Academic year 2023/24
Principal’s report
Helen Mountfield KC

Welcome to Mansfield’s first College Record - a new annual publication dedicated to recording the events and achievements of each academic year.
It has been an exceptionally busy and momentous year for Mansfield in many ways. As we reflect on the year and the stories and achievements of the people within our community, I feel an enormous sense of pride. Pride in our students – bringing new perspectives and experiences; shaping our community and making it their own; and leaving us celebrating their remarkable achievements after years of hard work.
In our academics – moving forward global thought and understanding in their fields; recognised for their excellence both within the University community and the wider world In our alumni - who go on to share their talents and expertise with others, some in prominent roles in public life, but also in less visible, but no less meaningful, ways.
This summer has seen our students achieve excellent final exam results once again. A total of 25 have graduated with first class degrees and Mansfielders featured very strongly in the list of University prizes, perhaps most notably winning the Gibbs Prize for the top first in
Theology & Religion, and the top first in Philosophy & Theology (see p29) This is a remarkable testament to their incredible hard work We are immensely proud of each and every one of our leavers and wish them well with the next stage of their lives
This year we launched our biggest and most ambitious fundraising campaign to dateFor Mansfield. Forever.- in March, and we are immensely grateful to our lead benefactor alumnus Chris Foster (Maths, 1997) for his incredible gift of £25 million in support of all three pillars of our campaign: People; Place; and Culture. Just before the start of the 2024/25 academic year, I was thrilled to accompany Chris and his wife Kat as he was welcomed as a Fellow of the Chancellor’s Court of Benefactors within the University of Oxford We will welcome Chris and his family to Mansfield to bestow his Bancroft Fellowship, in Michaelmas term, in formal recognition of this landmark gift to our College.
Sadly, some key figures in the Mansfield community passed away this year. We lost two of our former Principals - David Marquand and Dennis Trevelyan - and our former Chaplain, the Rev Charles Brock (see obituaries on p27). We remember them all with fondness and gratitude.
This past academic year has also seen us bid farewell to two Mansfield Fellows: Lucinda Rumsey, after 34 years as a Fellow and 17 years as Senior Tutor, and Professor Joel Rasmussen, after 14 years as a Fellow in Theology. We owe them both an enormous debt of gratitude for their contributions to College, and particularly Lucinda’s work in taking forward the Access to Excellence initiative pioneered by Professor David Marquand and Dr Janet Dyson.
An important feature of the year has been in progressing our compelling plans for the redevelopment of our College site to ensure our community can thrive for the next 140 years and more Thanks to the transformative philanthropic support of Chris Foster, Guy Hands (PPE, 1978) and Julia Hands MBE, our campaign board, and many others we are building a secure future – and providing a more welcoming and supportive home to our students than has ever been possible before.
There are exciting times ahead as we welcome new Fellows in the new 2024/25 academic year: Tutorial Fellow in Computer Science, Professor Sara Bernardini, a worldleading expert in automatic planning and AI research; Associate Professor and Tutorial Fellow in Statistics, Thomas Rainforth, whose research focuses on machine learning and experimental design; and Tutorial Fellow in History, Dr Lyndsey Jenkins, whose research focuses on modern British women and politics, and brings with her a prestigious Arts and Humanities Research Council grant to research the history of the introduction of the Sex Discrimination Act 1976 – a subject very close to my own professional interests and heart.
I am delighted that Mansfield continues to attract such eminent leaders in their fields

and, at the time of writing, I was thrilled to learn that Professor Stephen Blundell, Mansfield’s Professorial Fellow in Physics, has been awarded the 2024 Institute of Physics Lawrence Bragg Medal. Mansfield leading the way, as ever.

