given to the tenant. The rules on minimum energy efficiency in relation to rental property have changed, and there will no doubt be further changes in the future.

STOWMARKET CHORALE

Wednesday, August 1: Archive Evening This meeting will provide an opportunity for the group and individual members to display material relating to Stowupland including documents, photos, artefacts or the results of family history research.

Stowmarket Chorale attracts members from a wide area of Mid Suffolk and have recently appointed Tom Appleton to be the new music director.

Rehearsals with Tom will begin from September 12 and we meet weekly on Wednesday nights from 7.30-9.30pm at Chilton Community Primary School, Violet Hill Road, Stowmarket IP14 1NN.

Please bring anything of interest – we have plenty of tables. Items new to our archives relating to Stowupland Flower Show and the village hall will be on display. These were collected by Ena Carter, who was closely involved with both.

The flower show in various forms was a big event in the parish for almost 90 years until it ceased in 1969. Recently acquired items collected by the Catchpole family will also be on display.

Wednesday, September 5: Roman Roads in Suffolk by James Albone A priority for the newly arrived Roman invasion force in the first century AD was to establish a network of roads to facilitate the rapid movement of troops around the country, so they could react speedily to deal with any unrest amongst the native population. These would link up military depots, camps and towns. James Albone of the University of East Anglia will look at the significance of these roads within Suffolk.

As a means of introduction, we are hosting a Come and Sing day at Woolpit Village Hall on Saturday, August 18, 10am-4pm, when we will be having a fun day singing some choruses from Handel’s Messiah, with techniques to expand vocal abilities. STOWMARKET ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WOMEN’S SECTION We ventured outside on June 20 for our fish and chip supper outing to Felixstowe. We all enjoyed the meal and once again we were lucky to have such a warm evening to stroll along the prom and enjoy an ice cream.

OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET SUGARCRAFT CLUB Two meetings to write about this month as our June meeting was after the deadline for the last magazine.

Our June meeting was well attended. Unfortunately Liz Ungless, our scheduled speaker, was unable to come because of a health problem, but club member Jean stepped into the breach at the eleventh hour and did a demonstration of rice paper flowers. Jean was inspired to try making rice paper flowers following Chris Kerrigan’s demonstration last year.

Being Jean, she has worked on her own techniques and showed us how to make the most beautiful blooms. She also showed us how she makes her own petal veiners. What a revelation! Silicone and cornflour mixed together... the possibilities are endless. A very enjoyable evening and huge thanks to Jean.

Our July meeting was on an incredibly hot evening, but many members were there to see Gemma Parker of Gemma’s Crafty Cakes in Felixstowe show us how to make a sitting teddy bear in sponge cake. An incredibly cute character, but surprisingly not too difficult to make. At least Gemma didn’t make it look too difficult, but that is the gift of the good demonstrator. From trimming, filling and covering the sponge, a nifty trick for creating it’s head to the finishing details and facial features, a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Gemma gave us the finished cake to raffle and it was won by a member who had a birthday a few days later. A big thank you to Gemma; we look forwards to a return visit.

STOWMARKET BRANCH SUFFOLK REGIMENT OCA At our June meeting we were treated to a fine film of gardens with music by Peter Green. Some of the gardens were quite local, but unknown to us. I attended the AGM of the Old Comrades Association at The Keep in Bury St Edmunds on May 24. All the clubs are struggling with dwindling members. It was suggested that email was the way to go, but Brigadier Calder said that he would like the meetings to stay as now as they are friendlier.

Minden Day this year will have the 3rd Royal Anglian Band. They will parade their standard as the 1st Battalion is away. I did suggest that maybe the Boy’s Brigade Band would do something on The Square during the afternoon.

We would love to see some new faces so if you have served in the forces why not come along? We meet at 8pm on the last Wednesday of each month in the Royal British Legion Club in Tavern Street. You don’t have to be a member of the Royal British Legion and would be made very welcome. If you prefer to have a look around first, call in and see what’s going on and enjoy a very reasonably priced pint.

SUMMER SUNSHINE AT ORCHARD BARN As Orchard Barn is totally off-grid, the hot dry weather of this summer has been a bit of challenge to us. Our stored rainwater has all been used and we are now drawing water from the pond to keep the garden growing. We are investigating putting a solar-powered water pump in place so that we can more easily cope with future droughts.

The restoration of the mediaeval Suffolk longhouse on site is going well. This is a very rare example of a building from the middle ages being brought back to life using tools and methods that have not changed over the centuries.

On Saturday, August 4, we are holding our ever-popular Tree to Timber event. This will feature demonstrations and taster sessions of many woodland crafts and traditional carpentry. Orchard Barn in Bildeston Road, Ringshall provides opportunities for volunteers to experience and develop skills in a peaceful rural setting. These opportunities include organic gardening, working on the Orchard Barn site, including the orchard and pond, and woodwork.

