one mann’s opinion

I have been writing this letter for many years and for the first time, I’d like to dedicate this entire publisher’s note and issue from my heart to Chagit Leviev-Sofiev and Greg Sofiev whom I have been friends with for over 15 years. Their story is so powerful and amazing, and I am sure after reading it everyone will understand the admiration I have for them. My wife and I are proud to call them great friends.

The name Leviev is unmatched and goes beyond just diamonds. I am going to do my best to sum up what that means, although when you read the article, I am sure you will be just as elated as I am.

Chagit and Greg have carried on the commitment to philanthropy just as her father, Lev has done. The family’s wanting to give back is shown through The Leviev Foundation, a multigenerational commitment to philanthropy. They work alongside one another, as well as having their own separate avenues, in hopes to inspire others to contribute. They do it all from supporting education causes, to women in business, being a medical volunteer or supporting families in Israel after October 7. Chagit and Greg also involve their five children in their commitment to share their values, encouraging them to continue the philanthropic initiatives their family takes.

Calling Chagit and Greg a power couple is an understatement with their business work, philanthropic mission and family values. Although they do so much, you would never know based on how they carry themselves.

My editor, Alex and I have decided that recognizing couples, such as Chagit and Greg, shines light on the extraordinary success they have accomplished in their career and giving back. Our cover holds the highest standards, and we are honored to showcase them. Plenty of people have a successful business, but no one has come close or has matched what Chagit and Greg have done.

In my entire career, I have never met a couple that has exceeded their business success and their level of philanthropic initiatives. This is the most important letter I have ever written, and I hope their story gives

you the courage and inspiration to give back and support others who need it most. We wish you all a happy and healthy new year, and we hope you enjoy this issue of Mann About Town.

“Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.”

Opera Italiana is in the Air Holds Performance in New York City’s Central Park

“The Serenade at Sunset: Opera for Your Soul” Wows Thousands of first-time listeners and fans of Opera.

Opera Italiana is in the Air, a Cultural initiative led by renowned conductor, Founder and Music Director Alvise Casellati hosted an outdoor concert at the Naumberg Bandshell in New York City’s Central Park. This special event was offered free to the public with NBC News Entertainment Correspondent, Chloe Melas acting as the Master of Ceremonies and attracted a crowd of thousands to see this special performance.

In the spirit of the UN General Assembly “High Level Debate” underway in New York, the program for this special evening began with Giuseppe Verdi’s “Hymn of the Nations,” with the idea of melting national anthems of all countries to demonstrate that music unites everyone, and the Maestro united this piece with the US National Anthem. The enthusiasm for this performance caused a standing ovation over many parts of this program, notably during the famous piece “Nessun Dorma” by Puccini which ends with the words “I will win,” when all singers sang all together, after the performance of the piece from Isaac Thomas, the 13-year-old composer and the William Tell Overture.

During the performance, Maestro Casellati took the time to explain how important it is to see new compositions and hire living composers, work with the young musicians and pursue social responsibility projects such that of Opera Italiana working with the Music Therapy Departments of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital and NY

Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medicine. In these projects, the Maestro stated, “Music elevates Opera to its ultimate most important goal: its ‘healing’ power.”

Special guests’ stars included internationally acclaimed American soprano Latonia Moore, and two of the most sought-after young talents: Chinese Australian tenor Kang Wang and Georgean-Italian bass George Andguladze. Opera Italiana further collaborates again with Juilliard’s Pre-College program. This year, Maestro Casellati, in a blind competition, selected for the second time a composition by Isaac Thomas, a 12-year-old composer, whom the Maestro refers to as “the Mozart of our times.” His composition “Echoes of the Land” premiered during this special evening.

Opera Italiana is in the Air was created in 2017 in Central Park, New York, following a conversation between Daniele Bodini, Chairman of the FIAC Foundation and Alvise Casellati, Conductor and former Secretary of FIAC. Since then, its success has been exponential and it has expanded from Central Park, New York to the cities of Washington and Miami and to the home of Opera in Italy: Naples, Milan and Rome.

Opera Italiana is in the Air continues its collaboration with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital, Department of Music Therapy and for the first time includes collaboration with the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

The Gift of Holiday Glow

Let the holiday shopping begin! A PwC survey of 4,000 consumers shows that Americans plan to spend an average of $1,638 this season. Ranking high on shopping lists? Beauty bundles! Data from the New York Times suggests that a significant portion of consumer spending will be on prestige beauty products, with gift sets being a major driver. So, why are holiday kits so popular? For more on this trend, we turned to skin care guru Peter Thomas Roth. An influential segment leader in the beauty industry, Peter is known for creating clinically stronger formulas and leads all research and development efforts at his stateof-the-art lab and manufacturing facility.

In general, why do you think beauty kits are so popular this time of year?

I think the number one reason is the amazing value! It’s the only time of year when you can get prestige skin care favorites bundled together for less than the cost of buying them all separately. When putting together my holiday kits, I always make sure to offer my most popular products at incredible prices. I can’t wait for everyone to check them out. FYI, they make great gifts for other people, but it’s okay to treat yourself too!

Tell us about your holiday skin care kits this year.

