Following a sold-out EP launch at the O2 Academy, Baron Von Alias, MistaBreeze & Eliza Lawson AKA Big Beat Bronson prepare to bring their unique brand of hip-hop dress-up to The Little Room into the wee hours of Split Parade. Earlier this year Big Beat Bronson was officially launched into the stratosphere. Members Baron Von Alias and MistaBreeze had been working together for over a year already, receiving a lot of attention in 2011 when they were voted the best act at the Evolution Festival, which led to them being asked to play a slot on the BBC Introducing stage at Radio One’s Big Weekend. When Eliza Lawson collaborated on the tracks Overload and Action Man, as well as becoming a regular fixture in the live show, it made sense to formalize the trio under a new name. BBB, who are often likened to the Beastie Boys, released their debut E.P, May Contain Nuts, on 6th August, which they officially launched at a sell out show at Newcastle’s O2 Academy on 18th. According to the Baron, recording MCN “was really easy because we have all known each other for a long time and have a really good rapport so it all just came together.” MistaBreeze added “I think there is definitely a sound that is recognizable as BBB. We are always evolving and trying new things out and our producer really managed to take what we do best as individuals and put it all together in a way that splits genres and keeps us from being pigeon holed.”

BBB,” remarks Eliza. “I actually think there are people in the scene here that don’t like us to be classed in the same ‘hip hop’ genre as them due to the fact that what we do is largely comedic, uses a broad spectrum of musical influences and has a more commercially appealing sound; we aren’t ‘underground’ enough.” “We are taking it to the next level with music videos, promotion, gigs, production, quality of the music and the amount of work that goes into it,” adds MistaBreeze. “This isn’t a hobby, it’s our job.” BBB weren’t giving much away with regards to we should expect at Split, but promised “much like all of our shows, we like to keep it fresh. There have been some ideas but we can’t tell you anything...It would just spoil it!”

Big Beat Bronson will join a host of other North East acts at this year’s Split Parade on September 15th. In Eliza’s words; “it’s great to be included! I think it shows that whoever is picking the line up can see what it is we are trying to achieve...it's bloody marvellous!” As MistaBreeze noted, “it’s good that we are the only Hip Hop act on as it means we will be remembered.”

Post-Split, the BBB gang have some big plans; “We are embarking upon an intergalactic tour, hitting hotspots such as Uranus and giving Orion’s belt a good whipping and finishing off with a good portion of the Milky Way,” says Baron. “In between we shall be hitting large cities in the UK. Keep an ear to the ground for the sounds of us pulsating our way across the universe rounding off by tearing this galaxy a new worm hole.”

“In the North East the 'hip hop' label is something that other acts in the genre are not keen to share with

ANNOUNCEMENTS BUNKER DANCE This month, we're giving a shout out to a top local label. Bunker Dance recently presented a show on Spark FM, featuring Middlesbrough-based label boss Domineeky. This label is doing great stuff helping to support local Deep House producers and get their music out there; the label’s movement is led by Domineeky himself. The vibe of his music is African-inspired house, drawing on his love of African rhythms and percussion, His musical influences include Atjazz and Osunlade, and a passion for house and club music from the UK and US; a definite presence in his productions. Donimeeky’s 'Good Voodoo Music' record label has released remixes by local house acts Red Star Arcade and Off The Cuff, as well as big names like Adam Shaw and Giom. Some of the label’s music has been played on the likes of Universal Records, Big Dada/Ninja Tune, Sky TV, BBC Radio and Channel 4. The label are set to release 'Good Voodoo Afro House Volume 1' on August 13th. www.goodvoodoomusic.com