The treasurer of the Men’s Shed received the Mayor’s Award for Excellence on behalf of the Shed on Sunday, June 10.

Stowmarket Men’s Shed is privileged to have been asked to help St Elizabeth Hospice start their own Men’s Shed in their gardens at the hospice. By sharing our knowledge we will be able to support their staff in achieving this special project.

Our members are enjoying community outreach, while working with PPG Industries (Stowmarket), Holiday Opportunity Scheme (H.O.P.S.), The Mix in Stowmarket and making mud-kitchens for individual special needs.

The shed is a place for men and women to meet new friends while creating objects from wood, or simply drinking tea or coffee. We are always welcoming new members. You don’t need to be skilled in woodworking, so if you have the time, please contact us or just pop into the shed during one of our sessions.

OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET & DISTRICT MONDAY CLUB STOWMARKET BRANCH My last report was in May and now it’s July and I’m writing for the August edition. Where has that time gone?

We have had some interesting speakers over the last couple of months.

Trading Standards spoke to us about scam and fraud awareness; it was a real eye-opener to realise just how gullible some people are. They stressed that if something seems too good to be true, it is almost certainly a scam.

We also had a very interesting presentation from a volunteer from SERV (Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers) Blood Bikes. This is a real emergency service which is totally dependent on donations. The transfer of blood and platelets by the NHS stops at around 6pm; this is when the motorcyclists take over, taking blood from Addenbrookes, where it is stored, to all parts of the country where it is needed throughout the night.

We have had some outings in this lovely weather including a visit to the Cold War Museum at Bentwaters. Several of our members could relate to the Cold War period as they were serving personnel at the time.

We also went to Linton Zoo near Cambridge, a very nice, small zoo dealing mainly with the conservation of endangered animals. We had one of our senior members with us and, knowing of his love for animals, arranged for him to go in with the keeper to feed the Lemurs.

He was delighted and has proudly shown everyone the pictures taken.

Our next outing will be to the North Norfolk Railway where we will travel from Holt to Sheringham on a steam train and then have some free time in Sheringham before returning home.

Stowmarket & District Monday Club continues to meet weekly to enjoy a mixture of activities. We enjoyed an evening of bingo followed by a race night with everyone eager to roll the dice.

We held a craft night when the members made paper garlands from tissue paper. These looked very effective and were worn the following week when we held a Caribbean themed evening. Several of the members had added to their outfits with decorated hats and grass skirts. Lively dancing was the entertainment with a fish finger and punch supper.

We are a club for adults with learning difficulties and meet each Monday from 7.30-9.30pm at the Community Hub in Crown Street, Stowmarket.

STOWMARKET INNER WHEEL At the June meeting of Inner Wheel of Stowmarket, members celebrated founder member Florrie Heller’s 90th birthday.

Florrie (and her late husband) are very well known in Stowmarket, having owned Tydemans the Jewellers for many years, and is still a family business today.

Inner Wheel commissioned a special cake for Florrie, featuring the distinctive clock that hung outside the shop for many years. Members congratulated Florrie and all wished her a very happy birthday. It seemed a sin to eat the beautiful cake, but it was delicious!

BURY ST EDMUNDS AND STOWMARKET CATS PROTECTION This month we are looking for a home for Toby who has had to come back into our care due to his owner’s ill health.

The lady was very upset to give him up as they had a very close one-to-one relationship.

Toby is a handsome tabby boy with lovely green eyes and is about nine years old.

He has been used to a quiet home and is an affectionate and friendly lap cat. Toby has not been used to young children, dogs or other cats and we would like to find him a similar home to his previous one.

Toby is neutered, microchipped and fully vaccinated.

SCHOOLS / SPORT COMBS FORD PRIMARY SCHOOL Thank you to all who collected the Sports for Schools vouchers from the EADT. We didn’t accumulate quite enough for the big prizes, but will receive a sports pack for the whole school to enjoy.

In April, more than 110 children, teachers and helpers boarded the coaches for a fun and educational day out. We were lucky to win places for all our Year 3 and 4 children to attend the highly recommended annual School Farm and Country Fair at Trinity Park, Ipswich. The day allowed the children to experience many different aspects of farming, food production and the countryside through demonstrations and interactive exhibits.

Instead of a Christmas production, LKS2 (Years 3 & 4) and UKS2 (Years 5 & 6) each put on a play for parents in the summer term. The cast and crew have been rehearsing hard for the last few weeks and judging by the enthusiasm and tuneful voices ringing round the school they are going to be great, as usual.

Reception have been welcoming new children starting school this

September. There have been nursery visits and children have visited the school for storytime and open days. We are looking forward to seeing them in September at the start of their school career.

