And much more!

Message from the Editor To the youth who march onward an upward, as Alpha men, we must continue to stand at the forefront in our community. We must remain steadfast in our lofty aims of being “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All.” For 105 years, the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha have been pioneers in the community all over the world. It is an honor to be apart of a brotherhood that has a strong history, and may this newsletter serve as a medium to highlight our chapter. As I have matriculated into the Alumni chapter, I have realized the need for the younger brothers of Alpha to continue to take

leadership roles within the Fraternity. As the older brothers are more than eager to mentor, guide and support us to take on more responsibilities. I urge all brothers to continue to be your brothers keeper, encourage inactive brothers to come back into the House of Alpha and carry the torch of excellence in all facets of life. I want to thank the “Manly Deeds” chapter newsletter committee for your hard work in helping to put this edition together: Bro. Gregory Diggs, Bro. Demond Harper, Bro. Adrian Green and Bro. Andre Brooks. Brothers, I hope you enjoy the

Winter Edition, as it serves as the chapter voice highlighting just a portion of the inner workings of our fraternal order. I look forward to presenting the Spring 2012 edition next year! Fraternally, Bro. Aaron R. Green, Editor

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ALPHA PHI ALPHA

The founders of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. were no ordinary achievers. Given racial attitudes in 1906, their accomplishments were monumental. As founder Henry Arthur Callis euphemistically stated—because the half-dozen African American students at Cornell University during the school year 1904-05 did not return to campus the following year, the incoming students in 1905-06, in founding Alpha Phi Alpha, were determined to bind themselves together to ensure that each would survive in the racially hostile environment. In coming together with this simple act, they preceded by decades the emergence of such on -campus programs as affirmative action, upward bound and remedial assistance. The students set outstanding examples of scholarship, leadership and success--preceding the efforts even of the NAACP and similar civil rights organizations. Alpha Phi Alpha (ΑΦΑ) is the first intercollegiate fraternity established by AfricanAmericans. Founded on December 4, 1906, on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Alpha Phi Alpha has initiated over 175,000 men into the organization and has been open to men of all races since 1940. Our fraternity utilizes motifs and artifacts from Ancient Egypt to represent the organization. The founders, Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy, are collectively known as the "Seven Jewels". The fraternity expanded when a second chapter was chartered at Howard University in 1907. Beginning in 1908, Alpha Phi Alpha became the prototype for other Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLO). Today, there are over 680 active Alpha chapters in the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia, the West Indies, and the Virgin Islands. The Delta Psi Lambda Chapter is the 211th House of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. chartered in 1949 by 11 men: Harold Brown, Harry Rahming, Gilbert Alexander*, Earl West*, Judson Hart*, Oglesivie (Sonny) Lawson*, C. Lester Nelson*, Paul J. Oliver*, Wendell A. Peters*, Gilbert Cruter* and Elvin R. Caldwell. (*Deceased) Since 1949, the brothers of the Delta Psi Lambda chapter have continued to hold high the name of Alpha while providing service and advocacy to our community.

December 1, 2011, My Good Brothers of the 211th House of Alpha, It is an honor and pleasure to greet you and share my vision for the Western Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. I first want to thank the District Director, your chapter brother, and my good friend, Brother Dr. Jeriod Patterson for his extraordinary leadership in the great Rocky Mountain District. To my good Brother Leroy Colbert, Chapter President, and to all the officers and members of Delta Psi Lambda chapter, I bid you greetings! Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated expanded and established fifteen (15) chapters in 1949 of which Delta Psi Lambda was among this list established in Denver, Colorado. For over sixty-two years, I am proud to have Delta Psi Lambda Chapter as a chapter that has sustained over six decades in its service and commitment to the greater Denver area through its scholarship and community service. Brothers, today, we stand as a proud region. We have demonstrated our ability to lead from the front. I am excited about the vision, direction, and impact the Western Region has had on the region and the overall fraternity. From day one, the goal was to move the region from a deficit position to a surplus balance. This was achieved in less than 18 months. The vision was established from expecting a foundation of excellence by chapters and brothers understanding the importance of leading from the front. Additionally, it was important to lead in a way that connected new members to the organization and not just their chapter. To that end, the vision of mandating all new members to attend their first regional convention where a special "Pinning Ceremony" is conducted has received great reviews and results. Brothers are pinned with a special pin and presented before the entire brotherhood at the regional convention. Subsequently, other regions have implemented this process of which the Western Region is the precursor. We have removed the smaller one-day leadership team convening and replaced it with a leadership academy weekend mode designed to develop and provide our leadership Founders Henry A. Callis

