PRE-LOVED JEWELLERY: A REASON TO CELEBRATE Stephen Cohu shares his wisdom on pre-loved jewellery

T

here are many reasons for people to consider buying a piece of jewellery to celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, a birth, or a gift for a friend, but the best reason is that it is beautiful and makes the wearer feel special. And with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, a carefully chosen pre-loved jewel will always be a winner. The human race has adorned itself with all manner of jewellery for thousands of years, from

18

pre-history to the present day, and although styles may change, the meanings remain the same. A gift of remembrance, a celebration of a special moment, a simple gesture of love or friendship or perhaps just a purchase for its beauty and enjoyment, jewellery has it all. Antique and pre-loved jewellery is an excellent way of celebrating, there doesn’t even need to be a particular reason, buy it and enjoy it for its quality and uniqueness and of course its great value for money compared to buying new.

www.mannermagazine.co.uk

JEWELLERY

The popularity of diamonds for engagement rings really took off in about 1947 when De Beers, the world’s largest diamond company, came up with the advertising slogan “A diamond is forever”.

Many people’s perceptions of vintage or antique jewellery will be that it is old-fashioned. Still, an attractively priced Victorian diamond brooch will look fabulous against a dark sweater or jacket and can be worn on any occasion. Antique and vintage pieces are hand-crafted and unique and will often provoke a “Wow!” reaction. Anniversaries are one of the most popular times to buy jewellery. The etiquette for what to buy to celebrate which anniversary only became standardised in the early 20th century with the publication of “Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics and at Home”, published in 1922, which listed gift suggestions for specific key milestone years. This list has been added to and modernised over the last 100 years to become the standard list we have today. Different countries have different lists and, likewise, different birthstones. In the UK, you have to wait 25 years for silver, 30 pearl, 35 coral, 40 ruby, 50 gold, 55 emerald and 60 years for diamond. You should not wait 60 years to give a loved one a diamond!

Perhaps surprisingly, one of the recent developments in “tradition” has been giving a diamond solitaire as an engagement ring. The popularity of diamonds for engagement rings really took off in about 1947 when De Beers, the world’s largest diamond company, came up with the advertising slogan “A diamond is forever”. Before this, any stone could be given; we see many antique engagement rings containing coloured stones. Such is the power of marketing that today, it would be seen as out of place not to give a diamond for an engagement. Things are changing, though, with our younger clientele seeking out unique jewels that can be any precious stone, antique and vintage pieces with a story to tell with previous lives of love and devotion. So much has changed from Roman times when engagement rings signified a man owned the woman, with nothing to do with love or sentiment! Let’s take a more detailed look at some fine pieces of antique and contemporary jewellery and a few pointers for what to look out for. 

SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND LATE VICTORIAN NAVETTE SHAPE RING The navette-shaped ring became popular in the late 19th to the early 20th century as a revival of antique pieces excavated on Roman and Etruscan archaeological sites. This unmarked 18ct gold ring features good-size old minecut diamonds with just a few facets each and cushion-cut sapphires of a solid blue colour. As a piece of antique jewellery in its original little worn condition, it would make a fine, wearable addition to any collection at an affordable price. Sapphire & Diamond Ring SOLD DIAMOND SOLITAIRE RING The solitaire ring is the classic way of setting a diamond that is good enough to stand alone or with small shoulder scintillants. With a solitaire, the price will be entirely dependent on the four Cs: carat weight, cut, clarity and colour. Diamonds are formed deep within the huge pressures of the earth’s core and take millions, if not billions of years, to reach the surface through volcanic activity; therefore, every diamond is unique. Diamonds are graded according to the four Cs, and newly cut stones are often sold with a certificate. Older cut stones are partly priced on grade, but as important is how the stone looks,

20

being lively with plenty of fire. The GIA grading scale is the industry standard, but many gem laboratories grade stones not necessarily all to the same standard. This solitaire diamond has been graded as 3.2ct weight, colour G/H, clarity VS, old round brilliant cut. The stone is much older than the ring, a 19th-century cut stone mounted in a signet ring in the 1980s. Diamond Solitaire Ring £19,500 RENAISSANCE REVIVAL PENDANT Renaissance revival jewellery became very popular in the 19th century, and many pieces were made with such craftsmanship and skill that they fooled many into believing they were originals from the 15th and 16th centuries. This stunning jewel was crafted in the last quarter of the 19th century and is almost certainly AustroHungarian. It is made of silver with coloured enamel decoration and is set with old mine-cut diamonds, pink sapphires, and an emerald suspended under three natural pearls. Considering its vulnerability, this piece is in exceptional condition and is perfectly wearable as a dramatic addition to any occasion. Good Renaissance revival jewellery is rare, highly sought after, and very collectable, so expect to pay in the thousands for a good example. Renaissance Pendant £2800