We are now looking to welcome children who are due to start school in September 2019. The school will be hosting open mornings after the summer break for parents and children who will be starting school for the first time.

The dates for your diary are Wednesdays, October 10 and 17. There will be the opportunity to have a tour of the school, meet some of the teachers, pick up useful information and ask any questions parents and carers may have. NEEDHAM MARKET BOWLS CLUB

The summer term is always a busy one at St Peter & St Mary’s Pre-school, but we always make time to enjoy the hot weather. We have lots of water activities in the garden to help us cool down, water pouring, water wheels and rollers to paint with, along with sliding and splashing in the paddling pool.

It’s hard to believe now that the first two weeks of the outdoor season were really cold and that two or three layers of clothing were required. Since then of course the weather has improved dramatically and now it’s a matter of cold drinks and staying hydrated. This means the greens are bowling really quickly and that is resulting in some really good matches.

We also released our beautiful butterflies, which the children have nurtured from caterpillar to cocoon. It was so exciting to release five Red Admirals into the garden and watch them fly away.

There will be a party to say goodbye to our children who will be starting school in September. They are flying off to continue their educational journey, confident and excited to explore pastures new.

So we will be looking forward to welcoming our new intake of children and their families at the beginning of their journey. Just like our butterflies, we have gone full circle yet again.

The main task for the green team is to make sure the sprinkler systems are operating correctly and the green is as ‘green’ as it can be. I always like to mention the green team as their work never stops and it’s due to their efforts that we are congratulated by visiting teams who have enjoyed bowling on our green.

The new patio area is now complete and furnished with tables and chairs and makes an excellent spectator area.

Team results have been mixed with both Monday teams and the Thursday team struggling, but better news for our three Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening team.

Tuesday ‘A’ have won eight of their 11 matches and are second, the ‘B’ team have won six out of 10 matches and are third, and the ‘C’ team have won seven out of 10 matches and are in second place. The Wednesday team are fighting hard to retain their title and are in second place having won nine out of 11 matches.

CHILTON COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL Proud pupils showed off their baking skills at Chilton Primary School on Friday, June 7.

There were over 50 entries and a wide range of cakes, from chocolate gateaux to emoji cakes, banana pancakes to a pink unicorn cake. It was a tough competition to judge, but Headteacher Ben Hemmings managed to sample all the cakes and come to a decision.

He remarked: “It was a difficult job eating 50 different types of cake, but I somehow managed it!”

The club triples and pairs competitions will be the same format as last year, drawn on the day. The pairs will be held on Saturday, September 1, and the triples on Sunday, September 9, both starting at 11am. There will notices on the board for you to put your names down and bacon sarnies and more will be available.

MEET AND GREET DAYS AT CROWLEY PARK Our meet and greets were disappointing this year mainly due to the weather. However, for anyone interesting in bowling we have social bowling every Wednesday at 2pm where you will be made welcome and can either just watch or take part in the bowling as there are always spare bowls to be used. Tea/coffee and biscuits are also available.

It is always a pleasure to bowl on a typical sunny and warm English afternoon or evening, but with the hotter than otherwise weather experienced in recent times it has been somewhat too uncomfortable for some players. But then, it is still preferable to cold, windy and wet occasions we are accustomed to at the start of any season.

It’s a strange time. At the time of writing we’re in the middle of the hottest, longest dry spell since 1976. Any grass we have at the club is more like fine straw, but luckily all our courts are macadam so they don’t require watering.

Wimbledon is enjoying a restful middle Sunday and already there have been shocks aplenty; out of the ladies top 10 seeds only Katerina Pliskova remains with all others felled. Venus Williams is also gone so the path looks clear for Serena who has a low seeding due to her recent absence. Only time will tell, but the odds must be firmly in her favour.

Within the bowling fraternity there is a recognised patter of comments raised at the end of each match, both by the winning and losing teams. Examples by the losing teams to the victors: “You had all the luck”, “The green was not very good” or “The grass was too long and did not suit our woods.” Sometimes the more truthful and more gentlemanly approach: “Well done, you were the better team.” These comments resonate annually around all bowling greens and we have experienced them ourselves quite a few times this season. But it is all in good heart.

As for our season, you can tell from the following results during June there is a mixture of wins and losses with at this stage, the Monday League Team fairing the better.

The men’s draw is going as predicted with Nadal, Federer, Nishikori and Golbis all still charging through any obstacles. The presenters have been waxing lyrical about the classic 2008 final between Federer and Nadal and it’s hard to believe that they’re still, each after injury issues, the top players in the world some 12 years later.