with tools to be better leaders. Each of the past Leadership Weekends achieved record numbers of brothers attending. We have mandated college advisors to go through certification to serve the college brothers. We know for a fact that where there are active and engaged college advisors one would find strong, vibrant college chapters. We elevated the vision to capture the essence of outreach to African-American young men. We established a 501(C)(3), Leading For Tomorrow Foundation, designed to address issues facing African-American youth. Hence our focus on "Saving Black Boys." The vision for the Western Region is simple – to build our fraternal infrastructure and to equip our leaders and chapters with the essential tools required to lead from the front. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. does not accept mediocrity. We demand excellence. The Western Region Leadership Team of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated applauds the great impact Delta Psi Lambda Chapter has made externally and internally within our illustrious fraternity. As such, we look forward to the Rocky Mountain District as host of our 65th Western Region Convention in FY 2013. I am confident the brothers are preparing to host an outstanding convention which will serve as my last regional convention as your Western Region Vice President. I am excited to spend that time with my brothers in the Rocky Mountain District. I am grateful to each of you for your commitment and sponsorship to our youth and tomorrow’s adults. I thank each of you for your support of our great fraternity and look forward to seeing you soon at your District Conference. MANLY DEEDS

Message from the Rocky Mountain District Director “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Develops Leaders, Promotes Brotherhood and Academic Excellence, While Providing Service and Advocacy For Our Communities.” Without a doubt, our mission statement succinctly identifies what Manly Deeds means to our Fraternity. Our mission statement guides the actions of the Fraternity, spell out its overall goal, provide a path, and guides decision-making. It provides the necessary framework or context within which the Fraternity's strategies are formulated. Manly Deeds and our mission statement are thus synonymous! As we discuss what Manly Deeds means to a member of our Fraternity, our discussion should be directly linked to our mission statement. If first of all, servants of all, we should transcend all, is our motto, Manly Deeds should be our founding principles for our motto.

“Today, the need for African American male role models in the lives of children of color is paramount.”

We now need to discuss how Manly Deeds are implemented within the confines of our Fraternity. Alpha men implement Manly Deeds via our National Partnerships and National programs. In the framework of the Fraternity, we are challenged to support all National Partnerships and National Programs. Clearly, supporting our National Partnerships with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and March of Dimes constitutes Manly Deeds. How can a man of distinction not support these National Partnerships and still consider himself to be doing Manly Deeds? Today, the need for African-American male role models in the lives of children of color is paramount. We can no longer look to others to lead in this effort as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. needs to set the example for others to follow. For the March of Dimes, we all know that when we donate money and walk in March for Babies, we give hope to the more than half a million babies born too soon each year. Conducting our National Programs such as, Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College, Project Alpha, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, and Brother’s Keeper, we further define how Alpha men implement Manly Deeds. We believe so strongly in this concept that all chapters are requested to carry out these programs on a yearly basis. Intellectually, we understand that working with youth, helping people in the voting process, and being a supportive arm for senior Alphas has a direct tie to Manly Deeds. Personally, Manly Deeds means to me that as we climb to the top in our efforts to stimulate the ambition of our members; to prepare them for the greatest usefulness in the cause of humanity, freedom, and dignity of the individual; to encourage the highest and noblest form of manhood; and to aid downtrodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic, and intellectual status that we never tear each other down. Much Fraternal Love! Brother Dr. Jeriod D. Patterson Rocky Mountain District Director

