Submissions to the North East Link (NEL) project’s Environment Effects Statement (EES) close on 7 June and we’ve been busy preparing a response on how we believe this project will impact Manningham.

A dedicated team of Council officers have been working hard to ensure our submission best represents the interests of our community and advocates the best outcomes for Manningham.

The EES covers the impacts of the NEL project in areas such as community wellbeing, business, transport, traffic, environment, landscape, recreation, habitat, cultural heritage, land stability and waste management.

As a Council, we’re ensuring our response addresses all aspects of the EES but your voice needs to be heard too. Your individual and unique stories may help influence the outcome and development of the NEL project and we encourage all residents to respond to the EES and share how this project impacts you.

The more individual responses submitted by the Manningham community, the greater the chance we have of making an impact.

Councillors will be considering Manningham’s EES submission at a special council meeting scheduled for Tuesday 4 June. A draft version of Manningham’s submission will also be available on our website from late May. As the weather starts to cool, like many families in Manningham I find the washing piling up as my husband and I spend our weekends between our children’s basketball and football commitments. Sport plays such a large role in connecting us and Manningham has no shortage of clubs to get involved with.

If basketball or football aren’t for you, you could try out archery with the Yarra Bowmen, see page 7.

Reconciliation Week offers us a chance to reflect once again on our long history, come along and visit the exhibition in the Manningham Art Gallery or join us for a film screening and panel discussion. You can find out more on page 11 of this issue.

There’s no excuse for elder abuse World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is commemorated each year on 15 June to highlight one of the worst manifestations of ageism and inequality in our society: elder abuse.

WHAT IS ELDER ABUSE?

WHERE CAN I GET HELP?

Any act which causes harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they know and trust such as a family member or friend. It may involve taking someone’s money or possessions, not providing necessary care, making threats or stopping an older person’s social contacts, as well as physical or sexual abuse.

If you believe you are a victim of elder abuse or know someone who is, you can contact the organisations below for assistance.

HOW CAN YOU TELL IF SOMEONE IS A VICTIM OF ELDER ABUSE? A person affected by elder abuse may: • act fearfully or withdraw from those around them • show signs of stress, anxiety or depression • show signs of bruising or other physical injuries • not have the ability to pay normal bills or have unpaid bills.

HOW CAN YOU HELP STOP ELDER ABUSE? To help prevent and stop elder abuse: • stay connected in your community • plan for your future • seek independent advice • develop a support network of trusted friends and professionals • if you need help, ask for it as soon as possible.

Templestowe kicks goals with women’s football A newly created senior women’s team at Templestowe Football Club is coming together to embark on their first season.

Playing together for the very first time at a Lightening Premiership in March, the team had a chance to test their skills on the field. Laughs were had as they found their feet and nursed many aching muscles over the following days.

Hosted by the club, the premiership saw 56 women’s teams come from Melbourne and country Victoria to compete over 2 days of competition.

Templestowe Football Club is already home to successful junior teams for girls aged from under 10 all the way to under 16. Vice President Nicole Muleta said they noticed a gap once girls were too old to continue to play in the junior teams and wanted to find a way to keep players at the club and encourage new women to join.

Captain Jodie Van Kerckhof led the team out onto the field for the first game of the official season in April, and said the players, aged from 22 to 52, came from a range of different backgrounds and fitness levels.

Many had no experience playing football before joining but had found it a great way to get started and make some new friends along the way. Coach Sammy Noble and assistant coach James Waldon are putting them through their paces.

The team are still looking for new recruits – if you’re thinking about joining, go ahead and reach out, you will be welcomed by a sea of friendly faces.

E-WASTE BAN TO LANDFILL IS COMING SOON The Victorian Government is banning e-waste (electronic waste) going to landfill as of 1 July 2019. e-waste is the world’s fastest growing waste stream. In 2016, 44.7 million tonnes of e-waste was generated worldwide and only about 20 per cent was recycled. Over the coming years, the amount of global e-waste is expected to increase to 52.2 million tonnes in 2021.

WHAT IS E-WASTE? e-waste refers to any item with a plug, battery or cord that is no longer working or wanted, such as large appliances like fridges; small appliances like toasters and hair dryers; IT, telecommunications and TV equipment like computers and printers; lighting equipment such as fluorescent lamps; electrical and electronic tools like drills and sewing machines; toys, leisure and sports equipment such as hand held video games and radios.

WHY SHOULD IT BE RECYCLED? Most e-waste contains valuable materials which can be recycled. e-waste also contains hazardous materials, such as heavy metals like lead, mercury and cadmium, which should be kept out of landfill.

WHERE CAN I RECYCLE MY E-WASTE? Council hard waste collection service

Residents with a Council residential waste service are eligible for up to 2 hard waste collections per year. e-waste can be collected as a part of a hard waste collection.

Right on target with the Yarra Bowmen Tucked away along the beautiful Yarra River and bush trails, you will find the sport of archery being practiced here in Manningham.

The Yarra Bowmen Archery Club is located in Bulleen Park, off Bulleen Road, just as you exit the Eastern Freeway. Established in 1963, the club is run entirely by volunteers and has had a long history in the Manningham area.

In the multicultural kitchen A love of food and learning a language combine at Pines Learning for a cooking class with a difference.

