A WORD FROM THE EDITOR As ‘summer’ draws to an end and holidays become a distant memory I think we all need something to make us laugh. I’ve found the perfect thing.

A wonderful little book titled F In Exams by Richard Benson (Published by Summersdale Publications Ltd) has provided much hilarity in my house of late. It’s “full to the brim with funny examples of creative answers from clueless but canny students” and I’ve chosen some of my favourites for you. Enjoy!

Q: What is a nitrate?

A: It is much cheaper than a day rate.

HELPING THE ADULTS OF TOMORROW TO STOP SUFFERING IN SILENCE A new charity in Martlesham to support young people aged 11-25 who are struggling with mental health difficulties launches two exciting fundraising events.

Footsteps Walking with You will offer affordable counselling with professional counsellors for youngsters and their families when little support is available elsewhere. A study by the Mental Health Foundation found that three out of four mental health problems are established by age 24, yet 70% of children and adolescents who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age.

Christine Pinder from the charity said: “We believe that early intervention is key and reaps all sorts of benefits, not only in the short term but also has life-long benefits for good mental health and wellbeing. Our ethos is based in Christianity and we accept clients of all faiths and none, of any race, sexual orientation and gender.”

Footsteps Walking with You have two fundraising events in September to raise awareness and invite everyone to support the charity by attending • Open Garden at Dairy Farm, Brightwell on Sunday, September 10 from 2-5pm. Go along and enjoy the gardens along with tea and cakes. Admission is £4 and under 16s are free.

• Multicultural banquet at St Michael’s Church, Martlesham Heath on Saturday, September 16, 4-6pm. Why not come and enjoy good food from around the world and find out more about Footsteps? Tickets are £20 per adult and under 16s are free; advance purchase is advised.

NEWS KESGRAVE TOWN COUNCIL Speeding Do you worry about the speed of vehicles in Kesgrave? Rushmere St Andrew and Kesgrave are working together to tackle this. County Councillor Robert Whiting used some of his Locality Budget to enable the purchase of equipment so that a Community Speed Watch scheme could be put in place. Speed Watch is a scheme which involves members of the community who are given some basic training and agree to go on a rota to help monitor and report speeding motorists. They give as little or as much time as suits their commitments. Nobody works alone and if you live in Kesgrave but would rather not volunteer where you are known, you can choose to do it in Rushmere St Andrew or vice versa. Currently the response in Rushmere St Andrew has been good and we would like to recruit more from Kesgrave. If you are interested in joining Speed Watch and would like to know more about it, please contact our local PCSO: Michael.Sarbutts@suffolk.pnn.police.uk Kesgrave Town Guide – New and Improved In the past Kesgrave Town Council has put together and distributed a town guide booklet which was a useful reference point for local information. It was particularly helpful for new residents to get to know the town better, but as with all guides, it can only be correct at the time of print.

During September, a new version of the town guide will be distributed to every address in Kesgrave. If you have not received your copy by the end of September, please contact us on 01473 625179.

So what’s new and improved? Inside the printed version there are scanning squares for smartphones which link to a town guide website. This will be updated as facts change and will enable us to provide much more information in a format that is easy to see and use both on smartphone or on your computer screen, with links to external service providers and businesses so that when you follow the link to their website the information will be the most up to date version. While you wait for your printed guide to be delivered, you can check out the website at: www.kesgravetownguide.co.uk The website will be further developed as more information comes to light.

Kesgrave Town Council Website The town council has had a website (www.kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk) for many years which was provided by and regularly updated by Alan Comber. All the information and features that were available on that website will be on the new site which will retain the same web address. The format has changed so that it will also work well on smartphones. It will enable the council to put out information on both the town council and the town guide websites and social media simultaneously. If you would like to know more about what your council does, who your councillors are or would like to attend meetings to see and hear what is happening in your town, this is the website for you.

MID-WEEK WALK On Wednesday, October 11, starting at 10.30am, I will be leading a walk from the footpath opposite the Catholic Church and next to the entrance to Bracken Hall, 230 Main Road. If you will be driving to the start point, we have kindly been given permission to use the car park behind the Catholic Church, sign-posted St William Court, off Ropes Drive East.

I anticipate walking for approximately two hours and returning to our start point. The route we are taking is a variation of Walk 4 of the Parish Walks (available from the town council office) which from the quarry follows the valley to the Park & Ride terminus. So, anyone feeling at this point they have walked far enough, there are plenty of buses serving the A1214 that will take you back to Ropes Drive.

