Breaking Ground for Shadow Glen Elementary

Groundbreaking for the eighth elementary school in Manor ISD occurred on May 16th at 12000 ShadowGlen Trace, on the north side of the ShadowGlen community. Land for ShadowGlen Elementary was donated to Manor Independent School District by Cottonwood Holdings Ltd. via Pete Dwyer of Dwyer Realty. The land donation for the

school consisted of 11.6 acres valued at more than 1 million dollars. ShadowGlen Elementary School was designed by BLGY Architecture. It is expected to open in August 2015. Joeris General Contractors are serving as the project’s construction contractor. ShadowGlen Elementary will be 95,000 square foot,

Pursuit Through Manor Ends in Fatality

On June 28th a DPS trooper made a routine traffic stop on a female subject near the front of the Greenbury Subdivision. The subject was also under the suspicion of DUI. During the traffic stop the subject reentered the vehicle and fled the scene. The trooper gave chase, dispatch notified Manor Police Department, but before officers could join the pursuit the subject lost control of

the vehicle Heading westbound near the Mc Donalds entrance. The vehicle crossed the eastbound lanes before slamming into the retaining wall in the Valero Parking lot. The subject was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the subject is not currently being released.

High Speed Pursuit Ends in Arrest Linked to Local Burglaries

On June 18 Manor Police Department officers on patrol in the Wildhorse Creek Subdivision noticed a suspicious vehicle. When marked officers arrived a male and female subject fled the scene. After a high speed pursuit down Blake Manor road the car left the roadway and wrecked near Lockwood road. Both subjects were taken into custody. The Female subject was charged with possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance. The male subject was charged with evading arrest in a motor vehicle. Items recovered from the investigation were linked to other recent burglaries in the area.

Manor Police Officer Retires

Officer Judi Ellis was honored at the Manor City Council meeting Wednesday night for her fourteen years of volunteer service with the Manor Police Department. Officer Ellis worked as a regular police officer responding to calls, fires, and collisions. Chief Snyder remembers one call in particular that they responded to together. The call came in that there was a structure fire. Chief Snyder and Officer Ellis arrived before the fire department. The home was fully engulfed. The house had a little white picket fence around it. Officer Ellis ran up to the gate; seeing that it was closed, she chose to do a forced entry and kicked the gate with all her might. Office Ellis bounced backward like a boomerang, falling on her back. Chief Snyder, who noticed that the sides of the fence stopped at the corners of the property, simply walked around the fence. Over the last several years, Office Judi Ellis focused on Code Enforcement, which is often a difficult job as no home owner wants to get a ticket for an ordinance violation. Officer Ellis was able to accomplish this job without ever getting a complaint. The volunteer time Officer Ellis donated over the years has saved the City of Manor hundreds of thousands of dollars, and increased city revenue by thousands of dollars. However, the May 2014 tornado in McDade destroyed her home. Officer Judi Ellis has decided to focus her time on rebuilding her home and has retired from the police force, effective July 3rd. Chief Snyder presented Officer Ellis with a small token of the department’s appreciation. Officer Ellis’ commitment, generosity, and dedication will be missed by the Manor Police Department and the City of Manor. Thank you Officer Ellis!

the movie Secondhand Lions. Gordon graduated from Tarleton State with a degree in agriculture. He cultivates 2 acres of fruits and vegetables single handedly. Gordon grows grapes, melons, and peaches; many root vegetables; peppers, okra, and several varieties of heirloom tomatoes. Laverne’s Vegetable Patch is at her home off of Blue Goose. Laverne and her husband Norman, who is retired from Manor ISD, work the land on their ½ acre vegetable patch, greenhouse, and chicken coop, growing delicious cucumbers, squash, and tomatoes, and harvesting fresh eggs. Mata Tamales are made by three generations of the Mata Family here in Manor. Made by hand with pork, beef, chicken, or vegetables, Mata tamales are enjoyed by the whole town. Benita is famous for her tamales, often preparing hundreds for a local wedding or holiday celebration. We plan on introducing you to a few producers from the Manor Farmers’ Market every week. two story building with a capacity to serve 700 students. Classrooms will be grouped in “neighborhoods” of grade levels surrounding a central learning commons area for each neighborhood. Classrooms will be paired with shared student restrooms. This unusual concept by BLGY Architects is based on the Project Based Learning (PBL) employed at Manor New Tech High School. PBL integrates technology in the classroom with development of projects by groups of students working together. Projects are constructed around state standards. According to the Buck Institute for Education,