Message from the Rocky Mountain District Area Director Focusing on Manly Deeds and the Future Has manly deeds in the house of Alpha become a meaningless tradition void of power and character? I believe that the Jewels felt it was their mission to fuel personal and societal transformations. We must remember that the Jewels grew up in an era where oppression and societal mores were extremely hostile toward people of color. Their courage and foresight were necessary in order to remedy the societal ills of their time. When most people think of manly deeds, they conceptualize the term as a verb, an action being taken. How do you describe an action, by its outcome? By the people it affects? Alternatively, do you just look for words that vividly describe your deeds so that others can see you as a good person? The Bible makes it clear that we should not put our faith in man. Man is not always trustworthy; we have seen this throughout history. Ever since sin came into the world through Satan, man has become evil, thoughtless, and selfish. The Jewels knew this and wanted to create a spirit that did not just encapsulate our beloved fraternity, but would encourage others to step up and make their lives better through love, education, and manly deeds. We must do the same. Personally, and in our fraternal lives, we are energized by the effort of trying to understand and interpret change. We are stimulated by the debates about what is really happening right now and why. We are challenged to make our own contribution toward the brotherhood that adheres to the tenets of the Jewels, and yet, still deal with the issues of these times, all the while trying to gain a better understanding of where the future may lead us. Brothers, a lack of value and commitment has slipped into the ground water of our fraternity. If this fraternity is to have a future, we need to continue to follow the examples set forth by our Jewels. We must make sacrifices in our lives daily, with our time, energy, or resources in order to continue to be successful. This premise does not only apply to the work we do inside of the house of Alpha, but it must also be applied outside the house as well. For example, we could pass on our knowledge and experience by mentoring or we could volunteer to tutor our young men who need us now more than ever. We should always remember that our fraternal lineage is one of great deeds and firsts. First of all...Servants of all...We shall transcend all. Fraternally, Brother Elton Kirkwood Jr. Rocky Mountain District Area Director

The Belief of Brotherhood, from the Chapter President My belief of brotherhood is that it is a group of men, dedicated to enriching the lives of people in the communities in which they reside. After completing the requirements to become a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., hereafter referred to as Alpha, a brother enters The House of Alpha. Visualize with me if you will my mental, but real life results, analogy of brotherhood. Brothers are greeted in the Grand Seven Jewels Rotunda. The phrases Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love For All Mankind are inscribed around the top edge of the Seven Jewels Rotunda. Project Alpha, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, Brothers Keepers, and Go to High School Go to College are just a few of the portals describing Alpha’s service to mankind. Individual commitment to portals services and “The Pack” which I call band of brothers, begins in the Grand Seven Jewels Rotunda. Commitment creates Brotherhood!

“Commitment creates Brotherhood.”

There is a portal inscribed with Local Chapter. I call this the development of leaders committed to providing service to our communities. In addition to the portals above, other portals branch from the chapter portal. They may be scholarship fundraisers, holiday basket giveaways, student recognition, and Alpha Party Time to name a few. Commitment to chapter services creates and maintains a high level Brotherhood! Brotherhood shares inspirational nuggets of teamwork, pride, self respect, and so on as one voice from the chapter to the community. This is BROTHERHOOD! There is a portal labeled Other Attractions. This is the portal that attracts brothers when commitment fades. Commitment may fade for many reasons, but it should be noted that there is not an escape from any portal. All portals lead back to the Grand Seven Jewel Rotunda. Committed brothers that enter into the portal of Other Attractions to reclaim brothers whose commitments have faded restore BROTHERHOOD! Finally, BROTHERHOOD sustains the legacy represented in the Grand Seven Jewel Rotunda. Paraphrasing words from our Western Region Chaplain “don’t be bitter, be better.” How can I, we be better? Well fill in the missing parts: “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs…”, or “I am the master of my fate, I am the …” or “In our Dear A Phi A fraternal spirit binds…”. That is BROTHERHOOD! I submit to you my brothers that because of BROTHERHOOD we have been, we are, and shall ever be, ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC.

