MANDEL JCC ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021

EXPLORE, REFLECT AND JOURNEY WITH US

A MESSAGE FROM MINDY DAVIDSON We set out on a journey through this new pandemic landscape. We adapted, improvised and overcame. We learned what could be done digitally and did it – everything from Arts, Ideas & Jewish Life to Camp dance parties. We delivered meals to homes that used to be provided on-site. We closed for safety’s sake, but reopened our doors as soon as we could.

THE EARTH SHIFTED BENEATH US IN THE PAST YEAR. Familiar landmarks vanished and well-trod paths closed. Mandel JCC, its members and the communities we serve found themselves in unfamiliar territory, uncertain of how to proceed safely and worried about losing what we’d worked so hard to create. Turning back was not an option. There was too much at stake; too many people depended on The J. We had to find a way to continue to provide the services that would be even more in demand during the COVID-19 crisis while protecting our members, staff and volunteers. There was no map to follow, no emergency manual in a drawer. So we turned to what has sustained the Jewish people throughout our history: our values, our faith, our tenacity and our identity. Everything around us might have changed; who we are hadn’t.

We didn’t travel alone on this journey. Our members and community partners were with us every step of the way, encouraging us, supporting us and letting us know how much The J means to them. Just as we strove to serve our members and communities, they, along with our partner organizations, came to our aid. They donated to cover our revenue shortfall. They bought and renewed memberships even though they couldn’t use them at the time. They made a point of engaging digitally with us. Over the course of the pandemic, we were reminded again and again of the integral role The J has in the community. We heard from so many of you about what you missed and how you couldn’t wait to return. Those messages left us more determined than ever to carry on. Of course, the crisis is not over. COVID-19 variants come in waves. The financial impact of the pandemic continues to be felt. But we’re confident we’ve made it through the worst of it. Though The J has not yet been able to return

AND MICHAEL HYMAN fully to its pre-pandemic programming, we are restoring services and adding new features as quickly as we can. The entire experience reminds us of the old saying, “If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go together.” We journeyed together through this frightening and unsettling landscape and we are nearing our destination. We couldn’t have done it alone. Thanks especially to our dedicated Board of Trustees, generous donors, loyal and hard-working staff and partners. We give special thanks to the Jewish Federation of Cleveland for its unwavering support. A successful journey is one in which fellow travelers arrive not only together but more closely bonded than when they started out. That is what we’ve accomplished.

Adapting and Planning FOR NEEDS OF YOUNG LEARNERS The Early Childhood Services program is emerging from the pandemic with a vision for how it can better serve The J community. Classes are smaller; schedules are simpler; and more activities are held outdoors. The planned addition of a new studio off the main lobby will showcase the children’s projects and give young families a place to create together. “The improvements are due to planning that was underway before COVID-19 struck and changes wrought by the pandemic,” said Early Childhood Services Director Jessica Robins. The Five Star Step-Up-to-Quality rated program was already deep in planning changes and regular staff training when the pandemic started and The J was forced to close. Like other programs at The J, Early Childhood Services was forced to adapt and improvise. It offered online programming and started a YouTube channel to give families flexibility in their schedules. It sent care packages full of educational material and activities to the homes of our early childhood families. Of course, teaching very young children online was difficult for everyone involved. “We started to feel as the weeks and months dragged on that what the families want, what the children need and deserve is in-person care,” Robins said. 4

After careful planning and research into how to operate safely, Early Childhood Services resumed in-person classes in July 2021 with new restrictions and safeguards in place. Grateful families re-enrolled, though not as many as before the pandemic. “I think people felt it provided a real sense of normalcy and a sense of routine that they had been lacking,” Robins said. “It helped everyone with their mental health and gave everyone a break. We really believed it was the right thing to have children back within our walls, socializing with each other and with their teachers.” Classes were smaller and there was a renewed emphasis on the core curriculum with fewer special programs. And while outdoor play and activities had always been a part of learning, the playground, woods and garden are being used now more than ever. “We spent so much more time outside and it was tremendous,” Robins said. “Our plan is to continue to use those spaces we rediscovered this year.” The program also is renewing face-to-face contact with parents who were limited to engaging only digitally during the pandemic. Even as it recovers from the pandemic, Early Childhood Services continues to plan. In addition to creating the studio space off the lobby and raising the profile of the program, Robins would like to soon add infant care in order to serve more families.

She said the trailblazing and detours of the past year have reminded her of “masa,” or journey, one of the seven lenses of the Sheva framework of Jewish early childhood education.

“The children we serve are on a tremendous journey. They start so young and they leave here so mature and ready for that next step,” she said. “It’s a journey for families, too. I think it’s a beautiful process to be able to guide the children and the families along on this initial exposure to education.”

Fitness Center Provides Lifeline During Pandemic It wasn’t long after the lockdown that Sue Hanson began to feel exercise withdrawal. Like many dedicated exercisers she had come to depend on regular classes at The J, not only for the physical activity, but for companionship and socializing. Sue has been a regular in classes since joining in 1997. “I wanted to stay strong and keep up a good quality of life,” the 89-year-old retired medical technician said. Her normal routine was three low-impact aerobics classes a week: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 11 am. When The J closed in March 2020 because of COVID-19, Hanson and other members relied on their own ingenuity to exercise. At home in Shaker Heights, she walked, stretched and did basic workouts. Though The J began offering classes online during the shutdown, Hanson didn’t join. “I like to be in a group, moving and listening to music. That’s what works for me,” she said. She also missed the friends she’d made at The J, a group of about 10 women who took the same classes. “We all enjoyed each other so much. We’d go out and celebrate each others’ birthdays over lunch. “I’m a social person. I really like to be around people,” she said.