Project Based Learning is “21st century competencies - Students build competencies valuable for today’s world, such as critical thinking/problem solving, collaboration, and communication, and creativity/innovation, which are taught and assessed.” Although ShadowGlen Elementary School will not be LEEDS certified, due to financial constraints, it will incorporate many LEEDS energy efficient concepts. Large window shades will be angled to keep out summer heat, yet in the winter will allow maximum heat and light into the classrooms. Light will be reflected up onto

the ceiling, allowing for natural lighting, without the heat from intense sunlight all year long. Solar panels were left out because of the added expense. However, rainwater harvesting will still be utilized. This is the district’s eighth elementary campus, and the final project to be funded with 2007 bonds. On May 10, 2014, voters in Manor ISD approved a $124.9 million bond that includes a ninth elementary school and design plans for a tenth elementary campus. The ninth elementary school is expected to be just south of WildHorse Creek.

Kaylie’s Korner On Monday Chris and I were cooking dinner and he mentioned that I hadn’t made his favorite dessert, sopapilla cheesecake, in a long time. So, of course, I will make it for him. (Eventually) But, in the mean time I thought I would share the recipe with all of you. I have used my recipe, but copied pictures from a website because my sopapilla cheesecakes never come out this beautiful. 2 (8oz) pkgs cream cheese, softened 2 cups white sugar separated 2 tsp pure vanilla extract 2 (8oz) cans refrigerated crescent rolls For the topping: 1/2 cup white sugar 1 tsp cinnamon 1/2 cup butter, melted 1/4 cup honey, for garnish PREHEAT an oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray. Beat the cream cheese with 2 cups of sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth. Unroll one can of crescent roll dough, and place into the bottom of baking dish; pressing the seams together. Make sure that the edges are not too thick. Unroll the second can of crescent roll dough and using a rolling pin shape into one piece to fit over the cream cheese mixture in the 9x13 pan. Set aside. I like to take a piece of cling wrap, lightly spray it with cooking spray, and use that as my surface for smoothing the dough out. It makes it much easier to place on top of the cream cheese. Mix together the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract in a medium sized bowl until thoroughly mixed. Evenly spread the cream cheese mixture into the baking dish fully covering the bottom crescent rolls. Then cover with the remaining piece of crescent dough. Brush some of the melted butter over the crescent rolls. Stir together 1/2 cup of sugar, cinnamon, and butter and sprinkle mixture over the top of the cheesecake. Bake in the preheated oven until the crescent dough has puffed and turned golden brown, about 20-25 minutes, or you can use the crescent roll package as a guideline. Remove from the oven and drizzle with honey. Cool completely in the pan before cutting into 12 squares. Chill in the refrigerator for a good 4 hours before serving, or serve warm (Chris’s favorite) with a glass of milk.