JEWELLERY

TRILLION-CUT TANZANITE PENDANT A double line of tiny round brilliant cut diamonds surrounds this triangular tanzanite. Tanzanite is a blue stone showing a purple tinge between a blue sapphire and amethyst. The most vibrant tanzanites are graded AAA and are very sought after. Unlike diamonds, tanzanite has a fixed price per carat. A two-carat diamond will be significantly more than double the price of a similar grade 1ct diamond, whereas tanzanite will be double. Tanzanite Pendant £1950 OPAL NEGLIGEE NECKLACE These asymmetrical designs appeared in the late 19th century, where this example dates from. Featuring three fabulous boulder opals that glow and flash vibrant rainbow colours set in unmarked gold (tests as 15ct), this eminently wearable piece takes us back to the glamour of late Victorian and Edwardian times. Many different colours of opals are formed from hydrated silica deposited in cracks in rocks where water very slowly passes through. It takes millions of years to form a large opal, and much opal bearing stone is not of gem quality. They are not of crystalline structure, so they are usually cut in cabochon or bead form. The finest opals come from Lightning Ridge in Australia, displaying exquisite flashes of rainbow colour. Opals come in many colours, from black to

white; orange ones are called fire opals, and the value is entirely dictated by the beauty of the light that plays as the stone is moved. Opal Necklace £950 RUBY CLUSTER RING This 18ct yellow gold and platinum ring is set with an oval mixed cut ruby of just over 2 carats, surrounded by round brilliant cut diamonds totalling 1.56ct. It is a classic design; the style is suitable for any coloured main stone, such as ruby, sapphire or emerald. Ruby is a common material but rarely found in cuttable gem quality crystals. As with diamonds, Ruby values are based on the four Cs but with much more importance placed on colour, pigeon blood red being the most valuable. All rubies contain imperfections in the form of cracks or rutile inclusions, and a clean ruby should be looked at with great suspicion as they will either be synthetic or heavily treated. Rubies are usually always paired with diamonds, as a ruby on its own is often rather lacklustre. Ruby Ring £3650 Pre-loved jewellery not only celebrates past and future love but is eminently wearable to give pleasure to the wearer, a wealth of beautiful, unique, craftsman-made pieces at very affordable prices. Stephen Cohu stocks a vast range of jewellery at the St Lawrence showroom, which will give you as many ideas as you ever need. A celebration for every occasion, you really can’t go wrong! 

WHAT MOTHERS REALLY WANT FOR MOTHER'S DAY What do Mothers really want for Mother's Day? Harriet Rouse shares simple, thoughtful ideas that don't have to cost the Earth.

22

www.mannermagazine.co.uk

FEATURE

"It’s just like any other day, but with the added risk of crumbs in the bed..."

A

h, Mother’s Day. That day of the year when all around you sparkles, the world thanks you for your contribution to the survival of the human race, the piles of washing magically disappear, ‘normal life’ suspends, and all of a sudden, the children know how to lie in, not teeth, not need a wee in the middle of the night, and their rooms are magically tidy, they do everything you ask them to when you ask them to, and the home is tidy, clean, and it’s all about YOU and what you’d like to do. Just kidding. Of course, it’s just like any other day, but with the added risk of crumbs in the bed, a child scalding themself when getting you a coffee or tea, and then – of course – the pressure of gifts. Added to the usual pressures of daily mumming, Mother’s Day can be tough on some people for many reasons. Whether relationships with their own mothers are strained or complicated, or they have been bereaved, whether they have children of their own or are struggling with loss or fertility issues, Mother’s Day isn’t always easy. Stemming from the Christian calendar, when people would return to their ‘Mother Church’ where they were baptised shortly after Easter, it became synonymous with family get-togethers. After the First World War, Mothering Sunday became a way to celebrate mothers whose sons had not returned from the Great War and acknowledge their sacrifice. So, with the history lesson set to one side, what do you really, really, really want for Mother’s Day (aside from the aforementioned magical pile of washing being done and homes being tidied)? In this time of a cost-of-living crisis, there is real pressure on gifting for Mother’s Day, and if you know the perfect something for the Mum, please go for it. But otherwise, the pressure should be removed. We’ve come up with some ideas, as well as some other budget-friendly ones. Thoughtful gifting really can be simple (and free!); what most people really, really want is for us to remember, for us to help, and for the kitchen not to look like an actual flour/egg bomb has gone off when the kids have helped to make breakfast in bed… and for us to check in with those women in our lives for whom things might not be so easy. 

