THE COLLAGE

Harmony can be represent with the women that is walking her dog in the park as human can get along with the dog friendly. Next, the picture on the right is showing the concept of quite with nobody in the park. Besides, the park itself is a nature as it is full of tress, grass and bushes.

People who visits the park would feel refresh once they walked into the park.

DEPLOYABLE ARCHITECTURE

The Harbour Kiosk completed in 2019 is a unique robotic architecture that integrates a food kiosk and a mechanical room with a kinetic facade. The structure system of Harbour Kiosk were designed to withstand the typhoon season in Hong Kong.

The 300-sqft M&E machine room in the kiosk provides water and electricity for the surrounding Avenue of Stars, as well as the sound system for the city’s nightly light show. The remaining 100sqft of the kiosk enhanced the public function of the food kiosk. A 56-ft long wall space is to accommodate more public functions, including a vending machine, drinking fountains, and info screens.

PEFC-certified red balau wood treated with exterior grade oil finish for better durability against UV and termites as the sustainable facade material because of its strength, hardness, lightness and cost-effectiveness. It is lighter than steel and glass, as well as renewable.

My first impression towards the Harbour kiosk is the colour of the timber wood used on the kinetic facade and the secondary motion where the timber fins move gently throughout the day, as if it is breathing with sea waves also had harmonised the texture between technology and nature at the waterfront.

The harbour kiosk uses rhythm as it's principle of design. As we can see, the timber fins are used repeatedly on the facade of the kiosk. A safety sensor was also installed at the kiosk counter to ensure clearance during the opening and closing of the timber fins.

The usefulness of this Harbour Kiosk is the facade which open in the day with the sun ray and closes at night automatically. At night time, the building’s wooden exterior remains closed, but with the first rays of sunrise, it begins to fold upwards and into an awning. Furthermore, the open form of facade creates a natural canopy.

Do not need human strength to operate them.

Save spaces without door and canopy.

Save energy Save environment using renewable material.

Not easily damaged like shutter.

Facade will be damaged easily when it is forced to push or pull frequently.

Facade is hard to maintain as it is a natural material.

Timber might crack or face colour fading after a long time.

DEPLOYABLE structure in architecture means a shape of something can be changed throughout a process. In another word, it is also called as a transformable architecture.

Why is a deployable structure important ?

A deployable or moveable structure is common in the 21st century. It is important because deployable or foldable structure can save a lot of time and space.

For instance, it is useful and convenient in some condition such as earthquakes, tsunami and many other natural disasters.

Moreover, a transformable shelter can also saves money as when there is an emergency, we would not have enough fund on time to raise a building. Hence, a few of the small shelters can be transported easily and used while needed.

For a small shelter to be transported easily, many shelters and small structures have used lightweight material to built such as timber that was used in this shelter and lightweight steel framing.

Most importantly, a small shelter saves more energy compares to a building as it only required a little amount of light.