We continue to contribute to, and be admired and respected across, the University Our lead on widening participation to Oxford remains undisputed and receives increasing recognition in the sector The work of our brilliant academics continues to be recognised: Professor Jenn Strawbridge was shortlisted for the Vice-Chancellor’s awards for innovation in teaching, and our Janet Dyson Fellow in Mathematics, Professor Ian Griffiths’ work with maths-qualified refugees and asylum seekers picked up a mention in the Vice-Chancellor’s oration at the start of Michaelmas term 2024.
Mansfield is, and always will be, a gamechanger, a place of welcome, a place to share and develop ideas, to challenge openly, and to respect others’ perspectives: a place where our community is encouraged to disagree well An institution which stands for these values is always important, and particularly so in these globally troubling times.
I am lucky to be the Principal of such a College.
Bursar’s report
Clem Brohier
The 2023/24 academic year began with a set of stretching targets - nevertheless, we have made significant and positive progress.
It has been a hugely important year for the development of the Mansfield College Estate Transformation Project, for which we have been following the RIBA Plan of Work. This exciting project represents a generational shift from simply maintaining our heritage to transforming it in a way that ensures we continue to thrive in a modern context. Through transforming the estate, we aim to create inclusive and accessible community and academic spaces, provide more on-site accommodation for students, enhance our historic surroundings, and achieve our net zero carbon goal by 2050
In 2022, we concluded the RIBA Stage 1 feasibility study. In 2023, Governing Body (GB) approved extending this to RIBA Stage 1+ - involving the creation of a detailed Estate Development Strategy (EDS) for the College, and this was completed in June 2024.
In Stage 1+, the project team focused on feasibility and capacity testing. Town Hall meetings were held to share findings, consult, and allow members of GB, staff, and students to ask questions At the end of Stage 1+, GB confirmed progression to RIBA Stage 2: Concept Design This will conclude in December 2024 and, in January 2025, GB will determine progression to RIBA Stage 3: Technical Design
During the year, business-as-usual continued through several committees, including:

The Finance and Resources Committee: financial reporting; financial and resources management; development and alumni relations; internal controls and risk management; external audit.
The Estate Development Sub-Committee: for the Estate Transformation Project
The Joint Consultative Committee: meeting with student representatives, and administrative and operational staff to discuss emerging issues
The Environment Sustainability Working Group: enabling staff and students to work together on environmental initiatives supporting our sustainability strategy.
Other areas of note include:
The development of the strategic risk register to capture causes and effects relating to risks and mitigations. Budget holders were given access to online financial reports to enable them to be better informed when putting together forecasts and budget submissions New systems were implemented for accommodation and finance, and work began on the initial stages of a project to replace the room booking system
We ended the year exceeding targets, making a financial return that improved our overall financial position. In summary, this was mostly attributed to better procurement, improved conference income, unrestricted donations, good returns on increased investments, and a release of the defined benefit pension provision.
Development Director’s report
Tess McCormick
This has been a landmark year for Mansfield and the work of the Development and Alumni Relations team, with a full programme of alumni events, and the launch of the most significant fundraising campaign in the College’s history, including announcing a transformational and historic donation from Chris Foster (Maths, 1997).
The For Mansfield. Forever. campaign was launched in March 2024, at a special event held at the London Stock Exchange Group and generously hosted by James Pearson (PPE, 1993). We also launched the campaign in New York in May 2024 at the offices of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co at 30 Hudson Yards, also generously hosted by Josh Weisenbeck (VSP, 2002) and his wife Janine
The campaign is the most ambitious and furthest-reaching in the College’s history –aiming to endow the College’s core teaching,

research, and operational posts (People), raise the capital required for a transformational redevelopment of the College site (Place), and both secure and enhance our access and student support provision (Culture).
Announcements on social media and our newly relaunched website happened concurrently with the launch Mansfield Magazine was also circulated in the same month, as a bumper ‘Campaign Edition’
The public launch of the campaign followed an extensive and successful ‘quiet phase’ which culminated in a landmark donation of £25 million from Chris Foster. With his gift –the largest in Mansfield’s history – Chris sought to support all three pillars of the campaign, ensuring that Mansfield was fully-equipped to find and support generations of students to come.
The campaign, and our new way of telling Mansfield’s story, has already had a fantastic response from alumni and well beyond –receiving significant positive attention on social media, and resulting in the Principal being interviewed in the national press and national and international broadcast media Key media pieces included The Guardian and The Times, an interview on Sky News, and ARD German Television - in total reaching millions.
Principal Helen Mountfield and Chris Foster (Maths 1997) at the March Campaign Launch in London.
Major benefactions are critical to Mansfield’s success, but no less important is the work of inspiring as many alumni as possible to support their College at the level that feels meaningful to them We encourage this through fundraising efforts such as telethons, email and direct mail campaigns, and Giving Days In July 2024 we held our fourth Giving Day, and our first deploying the campaign branding and assets It was our most successful to date, raising over £150,000 from more than 160 donors. Gifts in supporters’ Wills are proving increasingly important and forthcoming, with more alumni choosing to inform us that they have remembered Mansfield in their Will.
The Sarah Glover Society, the recognition group for those who have remembered Mansfield in their Will, now stands at 58 members and is growing all the time Mansfield has also received a number of gifts in Wills from kind alumni and supporters, which we will celebrate and honour in line with their wishes
The Mansfield community reaches from the heart of Oxford to every corner of the world, and building and supporting that community is central to the work of our team. We are in touch with c.5,500 alumni around the world, and we engage them in the life of the College today through a programme of varied and