This year, my holiday kits are out of this world! They all have a cool space theme and give you galactic results. There are so many to choose from, but I think people will really enjoy my Mask BlastOff 3-Piece Mask Kit. It includes 50 milliliter sizes of my Pumpkin Enzyme Mask, 24K Gold Mask and Water Drench® Mask for just $45. If you bought all of these masks

separately, it would come out to a total of $135! You can give away the entire kit or use individual products as stocking stuffers.

Many people travel over the holidays. Which kits do you recommend for travel?

My Mini Mask Multiverse 4-Piece Mask Kit includes four of my cult-favorite masks in 14 milliliter sizes for just $16. There’s a mask for every skin concern, and they’re the perfect size for your suitcase or carry-on. People love my masks but if you aren’t familiar with them, this kit is also an affordable way to try them! Another kit I love for traveling is my Eye Patch Galaxy 2-Piece Kit of Full Sizes. This kit is only $55 and gives you full-size jars of my Cucumber De-Tox® and Water Drench® Hydra-Gel Eye Patches for the price of one! The air on planes is especially drying for your skin and long fl ights can be tiring, but sit back and relax with these patches, and you’ll look fabulous and refreshed.

Any other holiday kits you recommend?

Anyone with dry winter skin needs to check out my Hydration & Beyond Super-Size Water Drench® Cream Kit. The value is unbelievable! For just $54—the same price as my full-size 50 milliliter Water Drench® Hyaluronic Cloud Cream Hydrating Moisturizer—you get twice as much moisturizer, plus three pairs of Water Drench® Hyaluronic Cloud Hydra-Gel Eye Patches. Get ready to celebrate and pop the bubbly because after using this kit, your skin will look silky soft, hydrated and youthful…brilliant!

A Legacy of Excellence Continues at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital

Mount Sinai Heart in New York City has been renamed the Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital, in honor of Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, who built Mount Sinai’s cardiovascular program into one of the world’s leading heart centers while advancing cardiovascular medicine around the globe. “This name is a tribute to all Dr. Fuster has accomplished over these last 30 years and ensures that his vision and commitment to excellence will continue to guide us into the future,” Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, MBA, Director of the Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital and the Dr. Valentin Fuster Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Dr. Fuster, a pioneer in the treatment and study of cardiovascular disease, remains President of the Fuster Heart Hospital and Physician-in-Chief of The Mount Sinai Hospital. And with an updated name, Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital remains an umbrella of cardiovascular medicine services, research, and education that spans the Mount Sinai Health System. Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital at The Mount Sinai Hospital is ranked No. 4 nationally for Cardiology, Heart and Vascular Surgery, according to U.S. News & World Report® for 2024-2025. As a research hospital, it is home to some of the world-leading investigators into the factors and mechanisms underlying every facet of cardiovascular disease, and to clinical researchers studying new and emerging treatments. “There’s no question that our teams are doing work that is setting the pace for the field,” Dr. Bhatt said. “We are driving innovation collaboratively, under one roof and all that we do is centered on the patient.”

Patients and their families travel the nation, and the world, for cardiovascular care at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital, due to its excellence in these areas and more:

Cardiovascular Surgery

In a recent recognition of its merit, the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at The Mount Sinai Hospital received the highest possible three-star recognition in all cardiac surgical categories in the 2020-2023 Society of Thoracic Surgeons Database. “It is very unusual for a program to earn a three-star rating across all surgical procedures evaluated nationally,” says David H. Adams, MD, Cardiac Surgeon-in-Chief, Mount Sinai Health System and the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Professor and Chair of Cardiovascular Surgery. In addition, the Department once again received the highest two-star safety rating from the New York State Department of Health and is the highest volume mitral valve program in the state. “Collectively these achievements are not only a testament to the incredible skills and capabilities of our surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, nurses and cardiologists, but they also reflect the incredible multidisciplinary expertise available to our patients from a broad range of

professionals across the Mount Sinai Health System,” notes Dr. Adams.

In another milestone, a team of Mount Sinai cardiovascular surgeons, led by Ismail El-Hamamsy, MD, PhD, Director of Aortic Surgery for the Mount Sinai Health System, performed 100 successful Ross procedures in 2023—the first program worldwide to achieve this milestone in a single year. The complex Ross procedure is the optimal treatment for replacing a diseased aortic valve in adolescents and adults, because it maximizes the use of their own tissue and restores long-term life expectancy, unlike mechanical or tissue valve replacements, says Dr. El-Hamamsy, the Randall B. Griepp Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at Icahn Mount Sinai. “This is all the more life-changing for women who are contemplating future pregnancies and for patients who lead active lifestyles,” he said.

Interventional Cardiology

Innovation, safety and high volume are hallmarks of The Mount Sinai Hospital’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, led by Samin K. Sharma, MD, Director of Interventional Cardiology for the Mount Sinai Health System, and Annapoorna S. Kini, MD, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. For 24 consecutive years, the lab or an interventionalist have received the highest two-star safety rating from the New York State Department of Health for PCI, also known as angioplasty—one of the most common procedures for patients with coronary artery disease. Dr. Kini was the only interventionalist in the state to receive the two-star safety rating in all PCI cases and non-emergency cases, while performing 2,844 procedures in the latest period reported, December 1, 2016, to November 30, 2019. The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory recently pioneered two innovative procedures, continuing its leadership in the field. The first, by Samin K. Sharma, MD, involved employing the world’s smallest heart pump system to provide temporary mechanical circulatory support during high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), while the second procedure treated a patient’s uncontrolled high blood pressure with the groundbreaking Symplicity Spyral renal denervation system.