Students learning English can embrace their cultural diversity and culinary skills in this Multicultural Kitchen cooking class. Run twice a year for 8 weeks, the course is a fun and interactive way to learn English and share lunch afterwards. Students teach each other to prepare dishes from their home countries, sharing recipes and stories, as well as learning some cooking from their teacher – in this case Mexican nachos.

Attendees have the opportunity to perfect new cooking skills, taste foods they’ve never tried before and learn about cuisines and dishes they may have seen in cafes and restaurants.

Last term, students tried their hands at making bread, pasta, cakes and biscuits as well as creating dishes reflecting their own cultures such as dumplings or Persian rice dishes. This popular course is running currently and a new course will be starting in term 3.

A registered club of Archery Victoria, Yarra Bowmen welcome new members. If you’ve ever wondered about the sport, it’s the perfect time to give it a go. Beginners courses are run throughout the year for anyone aged 10 and up. No bow is required to get started as the club will loan bows to beginners doing the course.

Take a walk around Manningham Over and out: Buddy clocks off after 50 years You may not be familiar with William ‘Buddy’ Darmody, but you’ve certainly seen his contribution around Manningham.

As our longest serving staff member and a jack of all trades, William has put down his tools for the last time, retiring after an exemplary 50 year career at Manningham.

Affectionately known as ‘Buddy’, William began his Council career in March 1969 as an eager 16 year-old with an intellectual disability.

Liz Clarke, Buddy’s sister and carer, said Buddy joined Manningham (then known as The City of Doncaster and Templestowe) after he left school.

‘Buddy has been there ever since, working as a road crew, trade assistant, maintaining the workshop and more recently washing and detailing Council fleet vehicles,’ she said.

‘He has never not wanted to go to work, even when he’s been unwell, which is a testament to the friendship and support he received from staff and the organisation.

‘It’s incredible what a positive work environment can have on an individual’s life.’

Manningham CEO Andrew Day acknowledged Buddy’s contribution to the community and said Buddy received the distinctive honour as the longest serving staff member Manningham has had.

‘50 years’ service is an incredible achievement,” he said.

‘The one gift Buddy can absolutely walk away with is the one we all crave for, the love and respect of friends and colleagues.’

Buddy said while it was incredibly sad to leave, he felt it was the right time to retire and enjoy life.

‘I am grateful for the opportunities Manningham Council has given me over all these years,” he said.

Buddy is the only employee in Manningham to have a section of a roadway named in his honour.

Buddy’s Way, the road into Manningham’s Depot Office was named after Buddy when he celebrated 45 years of service.

Donvale Hill Probus Club has a keen walking group who get together to enjoy a stroll through the parks and paths around our diverse community.

The group meets on Mondays to stretch their legs and then joins together to share a coffee afterwards in a nearby cafe. The route changes each week, allowing the group to explore new areas and see a range of wildlife along the way.

Favourite walks of the group include: • Along the Mullum Mullum Creek, from Heads Road to Yarran Dheran.

Walking upstream along a wellestablished track with welltimbered surrounds and viewing plenty of cockatoos in the big trees.

• Heading downstream, from the same starting point following a recently re-established path with great boardwalks and sights of small bird life to enjoy along the way.

• The Yarra Trail from Beasley's nursery following the Mullum Mullum Creek though to the Yarra River. Kangaroos are in good numbers here and the parrot life plentiful. There are signs of a big population of wombats on the river banks but they are seldom sighted in day light.

Celebrating cultural diversity at Doncaster Primary Doncaster Primary School celebrated the cultural background of our community during Cultural Diversity Week.

Students explored different countries and cultures through daily class activities during the week. These included a scavenger hunt around the school, a Harmony Day lunch on the oval, sharing delicious gelato, taking part in plenty of competitions and activities marking Persian New Year.

The week’s festivities culminated in a vibrant dress up parade and assembly and gave students a better understanding of the range of countries we have come from, languages we speak and faiths we follow.

FIREFIGHTERS SOUND THE ALARM ON SMOKE ALARM MAINTENANCE The Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) has revealed that working smoke alarms were present in just 38% of the 29 homes where a fire occurred in Manningham during 2018. In fact, 2 of the homes crews were called to did not have a smoke alarm installed at all.

Working smoke alarms provide a vital early warning and are designed to help you and your loved ones escape during a fire.

National Reconciliation Week The 2019 National Reconciliation Week theme Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage will be reflected in an exhibition, film screening and panel discussion during this year’s activities in Manningham from 27 May to 3 June.

Warrigal Creek Massacre film screening

Exploring themes from identity to postcolonial theory and feminism to street culture, this year’s exhibition showcases the unique voices of contemporary Indigenous artists from across Victoria. Grounded in Truth will feature 5 artists from 2 generations of the Young family – Lyn-Al, Robert, Judith, Richard and Raymond and will reflect on notions of honesty, openness, and truth.

A documentary about the 1893 massacre believed to have resulted in the murder of as many as 150 Gunai Kurnai people will be screened as part of National Reconciliation Week. The film includes contributions and commentary from historians, a descendent of the Highland Brigade, the current owner of the land where the massacre took place and a number of local Aboriginal people.

It will pose questions about which and whose truths we listen to and prompt dialogue around perspectives on history. It will also explore the process of collaborating and working together, how a collective past is reflected in artwork done today and how of art can be a conduit for understanding and healing.

Made by a small number of nonindigenous staff and students at Swinburne University in 2017, the film aims to bring to light just one of the many terrible events that occurred in our colonial past that remain largely hidden.
