Gil Scott-Heron Album Cover Re-Design
Gil Scott-Heron had a profound role in civil rights history, but was also a true musician and incredible poet. The cover design for Gil Scott’s first published album Small Talk, was inspired by a novel written by Gil titled The Vulture. With strong similarities to Edgar Allen Po’s The Raven, Gil ScottHeron embodies the fear of impending doom a member of an urban community experiences.

There is an un-natural order with the setting, and/or place that the characters are left to deal with. The film contains series of abuse from authoritative figures and many encounters with different types of oppression. The image placed right, was taken from a book examining the French penal system. It is set to resemble a powerful metaphor for authoritative control. On one hand the tree represents society trying to deal with the entrapment of a system trying to tie it down and obey an un-natural order. On the other hand the tree represents the system getting out of control and beginning to un-ravel as society is trying to maintain.