“Despite taking on some of the most challenging referrals, our Cath Lab has consistently received the double-star rating,” said Dr. Kini, the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Professor of Medicine (Cardiology). “I believe that our efforts as educators and investigators—in our conferences, live cases, publications, educational applications and clinical trials—bring us to the forefront of the field.”

Electrophysiology

A journey that began nearly 10 years ago for Vivek Y. Reddy, MD, with his implantation of the country’s first single-chamber leadless cardiac pacemaker, reached fruition last year when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved of the first dual-chamber device for the treatment of bradycardia, an abnormally slow heartbeat. The AVEIR DR dual-chamber leadless pacemaker, made by Abbott, could revolutionize care for millions of people who require pacing of both upper and lower chambers of the heart. The leadless pacemaker—smaller than a AAA battery—is implanted entirely within the body. “This reduces exposure to potential lead and infection-related complications and offers a less restrictive and shorter recovery period following implantation,” says Dr. Reddy, Director of Cardiac Arrhythmia Services and the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust Professor of Medicine in Cardiac Electrophysiology.

Another game-changing approach has been advanced and pioneered by Dr. Reddy—pulsed field ablation (PFA). This method of treating atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm, offers enhanced precision and speed compared to traditional ablation methods, while significantly reducing risks such as esophageal damage, pulmonary vein injury and nerve damage. Dr. Reddy has studied the PFA system for more than 10 years, and was lead author of the ADVENT clinical trial, which paved the way for approval of the PFA system by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January 2024. The next month, Dr. Reddy and his team performed a groundbreaking procedure at The Mount Sinai Hospital, utilizing PFA technology.

A Leader’s Past and Future

Dr. Bhatt joined Mount Sinai as a leader in cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology, highly recognized for breakthroughs in areas including interventional cardiology, heart disease prevention, vascular medicine and heart failure.

Serving as Director of the renowned Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital provides the opportunity to realize a childhood dream. At age 11, the Boston, Massachusetts, native suffered a ruptured appendix and was rushed to the local children’s hospital. “The diagnosis was initially missed in the ER, and I became septic

and almost died,” he said. “Some people would have been turned off to medicine from that experience. But I loved being in the hospital with the doctors and nurses during the several weeks I was there, and that’s when my fervor for medicine took hold,” Dr. Bhatt said. Later, he decided cardiology would be his specialty, mainly because of the potential to save people’s lives. “I really felt that strongly when I was stenting closed arteries that were causing heart attacks in the middle of the night.”

After graduating as valedictorian from prestigious Boston Latin School, Dr. Bhatt obtained his science degree at MIT, his MD from Cornell, an MPH from Harvard and an Executive MBA from Oxford. He trained in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and in cardiology at Cleveland Clinic. Among his many achievements, Dr. Bhatt led a trial that demonstrated the benefit of a potent intravenous antithrombotic drug during stenting, which led to its FDA and European Medicines Agency approvals.

His work also resulted in the first FDA-approved drug, an omega-3 fatty acid prescription medication, to reduce cardiovascular risk among patients with elevated triglyceride levels already treated with statins—and his research has helped advance the understanding and treatment of patients with diabetes and obesity who have cardiovascular disease.

What’s ahead? Dr. Bhatt’s vision for the future of the Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital prioritizes investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and in cardiovascular genetics. “I think the two disciplines will be very much coupled in the future, where we will use AI to integrate risks that we can get from a patient’s history, as we do now, but also from imaging and from genetics and from biomarkers from blood and urine specimens. We will be able to integrate that vast amount of knowledge to hopefully improve the care of the individual patient in front of us, but then also to improve the care of populations of patients in New York City and around the world.”

FINDING PEACE IN THE REDWOOD FOREST

I often remind my family and myself on the importance of connecting with nature. Among my friends, I am known for my walks on the beach, and as a health and wellness devotee, I look for new ways to explore nature. This summer, I learned about shinrin-yoku, a Japanese concept that translates to forest bathing. It is the practice of walking through the woods, immersing yourself in the environment and mindfully using your five senses.

So off I went into the deep forest to ground myself. My friend at seven months pregnant and I leisurely walked through the Redwood Forest at Muir Woods in California, connecting with the earth but also connecting with the present. I was in the right spot to achieve some type of sensory experience. Even at my height, standing next to these magnificent Redwood trees—many reaching 250 feet tall, some even growing to 300 feet—was humbling. For two glorious mornings, we grounded ourselves among the Redwoods, and then we scurried back to San Francisco.

Here in one of America’s busiest cities, I realized there is more than one way to reconnect. Yes, I went out west with the intention to go into the forest, and yes, I did make it into the forest. But when I settled back into the city, I connected with what was around me, fulfilling my intention in an entirely different way. I went from moss, dirt and Redwoods to cars, fashion and townhouses. I watched the San Francisco fog shroud the city in a misty embrace. I sipped an early morning latte and watched strangers move. I was quiet. I listened to nearby conversations. I listened to my friends. I met friends of friends. I was opened and privy to conversations. We dined. We strolled. We talked, talked and talked. While the Muir Woods had been quiet and almost echoey, the city was the opposite. Yet in the city, I found myself equally satisfied, happy and connected, just in a different way that I had sought out.

