C O M P O S E R ’ S

N O T E S

Shortly after completing the concert band version of C O N C E R T I N O F O R T R O M B O N E I created the present version in which the concert band is

replaced by two pianos and percussion. As soon as I heard it I realized that this new chamber version brought a clarity to the work and generated an entirely new kind of excitement. The original work was composed in 1984 for the trombonist H. Dennis Smith, and requires an extraordinary technique and four-octave range. Two versions of the third-movement cadenza exist, both the original cadenza and an alternative, extended cadenza requiring greater virtuosity and range; both appear in this edition. The three movements of C O N C E R T I N O F O R T R O M B O N E are played without pause. In the first movement, Dialogue, angular lines of the soloist interrupt rivulets of sound in the pianos. A rhythmically free cadenza bridges the first movement to the second movement, Interlude (Largo), interjecting the lyrical qualities of the cup-muted trombone over a kind of ground bass in the pianos and a floating line in vibraphone. The pianos suddenly interrupt the peaceful flow, bringing on third movement, Finale, a fast, wild dance, whose rhythmic drive is fueled by a 9/8 accompaniment in pianos/tambourine against an implied 6/8 melody in the solo.

FRANK TICHELI

The complete set of this work includes 1 conductor score (the work can be performed with or without conductor), 2 player scores (containing Piano I and II and cue-sized tromobne and percussion), 1 trombone part, and 1 percussion part.