Behavioral Strategies from the Immediate-Past President The Delta Psi Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated continues to be a vibrant chapter, poised to become a shining example of how cross-generational differences can be cultivated in making our chapter a learning organization. Most differences can easily cause strife if allowed. Different values, ideas, work ethics, and attitudes toward authority if ignored, can stifle the progress of a chapter and lead to intergenerational conflict. Fortunately, our chapter recognizes the contribution and value each member brings to our chapter. For this reason, the senior Brothers in our chapter make a sincere effort to encourage younger Brothers to assume leadership positions. While the leadership style and approach to business operations of younger Brothers may be perceived as vastly different from leaders of the past, it sets the course for the exchange of skills and collective learning on multiple levels. Therefore, it becomes instrumental for our chapter to approach generational differences with interest, not fear or negativity. In addition to understanding the value of differences, is that we all learn from them. Through learning from one another, we become aware of how our assumptions can influence our interactions and learn to empathize with our leader’s situation, needs, and values. With consideration to generational differences, our chapter will only be as strong as the bond that exists among its members. So it is pertinent that everyone is sensitive to generational differences, and adopts behavioral strategies to ensure the success of our chapter for generations to come.

The following behavioral strategies will help to maintain and continue to cultivate this bond: Be flexible as to the means of your communication (face-to-face, email, etc.) Avoid generational jargon. Speak in plain terms and avoid idioms that are not widely understood. Be attentive. Look for signs that you may be misunderstanding each other, whether it is a confused look, an unclear response, or an unintended reaction. Practice active listening. Turn up your listening dial across generational differences. Listen for clear expressions of different values or outlooks than you have. Seek to understand the individual better by listening carefully to what they say (or don't say). Show Respect. Most generations have felt they don't get the respect they deserve. Using the strategies above, you can show that you do respect them, their background, and their outlook on life—and build powerful relationships as a result.

Message from the Iota Omicron Lambda Chapter President Greetings from the 515th House of Alpha! The Brothers of Iota Omicron Lambda have been extremely busy as of late. We have just finished up our primary fundraiser of working concessions at the Air Force Academy football games. The chapter has been working at the Academy for more than 20 years. Working these long and grueling games provides scholarships for well-deserving high school seniors. We would like to thank the Brothers of Delta Psi Lambda for supporting us at one of the games this year. It was fellowship and hard work all at the same time!

“As we remember our founding Jewels, we shall also remember our Brothers who have also gone on to that chapter of sweet rest, Omega Chapter.”

The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are sometimes a source of stress for some in our community. The Brothers of IOL have been canvassing the community to find families in need, and be a source of inspiration and help. We are involved with giving away Thanksgiving Baskets, as well as Christmas Gift Cards. In addition the chapter plays a very active role in partnering with Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church’s Prison Ministry Angel Tree Project. This endeavor reaches out to children of inmates and their families with the love of Christ. By connecting incarcerated parents with their children through the delivery of gifts at Christmas, children’s lives are brightened beyond measure! We are looking forward to a very successful Founders Day ceremony this year as we host in Colorado Springs. Committees from IOL and DPL have been working tirelessly to pull together this combined event. We want to celebrate the 105th Anniversary of this illustrious fraternity with class and style. As we remember our founding Jewels, we shall also remember our Brothers who have also gone on to that chapter of sweet rest, Omega Chapter. We are also excited to still maintain relationships with our chapter Widows. Where we are, they shall also be… The Martin Luther King, Jr Memorial Dedication is still fresh in the minds of many. We will continue to celebrate by participating with the Brothers of Delta Psi Lambda and Alphas from all over in the Denver Marade for the MLK Holiday in 2012. This is simply a glimpse of the full slate of activities the Brothers of Iota Omicron Lambda are involved in as we complete our National Programs and more. We need to ensure that we remain relevant in the Colorado Springs community, and move from mere contact to great impact. One additional, very important point is that we really need to make a concerted effort to take care of each other! Let us not forget to be our Brother’s Keeper. Over 40 years of excellence continues…

