Preface

4

The studio was structured as an introduction to urban design representation and how it is used as a means of design thinking. The premise is that urban design is best understood and expressed through the study and representation of the built urban environment. Hence the studio will focus on the study and representation of the key urban elements in cities and will be structured in multiple modules running through the semester, each culminating with an exhibition of the outcome. These modules will significantly focus on effectively capturing and communicating the spatial qualities of the urban built environment.

Module 1 involves perceiving and representation of the key elements of urban design. The premise is that building types, urban blocks, streets and public open spaces form the key elements that come together to make any functional urban space. The exercises in this module will enable students with methods to study eachelement and how they contribute to the scale, form, character and their relationship with the larger urban context.

Module 2 final exercise which will involve the application of the abilities and skills developed in the first module through preparation of a framework plan for an urban intervention. This module focuses on preparing and representing site analysis, design strategies The culmination of this module will be to prepare a set of effective communication representation drawings for the design and the analysis.

As St. peters basilica is surrounded by low rise builings, maximun edge is given to hotels, cafe, restaurants. The entire street has well designated pedestrian space.Height of the buildings are not more than five storey.

Kapaleeswarar temple tank - Mylapore is one of the religious and public gathering space. The temple tank edge is partially porous allowing visually connectivity to the street. The temple is ancient one in the city which was built during 7th century CE. 22

Workshop : Urban Design Intervention near Vastrapur Lake area

A potential of bond Team project : Toulouse university and MUD studio CEPT university.

We were given site is in vastrapur and asked to find a problem in public domain that needed to be resolved in the lens of urban designer. we selected a sun rise park street f serves as a major through fare which connects Drive in road and Vastrpur lake area.

Major concern in developing the street is being dominated by vehicluar traffic.

Location : Vastrapur, Ahmedabad 30

Major concerns are 1. Sidewalks are encroached by vehicles and tress.

The redevelopment of the street was proposed to address the generic issues of any streets found in Indian context. A pedestrian bridge was proposed to connect the metro station and the proposed street. Street components like pedestian path and space for optional activites are added by utilising space from central median.

Social Median

Streets for All Individual project: Design of public space, Vastrapur Selected public space for the proposal is same street that selected for workshop.

Hence existing site condition i not repeated.

Aim is to develop the street into a neigbourhood identity, while focusing on making it accessible to every user of the street.

The master plan identifies “key linkage” between existing site condition to be strengthed through additional infrastructure and increased safety and comfort.

Currently out of 3 lanes only 2 lanes are effectively used. Hence space from lane is utilised for continuous pedestrian connections across the street. Narrowing down the lanes reduced the vehicular speed in the residential neighbourhood.

Dedicated bicycle track is added to connect with existing infrastructure and large margin of green along side the track act as a safety buffer.

Various necessary activities and optional activities are added in considering the surrounding building use and existing edge condition.

Proposed Street design

Crosswalks are added in stratergic location on an average of 100m once which facilitates people to use the median space and safety for ones who passes one edge to another.

Table top crossing is created in junction which also reduces the speed of vehicle and ensures safety for pedestrians.

Activities like linear park, kids play area, street vending, plaza, informal seating are added to draw surrounding to use the median space.

Junction have been redesigned to minimize the traffic cocflicting movements and ensure smooth movement for pedestrians and bicyclist.sidewalks and dedicated bicycle track have been provided with adequate width and crossing is raised to level of +150mm which makes the road crossings easier and also it act as a traffic calming measure.

A linear park is designed equipped with kids play area, seating spaces responding to the residential area alongside and also with continuous bicycle track along the edges.

Median space which was not facilitating any activities and partly used as an parking space which has been transformed by adding supporting activities to activate the 10m wide space. Major components being bicycle track and a linear park for the residential neighbourhood.

The studio served as an introduction to urbanism and the position of the urban designer in context of the built environment and its tangible and intangible aspects. The structure of the studio from exploring the various components of the public realm, to interactive student exchange program, finally terminating into an individual led design proposal was helpful in many ways.

Initiating from the case studies and documentation, their role was

imperative in facilitating the understanding of nuances that the public realm and its various components carry and the apparent impact in shaping the behavior of its users and the character of the space.

It helped in defining a comprehensive perspective, across different contexts and establish rationale behind the similarity or the dissimilarity associated with these case studies.

French workshop was the highlight of the semester that provided a further insightful experience through direct and indirect cross learnings, while dealing with a common project, along with the students from altogether different geographical and social context. Meanwhile, subsequent input lectures hosted by the in-department and external faculties helped furthermore to form a knowledge base before initiating individual design proposal.

The detailed learnings and skillsets acquired from the aforementioned exercises helped in formulating a proposal in the tune with the understanding of the urban elements, their relevance, and the impacts that the intricacies of the design would bear on its spatial environment and end-users. One of the skillsets, that was specifically chiseled, that I would stress upon will be the focus on narration of the proposal, and its importance to make the design legible to the laymen.