PERFECT GIFTS FROM YOUNGER KIDS • Pick a posy of flowers. Daffodils are in season, and even two or three in an old glass jar, lovingly foraged by the kids, is the sweetest gesture. If you want to elevate it a bit, buy a small bud vase, and the kids can pick some flowers once a week. • Make some cakes or cookies. Obviously, Mum will share (make sure you clean up afterwards!) • An original piece of art – a.k.a a picture drawn by the kids. There are some fantastic and easy framing options, so if it’s something really lovely, it can be admired for years to come. • Handmade card – almost essential.

PERFECT GIFTS FROM TEENAGERS • See above • Breakfast or dinner (with table the laid, flowers, and no moaning about cleaning up afterwards!) •A book of vouchers that can be cashed in with chores, room tidies, and nights off cooking (great to create yourself!). • If the kids want to pitch in some money together, a voucher for a massage or spa trip is a lovely gift.

PERFECT GIFTS FROM GROWN-UPS • See all of the above • View the gift guide on the next page...

ECO-CHIC WEDDING CELEBRATIONS Jersey Hospice Care can help you have your dream day, without the hefty price tag.

L

iving in Jersey, we’re no stranger to things costing a little more. It’s the price we pay for living on a small, but beautiful island. And because it’s so picturesque, it’s a wonderful place to have a wedding. Whether you’re tying the knot in the scenic St Brelade’s Bay,

26

surrounded by the vineyards at La Mare Wine Estate, or in one of the many stunning churches or manor houses around the island, you want to look the part too... Which can leave you with a final bill that leads to your first fight as a betrothed couple! That’s where Jersey Hospice

www.mannermagazine.co.uk

Care’s Preloved Bridal Boutique comes into the picture. Not only could you save yourself a penny or two, but you could secure that ultimate vintage find, be a sustainable fashion trailblazer and be swept away by the beauty of sentimental value.

REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BUY PRELOVED FOR YOUR WEDDING: SUSTAINABILITY IN EVERY STITCH We’re all becoming more and more aware of our effects on the environment, and how even small steps can make a big difference. We see it with the rise in people choosing to avoid fast fashion and instead opt for charity shop finds. Well, why not do the same for your wedding? Hospice’s preloved wedding range provides an ecofriendly alternative that aligns perfectly with the growing trend of sustainable weddings. By choosing preloved items, you actively participate in reducing the carbon footprint associated with wedding preparations, contributing to a more sustainable and eco-conscious celebration. THE SENTIMENTAL TOUCH Did you ever love raiding your mum’s or grandma’s wardrobe when you were a child? There was something magical about finding hidden gems stashed in the back of the cupboard or boxed up in the attic from years gone by and trying them on. 80’s shoulder pads aside, being able to wear something that has its own story and was worn and loved by someone else is quite special. It means on your special day; your dress or accessory carries the love and celebration from its previous life into yours. Embracing preloved items adds a layer of history to your wedding, turning it into a celebration of

shared joy and countless love stories – especially if you then pass it on and continue the trend! COST-EFFECTIVE ELEGANCE Last year, the average cost of a wedding dress in the UK was £1,350. If you shop preloved, it could save you thousands – and that means more money for the honeymoon, or towards a deposit for your forever home – this is Jersey after all! If you’d like to shop the range, Jersey Hospice Care is hosting the Preloved Wedding Fair at La Mare Wine Estate on 24th February, from 10am to 3pm. It’ll feature a wide range of preloved and ex-display bridal wear and accessories – some of which will be showcased in catwalk shows throughout the day. There’ll be complimentary bubbles and canapés while you browse the collection. If you can’t make that, you can also contact Jersey Hospice Care Stores (01534 487982) to see the collection. And something to bear in mind as you’re browsing the preloved treasures – not only will you be saving yourself money while planning your dream wedding, but you’ll be supporting the invaluable work Jersey Hospice Care do. So let your wedding be a celebration of love, style, and a greener, more compassionate world. 

COVER STORY

ELSIE-MAY BAKER Elsie-May Baker, the lead singer of party band Ruby Rouge, talks to us about her experience working on cruise ships and forming two local bands. PHOTOGRAPHS BY MAX YOUNG

E

lsie-May Baker, the lead singer of the party band Ruby Rouge, was destined to be a performer. "My mum worked on cruise ships as a dancer in the '70s and even lived with the Italian Mafia whilst rehearsing, and my great Auntie Annette, who recently passed away, was the principal ballerina at the Royal Ballet in Sadler's Wells. As a child, I took every dance class imaginable – Ballet, Modern, Tap, Jazz, Greek etc." Elsie trained at Lane Theatre Arts for a year before embarking on an eight-year stint for Carnival Cruise Lines, the largest cruise company in the world. She spent the first three years as a dancer,