Why Do I Want to be General President? My brothers of the Delta Psi Lambda chapter, I am deeply humbled and honored to be one of the finalists placed on the official ballot to become General President. This is a title I do not take for granted. Little did I know that my back story would lead me on this journey to lead you. In September of 1985, I attended a smoker for Beta Phi chapter at Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. The keynote address was delivered by the late Brother Michael Price, Editor-in-Chief of the Sphinx. Brother Price articulated this charge, “Ask not what Alpha Phi Alpha can do for you? Ask what you can do for Alpha Phi Alpha?” When Brother Price made the statement, I was unsure how to apply my young skills to the organization when I was a nineteen year-old aspiring to membership. When I became a member, I soon realized from mentors that my leadership and my commitment to Alpha Phi Alpha was evident and being cultivated. Now twenty-six years later, Brother Price’s directive remains with me as I continue to demonstrate my allegiance to the oath that I took at initiation. I want to be our 34th General President because I believe in the mission of Alpha Phi Alpha. I believe in the progress of our members to further a fraternal spirit and investment. I have been a tireless advocate for the fraternity. I have confronted challenges that tested my convictions while maintaining my respect for our members and chapters. And I believe that my skills as a leader, at all levels of this fraternity, have prepared me for this distinguished position. My platform is designed to reverse the perception that Alpha Phi Alpha has hit a plateau amongst brothers who have disconnected themselves from our mission and to inspire trust with brothers to inspire a generation of new leaders. I have outlined strategies from protecting our brand, through the continuing support of our college brothers, to reinforcing our civic duty. You can review the details of my platform on my website at www.thealphainvestment.org. I am a product of Alpha Phi Alpha’s first tenant of its mission statement, “to Develop Leaders.” I faithfully followed nine men who asked me to invest in their visionary direction for our fraternity. Now I am asking you to follow my vision and direction to build upon the successes of their leadership and reverse a trend where Alpha Phi Alpha loses approximately 75% of newly initiated members within the first five years of their initiation. For more than two decades, I have remained passionate for Alpha Phi Alpha. I remain dedicated to service to improve our communities. I have been inspired to lead on several occasions and I have inspired others to trust in my leadership with my unwavering focus. I have a vision and a belief on what Alpha Phi Alpha’s next General President will confront. I have been entrusted with some of Alpha Phi Alpha’s most respected positions. I ask members from Delta Psi Lambda and throughout our fraternity, for your trust in my leadership, your support to lead us forward, and your vote when you receive your ballot in April of 2012. Invest in my direction as we invest together in Alpha Phi Alpha. Thank You! - Brother Mark S. Tillman, Candidate for 34th General President

Denver Alpha Brothers Raise Money for Dr. King Memorial After more than two decades of planning, fund-raising and construction, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial has officially opened to the public. According to Fraternity historian Brother Robert Harris, the idea for the monument started 28 years ago when Brother George Sealey and his wife, sitting at their kitchen table, said there should be a tribute to King in Washington. He then brought together four other Alpha men in his local chapter, and from there the idea became a national mission of the fraternity. After years of producing fiscal and fundraising plans, drawings and blueprints and galvanizing public support, Alpha Phi Alpha persuaded Congress and key elements of the executive branch, including the Department of the Interior and the White House, to green light the project. The brothers in Denver quickly jumped on board with this national mission realizing how important it was and what it would mean for our country. Throughout the years the By Brother Stephan Gater gentlemen of the Delta Psi Lambda contributed to the cause both individually as well as collectively through events such as the MLK Memorial Fundraiser with the Denver Nuggets raising over $5,000 towards this cause. This year, the Delta Psi Lambda chapter held a special fundraiser as a final push before the dedication. The chapter realized that the vision of a memorial in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. was one that captured the essence of his message, a message in which he so eloquently affirmed the commanding tenants of the American Dream - Freedom, Democracy and Opportunity for All; a noble quest that gained him the Nobel Peace Prize and one that continues to influence people and societies throughout the world. Upon reflection, we were reminded that Dr. King's lifelong dedication to the idea of achieving human dignity through global relationships of well being, has served to instill a broader and deeper sense of duty within each of us - a duty to be both responsible citizens and conscientious stewards of freedom and democracy. As a chapter we invited community leaders’ guest and fellow Greeks to come out and do their part as we honored the dream of our Brother Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. One of the highlights of the evening was the virtual tour of the monument that guest were able to view. The evening was filled with excitement as guest socialized and enjoyed refreshments in the Curtis Ballroom at Comedy Works South in Greenwood Village, CO The MLK Monument is currently right on the National Mall in D.C. This was one of the few historical milestones that we were able to witness in our lifetime.