Local Business Spotlight Voelker Construction

Stan Voelker, a native Manorite, sits in his office and recalls an old framed print of a cowboy in a rodeo, hanging on for dear life to a bucking bronco, with a quote underneath which read: “Champions do not become champions when they win an event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely a demonstration of their championship character.” (T. Alan Armstrong) Stan had begun his career in construction in 1969 by framing houses. After graduating high school, Stan went to work for the National Guard, where he met Ralph Reinhardt, a man with similar interests and ambitions as large as his own. Stan and Ralph started Voelker Welding and Construction in 1978. Stan and Ralph wondered about choosing to leave their good paying jobs one sweltering day in Giddings. They were out in the middle of a field with a handheld posthole digger, trying to create a solid foundation for a building they were constructing. About three inches down they hit solid rock, hard enough to make your head split. Stan looked up at Ralph and said, “What in the world have we gotten ourselves into?” With the determination of the rodeo cowboy in that framed print, Stan and Ralph pressed on, knowing where they’d come from and exactly where they were headed – if they could just hold on tight. And hold on tight they did. Stan Voelker decided to return to school and went to Concordia University in Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration, graduating Magna Cum Laude at the age of 49. Mr. Voelker says, “Other than the birth of my children, finishing my degree at Concordia was the neatest thing I’ve ever been part of.” Since then, Mr. Voelker has pursued and received certification from The National Association of Home Builders as a Certified Graduate Builder, Graduate Master Builder, Certified Aging in Place Specialist and Certified Green Builder. Stan and Sandra, his wife of 42 years, have lived on acreage north of Manor

for more than 30 years. They have three grown children: Scott is a graduate of Texas A&M University and project engineer for Flintco Construction of Austin; Stacy, graduate of North Texas State University, is an assistant buyer for JCPenny at their corporate offices in Plano; and Steven graduated from Texas A&M University and is currently working at Voelker Welding and Construction, and the Voelkers’ newer enterprise, Voelker Custom Homes. Stan Voelker’s understanding of the true grit of the rodeo cowboy may have been what propelled him to spend 30 years involved with the Austin-Travis County Livestock Show and Rodeo, now known as The Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo. Mr. Voelker became President of the rodeo in 1999. Stan Voelker also served on the Manor Independent School District Board of Trustees for eighteen years. He served on the Board of Directors for the Manor Chamber of Commerce, and as Director of the Manville Water Supply Corporation, and the Home Builders Association of Greater Austin. Currently Mr. Voelker is a Director of Frontier Bank, and a Trustee, Treasurer and Deacon for the Eternal Faith Baptist Church here in Manor. Voelker Custom Homes has been a successful business in Manor for over 30 years. Stan and Ralph continue to work side-by-side in their offices and design center, located at 14401 FM 973, they can be reached at (512) 272-5458. It all started with a seed...

By Kelsey Feuerbacher Manor Community News Staff Last Saturday, July 12, 2014, marked the 66th Anniversary of the Watermelon Festival in McDade, Texas. Every year, in the second weekend of July, people from all over Bastrop County flock to McDade to enjoy their delicious watermelon and hometown charm. According to

the City of McDade website, the story of how it all began is as colorful as the festival itself. In 1948, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of McDade, Texas noticed an ad in the FarmersStockman Magazine for a contest called “Neighboring Progress.” The contest was offering $1,000 to the

best organization. The PTA recognized an opportunity to rebuild the local school lost in a devastating fire. The townspeople, embracing the idea of improving their beloved city, rallied together and the McDade Annual Watermelon Festival was born. Although, the City of McDade did not win the contest, the positive changes in the town and the

What Can Investors Learn from the All Stars?

Baseball’s best players gathered in Minneapolis this week to participate in the All-Star Game. If you’re a fan or even a “weekend athlete,” you can admire these players for their abilities, even if you — like the vast majority of humanity — can’t hope to duplicate them. But if you’re an investor, you may be able to learn some practical lessons from the All Stars. So let’s look at a few common All Star traits to see how they might apply to investors: • Consistency — All Stars typically don’t just have a few good weeks or months — they tend to be consistently excellent, year after year. As an investor, you, too, need to strive for consistency. Instead of periodically chasing after “hot” stocks, try to follow a long-term strategy by staying invested in the financial markets, through both “up” and “down” periods, and by rebalancing your holdings, as needed, to reflect changes in your life. • Ability to avoid errors — Everyone makes mistakes, but All Stars seem to make fewer of them. Whether it’s fielding balls cleanly, successfully executing a sacrifice bunt or not