28

travelling the world from her bunk bed cabin, drinking margaritas on the beach in Mexico. Initially, the shows had 14 dancers and 2 singers, but Carnival soon changed their requirements, halving the number of cast members and requesting all cast members to sing and dance. "You were a triple threat or out." There were two options – a Singer/Dancer or a Dancer/Singer (the former being the predominant art). "With dancing being my strong point, I auditioned to be a Dancer/Singer and absolutely loved it!" After a couple of contracts and a newfound love for singing, Elsie decided to take on the challenge of auditioning for lead vocalist.

www.mannermagazine.co.uk

This role paid more, and they were granted a double occupancy cabinno more bunk beds or sharing a postage-stamp-size bathroom. "I had no experience singing other than a few lessons in college which I'd skive or hide in the back, so never really got a chance to learn my voice. After two years of practicing in storage cupboards on the ship, I earned myself the lead vocalist position and that doublebed cabin!" As a lead vocalist, Elsie soon learned that the higher the pay cheque, the greater the responsibility. With 10 shows a week, Elsie's priorities shifted, and her vocal health and voice stamina became top priority – no more margaritas on the beach. 

JACKET £270 / JEANS £234 30 AT VOISINS ALL SAINTS

www.mannermagazine.co.uk

COVER STORY

"If I couldn't find work in Jersey, I needed to create the work." Over the course of 8 years, Elsie has visited places worldwide, including most of the Caribbean, Hawaii, much of Europe, Australia and the French Polynesian Islands. One of her favourite memories is chartering a sailboat for her mum's 60th birthday around Maui during whale mating season with pods of 12-15 humpback whales as far as the eye could see. Another high point for Elsie was becoming the first female lifeboat Coxswain after noticing that Carnival had only ever appointed Coxswain to male crew. RETURNING TO JERSEY After 8 years at sea, Elsie wanted to return to shore but continue her new singing career and landed a job in Majorca in a singing trio. Sadly, Covid had other ideas, and the contract got cancelled. Returning to Jersey, Elsie started her own family and spent time brainstorming ways to keep doing what she loved while living in the place she loved, Jersey. "I have always adored our little island, but being a performer, I never thought I could live here without a complete career change. So, back to the drawing board - if I couldn't find work in Jersey, I needed to create the work. The only job I could think of that I adored (other than working on ships) was a summer that I covered as a singer in a local band that played at a lot of weddings. I

loved being a part of a couple's big day. Weddings are incredibly happy events, so I couldn't think of a better industry to jump into feet first." RUBY ROUGE Having worked with many incredible live bands on the ships, Elsie knew exactly what style of music she wanted to play, the songs that got people up on the dance floor, what a band should look like and the energy they needed to keep their audience engaged. It was a no-brainer. The next hurdle was finding like-minded musicians who wanted to participate in the project. Ruby Rouge initially launched with musicians back in Jersey due to Covid. Once Covid had settled down, most of the original band members left Jersey (bar Elsie and drummer Marcus) to pursue their music careers worldwide. After putting out a call for new band members, Ruby Rouge was relaunched and now consists of Elsie (lead vocalist), Marcus (drummer), Mia (keys), Ben (guitarist) and James (bassist). "We are really close as a group, banter being our number one form of communication. I'd say we're more like brothers and sisters who wind each other up but still show up and support one another. We've made it our goal to find our niche and be as different as possible to other local bands, putting our

www.mannermagazine.co.uk

own spin on old dance tracks and incorporating immersive elements to get the whole audience involved." ELSIE AND THE EMERALDS Realising a gap in the market for a smaller, more affordable band for more intimate events, Elsie and the Emeralds was born. The three-piece post-modern jazz trio is made up of Ruby Rouge members Elsie, Mia and Marcus. They cover a variety of popular songs and genres in their own jazzy style, catering for background music to a more upbeat and captivating performance and everything in between based on the audience and atmosphere. This band instantly took off with private dinner parties, cocktail hours, drinks receptions, christenings and birthday celebrations. Elsie and the Emeralds provide the same professional standard as Ruby Rouge but on a smaller, more affordable scale as they don't require the same large set-up making them the ideal choice for smaller gatherings.  You can catch Elsie and the Emeralds on the terrace at the Hotel Cristina during the summer months. To enquire about bookings for either Ruby Rouge or Elsie and the Emeralds, visit the website www.rubyrougemusic.com @elsieandtheemeralds @rubyrougemusic

Reverse the signs of ageing with Cutis Lift Available at Confidence Aesthetics, the Cutis Lift is an effective treatment for facial rejuvenation, smoothing stretch marks, brightening skin and reducing acne.

utis Lift combines RF with microneedling technology to stimulate collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid beneath the skin. The superfine gold-tipped needles target the deeper dermal layer, transforming cells to give tighter, smoother, and younger-looking

skin after one session. Goldtipped microneedles penetrate the skin tissue to deliver targeted RF energy at a controlled temperature to prevent thermal damage to epidermal tissue, stimulating the synthesis of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid to make the skin

fuller, smoother, tighter, and more hydrated. The combination of RF, microneedles, and suction in Cutis Lift means treatments are twice as effective and, unlike some other treatments, results typically last for between 6-9 months.

