Celebrating Our 70th Year
MANDEL JCC ANNUAL REPORT • 2017-18
MANDEL JCC ANNUAL REPORT • 2017-18
Seventy years ago, we were founded as a gathering place for Jewish families and new immigrants seeking culture, recreation, community and a place to call home. While our programs and facilities have undergone dramatic changes, The J’s commitment to building and strengthening our Jewish community remains dramatically unchanged. We are and have always been dedicated, first and foremost, to improving the quality of life for those in our community.
Our vision to build and strengthen our Jewish community shines through in 2018 just as it did in 1948. You can see this clearly whenever and wherever you are at The J – In a preschool class. At a pickup basketball game. In the pool. At an author’s lecture. In a canoe at J-Day Camps.
During a yoga class. On the ropes course at Camp Wise. On a high-tech treadmill. Over a hot kosher lunch at Lunch Plus congregate meal program. At a Playmakers Youth Theatre performance. At an intergenerational Passover Seder. And, of course, at a sold-out film screening. We are 11,000 members strong and annually we touch more than 15,000 community members, young and old, through our outstanding Arts and Culture offerings, Early Childhood programs, J-Day Camps, Camp Wise and our state of the art fitness and aquatics facilities. As you can see, our impact this past year was significant:
• Provided $415,000 in financial aid to 425 individuals and families to help defray the costs of J-Day Camps, Camp Wise and membership.
• Attracted record attendance of 10,000 at our signature arts and culture & Jewish Life events, Cleveland Jewish FilmFest and Cleveland Jewish Book Festival, which brought an incredible lineup of films and authors to Cleveland including, Chuck Todd, NBC News Political Director and moderator of Meet the Press.
• Celebrated The J’s Indoor Triathlon and Biathlon’s 11th sold out year, with 160 serious and casual athletes joining in for a spirited day of sportsmanship, friendly competition and fundraising. A record $50,000 was raised – and we introduced a new Kids Tri.
• Honored Peter and Aliki Rzepka, as this year’s J-Champions, for their dedication at Play at The J, our annual fundraiser which attracted
nearly 400 attendees and raised $110,000 to help support The J’s Financial Assistance Program.
• Nurtured 200 young children as they gained confidence, learned new skills, made new friends and celebrated Jewish holidays as part of our Early Childhood, Family Place and Tot Shabbat programs.
• Raised $12,000 to be used for Early Childhood staff development at Sing into Spring, our annual Early Childhood family event.
• Provided 179 seniors daily opportunities to be engaged over a hot kosher lunch at Lunch Plus, our congregate meal program. Housed at Warrensville Community Apartments in Cleveland Heights, we served over 12,000 meals six days a week and provided fitness classes, screenings, trips and video-conferencing.
• The J’s Aquatics staff provided private and group swim lesson to 1,375 babies, children and adults to teach them to swim and improve their stroke.
• The J’s Fitness staff helped 800 individuals reach their fitness goals with the guidance of our talented certified personal trainers. Attendance in our 80 weekly group fitness classes averaged 7,000 attendees per month. Plus 200 members improved their strength, posture and core at Pilates Reformer sessions.
• Invested more than $300,000 in state-of-the-art cardio, strength training and Pilates equipment to keep our members’ hearts racing.
• Provided more than 1,300 kids, ages 2 to grade 11, an amazing summer as they took part in one of our outstanding Playland, J-Day Camps and Camp Wise camps.
• Celebrated summer at Camp Wise with 125 participants at Women’s Weekend, Family Camp and Camp Chai, our one-week camp for adults with disabilities.
• Playmakers Youth Theatre presented Broadway’s favorite musicals and shows on the
Fairmount Temple stage. Nearly 200 student actors performed in five productions to appreciative audiences.
• Traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, last July, with our Cleveland delegation of 44 Jewish teen athletes who won 21 medals at the national JCC Maccabi Games – an international Olympicinspired competition.
• Provided 10 local Jewish artists the opportunity to study using Torah, text and discussion all as part of the Cleveland Jewish Arts and Culture Lab fellowship which culminated in an exhibition in May featuring their compelling mixed media works.
• With a $250,000 State of Ohio grant, gave Stonehill Auditorium a facelift with new lighting, room partitions and carpet along with sound attenuation panels for more flexible meeting space.
• Installed a brick enclosure on the front lawn for an improved Playland Day Camp environment. But 70 years is just the beginning. With the continued support and encouragement of our Board and lay leaders, our many funding partners, donors and volunteers, our talented staff and the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, we can accomplish so much more. With you, our members and stakeholders, by our side we will continue to bring people together to create opportunities for meaningful connections that enrich lives. And in doing so, we strengthen our entire community. Here’s to the next 70 exciting years!

An enduring value of Judaism is passing on spiritual knowledge and cultural traditions, l’dor v’dor, from one generation to another, to keep them alive. Making these connections between generations is personified in the lives of the Rocker family, whose ties to The J now extend to the fourth generation.
Only a handful of Clevelanders can lay claim to attending the ribbon cutting for the Mayfield JCC in 1960 and the Mandel JCC in 1986. Count Mikki Eigen Rocker part of that very small group.
Mikki, the daughter of Herman Eigen, the trailblazing executive director of the JCC, says
the opening of both facilities were among her father’s proudest moments.
In 1954 Herman Eigen was recruited by Mort Mandel, who was then Board President, to usher in an era of growth for the newly formed JCC. Using skills he acquired as director of the Buffalo JCC, Eigen combined the diverse
programs for Young Adults, Golden Agers, Drama and Camp Wise into one cohesive agency. He was also integrally involved in the fundraising and planning for the Mayfield JCC’s opening in 1960, and, 26 years later, its Beachwood successor.