walking a player with the bases loaded, All Stars seem to avoid errors while making the right moves at the right time. When you invest, you need to avoid common “errors,” such as investing either too conservatively or too aggressively. Instead of going to either of these extremes, build a portfolio appropriate for your risk tolerance but still capable of helping you reach your goals. • Preparedness — All Stars keep themselves in great shape and often develop additional skills as the years go by, such as developing a new pitch or learning to hit the ball to different parts of the field. By preparing themselves in this way, they can take advantage of opportunities as they arise. As you invest, you will also need to be prepared to take advantage of new opportunities. One such way to prepare is to have enough liquidity in your portfolio to make appropriate investment moves. In addition to preparing for opportunities, you’ll need to prepare for challenges that could jeopardize your investment strategy. So, for example, you may want to build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses. With such a fund in place,

you may not have to dip into your long-term investments to pay for short term needs, such as a major car repair, a new furnace or a big bill from the dentist. • Awareness of limits — Not even the best All Stars can do everything well. A good “singles hitter,” for instance, won’t waste a lot of effort in trying to hit home runs, while a powerful, but slow, slugger might not attempt to steal a base. Investors have limits, too, based On their sophistication and their financial resources. To illustrate: Some wealthy and highly experienced investors may embark on complex or risky strategies, or purchase hard-to-understand investments. But these risky techniques and complex investments are not for everyone — and smart, “everyday” investors know this and stick with proven strategies and comprehensible investments. You may never step foot on a baseball diamond. But as an investor, you can still pick up some “gems” of wisdom from the All Stars. With nearly 2,000 people in attendance this year, the Watermelon Festival has become a highlight of the summer activities for McDade and surrounding cities. Some of the activities included a car show, Arts and Crafts, a horseshoe contest, Watermelon Queen Coronation and my personal favorite – the watermelon seed spitting contest. Of course, the most anticipated contest is the judging of the biggest watermelon. This year the Grand Champion Watermelon went to Bonnie and David Sherrill. Their watermelon weighed in at an astounding 115lbs! The celebration concluded with an all-you-can-eat watermelon feast. All proceeds from the festival go back into the community to help fund scholarships, local food banks and schools. Vendors around the area sponsored the events along with countless volunteers who helped make the Watermelon Festival possible. Gina Griffith, President of Mcdade Watermelon Festival, says “I want to thank everyone who came out and supported us. It was a great turnout this year.” Not only is the festival a tradition in itself, but the original idea of coming together and giving back to the community is still alive and well in this small town of McDade, Texas.

Marcus is a 17 year old high school student who is in critical condition after a house explosion on Sunday morning. They will be hosting a trail ride starting at 10:30AM at the VFW. Hope for the Hopeless

Pastor Gene Smith: Eternal Faith Baptist Church

As our world changes daily, socially, politically, economically and naturally, Christians may begin to feel powerless The counters of the drug stores are filled with medicines for anxiety and depression. Many medical doctors say that if they could discover a cure for depression they would make billions of dollars. Dr. Ronald Dworkin, a Maryland anesthesiologist, in his book “Artificial Unhappiness: The Dark Side of the New Happy Class” says, “Doctors are now medicating unhappiness, …Too many people take drugs when they really need to be making changes in their lives.” According to a government study, antidepressants have become the most commonly prescribed drugs in the United States. They’re prescribed more than drugs to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, or headaches. Much of today’s depression is caused by the presence of guilt. In the Bible, Cain was depressed due to the guilt of murdering his brother Able. In Genesis 4:6-7 God asked Cain, ‘Why is your face downcast?” In Psalm 32:3-4 David was depressed until he confessed his adulterous affair with Bathsheba. When we are depressed because of the guilt of sin – we must turn to the Lord Jesus Christ. In Psalms 42:5 we read David’s comments to himself “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God…” Repentance of and confession of our sin to the Lord Jesus brings peace that dispels all our depression. In the toughest of times, we can call on the Lord. After graduating from seminary and beginning a ministry in Houston, my father died in June, and two months and two days later my mother died. It was the most difficult time in my life – but the Lord strengthened me daily. We can go through the most difficult times of life in the strength of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 4:16 says “Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” In times of deep trouble, focus on Jesus. Quote His word. Meditate on His word. Even if you don’t feel like it, force yourself. Deliberately think on the Word and the Lord. Call on Him in prayer and He will answer. The Lord Jesus is able to do far more than we can imagine or ask. Ephesians 3:20 “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” He is able – trust Jesus.