When I started this wilderness excursion, I expected to gain what I needed in the forest, but turns out, what I really wanted was to be around good friends. At the end of my five days in California, I returned calm, refreshed and hopeful for the world. Everything is going to be okay.

If you haven’t, you should find what fills your cup. You may think you need to get away, but maybe the answer is closer to you. This was my reminder that friends often are the best medicine. Good friends enrich your life and improve your health.

Su S hi Mu M i

An i nti MA te O MA k AS e e xperience O n St. M A rk S p l A ce

Sushi Mumi by Chef-Owner Marco Lin, an intimate eight-seat sushi counter, is a serene escape on busy St. Marks Place. Chef Lin began his career in 2007, working with trailblazer sushi Chef Abe at Haru. He then moved to Seattle, where he worked at Nishino, and back to New York, where he served as sushi chef at Michelin-starred Sushi Ginza Ondera, and, thereafter, opened Sushi Mumi in fall of 2022.

Chef Lin’s approach to Sushi Mumi is simple: he combines meticulous skill and has full reign of creativity for his 18-course Edomae-style tasting progression. His varied culinary techniques and surprising combinations help bring out the natural flavors of beautiful, prized seafood sourced primarily from Toyosu Market in Japan.

The expertly presented menu presents a hyper-seasonal experience, evolving as fish come in and out of season. The journey begins with a sequence of five small appetizers, each designed to intrigue and satisfy diners, beginning with Chawanmushi, a steamed egg and corn custard topped with uni and fresh wasabi. Next is Hamo, conger eel from Kanagawa, traditionally served with plum sauce but reimagined by Chef Lin and topped with jasmine vinegar jelly and shiso resulting in a delightful floral flavor. Lastly, the Amadai Urokoyaki, a mainstay item featuring

tilefish with crispy fried scales, in a dense gravy made from female snow crab.

A progression of 10 Nigiri follows, beginning with lighter fish like Hirame (Flounder), cured in kobujime (kelp) which enhances the umami flavor and Kinmedai (Golden Eye Red Snapper) from Katsuura, Chibe —the premier region in Japan for this fish. The journey then moves to richer flavors with O-Toro (fatty tuna), Ko Aji (baby horse mackerel) and Akagi (ark clam), which is just entering its peak harvesting season.

Chef Lin’s signature nigiri features shari (sushi rice) prepared with high pH bottled water that replicates the groundwater found in Japan’s mountainous regions, resulting in firm rice where each grain is distinct. The rice is seasoned with a unique blend of three vinegars, emphasizing acidity over sweetness and paired with a perfectly balanced soy sauce to create an exceptional nigiri experience.

In addition, Chef Lin employs a secret aging process for all his fish (excluding shellfish and silver-skinned varieties). This technique breaks down proteins into amino acids, enhancing the fish’s flavor by imparting greater depth and complexity.

Following the nigiri courses is Chef Lin’s signature Tamago (Sweet Omelette), made with lactose free milk, dashi stock, mirin,

then brûléed with Japanese light brown sugar — a mainstay on the menu.

The meal concludes with a Soup course, featuring Chef Lin’s interpretation of a “seafood Matzah Ball Soup” made with sea scallop, sea bream and house-made dashi. For Dessert, a Yuzu Peppercorn Ice Cream made in-house, which offers a refreshing, tangy flavor and unique texture from the pink peppercorns.

There is also a small, but well curated premium Sake list that ranges from $420 to $1,500. More approachable selection by the glass or carafe ranges from $30 to $80, or $95 to $315 by the bottle. There is also Japanese beer, Umeshu (plum liqueur) and soft drinks.

The simple and understated room dining room sets the tone for a serene dining experience.

The two-hour premium omakase experience is priced at $250 per person, with two seatings daily, Wednesday through Sunday, at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Maison Close, a French dining experience, brings traditional food, elevated beverages and a celebratory atmosphere to SoHo. This concept is inspired by combining the timeless elegance of Parisian flair with a passion for restaurants that turn into a lively party scene through the night.

The vibrant blues, dark oranges and gold accents evoke a warm, inviting atmosphere to reflect the Belle Époque era. An open space dining, designed by DMDesign, encourages social dining and a communal experience. “We pride ourselves on providing a personalized touch to every guest,” Maison Close Owner, Cole Bernard said. “Impeccable service is delivered with a warm, friendly vibe that makes you feel at home.” The atmosphere pairs with sophisticated and accessible French dishes ranging from elegant apéritifs to indulgent desserts.

Executive Chef, Geoffrey Lechantoux has a tremendous wealth of experience from working at Michelin-starred restaurants alongside chefs like Alain Ducasse and Gordon Ramsay. Chef combines his technique with the vibrant energy of Maison Close’s concept in creating a unique dining experience.

If you’re feeling adventurous, a dish that captures the spirit of Maison Close is their Frog Legs. Chef Lechantoux brought this recipe from his years working with Alain Ducasse.

