Reappropriation of an industrial harbour wasteland in Rotterdam Transformation and extension of a former harbour warehouse into a school of wood crafts and collaborative spaces

The project site is located on the Katendrecht peninsula, a district of the city of Rotterdam. Governed in the twentieth century by the harbour activity, this district is now changing. The building selected for this project is the former Brazilian coffee warehouse, called Santos, and its adjacent plot of land. It was built between 1901 and 1903 by the architects JP Stok Wzn and JJ Kanters for the Rotterdam Blauwhoedenveem company. Today, the building is one of the last vestiges of the industrial-port era of the district and was classified as a Dutch National Heritage Monument in 2003.

The harbour industry on the Katendrecht peninsula was developed at the beginning of the twentieth century and grew quickly over the next decades. Its development has been one of the main factors in the growth of the port of Rotterdam which becomes a world class harbour.

In the 90’s, many industries tied to the port activity shut down and in the 2000’s the district began to change. This transformation is in line with the interventions made in the famous Kop van Zuid peninsula. Today, these changes are still in motion. Moreover, in may 2012, the municipality etablished an official document on the urban planning of the east area of the district, called Katendrecht-POLS. This district is divided in three areas.

In order to appreciate the unique architecture of the former harbour warehouse, the new extension is set back from the existing building, allowing it to express itself. The intervention is however affirmed in the urban landscape and follows the templates defined by the municipality.

This project proposes to integrate a hybrid and experimental program : a school of wood crafts associated with collaborative spaces such as FabLab. The aim is to reconsider these professions, which are these days devalued by reinterpreting the very functioning of a school which trains the professionnals of tomorrow, through its organization, the proposed training and its role in the city. The education provided aims not only to master traditional construction techniques, but also to appropriate new emerging techniques in the design and construction processes. The workshops and learning rooms of the school, formerly privatized, are shared from time to time. A new form of cooperative is then introduced. This way, the school becomes more a place of experimentation and research than a strictly disciplinary institution. It invites the exchange and sharing of knowledge and/or know-how between students, professionals and foreigners from various backgrounds ; preparing students for their future professional life outside the school.

2 The idea of interdisciplinary sharing between the two elements of the program is reflected in the project by a strong circulation way running through the entire existing building and its extension. First of all, this way serves not only to access the various programmatic parts but it is also conceived as a public ramp trying to be a part of the neighborhood level (1). The path then moves progressively inside the project, becoming the central circulation point between the elements of the program and serves as a link between the existing building and its extension (2). This circulation is reinforced at the periphery by a succession of vertical services (3). A varied architectural path is created allowing observation of the activities taking place though out the building.

The main foyer, consisting of a large open staircase and multiple walkways, is a generous space which unfolds several times over the school hall. This space, generously windowed, offers views on the inside and the outside of the building. Its special position at the center of the project allows it to easily connect the different parts of the architectural program, but also makes it a suture element between the existing building and its extension.

Collaborative workspaces would include various spaces, dedicated to each stage of the process of manufacturing objects or a prototypes. Thus, there are spaces for reflection and sharing of knowledge such as an open space and its library, places to design such as a computer room, but also workshops dedicated to the production and assembly of the imagined objects. They are equipped with numerically controlled machines (3D printer, laser cutting). These tools often reserved for professionals are now accessible to a larger audience.

02 TRANSFORMATION OF A FORMER BOARDING SCHOOL h e r i t a g e

FÉNÉTRANGE, France MASTER 2 ENSAS 2013-2014 Work in collaboration with Lucile KELLER and Morgane OSWALD

The project is about the transformation of the former boarding school «Notre-Dame de la Providence» of Fénétrange into a hotel and tourism school associated with an operating hotel-restaurant and a spa. The program is composed of two main facilities: the school and the hotel. The reasons behind this choice are many. First of all, it is a specific training that fits well with the location (heritage tourism and events). This new function also creates a new dynamic in the declining village, and thus encouraging its future revitalization. Finally it allows the reuse of the existing building.

The extension keeps low and simple in order to not disturb the architectural perception of the existing building wich posess a significant shape and style.

The school occupies almost the entire existing building Only the west wing is utilized by the hotel which extends into the new extension. The extension is also dedicated to the spa and the restaurant. Two distinctive entrances, one at the west (hotel part) and the other at the east (school), ensure the autonomy of the two facilities.

03 RECONSIDERATION OF HIGHWAY A3 u r b a n i s m

O S TWA L D / I L L K I R C H - G RAF F ENSTADEN/L A VIGIE, F ra n ce MASTER 1 ENSAS 2012-2013 Individual work

Topic of the project class : «A sustainable city facing its urban-rural environment». The project focuses here on the requalification of the A3 highway from Vendenheim (north) to La Vigie (south) and the revitalization of liberated spaces in order to contain urban sprawl which has become a major issue.

Water activities and walks are privileged in this pedestrian area. A small fresh-water pier is created and open restaurants are installed on the ground floor of the buildings located the main square. Around this new sector of activities a set of new homes are spread, as a link between old and recent.

The investment of the spaces in the south part of the studied sector has been reconsiderated according to an intervention plan split into three successive steps. The first describes increasing the connections between Ostwald and Illkirch which are currently limited. The second step aims to put in place a new traffic ring in Ostwald city and build a new educational center. While the goal of the third step is to create a new center in the surroundings of the «Lac Achard», where today it is far away from the two communes. This last point called «creation of a new center» is the subject of a special study.

ACKERDIJKSE PLASSEN Realization of an outdoor bench along an old farm located in a natural and protected area in the North of Rotterdam (NL). Construction after the end of my internship.

«LABYRINT, FASCINATIES IN BEELD»* Scenographic project for the exhibition «Labyrint, Fascinaties in Beld» proposed within the cultural space of Villa Zebra in Rotterdam (NL). This art exhibition, dedicated to the children, took place from décember 13th 2014 to may 17th 2015. Participation in the inauguration party.