6

Making it safe for Hanson and her friends to resume classes in-person as quickly as possible was a priority for new General Manager of Fitness and Membership Joe Schillero, who had the misfortune of starting work on the week after The J shut down. Schillero, who came to The J from a job at the University of Cincinnati, wasn’t even able to meet with his team in person or familiarize himself with the now-closed facilities. “We had no playbook for this,” he said. “My staff and I had to bond together more quickly than we would have otherwise. We had to work together and get through this as a team.” That meant taking stock of which classes and services could be offered online, who could teach them and what members would be interested in and able to access them. Within a month, The J was offering classes through Facebook, then its own online platform. Participation was enthusiastic, Joe said. For Schillero and his staff, the biggest obstacle during this period was being unable to plan more than a week or two ahead. With health advisories and mandates changing constantly, long-range planning was more guesswork than anything else. “We had to keep a loose grip on planning and seeing into the future because we really couldn’t,” he said.

Stressful circumstances can cause teams to fall apart or rise to the occasion. In this case, the fitness team bonded and adjusted to the new demands. Once mandates were lifted and safety measures were in place, The J reopened for classes in July 2020. Hanson was more than ready: “I was so eager to come that I was the only one in the class at the beginning.” She might have been first, but others followed. “We’ve had so many people come up to us and say, ‘Thank you for being open. It’s literally saving my life’,” Schillero said. “They need community; they need physical activity; they need the things that can help their mental well-being.”

While the facilities are fully open, the offering of classes and activities have not yet been wholly restored, largely due to staffing shortages. The extensive library of online classes is still there for those who aren’t coming in. Schillero and his staff are committed to making sure The J returns to normalcy and continues to offer the best possible services to members. “The combination of helping people mentally and helping them physically through these past two crazy years has been so important and so satisfying to everyone here at The J,” he said. Hanson is back on her pre-pandemic schedule of three classes a week. “I love it,” she said. “I missed it so badly when it was gone.”

Our Journey Together

2020 In July and August 2020, Camp Wise welcomed more than 430 children and adults from the community to Wise Outdoor Fun Days, which allowed families and small groups to connect with nature for socially distanced outdoor recreation on the beloved camp grounds.

The J supported the growth of 38 preschool children and 21 toddlers enrolled in our Early Childhood Preschool and Toddler Care programs by creating a learning environment and experiences that sparked wonder and creativity integrated with Jewish teachings, traditions and customs.

While The J’s Camp Wise Jewish overnight camp was canceled in Summer 2020 due to the pandemic, Camp Wise staff engaged more than 1,000 campers in its online community through 175 hours of virtual programming.

Young Families programming offered in June 2021 provided opportunities for 76 children ages birth to 5 years old with their parents or caregivers to play, sing, move, explore and meet new friends. These teacher-facilitated programs included Baby and Me Yoga, Move and Groove, Music Makers and Tot Shabbat.

During Summer 2020 while J-Day Camps was on hiatus due to COVID-19, in July and August staff hosted 22 virtual programs titled “Summer with The J” to foster creativity and connectedness. A total of 87 unique youth participants from kindergarten to eighth grade engaged in the programs, with many participating in multiple classes.

The 14th annual Cleveland Jewish FilmFest October 15 – 25 presented the best of international Jewish cinema to Greater Clevelanders, attracting 2,500 household viewers and 100 drive-in attendees.

We served 2,033 active member households from our community.

2021 The 21st annual Cleveland Jewish Book Festival November 8 – April 20 drew 1,500 households who gained insights from acclaimed national, international and local authors during 20 virtual author events and three virtual cook-along demonstrations. January’s Tu Bishvat DriveThrough event in partnership with Jewish National Fund drew 150 community members who picked up gift bags containing saplings and planting supplies to celebrate our Jewish people’s festival of the trees. A May community Ice Cream Social-ish event for Shavuot, in partnership with PJ Library and jHUB, that included a socially distanced concert with Jesse Jukebox that attracted 125 family members.

Jewish Life and Culture programming attracted members and the broader Cleveland Jewish community to celebrate, explore, engage and learn to strengthen Jewish identity. These diverse programs had an estimated program reach of 1,500 community members. They included virtual events such as 11 holiday cook-along demonstrations for the general public and early childhood participants, a fall holiday scavenger hunt and virtual Chanukah candle lighting where partner organizations each hosted a night on The J’s Facebook page.

Lunch Plus hand delivered a total of 131,429 freshly prepared kosher meals to more than 60 seniors. Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, the program transitioned from a hot meal program to a home meal delivery effort fueled by dedicated volunteers from the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s Jewish Volunteer Network and The J’s staff volunteers. Families and individuals received financial assistance totaling $160,688 to defray the cost of J-Day Camps, Camp Wise and membership.