Alpha Men Takeover Washington, DC. To Unveil MLK Monument “On a hot summer day in late August of this year, many hundreds of Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. from all around the globe made a journey to the capital city of Washington, DC. The purpose of this journey was to spend a festive and early weekend from Thursday, August 25th through Sunday, August 28th for the celebration, unveiling and dedication of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the Washington, DC National Mall, scheduled for this specific Sunday as it marked the 48th anniversary of Dr. King’s “I Had a Dream” speech. The National Headquarters of the Fraternity had made numerous and enormous plans for the Brotherhood and their guests to enjoy themselves during this special occasion in honor of our late brother Dr. King. However, Mother Nature had something different in mind. The week before this journey there was an earthquake in DC and during the last two days of this scheduled journey, a Class 4 Hurricane was in the forecast.

By Brother Art Wilson (pictured with his son Brother Andre Wilson) As a result of these natural disasters there were changes in the original plans and some of the events were cancelled or postponed. In spite of these changes, there were still some good times had - specifically on that Friday, August 26 such as 1) a private dedication for the Brothers to attend on Friday morning, whereby Brothers received an MLK Commemorative Hat, MLK Commemorative Tie, and MLK Commemorative Handkerchief, 2) a private MLK Dedication Luncheon for the Brothers of Alpha; 3) the Women Who Dare To Dream Luncheon for the ladies, and 4) the Constitution Hall Black Tails Formal. On Saturday, August 27, the National Prayer Service at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception would be the final official event of the Dedication weekend. The official Dedication ceremony scheduled for Sunday, August 28th was cancelled and held on October 16th. Needless to say this Dedication weekend was extremely historic for the Fraternity and in my opinion there were several mishaps that prevented a flawless process of events, i.e. registration was a fiasco with over two hours of waiting in one long line, not everyone received their MLK Commemorative Hat, Commemorative Tie or Commemorative Handkerchief, and it came across as if the National Office of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was not prepared or organized for such a historic event. However I can truly say the positives exceeded the negatives and I would do it all over again.

My reasons for becoming an Alpha Man By Brother Harry T. Waters, Sr. Life member 1502

MANLY DEEDS cities were not open to minority organizations. Meetings were held in local churches and delegates lived in the homes of persons wanting to be apart of the historical growth of an up and coming organization. My parents had agreed to keep several delegates, …….besides my older sister was dating an Alpha member from the university. I remember seeing several of the very welldressed Alpha brothers coming down the newly paved Oklahoma Street. I was impressed, and after listening to them talk about the 41 Negro College Presidents, and their emphasis on Scholarship, I was determined, then, to become an Alpha Man. This General Convention, by the way, was the beginning of the elimination of “Hazing”, which was a standard practice in most fraternal organizations. I had a very thin frame and knew that I didn't want the beatings that were so prevalent at that time.

an endowed fund that could be used to support college scholarships. The plan was to create fundraisers and encourage financial contributions towards the goal of having $100,000 for the fund. Interest generated by the fund would be used for the scholarships. Led by Brothers like George E. Hailey, this goal has long been accomplished. Indeed, the fund is now endowed with $200,000 and we are working towards raising another $100,000. The support of DPL Brothers and the Denver Community has been outstanding over the years.

The funds are raised and disbursed by the George E. Hailey (GEH) Scholarship Foundation, which is a separate, nonprofit organization. The Thomas W. Bean Foundation has been a principal supporter of the Scholarships along with several important contributions from Brothers and the families of other Brothers who have passed away. The Delta Psi Lambda Chapter has also started a new tradition: The White Linen Affair. The support comes in the form of a scholarship ($2,000 or $1,000) that can be used as the student pursues their goals in higher education. Students apply for the scholarship, have their academic records, school-based service, and community-based service evaluated. Those who make it through the review are interviewed by the Scholarship Committee and other Brothers in the Chapter. Traditionally, between 5 and 7 awards are given annually.