BUS NOTES While I am delighted with the new bus service 68 around Kesgrave and into the hospital grounds, I am very disappointed at First’s lack of enthusiasm about promoting it. Very few buses have had their electronic indicators modified to display the 68 in either direction: even six weeks after its introduction I boarded a bus showing a completely blank indicator. During that six weeks, buses have been showing uninformative indicators such as Shuttle Service, Special Service or just FIRST, or left blank. On a number of occasions I have watched people waiting at stops looking at the approaching bus in puzzlement and letting it pass. In that way a good deal of revenue has been lost which First Buses should have accounted for as indication of the route’s viability. It would be criminal if the service were withdrawn on that excuse.

Another aspect of ignoring the route’s attraction is the continuation of publishing two separate pamphlet-type booklets for all the bus routes to Kesgrave. I have been pressing First for months to include all of them in one book, which could even be promoted as Buses to Kesgrave. But the 64 is lumped in with the 800 Park & Ride service, which now make local stops in Kesgrave so is part of the local service, whereas the local 68 is at the back of the 66 booklet.

This is crazy in several respects. Our local 68 is inter-worked with the 64, which provides the local service along the whole of Main Road. That now runs hourly, but the 64 and 68 jointly provide a 30-minute service to a number of Main Road stops. But the times are to be found in two different books! First’s reply to my complaint about this is “to make these as accessible as possible for the majority of passengers along the route”. That is exactly what having to look at two books does not do! It goes on to say “Trying to combine the 66 and presumably 64 would have produced a very large and unwieldy document indeed”. Rubbish! Tiny Minds: Tiny books!

It is clear that producing two booklets has cost First less than a combined one with a few more pages – and to hell with customers’ convenience.

Community Events and Activities The centre has been working hard to bring a variety of regular activities and events to Kesgrave for the local community to enjoy. These will take place in our sports hall and various function rooms. The aim is to make Kesgrave an even more vibrant place to live by providing a programme of activities and events, along with a good selection of community led events too.

On August 9 a graffiti workshop was held at Millennium Jubilee Hall. Local graffiti artist Aroma provided instruction and the children were shown techniques to decorate baseball caps with their names in graffiti. The results were amazing and caps customized by Aroma were awarded to the two best designs. The session was arranged by Kesgrave Town Council who would like to thank SPARK (Sport and recreation in Kesgrave) for their financial support.

‘BAGS OF HELP’ FOR CEDARWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL The PFC of Cedarwood Primary School are delighted to have been selected as one of three finalists in the Bags of Help scheme in local Tesco stores to receive a grant of either £4k, £2k or £1k. Voting will take place between September 1 and October 31 and we would love your support.

The Bags of Help scheme will enable us to develop a rich, dynamic outdoor environment for all ages to promote learning and creativity as being outdoors has a positive impact on all aspects of a child’s development.

The foundation area at the front of the school is a focal point for our visitors and we are fortunate to have a beautiful oak tree which provides a natural centre for our learning. We would like to develop the area around the tree to further create habitats for wildlife and a safe and inspiring environment for the children to explore. The ground around the tree requires development as the area is dusty and dry during the summer and a muddy bog in the winter.

New surfacing would provide an eco-friendly, flexible surface which can be used in many different ways throughout the year.

We wish to have raised planters for the children to grow their own produce in and create areas to encourage new wildlife. The oak tree creates a natural pathway to another area of the garden which we would like to develop by building a bridge to capture the children’s imagination. This project would turn the area into an exciting space where children have the freedom to explore, use their senses and be physically active.

Should we be fortunate enough to receive the full grant of £4k this will provide the surfacing and planters and will help us on our way to developing a wonderful space within our school. We would be extremely grateful if you could help us achieve this amazing project by voting for us by popping a blue token (or two) in our box and spreading the word to friends and family.

OUT & ABOUT MARTLESHAM HEATH AVIATION SOCIETY Friday, September 1, 7.30pm: Contact Patrols – Air Support for the Infantry in The Great War by Mike Meech

KESGRAVE CO-OP WOMEN’S GUILD On Tuesday, July 11, Phil Holmes gave an illustrated talk on his safaris in Africa. He showed some beautiful photographs of the many wild animals he had seen on his travels. We also saw the lodges he and his wife had stayed in and the interesting local people and guides they had met.

The committee provided a marvelous buffet for our birthday party on Tuesday, July 25. One of our long standing members, Ruby Lee (pictured), cut the beautiful cake and we had time to catch up with friends and enjoy a drink and food on the last evening before our break in August.

NEXT MEETINGS Tuesday, October 3: Peter Regelous will talk about his life in the entertainment industry. He will recall some of the people he came across during those years and with anecdotes galore, he will tell us some of the best and worst experiences that he has encountered along the way. Peter has been in many sit-coms, soaps and advertisements.