On top of the Frog Legs, Maison Close offers a seasonal menu to keep the offerings fresh for returning guests. Some highlights include Belle Sole Meunière pan seared with a butter foam, Cote de Boeuf served with Choron and Peppercorn sauce and Crepe Suzette with Grand Marnier flambee. Aside from the exquisite dining, the balance of top-tier service and genuine human connection sets Maison Close apart from any other place. Their main goal, outside of providing a 5-star dining experience, is to continue to expand the Maison Close brand. The focus remains on growing other concepts within New York City as they would like to strengthen their presence locally before looking at international expansions.

Leviev Legacy: How Chagit Leviev-Sofiev and Greg Sofiev are Transforming Business and Philanthropy

In the business world and luxury jewelry, the name LEVIEV commands immediate recognition for its unmatched craftsmanship of rare diamonds and high-end jewelry. But for Chagit Leviev-Sofiev and her husband, Greg Sofiev, the legacy of Leviev goes far beyond the sparkle of diamonds. It’s a story rooted in a deep, generational commitment to philanthropy, shaped by Chagit’s childhood spent in the background of her father’s transformative charitable work. Today, as leaders of one of the world’s most prestigious jewelry houses, they channel their success into meaningful, hands-on contributions to the community—whether it’s empowering women in business, providing educational opportunities to underserved youth or offering critical support to families affected by crisis. For the couple, true wealth isn’t measured by the diamonds they sell but by the lives they touch through their unwavering dedication to giving back.

A Legacy of Giving: How the Levievs Committed to a Life of Service

Chagit Leviev-Sofiev was raised in a household where philanthropy wasn’t a side project—it was a way of life rooted in a legacy passed down through generations. Her father, Lev Leviev, a renowned businessman and philanthropist, instilled in his children a profound sense of responsibility to help others, continuing the tradition of giving begun by his parents and grandparents. Lev’s efforts in the Jewish community were legendary. He established over 400 Jewish centers worldwide, revitalizing Jewish life in areas that had long been neglected. His focus on Jewish education was unwavering. Inspired by the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rabbi, he would often say that the key to securing a Jewish future was ensuring access to quality education from a young age, and he wanted to make that accessible to immigrant families. The family’s philanthropy is primarily carried out through The Leviev Foundation, a continuation of their multigenerational commitment to making a difference.

Chagit grew up in this environment, witnessing her father’s tireless dedication to causes that made a difference in people’s lives, “My father always taught us that we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. These are the values I live by today,” Chagit said.

A Power Couple: Blending Business and Benevolence

Chagit and Greg’s journey as a power couple is as extraordinary as their philanthropic impact. Born and raised in NY, Greg had been traveling to Israel for a wedding where he met Chagit, sparking talk of a potential match between the families. At the time, Greg was running a successful jewelry business in New York, creating one-ofa-kind pieces for celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé and Bono. Despite a glamorous lifestyle that had him moving between Los Angeles, Miami and New York, Greg was ready to move to Israel and start anew when Chagit expressed her desire to stay in Israel where her family lived. Selling his business, he relocated and joined the Leviev family enterprise, starting with diamond manufacturing before eventually moving together with Chagit to the US and taking on his current role as CEO of Leviev Diamonds. Chagit, now the CEO & president of Leviev Group USA and head of the ‘Leviev Foundation,’ worked alongside Greg in reshaping the company’s reach, blending his expertise in high-end jewelry with her financial acumen. Together, they’ve not only expanded their business but also carried forward the legacy of Chagit’s parents, renowned for their impactful philanthropy.

Their shared commitment to giving back has seen the establishment of lasting foundations, support for families in need and community-building initiatives that inspire others to contribute.

“Charity is often something people prefer to do quietly and modestly. However, we’ve learned that when people share their charitable efforts, it inspires others to donate and get involved,” Chagit explained. She added, “Charity is not only a moral obligation but also, in Judaism, a commandment to give at least 10% of one’s income, regardless of how much you earn.” Together they aim to set an example for their colleagues and community.

For Chagit and Greg, philanthropy is a family affair. They make a concerted effort to involve their children in their charitable initiatives, showing them firsthand the importance of giving back.

“The best way to share these values with our children is hands-on,” shared Greg. “By taking our children along with us on our philanthropic initiatives, they see firsthand the needs that are out there in the community and the good feeling they get from helping others.” Whether it’s hosting a lemonade stand where the proceeds go to charity or preparing food packages for those in need.

Combining Business with Charity: The Role of Leviev Diamonds and Real Estate Ventures

Chagit’s dedication to philanthropy is balanced by her professional endeavors. Together with her husband, Greg, they manage Leviev Diamonds, the high jewelry house established over four decades ago and widely renowned as one of the world’s leading luxury diamond companies. Headquartered in New York City with a private Fifth Avenue showroom, Leviev offers an unmatched range of high-quality diamonds and sophisticated jewelry designs that embody the company’s deep expertise, superior craftsmanship and timeless elegance.

