Yom Limmud

DAY OF JEWISH LEARNING

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 15 • 9 AM-2 PM

Join us for an engaging Yom Limmud for all ages and Jewish backgrounds. The theme is “Finding Light in the Darkness,” one that will be tied to both Chanukah and our times. In the sessions, we will explore hope, healing, mental health, light and repair in Judaism and Chanukah.

Some sessions will be lectures, text studies, or more traditional learning opportunities, while others will include hands-on workshops, crafts and more.

SESSION 1 • 9:15-10 AM

Chanukah Movement Class

SUNBEAMS MUSIC AND MOVEMENT INSTRUCTOR

Join Morah Maria for a fun Chanukah-inspired music and movement class, designed to get kids energized and excited for the holiday! This class is good for our youngest friends through early childhood age.

Chanukah Story Time and Crafts with PJ Library

FOR KIDS FOR KIDS FOR KIDS

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE CLEVELAND KOSHER FOOD PANTRY

Give back to the less fortunate by assembling a “Can-orah,” a menorah made from cans of kosher food to be donated to the Cleveland Kosher Food Pantry. We will also decorate Chanukah cards to accompany the holiday packages that will be delivered to those in need.

Nariya Cleveland Singing Immersive: Darkness and Light

Featuring original music, Rabbi Micah Shapiro will lead a singing community gathering that draws out the relationship between darkness and light in our sacred Jewish texts. No singing experience required.

Chanukah: A Zionist Perspective

In this session, we will examine how Chanukah has been reinvented in the era of modern Zionism. We will examine the Zionist roots and Israeli politics of the ancient Maccabean holiday.

Art as Midrash & Midrash as Art: Judith and Holofernes

The story of Judith has been tied to the festival of Chanukah, but is it? This session will be an opportunity to explore how her story is portrayed in midrash (biblical interpretation) and we will compare the text with how she has been portrayed in art.

Olive Press Workshop

Become a modern day Maccabee! Refine the olive oil needed for the Temple Menorah as they did way back then by pressing olives the ancient way! Fashion a wick out of cotton for use when lighting the Menorah, and bring home a sample of the oil.

What is Love?

This session will help define Judaism’s outlook on love and how it is possible to find love in difficult relationships.