On May 6, 2011, 5 young men were honored as their scholarship was celebrated at the Recognition Banquet. The event was held at the University of Denver and the Keynote Speaker was Dr. Nate Easely who serves both as the Deputy Director of the Denver Scholarship Foundation and Chair of the Denver Public School Board. The 2011 recipients of the awards included Mr. Paul Deadrick; Mr. Chidiebere Agwu; Mr. Jeffrey Smith; Mr. Sergio King; and Mr. William Carter. Ice Cold Alpha’s in the Windy City, 105th General Convention It was July 2011 that the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. assembled in the city of

Chicago for their 105th General Convention. It’s always good to attend this event and I have personally looked forward to it as we travel from city to city to conduct the business of Alpha. There was high powered entertainment provided by such great talents as Jennifer Hudson, Envogue (…the ladies still looking good and got the pipes to match), and Denver’s own Gerald Albright. The business sessions were as invigorating as ever. Key issues discussed were (what seem like ever present) the consequences of illegal intake procedures (hazing), the financial standing of the fraternity, the upcoming election and the IMDP. As one could expect, we did not solve all of the problems within the organization. However, I have always found it inspiring and invigorating to be in the house during the convention and watching the interchange, and exchange between brothers as we all strive to maintain our legacy and uphold the high standards that we’ve come to know and love so well. One notable aspect at the convention was that we were in a city that has s strong union force. The impact of this on the convention was that our sound and audio of business sessions was manned by individuals that were not members of our organization. This resulted in an insecure house for the whole of the convention. This required adjustments on our part in that discussions/concerns of a sensitive nature had to be handled with a different type of discretion. All in all, the coming together of brothers, renewed relations, the making of new ones and just being involved in the ongoing of the fraternity make one look forward to the 106th. I say to any brother that has not attended a convention, make an effort to do so. It’s an experience that every brother should live. Fraternally. Brother Purvis “Link” Young DPL Chapter, Chaplain

Radical Equations: The DPL Math Tutorial Program By Dr. Gregory A. Diggs

of fields including: education, engineering, banking, law and a variety of other disciplines. The diversity in background and expertise allows students to experience math from a variety of perspectives and to get a sense of some of the practical applications of math. We also believe that being exposed to African American men who are interested and competent in math, provides students with role models that can enhance their engagement in math and other academic pursuits. The students who are in the program this year are very excited and engaged in the math activities. A few of the students are advanced in mathematics. A few students have some struggles in math. Most of them are bright, engaged and have knowledge and abilities that are at or above grade level. One challenge has been that some of their knowledge is not as secure as it could be. They can complete the math problems, but do not necessarily understand the meanings and applications in different contexts. We are fortunate to have Brother Pigues and Brother Thompson who are able to identify gaps in knowledge and provide instruction that can more deeply support student learning.

Many active Brothers will know that the Delta Psi Lambda Chapter Student Engagement and Fun of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has a vibrant, active math tutoring program. We traditionally adopt an elementary school, gather a cadre of Brothers, and provide this service to approximately 10 young, African American males who are in the third or fourth grades. For the past few years, the math program has been implemented at Hallett Elementary School, which is located on Jasmine Street near northeast Denver.

What Brothers may not know, is that the tutorial program has a long history. As the story has been told, the tutorial program was started between 30 and 35 years ago under the guidance of Brother William (Bill) Guidry. Some of the people who are currently involved, including Brother Sam Pigues and Brother Robert (“Tree Bob”) Williams have been guiding and supporting this effort since way back in the day. According to Brother Pigues, “A lot of us who were young Brothers would come out and support the tutorial program. And we would go out for chicken wings and libations after the activity was completed”. The combination of service, food and other fun was a popular draw for Brothers in the heyday of Delta Psi Lambda Chapter. Today, that tradition continues. Led by Brother Buford Thompson, we have about 8 Brothers who actively support an average of 12 students each week. Brother Pigues and Brother Williams are almost always present. And sometimes we still go out for chicken wings.