Tuesday, October 31: Carol Pryke and her husband will be giving a talk about the Pets as Therapy (PAT) work they do. Summer, their golden retriever and a PAT dog, will be with them. Volunteers with their pets bring joy, comfort and companionship to many individuals in care homes and clubs who appreciate being able to touch and stroke a friendly animal.

The guild welcomes new members who can visit for two meetings before joining. The annual membership is £15 and we charge £2.50 a meeting to include raffle tickets and refreshments. Meetings start at 7.15pm in the community centre.

By 1915 British Expeditionary Force Commanders realised that communication problems inherent in trench warfare meant once an attack had started they lost control of the battle as communication failed due to the poor technology available. One method to partially overcome this was aeroplane ‘Contact Patrols’, first used seriously by the British during the Battle of the Somme 1916. The talk covers the evolution and methods used to try and make the system work. The second half of the talk gives details of work undertaken at Butley.

MARTLESHAM LADIES CLUB Our coffee morning in June was very successful. The weather was perfect so everyone could enjoy sitting in the garden with their coffee after visiting the various stalls. We raised £370, bringing our total for the year to £645 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Jane Oliver, one of their representatives, joined us for the morning and will also attend our next meeting to receive a cheque for the charity.

The first meeting of the new season will be on September 7 when Paula Justa will return to tell us what happens to the materials which are sent for recycling. On September 21 Brian Russell will recount some of the humorous incidents which occurred while he was an after dinner speaker. On October 5 Ted Wheatley will give a talk entitled Overland to India on a Vespa.

MARTLESHAM HISTORY SOCIETY Monday, October 16: The Rendlesham Project by Faye Minter Bede, an English monk writing in the eighth century, mentioned an East Anglian Royal settlement at Rendlesham. Is this royal settlement of the people buried at Sutton Hoo? Come along and find out.

ORWELL PROBUS CLUB We meet for lunch at Rushmere Golf Club on the second Thursday of each month after which a speaker entertains us. In August we held our annual summer garden party for 80 members and guests which was a great success despite some gusty wind which involved some holding onto marquee poles.

Probus clubs provide an opportunity for active retired or semi-retired gentlemen to attend regular meetings and enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded people who appreciate similar interests. Some Probus clubs are for men only, as we are, others are for ladies and some mixed. We have social events, outings and holidays which, of course, include spouses, partners and friends.

The group’s last volunteer work party before the summer break focussed on the maintenance of the hazel area intended to eventually provide a habitat for dormice. The whole area was totally overgrown with bracken, thorns and stinging nettles after the recent wet weather which all needed to be cleared to allow the trees space to grow.

Thank you also for the help of a BT team building event and all involved. They cleared the northern tumulus from vegetation meaning we are getting ever closer to being granted English Heritage approval for the two tumuli in the woods. Because of their hard work the group can now focus on other areas of the woods.

Conservation is a perfect team building exercise because it enhances communication and problem solving skills and also gives everyone a sense of achievement knowing that you have made a difference to your community.

HUMPTY DUMPTY PLAYGROUP Playgroup returns on Wednesday, September 6.

We will be starting the autumn term by looking at classic children’s books such as The Gingerbread Man, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Gruffalo and Going on a Bear Hunt, to name a few. Through the weekly books, we will be supporting the children’s leaning in fun and differentiated ways. By following the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, and ensuring activities implemented fulfil the seven areas of learning in fun and meaningful ways, we aim to capture each child’s imagination to develop high rates of progress to support their learning, confidence and independence.

We are an Ofsted registered childcare provider for children from the age of two years onwards. As we are registered as ‘Good’ we can provide funded places for two-year-old children who have received ‘Golden Tickets’ from Suffolk County Council.

From September 2017 we will be providing 30 hours of free childcare to children who are eligible the term after their third birthday. SCHOOLS BRIGHT STARS Fun activity sessions for pre-school aged children from 10.30am-noon on the second and fourth Mondays of each month during term times at St Michael’s Church Centre, Martlesham Heath IP5 3PL. Youngsters aged 0-5 are welcome to come along to Bright Stars for a fun start to the week with their parents, grandparents, friends, family and/or carers.

These mornings are free and usually involve singing, games, making crafts to take home and telling stories from the Bible for the first half hour. We then have refreshments when the adults can chat and the children can play until approximately noon.

SPORT / CHURCH NEWS KESGRAVE, NORTHGATE & ASSOCIATED IPSWICH WANDERERS FC The opening league match at home to Walsham Le Willows saw a recordKARATE CLUB On June 25 a small team from Northgate attended the Karate Kid Championships in Walthamstow with our sole representative being Ruby Hunt. Ruby fought extremely well winning her first fight 5-3 although she was up against a tricky opponent. Ruby dominated in her second fight to win 4-0. The final was a close fought match, but Ruby’s persistence saw her come away with a 3-0 victory and well deserved gold. Well done Ruby and many thanks to both Gerry and Teliah Turner for their support and coaching.