appealing events, gatherings, and communications, both in-person and online
Highlights of this year’s events programme include the Gaudy for 1990s alumni, London Drinks at the Oxford and Cambridge Club, and the Summer Garden Party - including a newly established Benefactors’ Dinner, an evening event focused on thanking the College’s community of supporters which was attended by 54 alumni and guests
This year, with support and championship from alumnus Simon Giddings (Physics, 1989), the team launched Mansfield Lives, a project to collect and preserve alumni memories in digital form, capturing a history of Mansfield as ‘lived’ by its students and staff The collection will be similar to an online archive, published on the College website, to last in perpetuity as a record of former students’ experiences of Mansfield.
The work of the Development and Alumni Relations team is only possible through the support of the entire Mansfield team – and so we extend our sincere thanks to all Fellows, staff, students, and members of our alumni community for their enthusiastic support during this historic moment in the College’s history.

As a result of her interviews in The Guardian and The Times earlier in the week, Helen was invited onto Matt Barbet’s Sunday morning show on Sky News on 17 March to share her views on fairer university admissions.
Senior Tutor’s report
Lucinda Rumsey

This is my last Senior Tutor’ am leaving Mansfield soon. this report for the College M I worried about the Norringt where we were on it. I didn’t it was a flawed way of ranki Mansfield had held a mid-ta few years, at which point I t complain from a position of confidence Since then, Mansfield reached fifth place one year, and most years we have been comfortably mid-table Given our comparative resources, this is an impressive result
The pandemic’s impact on traditional forms of assessment, and changes in the way the University runs examinations, make the final confirmation of results a slow business. It is easier now to focus on the success of our students, look at their progress through their degrees, and think less about the rankings (although if you still like to know the statistics, I think we will be mid-table in 2024).
A total of 25 of our students got first class degrees this year, with excellence spread across every subject, including five firsts in PPE, four in each of Geography and History, and three in each of English and Law There is a fine crop of University prizes in 2024 Mansfield students won the Gibbs prize for the top first in Theology & Religion and the top first in Philosophy & Theology, and for
the best Theology & Religion
Thesis Our Geographers won the Linda McDowell Prize for the best Critical Human Geography Dissertation, and the JCA Meldrum Fieldwork Prize for the
eography Fieldwork Report, ur Law finalists were awarded izes. One of our Maths third IMA Prize, and four of our ents received Armourers’ and pany awards for prelims, nd third year assessments. first years were awarded distinctions in prelims
I have written 15 of these Senior Tutor’s reports, and regular readers will notice that I am not particularly good at injecting drama and variety into the annual academic story I tell you the year’s highlights, but it is very much the same narrative. As a College we are often asked what new story we have to tell and what we are doing that is different. I find it hard to pitch a new story, because I think that in many ways, we do the same things we have always done, and for the same reasons. Our core purpose as tutors is to learn and teach, and to help students to learn and to use what they learn When that works really well, as in the list of successes above, it is a pleasure to commend it At Scholars and Exhibitioners’ dinner I tell students that tutors celebrate academic success because we appreciate how difficult it is to achieve But I also tell them there is a practical reason we give scholars a long gown; it will keep them warm when they spend long hours in the library.
We give them a fancy celebration dinner because sometimes they will have missed going out, or eating dinner, because they were working late When we applaud the success, we also applaud the work that students do to achieve it
We know that not every student who works very hard gets a first, and some students are disappointed when work that has taken every bit of their energy does not seem to be acknowledged in the marks they get. It can take a while to get perspective and to know that the work was worth it and that a degree is not just summative (a set of marks) but formative (of you).
We know that Oxford University is impressive, but the most important and indelible impression is the one made on every individual student who takes their own path to their degree
I have selfishly saved the last words of this report to say thank you to all the students, past and present, who, when they heard I was leaving, sent me notes, emails, and videos. I feel very lucky to have worked with you, and I am proud of you beyond words.
Thank you.