The Program Once a week, Brothers meet at Hallett Academy to work with the 15 students who are enrolled in the program. The activities start at 5:30pm on Wednesday afternoon and generally last until 7pm. Most often, the math activities are centered around completing math homework that has been assigned by the school for that week, answering questions about math, providing some targeted math instruction and later, playing math games with the students. The participation of Brothers is one of the important reasons for the success of this program. They bring their expertise in a variety

Langston (“North”) Shupe-Diggs is the son of Brother Diggs and is an advanced math student as a 7th grader. He joined the Brothers last year as a math tutor and enjoys it. The students are responsive to him because, unlike us older Brothers, he has learned the same math that our participants have; he can explain it and support learning with a different lens. According to North: “The students have fun with math and I have fun. Overall, the math tutoring is a good experience for everyone.” North’s comments describe part of our goal. We need to have more African American students who are prepared to demonstrate excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) along with banking, business, accounting, economics and many other fields that use math as a foundation for scholarship and service. This is a radical proposition: to challenge stereotypes about Blacks and math by encouraging competence and enjoyment of mathematics among African American males. We hope you will agree, that programs like the math tutoring at DPL is one small step towards supporting these aims. And we invite you to join us as we continue to support these students.

Go To High School Go To College: National Program The Delta Psi Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity hosted Go to High School go To College, administered locally as the Young Men of Alpha. The brothers held meetings with the young men on every second Saturday of the month at the Denver University campus. The program was co-chaired and facilitated by brothers Claude Harris and Demond Harper. We met with the young men over the course of 9 weeks. Each week we highlighted a different subject that would assist in the development of the young men. We opened the year with the presentation of “Bring your A game”. Subjects covered over the rest of the program were African American history, conflict resolution, FAFSA informational, etiquette training, and assertive communication. We were able to work with Delta Sigma Theta’s local Delta Gem program on a Christmas toy drive and holiday luncheon. We had a good group of young men that we hope to continue with next school year. The program was supported by the Omicron Tau chapter on more than one occasion.

We showed the youth the Project Alpha video then held a series of activities and discussions that encouraged participation and In closing we are looking to grow the program and coninput from the youth. We covered a lot of topics and centered a tinue to assist in the development of male youths in our lot of the lessons around the responsibilities of the male in communities. Alpha’s take 1st Place in Local Step Show On Saturday, September 24, 2011 9 distinguished brothers hit the stage at the Delta Sigma Theta "Step It Up In the Mile High" step show. The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha spent tireless hours since July to perfect, polish, and perform at a level satisfactory to clench a victory. The team (comprised of neophytes, first time steppers, and veterans) put on a ten-minute show full of excitement, precision, and difficult routines that brought the audience back to the days of the 90's. Memorable characters from movies and television were highlighted throughout the show tied in with the sounds and dance moves of that decade. From start to finish those Ice Cold Brothers, decked in blue jeans, black blazers, gold ties and snap back hats, left it all on that stage and all the hard work, dedication and sacrifice paid off! Alpha Phi Alpha took home the first place prize and bragging rights for the year. Fraternally, Brother Adrian M. Green

Fraternity Hosts Holiday Toy Drive The Distinguished Brothers of the Delta Psi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. hosted a Holiday Toy Drive in the month of December. We identified a group that is in need of extra support during this holiday season. Since 1996, The Rocky Mountain Youth Clinics has provided medical, dental, and mental health services to the children of Colorado regardless of their insurance status or family’s ability to pay. As a chapter, it is our goal to provide holiday toy's to the children at the Rocky Mountain Youth Clinic. They have a true need during the holiday season, and under the leadership of Brother Devon Miller, the brothers of Alpha took charge and collected toys and cash donations from local community leaders and organizations. We are truly thankful to everyone that supported this great cause, and look forward to hosting more drives in the future that impact the youth in our community.