"It is especially effective at treating recurring acne." The RF-insulated needle acne pen is unique to Cutis Lift, and can treat all acne, comedones, pimples, suppuration, and nodules. It is especially effective at treating recurring acne and can be used on all areas, including the chest and back. Traditional treatments such as exfoliation, medication, LED light therapy or laser are focused on atrophic sebaceous glands but often only temporarily solve acne. With Cutis Lift, the acne pen destroys the root of the acne, ensuring no recurrence.

The unique cooling handle is used to reduce discomfort and swelling after treatment. This works by contracting blood vessels, tightening the capillaries, and greatly improving pore size. It strengthens collagen fibres, leaving skin plumper and more elastic, smoothing wrinkles and crow's feet, and works to reduce varicose veins, floating tendons, and venous reflux, purifying and detoxifying to improve desalination and the elimination of spots.

TREATMENT AREAS · Facial rejuvenation · Non-surgical facelift · Smoothen stretch marks · Brighten and lighten dull skin · Reduce acne and other scars · Reverses the signs of ageing At Confidence Aesthetic, Jersey's premium natural facial aesthetics practitioners specialise in providing this treatment and offer a free face-to-face consultation. A NOSTALGIC JOURNEY INTO '90S MAKEUP Reflecting on the iconic makeup trends that defined an era - bold lips, thin brows, and glitter galore.

T

he '90s marked an era of bold experimentation, characterised by vibrant colours, iconic styles, and a departure from the understated looks of previous decades. From grunge to glam, the '90s makeup scene was diverse and influential, leaving an indelible mark on the beauty industry. One of the most iconic aspects of '90s makeup was the emphasis

42

on bold lips. Deep, matte shades like brown, burgundy, and plum were the go-to choices, with celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Lopez and Winona Ryder championing the trend. Lip liners were often used to create sharp edges, giving the lips a defined and attentiongrabbing look. The eyes were a canvas for creativity in the '90s. The

www.mannermagazine.co.uk

grunge movement popularised smudged eyeliner and dark, moody eyeshadows. Smokey eyes became a staple, and metallic and glittery eyeshadows gained popularity, reflecting the era's fascination with all things bold and vibrant. The thin, arched eyebrows of the '90s, made famous by supermodels like Kate Moss, were a stark departure from the fuller brows of the '80s.

MAKEUP

"There has been a resurgence of '90s makeup trends, with modern adaptations." The minimalist approach to foundation and face makeup in the '90s was a stark contrast to the heavy contouring trends of today. A natural, matte finish was favoured, and the "no-makeup" makeup look gained traction. The emphasis shifted from heavy foundations to a focus on skincare and achieving a radiant complexion. Popularised by the likes of Gwen Stefani, face gems and rhinestones were often used to add a touch of glamour. The '90s makeup scene embraced selfexpression, allowing individuals to experiment with unique looks that reflected their personalities. In recent times, there has been

a resurgence of '90s makeup trends, with modern adaptations that blend nostalgia with contemporary aesthetics. Makeup enthusiasts are revisiting the grunge era's dark lips and smokey eyes, bringing a sense of rebellion and individualism to their beauty routines. As we delve into the world of '90s makeup, it becomes evident that this era's trends continue to

RECREATE THE LOOK

inspire and influence the beauty landscape, proving that the allure of the '90s is timeless in the everevolving world of cosmetics. 

CULTIVATE SELF-COMPASSION In the hustle of daily life, self-compassion can become an anchor for well-being. This simple practice fosters resilience and can enhance your overall well-being. TIP: Set aside a few minutes daily to reflect on your strengths and emotions. NAVIGATING THE NIGHT Q

Adjust environmental factors and establish a pre-sleep ritual to help improve the quality of your sleep.

uality sleep can become elusive in a fast-paced world where stress and demanding schedules often take precedence. Adequate sleep is crucial for overall well-being, influencing physical health, cognitive function, and emotional balance. Lack of proper sleep has been linked to various health issues, including

increased stress, impaired memory, and a weakened immune system. Several factors can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep. These factors include anxiety, irregular sleep schedules, and environmental factors such as noise and light pollution. Here are a few things you can do to help you have a restful sleep.