Mansfield has appointed Associate Professor in Late Medieval History, Dr Helen Lacey, as incoming Senior Tutor.
Helen said: “I am excited to take on this role and work closely with Mansfield’s staff and students. In particular, I look forward to continuing the access and outreach agenda which Lucinda Rumsey pioneered. Mansfield excels at championing widening participation, and this makes it a special place to work.”

Tutor for Graduates’ report
Dr Chris Salamone
We were delighted to welcome 92 new postgraduate students for the 2023/24 academic year and see the community continue to thrive at Mansfield. Our course offerings increased to complement existing subject cohorts and develop opportunities for exciting cross-disciplinary engagements.
We welcomed our first students on the MSc in Social Data Science, a multi-disciplinary course run by the Oxford Internet Institute focusing on the application of quantitative and computational methods to questions of social and political significance. Also starting in 2023/24 were graduates on the new MSc in Digital Scholarship Spanning disciplines across the Humanities Division, the MSc develops students’ technical skills and critical thinking in the area of digital humanities
Increasing scholarship opportunities for those wishing to embark on postgraduate degrees is a vital part of Mansfield’s graduate access initiative. In 2023/24 Mansfield expanded its provision of funding by welcoming our first UKRI-Jocelyn Bell Burnell Scholar, an award established to support women undertaking STEM research. Our exciting funding partnership with the Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx) began, too, with three scholarships for students on postgraduate taught courses We are proud that, thanks to donor support, we can work with AfOx to help further diversity within Oxford and champion equitable access to graduate study In keeping with our close

engagement with the Bonavero Institute, the McBain Scholarship that will fund students on the MSc in International Human Rights Law was fully endowed thanks to the support of Alastair McBain (Oriental Studies, 1974). We renewed our participation in the University’s Academic Futures scholarship programme for 2023/24, too, welcoming a new scholar on a postgraduate taught course thanks to generous donor backing Mansfield also co-funded three new prestigious Clarendon Partnership awards this year; these provided funding to graduates enrolled on a range of courses (MSt in Religions; DPhil in Geography and the Environment; DPhil in Statistics).
Finally, as a College of Sanctuary, we underpinned the global aspect of our graduate access strategy by expanding our partnership with the Weidenfeld-Hoffman Trust (WHT) from seven to eight Kofi Annan Scholars, with a WHT-Hope scholarship established to fund graduates from displaced backgrounds, thanks to the support of Jan Fischer (PPE, 1989) Much credit is due to Mansfield’s Development
and Academic Offices, and our generous donors, for helping set up these scholarship opportunities for the 2023/24 cohort.
We were thrilled to see postgraduates succeed academically on both taught and research courses [see p30-31], with students also receiving departmental awards for academic excellence in Law (John Gardner Prize for Philosophical Foundations of the Common Law) and English (Charles Oldham Shakespeare Prize). Our doctoral students continue to blaze new paths in their respective fields. To celebrate this, in 2023 we brought back the tradition of inviting doctoral students who have finished their degree to a termly DPhil Dinner at High Table, at which SCR members meet and congratulate them on their accomplishments. Across the three terms, the SCR hosted recently completed doctoral students in Engineering, Atomic and Laser Physics, Particle Physics, and Material Science, and it was a pleasure to find out more about their ground-breaking research
The completion and class of a degree tell only part of the rich story of each student’s
time at Mansfield. Our graduates have flourished in their contributions to the College community. This is especially clear at our termly MCR/SCR Michael Mahony Seminars In 2023/24 these gave a forum in which to hear fascinating papers from the following DPhil students, early career academics, and professorial fellows:
Michaelmas term 2023
Jonathan Young (DPhil Theology): ‘The Spirituality of Animals in the Roman Empire: ‘Pagan’, Jewish, and Christian Views’ .
Jimmy Jia (SCR MBA Advisor & DPhil in Sustainable Finance): ‘How to Count: Green House Gas Emissions and the Financial Sector’.
Hilary term 2024
Anya Gleizer (DPhil Geography): ‘Lighting Togo Inen in the Ethnographic Museum: An Evenki Reconciliation Ritual at the Pitt Rivers’
Professor Paul Lodge (Professorial Fellow in Philosophy): ‘We Need to Talk About Neurodivergence and Madness’ .
Trinity term 2024
Cerise Jackson (DPhil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies): ‘Black Anime: Making a Translational Space in Japanese Studies’ .
Professor Andrew Gosler, Professor of Ethno-ornithology: ‘Darwin and the Fuegians, Ethno-ornithology and Human Rights’
Thanks are due to those who presented papers and the engaged audiences who attended Postgraduates also joined the cast of speakers for our twice-termly Shakespeare play-reading evenings, which across two terms saw us enjoy The Comedy of Errors, Henry V, Julius Caesar, and Twelfth Night It has been a pleasure to see an international group of postgraduates take part in each of these alongside our undergraduate cohort (and staff!). For many, these social occasions constitute a brave first foray into reading Shakespeare aloud in a group. It is a reminder that personal achievements at Mansfield arrive in a myriad of forms to be celebrated.

