“When Trey and Dayna Wasserburger of T/D ANGUS at Rishel Ranch make breeding decisions, they revolve around the mantra ‘Most of the Best.’ Doc Ryan is the epitome of that. There’s never been a beast this good to come out of this breeding program! The story of Doc Ryan began eight generations ago with Tiffany of BR. Born in 1982, with the beauty of a fine gem, she became the foundation matron of all Ruby of Tiffanys in the Angus breed. Seven Ruby of Tiffanys later, an amazing two-year-old, T/D Ruby of Tiffany 824, produced THE BULL of a generation.”

~ Bill Rishel, Master Angus Breeder

Doc Ryan is backed by Cow Power

As told by Bill Rishel Gen One Gen Four

Tiffany BR

The year was 1982, and a stunning heifer calf was born February 4th that struck us as being quite special in the way of a quality gemstone. So, we named her Tiffany BR. She became the foundation matron of the B/R Ruby of Tiffanys, one of the most impactful cow families of the Angus breed. It was about this time that I realized, using the “hottest” bull of the breed was not a breeding program, and having a goal of producing the “next great one” with no plan was a long-shot at best.

Gen Two

B/R Ruby of Tiffany

I was trained to believe in the value of great females in a pedigree, and it occurred to me that our goal should be to see “how small we could make the scrap pile” in each year’s calf crop. So, with that in mind, we mated Tiffany BR to AAR New Trend. The result was B/R Ruby of Tiffany, a female that, to this day, would represent the phenotype that I would want every cow in my herd to have. It was about this time that we embarked on identifying carcass merit in our program. The value of that effort would not be fully appreciated by the industry for another 10-15 years. We were committed to seeking carcass genetics without compromising fertility, structural correctness, and functional traits.

Gen Three

B/R Ruby of Tiffany 4117

The third cow in Doc Ryan’s lineage was B/R Ruby of Tiffany 4117, born in 1994. She still posts a heifer pregnancy EPD of +13 (top 35%) and a marbling EPD of +.71 (top 35%).

Longevity matters, and this female was mated at eight years of age to B/R New Frontier 095, the top-selling bull in the 2001 Rishel Angus sale, producing B/R Ruby of Tiffany 3156.

B/R Ruby of Tiffany 3156

This is a good time to mention that when we worked at “reducing the scrap pile,” bulls like “New Frontier” showed up at the top of their calf crops just like cream separating from the milk. They became more of the norm for us. B/R Ruby of Tiffany 3156 still posts a heifer pregnancy EPD of +13.1 (top 35%) and a marbling EPD of +.97 (top 15%).

Gen Five

B/R Ruby of Tiffany 8496

The next female in line is a daughter of B/R 65R Genesis, B/R Ruby of Tiffany 8496, the great-grandmother of Doc Ryan. She posts a marbling EPD of +1.38 (top 3%).

Gen Six

B/R Ruby of Tiffany 688

That brings us to the grandmother of Doc Ryan, B/R Ruby of Tiffany 688, and she posts a heifer pregnancy EPD of +17.3 (top 5%) and a marbling EPD of +1.37 (top 3%).

Gen Seven

T/D Ruby of Tiffany 824

The female that is the seventh generation of this story is T/D Ruby of Tiffany 824, who, as a two-year-old female, produced the eighth generation Doc Ryan, the highest-selling and one of the most remarkable individuals in the storied history of the Rishel program. She records a heifer pregnancy EPD of +14.4 (top 25%) and a marbling EPD of +1.35 (top 3%).

Herbster Bennington 389 4

Herbster Bennnington 389 has the second-highest WW EPD in the sale at +100 and weighed an impressive adjusted 852 pounds at weaning. Backed by his beautiful and productive dam, Herbster Saras Dream 7237 and the production power of Doc Ryan, he is poised to take your herd to the next level. He ranks in the top 1% of Non-Parent sires for WW EPD, the top 3% for YW EPD, and the top 5% for carcass weight, proving he has the power. His dam, Herbster Saras Dream 7237, “Wanda” is the winningest female in Herbster Angus Farms history. Miranda Raithel took her to the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) four times, and she was in a division champion photo every year! “Wanda,” was the NJAS Reserve Division 1 Champion Female in 2018, the NJAS Late Senior Division Champion in 2019, the NJAS Grand Champion Owned Cow and Calf in 2020, and the NJAS Mature Owned Cow and Calf Champion in 2021.