Final Split line-up revealed

The final acts confirmed for this year's Split Festival have been revealed. In addition to local legends This Ain’t Vegas, and the Mr’s of Sunderland The Futureheads, North East scamps Athletes In Paris, and Newcastle’s lady with soul Lulu James will join a host of locals on stage throughout the weekend. The top few inches on the line-up have finally been revealed. Joining us fresh from appearances at Leeds & Reading are the mentally-brilliantly unstable Pulled Apart By Horses. Our editor EH went to take a quick spy at this lot at Leeds this year and tell’s us we are in for a treat! Not to mention the announcement of Public Image as this years Saturday headliners. Johnny Rotten, the man who fronted seminal punk band, Sex Pistols, will headline this year's Split Festival with Public Image Ltd the band hew formed in 1978 after the break up of the Sex Pistols. The band have a string of hits in their armoury such as 'This Is Not A Love Song' and 'Rise' and after being on hiatus from 1992 they have returned to the scene this summer with a new material. You can get your tickets online now at www.splitfestival.com John Lydon, will fly his band, Public Image Ltd, in from LA to close Split's Saturday programme. In association with The Bunker, Natasha Haws & Friends will take place on October 26th in the historic 400+ capacity venue. Continuing her stratospheric rise to prominence, singer-songwriter Natasha Haws released her debut EP in May and will play to a South Shields crowd on the eve of her single release in November, alongside some very special guests and friends. Sunderland’s fantastic folk heartthrobs Lilliput and fellow sandancers The Railway Club will join her, as well as a soon to be announced super-special guest. Spark FM's new voice It was a sad day for Spark FMs local music show back in July when the wonderfully witty, damn-right maverick talents of Nathan Would left the mic to hang. We wish Nathan all the best in his ventures and hope to see him either riding a horse bare-butt-naked in the near future or become part of the hottest stand up talent in the UK. On to pastures new for him and a new set of lungs to talk us through a four hour romp of local music we welcome the fore Ruth Edmundson and Alex Burgess. A bit of lass-ness to put a shimmery sparkle on your local music delivery every Sunday on 107 Spark FM.

THIS MON TH J O N AT H A N PA R K E R : P H O T O G R A P H E R What are you listening to at the moment? Presently, I am revisiting a couple of old favourite albums; Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man Out of Season, a quality crafted collection of compositions as a unique side project from the Portishead singer. Plus Stina Nordenstam's 1998 album People are Strange, in my mind, one of the best covers albums ever created. I was inspired recently to revisit it due to the recent influx of modern bands/singers doing cover versions and being disappointed by some of the rather uninspiring results. I've always personally believed, if you are going to record and release a cover version of something then you must strive to put your own unique stamp upon it or the particular journey is rather pointless. I'm also listening to the latest releases by; Ane Brun - It All Starts With One and, Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo - Almanac. Two particularly well-crafted albums of recent releases, Ane Brun is a particularly fine singer and songwriter from Scandinavia, with an addictive track on the new album called Do You Remember. Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo, I was introduced to them through a gig they performed recently at Old Cinema Launderette in Durham, it was a very fine gig with luscious vocal harmonies and strings in sweet wellcrafted songs. Plus, only just recently, the quality heartwarming Scottish singer/songwriter Ivan Drever, released his new album Keep on Keeping On, I await with joy to hear that new album. Parallel to my music revisits and recent releases, I'm listening a lot

to new recordings and music of local bands; WATCHERS, Parastatic, Lilliput, Bridie Jackson and the Arbour - Bitter Lullabies, Skylark Song and, more recently, Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra, who release in October their first album called Money Isn't Everything. I've enjoyed the great pleasure of working a lot as photographer for all these great bands and in particular Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra at their gigs and events. A great band I highly recommend checking out.

What are you reading? At the moment, I am reading two books; Franco by Paul Preston and, Charlotte Street by Danny Wallace. I tend to always have two books on the go at one time because, my reading moments will always depend upon my free time around my workload so, one book will be a light read and the other a more indepth read in this case, the Danny Wallace is a nice light read and the authors first novel and, the historical work about Franco by Paul Preston is a more intense read for those days when I take a day off work and enjoy a full day of reading and relaxation.

What are you watching? As I don't own a TV, haven't done for years, I read the news websites on a daily basis, watch gigs and Art House films at the Tyneside Cinema, last one being the fantastic The Artist, and, when I get chance and being someone who is passionate about the outdoors and countryside, whenever I can, I watch beautiful sunrise and sunsets. What gigs are you going to? Having been given the wonderful opportunity this year to be the summer event/gig photographer for the fantastic Cumberland Arms in Newcastle, I've been enjoying many quality gigs there while photographing the performances and atmosphere. Namely recently, I've enjoyed some great gigs and performances by; Warm Digits, The Cornshed Sisters, Skylark Song, The Kentucky Cowtippers, Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra, The Baghdaddies, Holy Moly and the Crackers. Plus, the most recent quality LONE WOLF gig I attended had; WATCHERS, Parastatic and Warning! It was a particularly good evening of great performances and a line-up that really complimented each other. I recommend to anyone all the bands I have seen perform recently and if you want to see images of the talent on stage, check out my Facebook page Spurious Nonsense Art Photography. Jonathan will be presenting performances by Ivan Drever, at Cumberland Arms, Newcastle on October 4th, and Westgarth Social Club, Middlesbrough on October 6th.

www.manifestosunderland.com

We catch up with two more stalwarts of the NE music scene to find out what’s blaring out of their speakers, falling off their book shelves, a regular on the TV screens and burning a hole in their pockets on a night out!