Manor ISD Board Approved the Hiring of 4 Administrators Contributed Story The Manor ISD Board of Trustees recently approved the hiring of administrators in the following roles: executive director of curriculum and instruction, director of bilingual/ELS programs, director of career and technical education, and director of human resource operations. Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction Deborah Rang has been named Manor ISD’s executive director of curriculum & instruction. Rang currently serves as the administrative supervisor of leadership development in Austin ISD where she collaborates with district and campus leadership to plan and facilitate professional development for assistant principals and new administrators. Prior to her current role, Rang served as administrative supervisor for Austin ISD’s curriculum department. In this role she implemented, organized, and led 300 PreK-12th grade teachers and curriculum leaders in a Curriculum Writers Cadre incorporating differentiation and Whole Child initiatives. She also developed and implemented a number of processes and protocols supporting eighteen curriculum departments in areas including curriculum development, implementation, alignment, and data analysis. Rang has also served as a science specialist, a curriculum specialist, an education specialist, a teacher and an instructional assistant. She holds a bachelor’s of science in interdisciplinary studies from Southwest Texas State University and a master’s in educational administration with additional graduate level coursework in education technology, science education and superintendent program from Texas State University. She is currently working on earning her doctorate in school improvement, also from Texas State University. Director of Bilingual/ESL Programs Manor ISD Board of Trustees named Elizet Rodriguez as the district’s director of bilingual/ ESL programs. Rodriguez currently serves as the coordinator of multilingual curriculum and instruction in Pflugerville ISD where she collaborates with various district staff to develop and implement district curriculum and to provide dual language program services. She also facilitates professional development and trainings to dual language teachers, instructional coaches, and campus principals. Rodriguez also has experience as an English language learner assessment specialist, a bilingual lead teacher, a bilingual interventionist and a bilingual teacher in grades PreK-4. Rodriguez attended Texas State University and earned a bachelor’s of arts in Spanish, a minor in Mass Communications and a Latin American Business Certificate. She also holds a master’s degree in elementary education-bilingual/bicultural from Texas State University and is currently working on her doctorate in educational leadership at Lamar University. On average our officers responded to 28 calls each day in June 2014. Archie Elmore has been named Manor ISD director of career and technical education. Elmore brings with him ten years of experience as the former assistant director of career and technical education in Round Rock ISD. In this role, Elmore was responsible for the CTE budget development and management of state and local funds, providing leadership and supervision of CTE district program, providing professional development to district CTE teachers, and much more. Additionally, Elmore brings with him ten years of experience as a middle school principal, more than ten years as a career and technical education teacher, and several years of experience with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. Elmore earned a bachelor’s of science in general agriculture and a master’s of science teaching in agricultural education from Tarleton State University. Director of Human Resource Operations Manor ISD Board of Trustees named Marivel Sedillo as the district’s director of human resource operations. Sedillo brings with her fourteen years of educational leadership experience in areas at the campus and district level, including elementary campus principal and director of human resources, both in Hays CISD and Round Rock ISD. As director of human resources, Sedillo focused on recruiting, evaluating and hiring paraprofessionals, auxiliary, and professional employees. She also led the district’s substitute orientations, led a catastrophic leave bank, and co-led the district’s induction and mentoåring program. Sedillo holds bachelor’s degrees in medical records administration and healthcare administration and a master’s degree in special education with a minor in psychology all from Texas State University.

Manor Lions Club Introduces New Officers

On Monday night Manor Lions was filled with Lions from as far away as Dallas, guests and family members to greet the new officers for 2014/2015 year. Dinner was catered by Good Luck Grill serving delicious enchiladas, rice and beans, homemade guacamole and salsa with chips and queso dip. There was a lot of laughing and a lot of joking at Lions Hall Monday Night. A good time was had by all. Manor Lions Club meetings are at 7PM the second and fourth Monday of each month except December. All are welcome to attend and join the Manor Lions Club