Access and outreach report
Sarah Large, McBain Access Officer
The 2023/24 academic year has been full of exciting projects but it has also been bittersweet. We said goodbye to Lucinda Rumsey, who retired from Mansfield. She has been a great support and warm presence here. I am excited to continue her outreach legacy with Helen Lacey, the new Senior Tutor, and Helen Brooks, our Registrar and Director of Admissions.
Over the past year, we have embarked on our partnership with a local Oxford primary school, St John Fisher in Littlemore, through the Oxford Hub’s Twinning Programme. The goal of this initiative is to address the attainment gap in Oxford city and support our local community
This year we ran six enrichment visits to Mansfield for Years 1-6 which included Earth Sciences workshops, Latin learning, and visits to the Museum of Natural History (below) In addition to enrichment visits, 28 Mansfield students got involved in tutoring the Year 6

class in English and Maths. I am looking forward to continuing the enrichment visits and embarking on new projects with St John Fisher. Current plans include a Christmas Carol Concert in our Chapel Hall!
This was our first year as part of this programme and we are delighted by the bond we have built with Mansfield College. Opening the College to us, and our school to their students, has shown our children what is achievable on their doorstep. As much as we have all loved the creative ways Mansfield has managed to link workshops to our curriculum areas, I think the highlight was our Year 1 children getting to sit and eat in the grand dining hall, a far cry from our lunch facilities! I really look forward to growing this partnership further and have nothing but praise for an innovative and proactive way to bridge the town and gown divide
Paul Higgins, Headteacher at St John Fisher
Visiting the Oxford Natural History Museum
Partnering with departments across the University for subject-specific outreach events has also been a big focus this year. We always try to ensure our events have an educational benefit, as well as giving students an idea of what Oxford is really like Our Humanities Study Day (below, right) focused on the theme ‘Monster Hunt: an exploration of monsters through time and in texts’
Participants took part in English, History, and Theology academic sessions, and visited the Pitt Rivers Museum. In August, we held Galvanize, which was an event for Year 12 female and non-binary students interested in studying STEM at university. It is really gratifying watching young people have the opportunity to learn about something they are enthusiastic about.
The academic year 2024/25 is looking just as busy for access and outreach As well as continuing our existing provision, we are planning targeted events for careexperienced students who are considerably less likely to progress to higher education than their peers. Future projects include partnering with Become (the leading national charity for children in care and careexperienced young people) to deliver a webinar series and working with London Virtual Schools to plan a trip to Mansfield.
In addition, we aim to widen our reach and enable more schools to visit Mansfield. One of the biggest challenges for schools is that they often struggle with travel costs To tackle this, we are collaborating with Gonville and Caius College Cambridge to run subsidised multischool visits to Oxford and Cambridge for our shared London boroughs These visits will enable 240 pupils from 24 schools to visit Mansfield. As well as running multi-school visits, we hope to be able to offer individual schools some funding to offset high travel
costs. We know the impact of seeing Mansfield in person and being able to chat to current students, and we want even more students to have this opportunity
As I am writing this, early in Michaelmas term of the new academic year, I am currently training a new set of student ambassadors to help with our outreach events. We always ask them what advice they would have given their 17-year-old self. “Do your research” is always a common suggestion but something that also comes up repeatedly is: “have faith in yourself and your abilities”.
Lucinda
Rumsey delivering a workshop on our Humanities Study Day
I am sure that the atmosphere at Mansfield will do a lot to cultivate this confidence and I hope that my outreach work this coming year does the same for prospective students
176 access visits
5,000+ students seen
I just want to thank you for this opportunity. It makes me feel more confident in choosing History
Humanities Study Day participant