Ruby was also selected to represent the 1011 girls team Midlands Region in the Interregional Championship on July 23 in Leicester.

She won all her fights against the Northern, South East and South West regions ensuring her team won maximum points for Midland Region which went on to win the competition overall.

Team Northgate also had a squad at the Central England Open competition in Worcester on July 2. Lilly Melton and Emma Buckley took home a bronze in team kata while Lauren Berry achieved silver in individual kata.

We are one of the few clubs who pay the competition entry fees for our squad (most clubs expect their competitors to pay for their own entries) and we also organise training with world-class athletes at subsidised fees to enhance the skills of our students. None of this would be possible without the generous support of our club sponsors for which we are very grateful. This month we would like to say a massive thank you to Ipswich Audi for their sponsorship of the club.

Family friendly race night at Greshams We are also trying to raise funds to support Northgate, Kesgrave and Associated Club students to compete in Estonia in February, which will be a great opportunity for them to compete in an international competition. So we are holding a family friendly race night at Greshams on Saturday, September 23 to help raise funds. These events are fun for all the family as everyone is able to take part. The hall holds 220 people so please spread the word as this is open to everyone. Tickets cost £2.50 each and there will be eight races with eight horses per race. There will be a prize for each race winner.

Greshams have kindly offered to lay on bar meals to purchase and you will be able to pre-order food. breaking attendance at The Doucy. The crowd of 172 was the highest attendance for an opening home fixture at Ipswich Wanderers. Together with the Kesgrave end in fine voice, this was a reward for all the time and effort put in by the band of Wanderers volunteers over the last months.

It was the visitors who responded first, going ahead just after half-time, but backed by the big support it was fitting that the home side equalised through midfielder Darius Laws just minutes from the final whistle.

We seem to be starting the season with a number of key players nursing injuries and therefore side-lined. This was clear to the 30 or so Wanderers fans who ventured to Hullbridge for our FA Cup opener. A very young and inexperienced Wanderers team took on a capable Essex side and struggled to make any impact, losing 5-1. Our fantastic away support dwarfed the home contingent, but we returned disappointed after this lacklustre display, punctuated by individual errors. The only bright spot was early in the second half when substitute James Watling scored our only goal. Manager Shane Wardley will be looking for a far better return from his squad as the league season unfolds.

It is so exciting to discover someone else’s skills, and to watch them grow in confidence, just as it is wonderful when somebody sees something in you and invests in your own development… this happened in my joining All Saints 10 years ago, and it was the best decision I ever made. Declaring God’s Way - Sharing His Love As I write we are still at the height of the summer season, and for some it is holiday time. By the time you are reading this, August will have passed us by and the children will be thinking about going back to school with happy memories of their long summer holiday. Once we reach September we begin to think of another season. Although it heralds the approach of winter, autumn is a lovely time of year, with all the various colours of the countryside and the leaves of the trees changing colour as they fall. This time of year reminds us of the changing seasons and the promise made by God – that “summer and winter, seed time and harvest will never cease”. The Harvest Thanksgiving services in many of our churches take place in early October. Nowadays, the fruits of the earth are distributed to needy people as we share God’s love in different ways in the community around us.

All our activities recommence in September, as can be seen below.

We will be having a church weekend away from September 8-10 when we have the opportunity to share fellowship and worship from Friday until Sunday. There will be a visiting speaker and as well as the worship times, there will be opportunity to get to know folk better, share in various activities and have time to chat and relax with our church family. There will be no services at Rushmere Baptist Church on Sunday, September 10.

IT’S HOW WE FINISH THAT COUNTS

Our usual activities are as follows.

I, like a lot of us I suppose, recently watched the World Athletics Championships in London. I was struck by two contrasting races: the final of the men’s 100 meters and the final of the men’s 10,000 meters. The first being a sprint where a bad start could lose runners the race and the second being a much longer race where despite being buffeted several times during the race, Mo still emerged the winner. This is a lot like life.

The Bible talks about Paul wanting to finish running the race to attain the prize, this race being more like a long distance one rather than a sprint.

Starting badly does not disqualify us from finishing and thus ‘winning’. Also we must expect to be buffeted along the way, but this should not stop us finishing the race either. In fact, it doesn’t matter how we start, just how we finish that counts.

If you would like to hear more about running the race that is the Christian life, please feel free to drop in and see us on any Sunday morning and join as for worship as we meet and prepare each other to continue running the face of faith. We meet in Heath Primary School, Bell Lane, Kesgrave at 10.30am.