48

www.mannermagazine.co.uk

PRE-SLEEP RITUAL Establishing pre-sleep rituals, such as reading a book, gentle stretching or taking a warm bath will help you calm your mind and body ready for a restful sleep. Journalling is excellent for those who struggle to drift off, as it allows you to reflect on the day and think about positive things for the following day. Allow 30 to 45 minutes for your pre-sleep rituals.

WELLNESS

BEDROOM FACTORS Maintaining a cool bedroom environment, typically between 15-20 degrees Celsius, is generally more conducive to sleep, whilst good air circulation will contribute towards a more comfortable and pleasant sleep environment. The room should be dark to support the body's natural sleep-wake cycle, so use blackout curtains or blinds to block external light sources. COLOURED NOISE 2024 may be the year of coloured noise as more people continue to search the topic. Green noise was up 121% in Google searches last year and is expected to continue rising. Unlike white noise, which retains high frequencies, green noise amplifies the mid-range frequencies, similar to ocean waves.

AROMATHERAPY Consider using aromatherapy with relaxing scents like lavender, chamomile, or jasmine. You can use aromatherapy for sleep a few ways. An essential oil diffuser will disperse the aroma throughout the room, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of the oils without direct contact with the skin. Topical application includes diluting essential oils with a carrier oil (such as jojoba or sweet almond oil) and applying a small amount to pulse points, the wrists, or the bottoms of the feet. You can also create a homemade pillow mist by diluting essential oils with water and spraying it lightly on your pillow and bedding. SLEEP SUPPLEMENTS As a category, sleep supplements are having a moment. Last year,

www.mannermagazine.co.uk

Google saw a 31% increase in sleep supplements, with 'sleep gummies' increasing by 22%. The best-selling herbal and nutritional sleep supplements all contain melatonin, a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland in the brain, regulating the sleep-wake cycle. Dosage and timing are crucial, and starting with low doses is advisable to avoid potential side effects - although you should always consult a doctor before starting any new supplements. By paying close attention to environmental factors, and adjusting your sleep environment to your preferences, you can enhance the overall quality of your sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. 

Breakthrough Principles

EACH ONE OF US HAS A UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD & BODY Individuals possess a distinctive connection with food and their body, deserving honour, respect, and nurturing. Eating psychology and mind-body nutrition reject a one-size-fits-all approach, demanding acknowledgment of each persons unique metabolism, lifestyle, and personality. It prioritises viewing each person as biologically and emotionally unique, initiating tailored strategies rooted in individual metabolism for genuine effectiveness and results. FOOD IS A DOORWAY Challenges with food and body are often more intricate than perceived. Our relationship with food serves as a captivating gateway, beckoning us to explore deeper aspects of ourselves that demand attention. Recognising food as a gateway allows us to unearth the genuine causes behind eating concerns, paving the way for resolving these challenges effectively. OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD & BODY IS A GREAT TEACHER Our relationship with our body serves as an invaluable instructor, encouraging us to learn about ourselves through life's lessons. Dynamic Eating Psychology recognises that the goal isn't merely resolving eating challenges for an ideal body and weight. Exploring weight unveils lessons in diet quality, food allergies, self-love, acceptance, unprocessed trauma, and stress management. The challenges persist until we are prepared to learn the lessons. EVERY UNWANTED HEALTH OR EATING CONCERN HAS AN UNSEEN WISDOM & BRILLIANCE Behind every struggle with food and body lies a wisdom rooted in biology, genetics, neurochemistry, or psychology. Unravelling the reasoning behind each challenge allows us to release self-judgment and discern the appropriate healing strategy. For example, understanding that heartburn's unseen brilliance reveals its roots, urging us to address stress and make lifestyle adjustments.

IF YOU HAVE A CHALLENGING RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD OR BODY, THEN YOU’RE HERE TO HEAL IT! The wisdom embedded in our eating challenges is inescapable; there are no shortcuts. Healing becomes a fundamental purpose for those with food, weight, or body image challenges. Embracing life as a healing journey facilitates detachment from personalising food or weight challenges, prompting a deeper exploration and meaningful questioning. PERSONAL POWER = METABOLIC POWER This transformative principle asserts that as we enhance personal empowerment, our metabolic potential expands. Aligning personal development with nutritional focus accelerates profound change. Shifting attention from controlling food intake to authentic selfexpression fosters healing in challenges like overeating or emotional eating. This paradigm shift, where Personal Power equals Metabolic Power, offers a potent and effective approach to food and body concerns. FOOD IS A PROFOUND SYMBOLIC SUBSTITUTE "Symbolic substitute" encapsulates a captivating psychological phenomenon where, in the absence of desired fulfilment, the human psyche instinctively turns to the nearest approximation. Adopting this approach facilitates a gentler, more effective transformation of eating challenges by acknowledging their roots without judgment.

