Prepare for summer

Get ready for fire season

What a great time of year! With the weather warming up there are a lot of great things happening in Manningham. We recently raised funds for local Country Fire Authority (CFA) brigades at our Mayoral Fireball — let’s continue to help our volunteers keep our community safe by clearing our properties. As we head into the start of the fire season, now is the ideal time to prepare your property and check your fire plan.

With sunnier weather on the horizon our local swimming pool Aquarena starts to become a hive of activity. This year there are some great new swimming programs to brush up your swimming skills, page 7 has more details. If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, try out the newly completed Mullum Mullum Trail. Soccer is also a favourite in Manningham and we are looking forward to seeing the upgrade of our soccer facilities at Pettys Reserve. The State Government grant we received in September will help us build new all-weather soccer fields for local clubs. National Recycling Week is in November, and close to our hearts — recycling helps keep Manningham beautiful and our community has already been doing some great work in reducing the waste we send to landfill.

We are running a number of events during the week to show what you can recycle and where your recyclables go. Find out more on page 10. Sunday 11 November marks 100 years since the First World War ended, and we remember those who have fallen on Remembrance Day. There are lots of opportunities to honour their spirits at local memorial events. You can find details on page 5. Finally, don’t forget to save the date for Manningham Carols during the festive season. Get ready to join us at the beautiful Ruffey Lake Park for some family-friendly fun. Details are on page 6.

Help end family violence

Family violence can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, age, sexuality, economic status, cultural or faith backgrounds and abilities. Approximately 1 in 4 women in Australia have experienced violence at the hands of an intimate partner or ex partner. Abuse can come in many forms — physical violence, as well as emotional, financial, spiritual, verbal and psychological abuse. We are participating in the global awareness-raising campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence to help end violence against women.

Our next parenting seminar on Thursday 15 November will highlight how learning life skills, self-esteem and resilience are all promoted through encouraging and allowing children to play. manningham.vic.gov.au/theimportance-of-childhood-andplay

YOUR SAY

The campaign begins on White Ribbon Day on 25 November and concludes on 10 December, which is Human Rights Day, emphasising the fact that violence, in any form, is a violation of human rights.

To reduce gender-based violence, we as a community must address the underlying cause of violence against women — gender inequality.

Art in the car park ARTS

A community art project has breathed new life into the car park at Tunstall Square shopping centre in Doncaster East. We worked with the Tunstall Square Traders Association and local artists to turn 14 car parking spaces into an artist’s canvas, helping to make it a fun and vibrant place to shop. During September, volunteers from Scouts, schools and community groups joined forces with local artist Kimberley Hughes to design and paint art on the parking spaces.

The artworks were painted directly onto the asphalt of Tunstall Square’s car park — an innovative approach as public community art is usually done as wall murals.

Indigenous artist Dale Wandin and the design inspired by his son’s illness.

It’s thought that pollens and a particular combination of thunderstorm and wind currents can make some people sick very suddenly. The Victorian Government recently launched its 2018 public health campaign to ensure we are all as prepared as we can be for another epidemic thunderstorm asthma event.

Mayor Cr Andrew Conlon said “There’s a wealth of creative talent in our region and this art project is yet another way to showcase these skills while improving the visual landscape of the shopping centre.” Thank you to the 14 local groups, including Rotaract Australia, Donvale Primary School, St Gregory the Great Primary School, and Our Lady of the Pines Primary School for helping to create the artwork.

Swim for life

The Doncaster Dolphins Masters Swimming Club is an adult swimming club affiliated with Masters Swimming Australia. Established in 1983, it is one of the longest running clubs in Victoria. The Dolphins’ special 4 week Swim for Life program for adults 18 years and over is starting again this month.

Water safety begins with you. Water’s everywhere and it’s not always clear, clean and heated. Learn water safety and personal survival skills for the beach, river, lake and even your pool at home. Young children are fascinated by water. Recognise and reduce potential water dangers around your home — like nappy buckets, fish ponds, bathtubs and wading or swimming pools. To keep your family safe, on and around water, the professionals at Aquarena recommend: • Be within arm’s reach when your family is in, on or around water. • Ensure that there is attentive supervision at all times — don’t get distracted by a book or your phone. • Make sure your pool fence is safe and secure and the lock is working properly at all times. • Enrol your kids in a learn to swim program.

Aquarena Aquatics Manager, Olivia Lie is looking forward to summer.

“I’m super excited to head into the summer and share our wonderful new swimming lesson program with the Manningham community.

The program is free, but pool entrance fee and other conditions apply. Members of the club come together for fun, fitness and friendship through swimming for competition and fitness. To join Swim for Life, go to the website to download an application form or call Aquarena Aquatic and Leisure Centre to register 9848 1300.

