NY State ID Problem

The current New York State ID was in question. The project was simple, re-design the ID improving its initial visibility, readability of information, and organization of proper information through out the 3� x 4� card. Making sure to include all the necessary information, and try to expand on an additional idea to help further the design.

Solution

Simplifying the typography, and using a two fairly readable typefaces that closely relate to the subject matter. While organizing the information on a modular grid-based system, the picture came into question and was therefore modified too accompany a clearer more accurate portrait of the citizen holder. The result was a clean, readable ID, that could potential by applied to other federal and state identification cards.

DE SCR IPTIO N

Using Gotham as the main typeface for the majority of the information on the card was due too the face’s versatility in weight and overall character. The card is also accompanied by Frere-Jones classic, Interstate for numerical information and too focus more on what the ID will be used for, travel along the US turnpikes. The seals and holographic mark on the lower-half of the card is paying homage too most European Id’s, being as this large use of a seal gives visual stimulant and a slight prestige pertaining to the New York State.

DES CR IPTIO N

The back of the card was kept very simple, too purposefully keep a delicate balance between the large graphical elements that are mandatory to the back. The New York State bird rests perched on a tree branch and below is the holographic NY state seal, adding a nice endpoint to the visual cue, which is the blue bar spanning down the middle of the card. This simple execution of keeping all the visual elements in a bar down the middle of the card, keeps the viewer lightly entertained but not disoriented by unnecessary imagery.

LOOT NYC Problem

The pitch was to invent a short two part poster series, of a day being advertised around New York City. The topic of the day was completely up to us, and/or the only established rule was too take complete control of a typographic grid, and explore different variations where in we will create two final posters used to advertise the day around the city.

Solution

LOOT NYC, is a day created for New York City residents, too re-gain financial control of there neighborhoods, by re-visiting the local mom-n-pop shops in the area. The intent of posters is too be visually distracting, but easily approachable/readable, so as to communicate the intention for he day, its schedule, and contact information, clearly.

The poster is setup with six major columns, giving it much space too collage and/or place image and text together. Keeping it connected typographically was important, but a slight lapse in orientation through imagery and scale makes the poster striking and informative.

DES CR IPTIO N

This second execution, is intended for a more subtle delivery. Still enabling the viewer to play around with the scattered text, the information however relates the in order, too the day start too finish, as too not disorient too much. The end result is a seemingly recognizable thumbnail from afar, and detailed event poster up-close.

Hemingway Problem

Ernest Hemingway is a highly respected and legendary author, for his boldy written war novels, and beautifully equated love stories. He is however quite a serious author, and thus needs too be expressed boldy and accurately. Create three book covers for the famed author.

Solution

The strongest part of Hemingway’s writing is his voice. His ability to connect his own spirit through his writing, and make you really hear him. He is probably one of the boldest, more aggressive writers of the 20th century. In examining this, a more traditional approach utilizing materials more related to the subject matter of Hemingway’s three novels seemed appropriate. Creating a visual direction for Hemingway’s strong, poetic, voice was a challenge solved through getting away from the computer and using painterly materials to design.

Description

A Farewell to Arms, is a book torn apart by love and war. Taking small symbolic references from the text helped formulate a simple cover, where “Love defeats War.�

A much bolder approach to the second book Death in the Afternoon. Utilizing actual paint strokes a manipulation of a bull and a stroke, helps connect the context of the book “the art of bull fighting.�

The last book, For Whom the Bell Tolls, leaves a simple but raw execution of scanning in charcoal drawings of the word WAR over and over again. Embodying the agony and manic state of mind developed in the book.

Blues Revolution Problem

Create a book based on the 60’s rock n’ roll and blues revolution. Explore the history, culture, art, and photography of the era, and create a palate for the book, utilizing a strong typographic grid of your choice.

Solution

A well connected book, typographically, pertaining to the early years right before the British invasion of 1964, and after. Examining the cities where the rock n’ roll sound became most influential, and the cities in which rock n’ roll originated from blues music. The performers involved with these movements, are mostly taken from serious photographers of the day. The book offers a glimpse into the era, of blues and rock n’ roll, through a contemporary design.

Being as far from rock n’ roll as a scene could get in the 1960’s, the booming London blues music scene gave the US pop charts a great surprise in through out the 1960’s. Changing music history forever the British Invasion, re-defined the scope of music in the 21st century world.

These few spreads highlight the order of which the book was put together, where is image and text complement each other equally, but occasionally there is a slight break in content, accompanied by smaller images/quotations.

Detroit Electronic Music Problem

Create a book pertaining too your own chosen subject matter. This subject can be anything, but in doing so consider the visual elements that will be displayed typographically and the images that will go along with the content. What is the overall feeling established from your chosen topic, and how can it be related without the use of a typographic grid.

Solution

Putting together a book not depending on a typographic grid, was harder than it seemed. In considering the content directed to the topic, (the development of Detroit Electronic Music), the book became much more playful, and was highly inspired by the works of Neville Brody, Rick Valecente, and Emigree Magazine. Pertaining to the time period of 1983 to 1997, the book became a personal re-interpretation of the era in electronic music, due too the lack off visual direction the music had when first coming up.

The two spreads establish the ‘lack off’ a grid structure, that is followed through-out the rest of the book. The spreads are also reminiscent of the late 1980’s design aesthetics, much related to the times of which Detroit electronic music, and/or hip hop was in its prime.

This section pertains too the creator of the genre Techno, and one of Detroit’s most pioneering producers and DJ’s. The section offers an extensive view into the history of the artist, as-well as a cover his most famous single, from 1989.

Happy End Problem

Create packaging for a bands whole career’s worth of records. Utilize the history, lyrical qualities, and overall experience derived from the bands and there music. Form a way to encapsulate all the albums, as well as design the albums if necessary.

Solution

Given the Japanese folk/rock band Happy End, there were a few things to consider before creating a package directly relating to the essence of the band. Happy End sounds just like any other American classic rock band, but notably they sing in Japanese, therefore communicating there image as something of American cultural decent, seemed like a correct approached. The band three main albums, are in-cased in a large band poster, which furthers the cult qualities that some American bands are known to have; the Greatful Dead, for example.

The records are encased within the folds of the poster, creating a safe, holdable, record sleeve, able too hold the records with ease, and presented in a clean manner.

Easy access for the lucky record digger. This also provides a moment of delight for the digger, as the discovery of something within the packaging itself, provides further mystery to unfolding the square of 36� paper.

Description

Upon opening the packaging in it’s entirety, the band poster is reviled. Already slightly faded due too the nature of which it was produced, the textural quality provides historical as well as musical reference to the time period of which the band was active in 1970-1974.

123Creative Problem

Find three spam e-mails, choose one of the three, and create a concept for re-designing there brand. The only constraint, is that the original company name has to be used in the final product. The solution should be far removed from the original company, and the function or purpose of the company. Exploring different formats of branding and advertising is helpful.

Solution

123Creative is a company dedicated, to the exploration of one’s own creativity, through a series of steps and exercises. The process is completely dependent on the users participation, thus it is required that the participant understands 123Creative is made to help there creativity grow, not too make them a highly talented artist overnight. The end result of the process culminates in the creation of three original illustrated pieces, all of which focus on a more traditional approach to exploring creativity.
