LET THE PARTY BEGIN Composition No. 6
• This piece offers many new challenges: 1) sixteenth-note scalar passages 2) extended staccato tonguing (in the accompaniment) 3) increased independence of parts Begin in a slower tempo until the students become comfortable with all of these new technical challenges. • Bars 9 through 12 are particularly challenging as the texture expands to four independent parts.

New Instrument: HI-HAT
Slurred sixteenth notes, introduced in Exercise 4, present a new technical challenge. While the slurs remove tonguing from the equation, making it easier for the students to play their sixteenth notes rapidly, the students may be tempted to rush the notes while slurring. Encourage otherwise!

REHEARSAL NOTES

Trombone
The eighth-note triplet appears for the first time. The teacher should devote ample time to this new concept that a quarter note can be broken down into three subdivisions, not just two or four subdivisions.
The dynamics of and are introduced in Exercises 3 and 5 respectively. Airstream support and tone quality control at these extreme dynamic levels may be difficult to achieve, but well worth the effort!

After devoting extensive attention to rhythm in the first five lessons, the students now get to learn some new pitches.
Concert C Major is introduced in Exercise 2 in the form of a C Major scale. It might be useful to have students play concert B b Major and C Major scales back to back. When playing the C Major scale, students may wish to mark those concert B-naturals in pencil as reminders.

• Percussionists also learn new techniques: hand-dampening on timpani to produce staccato effect, closed hi-hat technique, and snare drum played with brushes rather than sticks. This might be a good day to devote extra time to these players as they learn these fun new techniques.