The heritage diamantaires made history by breaking the diamond monopoly, going directly to the source to ensure unparalleled quality from mine to masterpiece, while establishing ethical and transparent sourcing practices that forever changed the industry. Under the leadership of Chagit and Greg, Leviev Jewelry has continued to flourish, maintaining a commitment to excellence that extends beyond their business into their charitable endeavors, and its pieces have been featured on red carpets, worn by royalty, celebrities and more.

In addition to overseeing the firm’s operations, Chagit manages the Leviev Group USA investments in real estate, technology companies and various ventures that not only bring financial success but also contribute to its broader mission of supporting the community. For both, success is not only measured by profits but by the impact they can make in the lives of others. In this regard, their time is closely intertwined with their philanthropic goals. As Chagit says, “I learned from my father that with philanthropy, it’s not just about writing checks. It’s about being involved from A to Z in projects that we care about.”

“I’ve been deeply inspired by the philanthropy of my father-in-law, and the way he motivates others to give,” Greg shared. “Every time he donates a significant contribution to a worthy cause or establishes a new initiative, something remarkable happens—new donors step forward, inspired by his generosity. This ripple effect allows him to double his impact and foster a culture of giving. It’s a model we’ve embraced in shaping our own efforts, and we continue to witness the incredible results it brings.”

Even with their demanding careers and the responsibilities of raising their five children, the couple’s commitment to community service is unwavering. Greg, for example, is a dedicated volunteer with Hatzalah of Queens, the Jewish emergency medical volunteer organization, and has personally saved lives during his service. His passion for helping others is contagious, inspiring the couple’s friends, business associates and clients to become involved in charitable efforts. This hands-on approach to philanthropy resonates deeply with those around them, as Greg has shown others that true giving extends beyond financial contributions.

Chagit Leviev’s Philanthropic Mission: A Legacy of Giving and Impact

As a dedicated philanthropist and leader, Chagit serves on the boards of numerous organizations that align with her passions. With a heart for causes close to her, Chagit has championed initiatives that advance women in business, provide education and resources for underserved communities and offer aid during crises. Her approach to philanthropy blends her family’s legacy of giving with her personal vision of fostering unity, empowerment and resilience.

One area that she is particularly passionate about is advancing the role of women in business. Chagit understands the unique challenges women face in the professional world, particularly in the male-dominated fields of finance and entrepreneurship. Through organizations like ‘The Jewish Women Entrepreneurs’ (JWE), she has worked tirelessly to support women in business by offering mentorship, organizing annual conferences and providing workshops and resources that empower women to succeed. She is also an active member of Batsheva, an organization that offers motivational support to empower accomplished career women.

In addition, Chagit serves on the advisory board of ‘Ezras Nashim,’ a pioneering organization that provides emergency medical services to women by women. Her involvement was inspired by a personal incident that underscored the critical need for women-centered emergency medical care. The organization was founded by Judge Ruchie Frier- the first Chassidic female judge in the United States, and it aims to address the cultural challenges that prevent women from seeking medical help from male volunteers.

Chagit’s commitment to giving back extends to her heritage, specifically her work with the Bucharian Jewish community, a vibrant group with close to 400,000 members worldwide. Her father’s vision for helping this community began over 25 years ago when he founded the ‘World Bukharian Congress’ to support Bukharian immigrants and unite them as a community. The organization provided scholarships, welfare services and created a sense of community among immigrants who had little to nothing when they arrived in Israel and the United States.

Building on her father’s legacy, Chagit serves as the President of the ‘Jewish Institute of Queens’ (JIQ), which provides sponsored Jewish education to children in need. The school, which started with just a handful of students, has grown to accommodate over 1,000 students at any given time, from preschool to high school. Chagit’s role is hands-on, ensuring the school’s continued success and overseeing its daily operations. The school’s growing operation and expansion, along with the establishment of a third location and the largest summer camp in Queens, reflects her dedication to preserving Jewish education and community support.

In addition to her ongoing charitable efforts, Chagit has been heavily involved in supporting those affected by the recent crisis in Israel through the Leviev Foundation. Following the outbreak of the war on October 7, they mobilized new initiatives to support families who had been displaced by the conflict, arranging for food cards, ice cream trucks and other forms of relief to help families get back on their feet. In her words, “Helping these families in their greatest time of need has been an emotional and necessary response.”

She is also proud to be an advocate for Israel on the global stage, attending numerous events at the United Nations and other international forums to raise awareness and support for the country. She extends her influence to the digital realm as a social media personality followed by tens of thousands of followers, actively involving her audience in philanthropic endeavors that she is involved with, and is a sought after speaker for women. As Chagit shares, “True accomplishment in life is not only about building your own success but about helping others, paying it forward and making an impact in people’s lives. That’s where real happiness lies.”

Delivering Good: Answering the Call in the Wake of Hurricanes, with Industry Support

In the aftermath of hurricanes, when homes are destroyed and lives are upended, necessities become a lifeline for individuals and families in need. This is when Delivering Good steps in, answering the call for help and coordinating efforts to provide relief. But it’s not just about delivering goods; it’s about delivering hope and rebuilding lives. Behind the scenes, brands, retailers and manufacturers from across industries join us to play a critical role in supporting these efforts, contributing essential items that make all the difference to people facing overwhelming hardship.