KICK START YOUR WEIGHT MANAGEMENT JOURNEY The Weight Management Clinic at Castle Quay Pharmacy is led by prescribing Pharmacist, Nima Rad. Nima shares information on the prescription-only injectable.

N

ima Rad first started practising as a Community Pharmacist almost 10 years ago after graduating from the University of Brighton. After moving from London to Jersey in 2019, he completed further University training to become a Prescribing Pharmacist, specialising in Type 2 Diabetes and

52

weight management. Since starting his weight management clinic in 2023, he has achieved promising results for his patients, along with great feedback. Patients of the weight management clinic receive a prescription-only medicine that mimics a chemical substance in the body. As well as other health benefits, it can reduce

www.mannermagazine.co.uk

appetite and delay gut motility, ultimately resulting in weight loss. The medicine is given as an injection that is administered once a week. “Patients are pleasantly surprised by how small the needle is, and for those who are anxious about using an injection, I offer them the opportunity to inject their first dose with me for support.”

WELLNESS

PATIENT FEEDBACK “The whole

appointment, Nima was polite and nonjudgemental, listened to me and answered all my questions.”

Nima provides a holistic programme for his patients that not only achieves weight loss but also focuses on maintaining their weight goals long term. Nima does this by implementing bespoke weight management plans tailored to each patient to ensure a healthy lifestyle; the goal being to sustain weight loss. "It is about being as healthy on the inside and outside, which I aim to address throughout the programme. It is not a quick fix; ideally, patients need to be patient, committed and willing to go the extra mile to get results." Nima works closely with various healthcare professionals and exercise providers to ensure patients have the appropriate nutritional support and can incorporate physical activity into their lives. “I recognise how difficult this journey may be for my patients; therefore, I make myself available by email or phone to offer support throughout their programme.” Nima likes to be proactive and present throughout every patient’s journey to provide as much support as possible. This, in turn, allows Nima to get to know his patients

and help them adopt healthier behaviours. “Habits can take a long time to adapt or change; I always recommend going slow to ensure greater success. The injection gives patients a kick start to achieve a healthier lifestyle.” Away from the Pharmacy, Nima is also a Thermomix advisor. The Thermomix is a kitchen appliance that helps make nutritious and fresh food or drink much more accessible to people. “From salads to soup or risottos to plant-based milks, the Thermomix can make these fresh at home, facilitating a more varied diet and a healthier lifestyle.” Nima has also recently ran the London marathon in 2023, in aid of NSPCC Jersey and is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for Dementia Jersey in February 2024. “I love setting myself fitness challenges as this motivates me to stay active. It’s all about finding what can keep you motivated.” To get in touch with Nima, email info@cqp.je Castle Quay Pharmacy Le Capelain House, La Rue De L'Etau, St Helier

“He listens, makes good suggestions and above all makes himself very available for any questions or support you may have or need. Any emails you send to him are always answered very quickly.” “Nima was very supportive and spent the time to listen and answer any questions that I had.” “He was happy to go through anything I didn't fully understand the first time.” “A really kind and compassionate gentleman.”

MELTING POT The 70s vibe of Melting Pot will take you on a journey full of flavours and sensations.

M

elting Pot, a 70s inspired Spritz Cocktail Bar, is the latest venture of husband-andwife duo, Brian and Stani Smith. The interior has taken inspiration from films such as Space Odyssey and Thunderbird futurism with bold, retro colours and prints. “We noticed the fashion of the 70s seemed to always be in style one way or another. I remember as a child in the 70s the colours going from incredibly bland and brown to psychedelic kaleidoscope madness with crazy patterns, and everything was creatively circular.” Having been playfully toying with a 70s concept mood board for 8-9 years, Brian says he only started taking the concept seriously in the last year. He worked closely with designer Paul Sawford who is an internationally experienced leisure and tourism

62

consultant, master planner and strategy designer with decades of expertise gained in hospitality, leisure and tourism. “We bounced ideas back and forth, and enjoyed putting the whole project together.” The drinks were a massive inspiration to the whole concept and without doubt the Spritz at the four-front. Products such as Drambuie, Aperol and 70s

style spritz cocktails are the very first offering on the menu. The selection is modern with a nod to 70s Nostalgia. Luke Loddo, the groups bar manager, has worked extremely hard building his creations such as the Pleasure Seka, Caught In The Rain, names inspired by 70s actresses and legendary 70s tunes. You can expect to hear some of the coolest tunes from the 70s but the vibe will be very much focused on Northern Soul and Motown which has been the inspiration to modern mixes you will find in dance genres of the now generation, such as Soulful House, Deep Nu-Disco, Funky House, Disco House.  Melting Pot 6 Caledonia Place, St Helier www.meltingpot.je

RED HOUSE

COFFEE BAR & PIZZERIA The hottest new place to grab a pizza has set tummies rumbling and tongues wagging.