JCR report

Daisy O’Connell (Geography, 2022), JCR President
Throughout the year, the Junior Common Room (JCR) has continued to pursue our commitment to access, inclusivity, and welfare via many initiatives. Much of this work has been inward-facing, reflecting on our own work as a JCR and how we can better cater for the undergraduates here. Firstly, we edited our constitution, adding new Bench roles, including a Class Officer and a Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Officer post We also enshrined an independent charity levy to raise money for chosen charities, as well as a designated arts and drama fund to help members pursue creative projects at the University.
We’ve run several events and initiatives targeted at underrepresented groups at Oxford and the UK more broadly. These included a disco following the Diwali Formal, a collection initiative to gather donations of essentials for Freshers to lower moving costs, and LGBTQ+ film nights with the Film Society. We also pledged to stop using the term ‘scout’ and gave tips to students on how to help the housekeeping team
Thirdly, we continue to offer a range of social activities. From new events such as a summer garden gathering on the Quad and Mansfield Arts Week to classics such as Champagne and Chocolates, all to allow students to take a break from their studies in a fun and friendly environment.
The JCR has also looked outward, addressing wider social issues within the University Our social media posts focus on demystifying studying at Oxford, using Instagram reels to reach a wider audience which resulted in tripling engagement and our top reel reaching 2,000 accounts.
We have also endorsed the Student Union’s College Disparity Report which highlights intercollegiate inequality and resolves to create an endowment fund to redistribute wealth across colleges. We will continue to advocate for greater equality within the University, ensuring that clever and engaged students from all areas of society not only get to Oxford but can thrive once they are here
MCR report
Karim
Alaa El-Din (DPhil Atomic & Laser Physics, 2022), MCR President
The academic year 2023/24 was a successful one for Mansfield College's Middle Common Room (MCR).
Beyond significant improvements to the infrastructure available to students (in the form of new furnishings), we also ran an array of social events throughout the year From formal exchanges and wine & cheese nights to movie and board game evenings, we covered a range of different types of events accessible to all our students, no matter whether they like to drink alcohol or not.
The efforts of the MCR Bench also allowed for the expansion of welfare provisions, through financial and material contributions as well as through dedicated welfare events such as brunches. In addition, large events were held each term, celebrating our time together at Mansfield.
These began with the freshers' week packed full of events, continuing with the Halloween party and termly MCR-SCR dinners, and culminated in our annual boat party cruising down the Isis

Throughout this entire period, we have made sure to improve the budgeting and financial footing of the MCR, to ensure that we operate debt over tim to increase many of the provisions we were able to make, by pricing tickets to events more carefully.
Finally, a more robust handover process was put in place, allowing future committees to begin operating more efficiently at the start of their term Overall, we were able to break even across the academic year and have prepared the MCR to start the next academic year on the best possible footing.

For Women’s Football, the joint Mansfield-Merton Women’s Football team merged with Wadham College this year to form Wertonfield FC (below). They had a large influx of new members due to a successful taster event during Freshers Fair. The team managed to make it to both the Plate and the Cuppers finals, just barely losing in the penalties. They also won the Futsal Cuppers so, overall, it was a successful year.

For the Table Tennis Society, they have continued to have weekly sessions and some coaching as well as their termly tournaments. There were also two table tournaments held in collaboration with the JCR Sports and Societies Officer These events were open to everyone and were very popular among the students!
The year 2023 saw the re-formation of the Mansfield College Tennis Society (right) Over the year, the Tennis Society grew in popularity, hosting weekly sessions and coaching, and taking part in the Sports Day.