Answering

the Call: Delivering Good’s Hurricane Relief Efforts

For nearly four decades, Delivering Good has been at the forefront of disaster and poverty relief, providing immediate support when it’s needed most. From clothing and blankets to hygiene products, socks and shoes, Delivering Good mobilizes quickly, working with a network of nonprofit partners across the country to distribute donated goods to those impacted by natural disasters or facing everyday hardships. With each new storm, Delivering Good has risen to the challenge, fi lling gaps left by traditional relief efforts and ensuring that people receive the essentials they need to begin rebuilding their lives.

In recent years, the frequency and intensity of weather and climate events have only increased. The need for an immediate response has become more urgent than ever. While Delivering Good has always been ready to answer the call, the challenge continues to grow.

“We’re seeing more storms than ever before, and yet, there’s never enough product in the pipeline to meet the needs of every impacted community,” says Matthew Fasciano, president and CEO at Deliv-

ering Good. “We are working tirelessly to ensure that we can keep up with the demand, but the reality is that with every new storm, more families are left without the basic comforts they need.”

Industry Partners Respond: Brands Deliver Goods

The success of Delivering Good’s disaster relief efforts hinges on the support of its partners. Brands from across the fashion, footwear, home goods and juvenile products industries have been long-standing supporters of Delivering Good’s mission. In times of crisis, these brands step up to donate new products that are distributed to families in need through Delivering Good’s network of nonprofit partners across the United States.

One such brand is HanesBrands Inc., which has been a strong supporter of Delivering Good’s hurricane relief initiatives and overall support for poverty relief. Teddy Mendoza, global sustainability officer for HanesBrands, shares, “Hurricane Helene devastated communities in our home state of North Carolina, so this storm was personal. We have an enormous opportunity and responsibility to provide comfort to communities in need during a time of crisis or uncertainty. Working with Delivering Good allows us to provide our products to people in need quickly. We’re honored to be part of an industry-wide response that makes a real difference.”

These donations go far beyond mere products; they restore a sense of normalcy and hope to individuals who have lost everything. From providing clean clothes and shoes to families who were forced to flee their homes to offering comfort items like blankets, socks and underwear, these contributions bring immediate relief and dignity during some of the most difficult moments of people’s lives.

The Importance of Partnership

Delivering Good’s ability to respond to disasters relies heavily on its network of community partners, who are on the ground, working directly with the people affected. One of these key partners is Caring for Others, an organization that shares Delivering Good’s mission of helping those in need. Eslene Richmond-Shockley, president/CEO/founder from Caring for Others reflects on the importance of our collaboration:

“When we partner with Delivering Good, we’re not just getting supplies; we’re getting support in making a difference in people’s lives. After a hurricane, it’s not just about surviving—it’s about finding a way to rebuild. Together with Delivering Good, we’ve been able to give people hope, and that’s something you can’t put a price on.”

This shared mission of providing not just relief, but hope, is echoed by many of Delivering Good’s partners. Lenese Naval from True Tabernacle, another key partner, expands on the impact of these donations:

“The partnership we have with Delivering Good allows us to serve our community in ways we never could on our own. After the hurricane, families came to us with nothing, and we were able to provide them with clothing, bedding and basic essentials thanks to Delivering Good. It’s not just about the goods – it’s about helping people rebuild their lives after tragedy.”

These partnerships are critical to Delivering Good’s success in disaster relief as well as relief from everyday hardship. The combined efforts of corporate donors and nonprofit partners ensure that goods are distributed efficiently and reach the people who need them most.

The Reality: More Storms, Never Enough Product

As Delivering Good continues to respond to hurricanes and other disasters, two harsh realities have emerged: there are more storms than ever, and there is never enough product to meet the growing

demand. Climate change has caused an increase in the number and severity of hurricanes, and as a result, more people are being displaced and left without basic necessities. This increased frequency means that Delivering Good must constantly work to replenish its supply of donated goods.

But the supply chain has its limits. Although brands are eager to contribute, the sheer scale of need often outpaces the available resources. “We are grateful for the incredible support we receive from our brand partners, and we are always seeking more donations to meet the demand,” says Merrie Keller, director of Product Procurement. “We never want to turn away a family in need, but there are times when we simply don’t have enough product to distribute.”

Despite these challenges, Delivering Good continues to innovate and adapt its approach to hurricane relief. This year, we unveiled its Basic Comforts Pack at our annual gala in late October. These curated packs contain essential apparel items designed to provide immediate relief to individuals and families affected by disasters. The Basic Comforts Pack represents Delivering Good’s commitment to evolving its response to meet the changing needs of disaster-impacted communities.

Looking Ahead: Delivering Good’s Ongoing Mission

As hurricanes continue to devastate communities across the United States, Delivering Good remains steadfast in its mission to provide relief and restore hope. With the support of its dedicated partners, the organization will continue to answer the call, ensuring that families affected by disaster have access to the basic necessities they need to begin rebuilding their lives.

At the heart of Delivering Good’s work is the belief that everyone deserves hope, dignity and opportunity, especially in times of crisis. “I like to think of our work as bringing the light at the end of the tunnel a little bit closer,” says Fasciano. And with the help of our brand donors, including manufacturers and retailers, that contribute to this mission, Delivering Good will remain a vital force for good in communities across the country.