R

ed House Coffee Bar & Pizzeria (previously Chordz) re-opened their doors a few weeks before Christmas. Named after a Jimi Hendrix song (as with the owner's other restaurant, Crosstown), Red House continue to serve up their well-loved locally roasted ‘Rock Roasters’ coffee from as early at 7.30am Monday to Saturday. The shelves are piled high with freshly baked pastries and the ever famous ‘mega-slab’ of banana bread, as well as a selection of freshly filled paninis, wraps, salad boxes and yogurt pots. But, the real showstoppers here are the authentic Neapolitan style pizzas which have been flying out of the stunning Izzo oven. With reviews raising the roof and causing quite a stir, many have claimed the pizzas are better than recent trips to Italy!

The best seller so far has been the 'Fat Tony', a tomato-based pepperoni, chorizo & nduja topped pizza smothered in satisfyingly stringy mozzarella and finished off with a few green bell peppers for that crunch - chefs kiss. The goat’s cheese & caramelised onion 'Hannahpadana' pizza and the burrata, nduja, hot honey & basil pizza, sweetly named after owner Charlie's daughter, 'Lil' Bill's Burrata' are undoubtedly the runners up in the top sellers! And dividing nations is the 'Krafty J's Special' which includes the controversial pineapple topping. Top tip with this one is to pair it with a can of 'Loco Juice' from neighbours over at craft beer & gin bar, Krafty J's. Speaking of beer & gin, another new instalment for Red House is their liquor license. Now you can settle in for

www.mannermagazine.co.uk

the evening, enjoy your pizzas alongside a bottle of red or try their own popular Red House IPA, as well as many other tipples from the bar. They even have a large alfresco seating area with heated awnings so you outdoorsy, peoplewatching folk can comfortably dine outside year-round. So, if you haven’t been yet, head to West Centre and follow your nose. The smell of these delicious and playfully named pizza’s will guide you to your table and you’ll be back for more, maybe even multiple times a week like most of their customers!  Walk ins are welcomed but you can also secure a table by phone and call to order your takeaway for collection 01534 735687. SPRING RECIPES BY CHRISTIAN GOTT

Leek & Blue Cheese Risotto The secret of a good risotto is stirring consistently to agitate the grains of rice. As they rub together, starch from the rice is mixed into the risotto base, giving the distinctive creamy texture. INGREDIENTS • 500g Leeks, washed, trimmed, and sliced • 300g Arborio Risotto Rice • 2 sticks of Celery, washed and finely diced • 1 Onion, peeled and very finely diced • 175ml White Wine • 50g Butter • 50g Blue Cheese • 25g freshly grated Parmesan • 2 tbsp good Olive Oil • 175ml white wine • 2 quality Vegetable Stock Cubes • Sea Salt and freshly ground Pepper

64

METHOD 1. Boil a kettle and prepare one litre of vegetable stock. Heat the oil and half the butter in a heavy-bottomed frying pan, and gently cook the leeks and celery. 2. Add the rice and stir thoroughly to coat the rice in the oil and butter. Turn up the heat, pour in the wine, season, and cook for a few minutes, stirring constantly. 3. Add a ladleful of the stock and stir until completely absorbed. Repeat the process until all stock is absorbed and the rice in your risotto is al dente. If you need to add more liquid, add some freshly boiled water. 4. Remove from the heat and beat in the remaining ingredients. Check seasoning and serve.

RECIPES

White Bean & Kale Soup This soup is suitable for vegans. The trick to the creamy finish is blending some of the beans to give a smooth, silky texture. INGREDIENTS • 2 x 400g Butter Beans, rinsed and drained • 150g Kale, washed, trimmed and chopped • 1 large White Onion, peeled and finely chopped • 1 large Carrot, peeled and cut into small cubes • 2 sticks of Celery, washed and thinly sliced • 2 cloves of Garlic, peeled and crushed • Juice of half a Lemon • ½ tsp dried Chilli Flakes • ½ tsp dried Thyme • 1 quality Vegetable Stock Cube • Sea Salt and freshly ground Pepper

METHOD 1. Boil a kettle and prepare 500ml of vegetable stock. Heat the oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pan, add the onion, carrots, and celery and gently cook until soft. 2. Add the garlic, chilli, and thyme and cook for another couple of minutes, stirring continuously, then add the beans and stock. Bring to the boil. 3. Carefully ladle half of the soup and beans into a food processor, squeeze in the lemon juice, secure the lid and puree. When smooth, pour this back into the pan with the remaining soup. 4. Bring back to the boil and turn down to a gentle simmer. Season generously and add the kale. Simmer for three to four minutes until the kale is wilted but still bright green. Check the seasoning and serve with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