The Mansfield-Merton Hockey team has continued to have weekly hockey sessions throughout term-time Notable events included a special alumni game in Trinity term followed by an alumni dinner, covered by the Bonchristiano fund They also had a successful fresher’s induction event in Week 0 They even made it all the way to the semifinals after winning against Catz-Somerville!
This year, the Mansfield-Merton Badminton Club saw a significant increase in the number of students taking part in the weekly training sessions. The Club hired a coach in Michaelmas (covered by the Bonchristiano fund) helping them perform very well over the year. They even won the Division One Men’s League and got to the quarter-final of the Women’s Cuppers tournament!

MCBC report

Ruby Mullin (Geography, 2021) and Eva Hassan (Engineering Science, 2020), Co-Presidents
Mansfield College Boat Club (MCBC) has gone from strength to strength during the season Many existing squad members returned as experienced rowers, fuelled by the success of the Women’s First VIII winning blades in Torpids 2023 and eager for more We were also joined by many new rowers from the JCR and MCR

Early weeks of Michaelmas term found us enjoying our return to the Isis and welcoming a new coaching team, who immediately got to work introducing our novices to the basics and brushing off the cobwebs for our seniors. Sadly, October brought months of heavy rain which burst the banks of the river and pushed the flow speeds to unsafe levels. Despite limited water time, the strength and fitness of our squads improved, and many rowers threw themselves into group ergs, social runs, and tank sessions as a welcome outlet from study.

MCBC performed extremely well in the Isis Winter League. The men’s boat came in the top five boats in every race, ranking fifth among the colleges, and the women’s boat came first place in every race (that wasn’t klaxoned!), topping the leaderboard for the very first time in MCBC history Overall, we are extremely proud that MCBC came second

In April, two MCBC members were selected to represent the University in the Boat Race against Cambridge Ruby Mullin raced in the Women’s Lightweight Boat, and Lenny Jenkins (MSc Sustainability, Enterprise & the Environment, 2023) raced in the Men’s Blue Boat We are extremely proud of them and wish MCBC’s trialists for next year the best of luck!
As Trinity term dawned, Summer VIIIs was eagerly anticipated. Rowers enjoyed the return to the water, and quickly made up for lost time in water sessions. Coxes and rowers saw huge improvements in technique and reaped the benefits of months of land training.
Summer VIIIs week was a resounding success. The O1 stayed level for the week, completing four strong row-overs. The O2 showed great spirit, and despite getting bumped on the first three days, returned on Saturday to bump for the first time in 20 starts! The W1 had a fantastic week, bumping up twice to end up higher than where they started, and the W2 experienced it all, with bumps up, bumps down, and row-overs to complete the set! It ended with a Summer VIIIs Dinner, where we welcomed many old faces for the celebrations
Music at Mansfield
James Brown, Director of Music
Music
at Mansfield continued its tradition of both embellishing Chapel services, and entertaining audiences in College concerts and other events
The Chapel Choir, which is open to all, continues to provide two choral items at Wednesday services, as well as singing the College Grace at dinner afterwards. It is also performed at the Annual Carol Service (below, right), and at Mansfieldmas, which was once again an opportunity to showcase College performers in both solo and ensemble items, with poetry and readings from members of the community The choir also contributed to a joint choral evensong in November in New College Chapel, together with the choirs of Wadham and Corpus Christi Colleges
An innovation this year has been a Newcomers concert in Michaelmas term plus a Leavers’ Concert in Trinity term to bookend the academic year. Another new initiative was an SCR concert also held in Trinity to distract exam-frazzled students.
There was also a non-themed concert in the middle of the year which was open to all. All three of the new concerts will, I hope, be held annually
The student-run music society has been ably chaired this year by Lauren Aitken

(Maths, 2021), and more latterly by Hannah Fagan (DPhil English, 2022). The society coordinates concerts and other events, including social ones.
As a new Director of Music this year, it has been a privilege to step into the tradition laid down by others, and to try to build on that I look forward to the future musical endeavours in the year to come
Finally, as I write, news came in of the appointment of Honorary Fellow of Mansfield, Errollyn Wallen CBE, as Master of the King’s Music. This extremely prestigious appointment reflects very well on the College, as well as on its holder.