OctOber 7, 2023

When October 7, 2023, happened, we were all devastated and shocked that in our beloved Israel, there could be a major glitch in the Israeli army’s lack of security to protect the Israelis living right outside of Gaza. Where were the soldiers to safeguard the border and protect the 1,200 people murdered that day and the 251 taken hostage? Will we ever understand what really happened that morning and why so many people were left vulnerable?

As a photographer and conceptual artist, I am constantly thinking and creating. I was heartsick from this massacre in Israel, and I wanted to produce something to document this tragedy. My creativity ignites under stress. I had seen something on Instagram about the dash in obituaries and that dash became the focus of my thinking. Each dash represented one person killed that day and in the aftermath. I wanted the piece to be the colors of the Israeli flag, so I made the background white and each dash blue. The Jewish star was added to finish this project. I was extremely satisfied with the outcome, now I had to share it with the public.

I am so honored that the following institutions accepted my October 7 memorial piece with appreciation and grace. The institutions are as follows:

THE JEWISH MUSEUM IN NEW YORK

THE JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA – FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (FIU) IN MIAMI BEACH

THE WEITZMAN NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORY IN PHILADELPHIA

THE NEW YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY IN NEW YORK CITY

PARK AVENUE SYNAGOGUE - NEW YORK CITY

CENTRAL SYNAGOGUE - NEW YORK CITY

UNITED JEWISH APPEAL (UJA) FEDERATION NEW YORK

JEWISH FEDERATION OF PALM BEACH COUNTY

It was such an honor to visit the Weitzman National Museum in Philadelphia because they hung my October 7 piece immediately in the main lobby. While there, I was also able to witness the devastation of the October 7 massacre in a photography exhibit of the Nova Music Festival showing the grotesque brutality that morning. The photos of this mass murder and cruelty were almost impossible to believe.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Clarence James, the Showcasing of Color and Grit

In the heart of New York’s relentless art scene, where innovation meets history, Clarence James has ignited a profound conversation with his recent exhibition at DTR Modern Gallery. Far from a mere display of art, last month’s showcase titled “Color and Grit: The New Frontier of Black Abstraction” became a powerful testament to identity, legacy, and resilience. At its core, the exhibition paid homage to the often-overlooked figure of the Black cowboy— an icon of both independence and struggle—while redefining the possibilities of Black abstraction in contemporary art.

For those who stepped into the gallery on that memorable September evening, the experience wasn’t just visual; it was visceral. The walls pulsed with energy as James’ bold works came to life. His art, a masterful fusion of street art’s dynamism and fine art’s elegance, captured not only the eye but the soul. Each piece beckoned viewers to confront their own perceptions of identity, resilience and history.

At the heart of the exhibition was a historical narrative that is often erased from mainstream depictions of American culture: the Black cowboy. Clarence James resurrected these forgotten figures through his vibrant, textured canvases, offering a fresh lens through which to view their story. The Black cowboy, long marginalized in the romanticized lore of the American frontier, was brought into sharp focus as a symbol of survival and strength. Each brushstroke in James’ work honored this resilience, breathing new life into these icons, allowing them to ride once more through the boundless frontier of abstraction.

James’ artistic process is as layered and complex as the stories he tells. His canvases, built up with spray paint, acrylics, oil sticks and mop markers, crackle with an almost tangible energy. The rough textures, urban influences and bold colors merge to create works that feel alive—each piece a story unto itself, each layer a testament to both personal and collective history. James doesn’t just paint; he constructs, deconstructs and reconstructs the world around him, using his art to blur the lines between past and present, the personal and the universal.

What sets Clarence James apart, however, is his ability to weave deeply encoded meaning into his abstract works. His canvases are rich with symbols drawn from ancient philosophy, cosmic theory and untold histories. To stand before one of his pieces is to be invited on a journey—a challenge to dig deeper, to decode the layers and to engage with the art on a

more profound level. It’s this ability to merge abstraction with historical narrative that makes his work so compelling, allowing each viewer to find their own path through the intricate web of identity, strength and vulnerability that defines James’ art.

Perhaps the most striking element of the exhibition was how it expanded the conversation around Black abstraction. Clarence James’ work boldly challenges the boundaries of what abstraction can be, infusing the genre with new life, new stories and new voices. His pieces not only demand attention—they demand space. This exhibition was more than just a platform for one artist’s vision; it was a statement about the future of Black voices in art. James is part of a larger movement that seeks to elevate these voices, to rewrite the narrative that has so often excluded them from the canon of art history.

In a world that is quick to compartmentalize, James’ art refuses to be boxed in. He creates a space where abstraction is not just a stylistic choice but a form of resistance—a way to assert identity in the face of erasure. The Black cowboy is no longer a figure relegated to the margins of history; through James’ work, he rides again, as a symbol of self-determination and strength. And in doing so, Clarence James isn’t just making art—he’s making history.

“Color and Grit: The New Frontier of Black Abstraction” was a resounding success, not just for its aesthetic impact but for the dialogue it sparked. Clarence James has proven that abstraction can be as much about story and identity as it is about form and color. His work pushes the boundaries of the genre, offering a new vision of what Black abstraction can achieve—a vision that is as much about reclaiming the past as it is about forging the future.