D AV I D WA L A : P H O T O G R A P H E R What are you listening to at the moment? This week mainly Howler – America, Give Up, Best Coast - The Only Place, The Libertines - Up The Bracket, and Elliott Smith - Figure 8. What are you reading? I’ve just finished American by Don De Lillo and am now reading The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. What are you watching? Inspector Montalbano, working my way through Dexter on DVD, Romanzo Criminale, and the fascinating Great British Bake Off.

What gigs are you going to? This week The Watchers and Symphonic Pictures, and Natasha Haws. I’m out most nights photographing gigs; we have an incredible amount of talented local bands.

FATHOMS “A mechanised maelstrom of guitar and drum thunder." That's how the dark metal ooze of Newcastle's Fathoms has been recently described. Sound like your sort of bag? Sandwiched between Nately's Whore's Kid Sister and Acrobatic Society on the Kittle PR Presents stage, Fathoms will be bringing their mythology-steeped noise to the ears of Split Parade. Formed in 2012, and lead by Swedish folk singer Nathalie Stern, Fathoms have so far shared the stage with heavy-hitters like That Fucking Tank, Humanfly, VOM, Grace, Nately’s Whore's Kid Sister, We Are Knuckledragger, Richard Dawson and Tide of Iron. Taking their cues from the murkier end of the scope, Fathoms stir up an alchemic mix of classic rock harmonies, pulverising riffs and roaring rhythms. Inspired by space, fantasy art and magic, Paradegoers can expect old school thrash-outs, theatrics and possibly a cape or two. Tagged as one to watch by UK Metal Underground, who dubbed them “dark sludge metal sniffin' lines of hardcore, black metal and galactic wind," Fathoms are currently warming back up to the live scene after their drummer broke his arm. Recent appearances at NARCFest and gigs around the country have paved the way for the band's upcoming EP, for which they're currently writing new material. “We're looking forward to being part of Split Parade, and playing with our friends Nately's Whore's Kid Sister is always a pleasure,” they say. Catch Fathoms on the Kittle PR Presents stage at Plugged Inn.

THE SONS OF BIDO LITO Like a bit of swagger with your indie-rock? Fancy some dusty psychedelic tunes to twist to this Parade? Then get yourself down to the MMBE Presents stage at The Little Room, Independent to catch The Sons of Bido Lito. If they can tear themselves away from YouTube that is. “The Bidos have been quite busy recently,” they say, “writing new stuff and recording two tracks for our first EP, which we hope to have out later in the year. We've also been laughing at some old Oliver Reed interviews.” “Our first EP is the main focus for the future, as we want something physical for people to have as opposed to data streamed through cables. We are technologically simple men and prefer to put a record on rather than log into a hard drive. There are some local gigs coming up; as well as Split Parade, we're supporting a great band called The Wicked Whispers at The Cluny on the 18th of October.” So what can punters expect from The Bidos this year? “We're not really the type of band who will have gimmicks like a glitter cannon or whatever, we'll be flying through the set as fast as possible. As gig-goers ourselves we find it cringe-worthy when you come across a singer who starts talking about what he's had for his tea, or telling you that the next song is about him crying in the dole queue or whatever. We just want to hear them play so we are going to do what we would like if we were in the audience.” See The Sons of Bido Lito rocking the MMBE Presents stage at The Little Room, Independent. SPLIT PARADE ExhIBITION We're branching out at Camp Split this year, incorporating all corners of Sunderland's creative community to make one big, happy, extremely cultured family. As well as introducing comedy, magic and cabaret to Split Parade, we'll also be hosting a lovely array of locally sourced art for you to wrap your eyes around. In association with Sunderland City Council, Split Festival will this year host its very first exhibition. The exhibition will display work by the countless talented photographers from across the North East, who have captured some of our finest bands and artists both past and present. Snappers and artists including Ian West, Idene Roozbayani, Paul Burgess, David Wala, Caroline Briggs and Dee Chaneva will all be showing their work, which features some of our top local acts and their artwork. Field Music, The Futureheads, Maximo Park and countless other brilliant (and rather handsome) musicians will be part of a visual showcase of the history of Sunderland's music scene. The exhibition will open at Creative Cohesion on Saturday 15th September at 2.00pm, with a very special performance from the wickedly brilliant Amy Holford. The exhibition will again be open on Sunday