On Sunday, July 8, we held our annual open afternoon. The sun shone, the humidity was high, and made it the perfect day to sample a little tennis with the hint of Pimms in the air. All five of our courts were full from 2-4.30pm with members welcoming new faces having a return to tennis or even trying for the first time. A great afternoon with refreshments, cakes, and assorted other goodies making the afternoon friendly and sociable. A huge thank you to all those who helped on the day and to our new friends for coming along on a very sultry afternoon to see us.

GOLFERS’ DAY IN THE SUN Some readers may have seen in an earlier issue that Stowmarket Golf Centre organised 20 golfing members to take part in the MacMillan Longest Day Golf Challenge.

All the golfers taking part raised sponsorship and those not taking part in the challenge were ‘encouraged’ to donate by penalties being paid for going into bunkers or out of bounds. As this article is being written, the amount raised is in excess of £3,700 with more expected.

Everyone who played started at about 7am in the morning and some were still on the course until 4pm in the afternoon owing to the high numbers of people on the course due to the fine weather.

Most players allowed the MacMillan players through to help shorten their day. All in all, a good time was enjoyed by all who took part and a significant amount of money was raised for MacMillan Cancer Support.

SPORT / CHURCH NEWS STOWMARKET CRICKET CLUB At the time of writing, Stowmarket’s First Team still holds a promotion spot in Two Counties, Division 4, the most recent victory seeing Suffolk junior George Tillbrook score 78 not out. The Seconds, Sunday and Wednesday teams have also enjoyed some competitive fixtures, with many players having come through the junior ranks.

The youth cricket season is drawing to a close and, with the wonderful weather, we’ve completed 20 weeks of coaching and played 30 matches, made possible by excellent coaching from club members and help from parents.

STOWMARKET SNOOKER 2018 proved to be a successful season for the snooker team at Stowmarket RBL. Captained by Steve Standere, the team of Shawn Payne, Harry Cobbold, Duncan Ralph, Martin Scales and Tim Hearing competed in the Bury St Edmunds and District Billiards and Snooker League. After finishing as Division 2 champions, they went on to win the Knockout Cup. This was the first occasion that a lower league team have won this competition.

Even though the season will soon be drawing to a close, we are still keen to attract new members of all ages and abilities (maybe you’ve just moved into the area), including those who would like an occasional game. Individually, there were triumphs for Duncan Ralph over Shawn Payne in the non-handicap snooker final, and for Shawn Payne in the handicap snooker event. In his third final of the season, Shawn Payne and partner Gavin Squirrell narrowly lost in the snooker points.

Although not competing in the individual events, Tim Hearing shared the high break prize for the season.

On the billiards front, Duncan Ralph did well to reach the final of the handicap event. A creditable performance as Duncan has only been playing billiards for two years.

On a very warm Saturday evening we were pleased to welcome the Mayor of Stowmarket, Councillor Linda Baxter and her Consort Shirley Bonner to a concert given by a German choir at our Ipswich Street Church. The audience were treated to a wonderful evening listening to Missa in Jazz, which, as the title suggests, was a mass sung by 60 singers accompanied by a talented jazz quartet. Following the performance, the mayor welcomed the group from the palatinate, thanking them for choosing Stowmarket as part of a short British tour. Interest in her chain of office prompted her to explain her civic duties to the visitors as they enjoyed supper.

Many of our activities take a short summer break, but we continue to hold our popular Thursday coffee mornings between 10am and noon, and our second Saturday coffee mornings between 10.30am and 12.30pm. Serving traditional drinks with the added attraction off bacon rolls and toasted tea cakes for church funds each Thursday, on Saturdays we focus on our charity for the month. We serve delicious cakes with a choice of beverages free of charge with donations going to local worthy causes.

You will also be made most welcome at our Sunday Services in Stowmarket at 10.25am, Stowupland at 10.30am, Mendlesham at 10.45am (alternate weeks) and Haughley Parish Church at 11am on the third Sunday of each month. So come and see what’s on at the U.R.C.

STOWMARKET GOSPEL HALL Our new venture, Tea and Play, has got off to an encouraging start. It’s a group for babies and toddlers with their parents to enjoy some time together.

We are always happy to welcome new families. It’s on Thursday mornings between 10 and 11.30am, but like our other children’s activities there will be a break for the school holidays.

The summer has been amazing so far and we hope it holds for the holidays and the summer camps. We have supported the Norfolk Young People’s Bible Camp at Beeston Regis for many years. Again we will have leaders and campers there. We pay for regular members of our Friday Club to go to camp so that is one good reason to join Friday Club in September (even if it is a long time to YPBC 2019).

The school holidays may be only just starting, but we are already planning for our relaunch in September. We have plans for a special event on September 8 when we’ll be inviting all children and parents for a special Trailblazers with games and a barbecue. Look out for the posters and invites.