The Annual Carol Service in the Chapel

Drama at Mansfield

Marianne Nossair (History, 2022), President of Mansfield Players
The College drama society, Mansfield Players, put on the New Writing Festival in Trinity term, in collaboration with Oxford University’s drama society. It was a very successful event and a lovely showcase of both Mansfield’s talent and the wider drama community.
The event was held in the Legacy Garden and had a great turnout, with some fantastic performances and pieces of writing. Alongside this, Mansfield Players has provided funding to Bucket List at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which had a very successful, almost sold-out run of two weeks.
Although Mansfield Players was unable to encourage a Cuppers team to enter the Universitywide drama Cuppers competition, we have seen an increased interest in drama at Mansfield which is certainly Mansfield Players’ overall goal
Sar
We We
Supporting

students

Welfare support has been a long-standing feature at Mansfield. However, this academic year marked a significant milestone as it was the first time a professional, non-academic individual assumed the lead welfare role. While the overall structure remained consistent, there was a greater emphasis on one-to-one meetings and consultation with the College, University, and external resources to gather and share best practices.

Rachel O’Nunain, Academic Support Tutor
There were multiple opportunities for the students to come together to foster both productivity and academic community this year. The Postgraduate Writing Bootcamp, where members of the MCR enjoy a breakfast together before settling down to write for the morning, proved highly popular.
We streamlined communication within the welfare team, ensuring both confidentiality and transparency We also introduced an online booking mechanism to lower barriers for students seeking to meet with me, making support more accessible
Data collected at the end of the previous term highlighted key areas of concern, including academic pressures, challenges related to neurodiversity, harassment, and relationship issues. Addressing these issues focused on fostering a sense of belonging, reducing isolation, and equipping students with practical coping strategies. This holistic approach played a crucial role in creating a support system designed to help students thrive both academically and personally
There have also been a variety of breakfast clubs for STEM students to meet with their subject mentor before heading out to the day’s lectures and labs By popular demand, the Shut-Up and Focus group study sessions also returned and attendance grew steadily
There was also a full programme of academic support workshops running throughout the academic year. In Michaelmas, the new undergraduates received several academic induction lectures in Freshers’ Week and there were several academic support workshops for the whole College community across the year, with topics ranging from revision strategies to time management and working efficiently.
Finally, students have also been able to seek support via one-to-one sessions with me or the Postgraduate Subject Mentors
MCAA report
Daniel Tarry (Geography, 2011), MCAA President
Mansfield College Alumni Association (MCCA) exists to represent alumni views and liaise with the Development team to ensure the College provides a programme of events that caters for the ever growing and increasingly diverse alumni population.
Highlights include the annual London drinks event, which was held at the Oxford and Cambridge Club this year; the launch of the For Mansfield. Forever. campaign at the London Stock Exchange Group in March; and the Summer Celebration, held at College in June Next year we particularly welcome the increased frequency of Gaudy celebrations and look forward to contributing to the emerging estate transformation plans
At the end of the academic year, Lucinda Rumsey (then Senior Tutor) joined the Leavers’ Celebration event at Mansfield to present the 2024 John Muddiman JCR Student of the Year Award to Eric Balonwu (PPE, 2022) (pictured below).
This year we paid tribute to Bob Skelly (English, 1965), a long-standing member of the MCAA committee who sadly passed

away in August and was a supportive champion of the College, particularly on the work to widen access to the University. He will be deeply missed by the committee and the wider alumni community. We also thank Lucinda, who retired as Senior Tutor, for the work she has done for the committee over the years, acting variously as Treasurer and College representative. The new Senior Tutor, Helen Lacey, now joins us as the College representative
The MCAA Committee works with the College’s Development and Alumni Relations team to keep our 5,000 strong global alumni community connected, communicating, and contributing to College life. As the estate transformation plans for the College progress, we are working closely to ensure the alumni voice is heard and know the College has an exciting programme in the coming year.

e an increasingly younger and more ational group and are always keen to me new members to ensure we sent a good spread of subjects and culation years – either to join the mittee or simply to help reconnect i via specific events or munications Do contact us at ieldCollegeAlumniAssociation@outlo m to find out more