Herbster Saras Dream 7237 – “Wanda” was the 2020 National Junior Angus Show Grand Champion Cow and Calf.
Herbster Saras Dream 7237 – “Wanda” is our donor and winningest cow in Herbster Angus Farms history and the dam of Lot 4.

His dam, from another cornerstone cow family at Herbster Angus Farms, is an Emblynette that descends from the same maternal line that created one of our senior resident herd sires, International. His great granddam, SAV Emblynette 6572, is a full sister “in blood” to the dam of International. She currently, at the age of 19, still serves as a donor cow in our program. She has 13BW@100, 13WW@101, 13YW101, and 18%IMF@100. Being flushed throughout her life, she still kept a 414-day calving interval until the age of 15. She had her recent natural calf at the young age of 16 before going to the donor pen full time. The fertility and longevity of this cow line is “the good stuff” cow herds are built upon.

Herbster Oakland 363

This age-advantaged, two-year-old bull ran on a set of mature cows for us last spring. A growth and power bull deluxe, Herbster Oakland 363 has a beautiful, great-uddered dam sired by Herbster Republic. The Republic daughters have been excellent mothers for us.

SAV North Face 9140 – Our
and performance bull and sire of Lots 39 and 74.

Herbster Palindrome 4114

After seeing the Renovation sire group at Schaff Angus Valley in 2023, we thought using the bull would be a great fit for our program. The Renovation calves were amazing for their overall width and extreme muscle of the progeny, as well as the extra dose of maternal excellence you get through the Madame Pride cow family. The Lot 40 bull, Herbster Palindrome 4114 is a direct son of Renovation, out of a President dam, making him a double-bred “4136.” His dam, SAV Blackcap May 8165 is a perfect-uddered, model Angus female with incredible femininity and ideal structure. She has 3WW@103. We have appreciated “4114” since birth for his thickness, length of side, depth, and structural correctness. A moderate-framed option, he’s been a favorite in this calf crop for many on the Herbster Angus Farms crew for his overall eye appeal and ease of fleshing.

Herbster Kearney 4130 is a high-gaining son of the popular phenotype sire, 24 Karat. His mother, Colburn Saras Dream 6230, was a Class Winner at the 2017 National Junior Angus Show and the Reserve Grand Champion Angus Female at the 2017 Nebraska State Fair. Don’t overlook the fact he ratioed 105 in a tough contemporary group. This bull has pounds!

Everyone who has talked to us about the Simmental Division of Herbster Angus Farms has heard our story on how we select our genetics for that breed. I’ll keep it short, and just tell you we choose cattle and cow families for pure phenotype and performance. We demand a correct foot, perfect leg structure, fleshing ability, and attractiveness. We don’t even crack the book on EPDs, and we don’t let the data that is formulated by the Association skew our views. We keep actual performance data on the Simmental herd and work on pounds at weaning, yearling, and fertility. Therefore, the Simmental herd is a beautiful thing. Our Simmental cows are incredible. They have great udders and are superior mothers.

The pair of bulls that sell as Lots 42 and 43 are products of that selection process. Sired by Dynamo, the best Remedy son on the market today; and out of our resident American Royal Grand Champion Purebred Female, “414B,” they are big-footed, long-spined, and slick fronted. We don’t keep

“I just found out that our Governor son was high gaining bull in the 2024 Iowa Angus Association Bull Test. He gained 5.1 pounds a day on test. In addition, our 2024 Reserve Champion Female at the Iowa Beef Expo had a Sundance heifer last night unassisted. We are very happy with Herbster Angus Farms genetics!”

“Herbster Angus Farms semen collected at North American Breeders is potent. We timed AI bred 60 heifers with a 70 percent conception rate versus 55 percent from semen collected at other studs. We also use it in our dairy on beef program and on hard-to-settle cows with excellent results. We highly recommend using Herbster Angus Farms semen to everyone!”

“The Lot 16 bull (Herbster Doctor Fleming 279 AAA# 20458558) I bought from Herbster Angus Farms last spring did a great job. As a yearling, he bred 22 of 23 heifers. Nine of them are already calved out 10 days early. The calves have a powerful drive to get to the teat and survive. They averaged about 65 pounds out of heifers.”
