Chamber's Advocacy Group Taking Applications

The Chamber wears a number of hats as we work on your behalf to grow Manhattan. One of the most important ways is by advocating for pro-growth and business friendly policies at all levels of government.

About three years ago, the Chamber revamped its policy committee and created what is today the Business Advocacy Committee (BAC). The BAC is the group primarily responsible for evaluating policy issues and making recommendations to the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Additionally, members of the BAC take an active role in meeting with elected officials on a regular basis to create a dialog on initiatives and issues that are important to Manhattan businesses.

This year, the BAC has openings for three new voting members.

Festival of Lights It’s the beginning of holiday traditions. This is the 7th year the Manhattan community celebrates the lighting of the tallest Christmas tree in Kansas. We look forward to seeing you Friday evening following Thanksgiving at Blue Earth Plaza as Santa lights up the tree at 7 p.m. May your family traditions during the holidays begin around the Christmas tree.

Who is behind the Festival of Lights? Whoville!

Whoville, Inc. was formed by four Manhattan business owners and community leaders. Their mission is to bring Kansas families closer together during the holidays while showcasing Blue Earth Plaza. The Manhattan Festival of Lights is a magical place for children to sit on Santa’s lap, listen to choral groups, and enjoy hot chocolate by the fireside, all free and open to the public. Over 130,000 beautiful lights dance to classic holiday tunes, which can also be heard on 88.1 FM. The Festival of Lights is not-for-profit, fully funded by private donations. Manhattan Conference Center Expansion to Begin The Manhattan Conference Center expansion is about to become a reality. The 7,300 sq. ft. expansion to our 15,000 sq. ft. conference center (almost ½ ballroom) will break ground in November. Construction is expected to take nine months. As a result of the expansion, the entire conference center will be refurbished with new state-of-the-art technology.

In addition to the expansion of the Manhattan Conference Center, the Hilton Garden Inn will undergo a complete renovation and add an additional 40 guest rooms, bringing to total room count to 175.

Room renovation will begin in Summer of 2020.

27th Annual Veterans Day Parade Thank a Veteran. Daily. Celebrating our Veteran’s in a BIG way is something Manhattan does on Veteran’s Day. Join in the festivities planned by the Flint Hills Veterans Coalition at the largest Veterans Day parade in the State of Kansas on Monday, Nov. 11. ZOO in You & Eat Well, Play Well at Flint Hills Discovery Center There is always something new to discover at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. You won’t want to miss the newest temporary exhibits: Zoo In You: The Human Micorbiome, and Eat Well, Play Well. The exhibit is open to all through Jan. 12.

Located in the Tallgrass Gallery on the Second Floor of the Discovery Center you will understand that trillions of microbes make their home inside our bodies, and we wouldn’t be able to survive without each other. Zoo in You invites people of all ages to explore the vibrant world of our inner microorganisms through engaging, interactive and bilingual (English/Spanish) exhibits while discovering who our constant microbial companions are, where they live, how diverse they are, and in what ways scientist are discovering just how important they are to our personal health.

Delegation Visits D.C. The Association of the United States Army Annual Meeting is held every October in Washington DC. This year our Fort Riley – Central Kansas AUSA Chapter had a great visit, both with our federal congressional delegation and with former 1st Infantry Division soldiers now in senior Army leadership positions. Having these former Big Red One soldiers in such high-level positions gives our AUSA chapter unprecedented access to promote our area and illustrate what makes Fort Riley the best place to live, train, deploy from, return home to, and to retire.

On Monday, the Chapter hosted guest speaker MG John Richardson, the Deputy Chief of Staff (G 3/5/7) of US Forces Command (FORCECOM).

At this lunch our Fort Riley – Central Kansas Chapter got a good look at the way forward for the Army from someone in the trenches, planning the next few years of what is to come. US Forces Command will work with Futures Command moving the Army forward to better fight multidomain fights – moving beyond the traditional sea, air, land and adding cyber into the mix in new and innovative ways.

On Tuesday, the Manhattan delegation headed to Capitol Hill where they visited with our elected leadership to discuss legislative priorities for both Manhattan and Fort Riley. Among the topics discussed: • Defense Community Infrastructure Program (DCIP) – a formerly unfunded mandate for military connected communities now funded with $75 million from the National Defense Authorization Act • Wind turbine legislation near military posts and airports

• National Flood Insurance Reauthorization

• Supporting the current authorization levels for Army (Regular, Guard, and Reserve) for operations and maintenance

• Ending targeted rescission cuts of $7.5 billion in transportation funding

• 2019 Build Grand for the North Campus Corridor

The Chamber shares our immense gratitude for your continuing commitment to our community. Thirty-four businesses have been inducted into Legacy Circle, including 28 charter members in 2015. It is with great excitement in 2019 that we added both Ryan and Sons Realtors and Heritage Builders to this distinguished group of business leaders.

The K-State Office Park hosted our October Business After Hours. The evening was filled with great networking and opportunities to tour their space. Bluestem Grill catered delicious hor d`oeuvres. The host provided six door prize baskets from various local businesses. Greg Willems and Greg Lohrentz thanked the crowd for