Last year’s parade leaders B>E>A>K will bring the party to a close headlining the main room at Independent. Special guests Nately’s Whore’s Kid Sister will be joined by a host of emerging North East artists across Sunderland’s ‘holme’ of music. The parade will again kick off at Cosa Nostra with representatives from all across local music invited to enjoy comedy, food and a folk style sing-along with Barry Hyde in the cabaret opening event. The Parade will once again be led by a very special Sunderland musicians collective from Cosa Nostra on to the wealth of talent waiting on Holmeside. Words EMMA HOWE

Polarsets

2011's Split Parade built on two previous years of events to warm up the city for Sunderland’s biggest festival. Led by mackem high flyers B>E>A>K, Holmeside and local giggoers were led on a merry dance to packed out venues and stellar lineups. Highlights included a show

stopping opening from Tynesiders Young Liar at Plugged Inn, a headline performance from Newcastle’s finest Lets Buy Happiness in The Little Room before Razmataz Lorry Excitement took the party into the early hours in Independent.

Split Parade organiser Emma Howe says We are very excited to once again be bringing Split Parade to the streets of Sunderland. Last year was such a fantastic event and this year is going to be even bigger. We have a brilliant lineup that showcases the phenomenally high standard of music we have coming out of the North East, and a team of organisers from all across local music working together to ensure the Split party begins nice and early.

Are you looking forward to returning to Sunderland for Split Parade? Aye we had a class time at Plugged Inn a few months back, we beat Ross from The Futureheads out of the traffic lights on the way home so hopefully there’ll be more of the same this time round. You’ve not played much in Sunderland so far, what can Parade-goers who’ve not experienced NWKS expect from your set? Fully grown men playing half arsed shit riffs whilst struggling with balance, timing and hygiene. Each has their own identity, much like the spice women.

Will you be treating us to some of your new Death/Gomez-esque new material?

Who else will you be looking to catch at Split Parade, aside from your best buddies Fathoms?

We don’t actually like death or Gomez any more, the new stuff is more living and Shed 7 inspired.

Acrobatic Society are class, we’re happy to be sharing the stage with them again. I’m looking forward to seeing Nadine Shah again. I’ve not seen her before, like.

You’ve become infamous for your unique visual aesthetic on stage; have you got anything special lined up for the gig? Big projections of Niall Quinn goals and Peter Reid masks.

What are your plans for the rest of 2012? Can we expect any new releases from NWKS? We’ve got some exciting stuff going on with another local band. We won’t say who it is, but they’re the second best band working in the Ouseburn valley and they are juvenile fibbers.

REVIEWS: LIVE

www.manifestosunderland.com

You can’t move for small festivals in this country these days. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life, and with people beginning to leak away from the larger festivals in dribs and drabs, music lovers have a near endless choice of events to pitch their tent at. The Lake District’s Kendal Calling is just one of these fledgling festies competing for punters, but it is certainly well worth your time.

19 With so many festivals clawing for the best and most well-known bands, smaller festivals often place emphasis on the overall experience rather than relying on a wall-to-wall smattering of bighitters. While boasting the likes of We Are Scientists, Maxïmo Park, Feeder, Dizzee Rascal, The View, and James, the bulk of the bill was made up of up-and-comers and relative unknowns, offering the opportunity both for the unearthing of new treasures or a relaxing plan-free day in the fields. Being just 90 minutes up the road, it’s an ideal event for musos of the North East; they even borrowed a fair few of our top acts. We caught a handful of local artists doing us proud over the weekend. Little Comets bounded around the packed-out Calling Out stage, rousing a sleepy early-evening audience into rampant shapethrowers. Vinyl Jacket’s keyboardist scooped the award for most energetic performance of the weekend, leaping around like a demented wallaby (if he slept in a tent the night before that, I’ll eat my hat. Or preferably whatever he had for breakfast). B>E>A>K went walk-abouts on the House Party Stage, winning over baffled punters with their exuberant brass-beats. (Check out our Gotcha page to see the White Swan giving Kendal’s health and safety officers an aneurism.) Closing the Friday night, Maximo Park whizzed through a set of classics and well-placed new material with boundless enthusiasm and charisma, ensuring the first night closes with a bang, despite the damp weather.