Whether you are just starting out or swimming at squad level, we have a program to cater for you. From 6 month olds to adults, we have programs for all ages and abilities on offer here at the centre. We can’t wait to see you at Aquarena Aquatic and Leisure Centre,” Ms Lie said.

COMMUNITY

Be prepared for summer Victoria’s hot, dry summers are great for holidays — but they can be dangerous too. Stay safe with these tips and resources.

KNOW YOUR RISKS You don’t have to live near bushland for your home to be at risk of fire — and remember that grassfires can be just as dangerous as bushfires. Make sure you know what to do if you live close to grassland in a rural area or where the suburbs meet grassland. Take a look at the information available on CFA’s website. cfa.vic.gov.au/about/plan-andprepare

BACK UP PLANS Fires are unpredictable and it's important to remember that home emergency plans can fail. Having a back-up plan that identifies your shelter or last resort options may save your life if you are caught in a fire. cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/ back-up-plans

MONITOR EMERGENCY WARNINGS Tune into local radio ABC774, Eastern 98.1FM and/or Plenty Valley 88.6FM. If your phone is in an area impacted by an emergency — and phone service is available — alert information may be sent to your landline as a voicemail message or to your mobile phone as a text message.

You can also download the Bureau of Meteorology app to your smart phone. The app can give you detailed weather information based on your location. bom.gov.au/app PLAN FOR PETS Ensure you have a way to safely transport your pets and livestock. If possible, have options for places your pets can stay in an emergency.

CONNECT WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURS Discuss your emergency plan and how you can support each other. Identify and connect with neighbours who may need assistance planning for an emergency and discuss how you may be able to help.

PREPARE YOUR PROPERTY A great way you can reduce the risks bushfires pose to your home and family is to remove overgrown vegetation from your property. The Manningham Planning Scheme includes controls about the removal of vegetation, particularly native

GET RE-USING AND RECYCLING IN

National Recycling Week ENVIRONMENT

Founded by Planet Ark in 1996, National Recycling Week celebrates the environmental benefits of recycling and is held from Monday 12 to Sunday 18 November. The annual campaign promotes recycling initiatives to increase understanding of what items can and cannot be recycled and improve understanding of the kerbside recycling process. Manningham has achieved some great recycling results this year. We recycled 54.1% of our waste, sending the lowest tonnage of waste to landfill ever recorded for Manningham. We are hosting a display at The Pines Shopping Centre from Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 November.

Come down and have a chat to staff from council and Visy who are there to answer all your questions about recycling.

See the recycling sorting process of each type of material up close before it’s taken to be made into new products.

There will be some great giveaways for children, including activity booklets, lunch boxes and items made from recyclable materials.

Transport to the Visy recycling sorting facility is available, meet us at the Manningham Civic Centre.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR RECYCLING? Come along and find out about recycling at Visy’s recycling sorting facility in Heidelberg on Tuesday 13 November.

Kicking goals at Pettys Reserve We love our sports in Manningham and soccer is fast becoming a favourite. In fact, there are over 1,700 players in Manningham and that number increases each season. To support our soccer lovers, we have been working towards developing a regional soccer facility at Pettys Reserve as part of our Capital Works Program over the next 3 years. Mayor Cr Andrew Conlon said the development will be a massive win for Manningham’s soccer community.

“The redevelopment will help address the growing demands on our facilities and give our clubs an edge above the rest,” he said. The new facility will feature two synthetic soccer fields with floodlighting, a new sports pavilion and extra car parking. The new fields will allow players to enjoy use of the facility throughout the year. It will be shared and enjoyed by our local sporting clubs and be accessible to all ages, gender and abilities.

In September, Minister for Sport John Eren visited Pettys Reserve in Templestowe and announced an $800,000 grant to help redevelop the reserve into a state-of-the-art soccer facility. Cr Conlon thanked Sport and Recreation Victoria for the generous contribution to the project and said the grant would benefit Manningham’s sporting communities for many years to come. At the announcement, former Socceroo and Executive Manager Facilities and Advocacy of Football Federation Victoria, Gary Cole, congratulated Manningham and said it would be a great community hub for local clubs. You can expect to start kicking goals at the new Pettys Reserve facility at the start of the 2021 winter season.

Take a hike (or ride)

The Mullum Mullum Trail opened in September and is the major attraction of the Mullum Mullum Creek Linear Park. Stretching from the Yarra River in Templestowe to the EastLink Trail in Donvale, the new Mullum Mullum Trail is an 18.5km walking or bicycling trail through the bush, perfect for nature lovers. Get the family outside with your bikes or hiking shoes and discover tawny frogmouths, cockatoos, butcher birds, platypus and wildflowers (especially in spring). You might even come across a koala or two. Make a day of it and enjoy a picnic at the tables dotted along the trail. There are plenty of places to stop and have a play with the kids at one of the many playgrounds within easy access of the trail.