“During his 22 years as The J’s Executive Director, my father saw the JCC as an encompassing umbrella organization whose mission was to create an atmosphere where Jews of all ages and observance were welcomed and encouraged to come together as a vibrant community,” says Mikki.
With her father as a role model, Mikki’s professional and personal path led to The J. As a teen she attended and served as a counselor, at Camp Wise in Painesville.
Joel Eigen, Mikki’s brother, also attended The J’s summer camps. Their mother, Sadie Eigen, a psychiatric social worker, started working in the late 1950s with Dr. Herman Hellerstein. Hellerstein, in collaboration with the Medical School of Western Reserve University, initiated his groundbreaking, heart-healthy exercise program at the Mayfield JCC.
When her children were little in the 1970s, Mikki was instrumental in the creation of The J’s Mom and Me classes and toddler gym classes, many of which continue today.
In 1984 Mikki joined the staff as Special Events Director and formed the Young Women’s Special Events Campaign Cabinet to help fundraise for the new Beachwood building. One of the highlights of that position was coordinating The J’s annual Fine Craft Festival, which ran from 1991-2001.
As Mikki and her husband Michael’s children grew up and married, The J was never far from their lives. All three Rocker children attended The J’s preschool programs and camps, and their son David’s wife, Becky Rocker worked as The J’s marketing manager.
Becky says even if her family did not have a personal connection to The J, she and her husband would have been drawn to the facility.
“The Mandel JCC has everything a young family like ours needs and is an integral part of our lives,” Becky says. “Our daughter Dylan attended preschool, as well as the Francine & Benson Pilloff Family Performing Arts Camp and Anisfield Day Camp. She took swim lessons and attends after school programs. Our twins are already socializing and playing with toddlers at Family Place. We look forward to sending them to The J’s Early Childhood preschool this fall.”
As a fitness enthusiast, Becky knows firsthand how exceptional The J’s fitness facilities and classes are. “The J has helped bring wellness into our lives and has also given us an opportunity to make some of our dearest friends,” she says. “Herman Eigen would have been proud to know his grandchildren and great grandchildren are thriving at his beloved Mandel JCC and that his legacy lives on.”

Scott and Shani Spiegle and their sons Sam, 17 and Jack, 15 are no exception. In fact, three generations of their family have been involved with The J.
“We are a Mandel JCC family,” says Scott. “Shani was an Anisfield camper in 1976 and
as a teen I spent a lot of time at The J. I still remember sleeping on bunk beds when my Fairmount Temple confirmation class had a Shabbaton in rooms at the back of the building, way before Stonehill Auditorium was built.”
Not only did Scott play and learn at The J, he worked here as well. His first job in
high school was in the Men’s Health Service, from 1987-1989, followed by a stint in the afterschool day care program. But it was at The J’s Anisfield Day Camp in Burton where he worked for eight years, from 19871994, that he made his mark. Scott was a counselor, supervisor and assistant director at J-Day Camps.
“Anisfield was a place where I could help kids make the most of their summer camp experience and promote Jewish values,” Scott says. “I have wonderful memories of that time. The positive impact of Jewish camp for kids remains important to me to this day.”
Shani also has wonderful memories of The J as a teen, especially when the facility opened in Beachwood. “My mom, Marsha Blond, who was so active at the Buffalo JCC where she grew up, saw the new Mandel JCC as a great resource for our family – and she was right. In fact, my mom continues to take adult education courses at The J and my uncle, Michael Miller, a documentary filmmaker, has been active on the Cleveland Jewish FilmFest Committee since he moved to Cleveland several years ago from California.”
Jewish identity. I’m looking forward to being a junior counselor at Anisfield this summer.”
Jack, an incoming Hawken freshman and a two-year Maccabi competitor, says, “I feel so lucky to have made really great friends at camp and Maccabi. I like going to The J in my free time to play basketball and hang out. The J has made me proud to be Jewish.”
As young parents, Shani and Scott found a place for their sons at The J. “When the boys were toddlers we went to Mom and Me classes and also spent lots of time in the Debra Ann November Kidspace,” says Shani, a community volunteer. “The J’s family activities were so fun and we loved hanging out there.”
As soon as Sam and Jack could carry a backpack and lug a duffel bag filled with camp gear, they were off to Anisfield Day Camp and then Camp Wise. As teens, they are part of the Cleveland delegation that attended the JCC Maccabi Games, an Olympic-inspired competition that attracts Jewish teens from all over the world. The summers spent at J-Day Camps, Camp Wise and the Maccabi Games have had a life-defining effect on both boys.
“My closest friends are the people I met at Camp Wise and at Maccabi, “says Sam, who will be a senior at Hawken in the fall. “Being so connected to The J through camp, BBYO, and three Maccabi games, has strengthened my
Because of what the Mandel JCC has meant to their family, Scott and Shani are generous philanthropic supporters. Scott, a financial advisor, serves as a member of The J’s Board of Trustees, and Executive Committee, was chair of the J-Day Camps Committee and is currently chair of the Development and Maccabi Committees. He has also competed in two Mandel JCC Indoor Triathlons, and along with Shani, attends screenings and author events at the Cleveland Jewish FilmFest and Book Festival.
Shani and Scott agree their sons have reaped countless benefits from The J, including the chance to meet kids from different schools and suburbs. “Going to a small school like Hawken I’m so happy The J has helped our sons expand their circle of friends,” says Shani. “The Mandel JCC has always made us feel a welcome part of our vibrant and strong Jewish community. There is no question that l’dor v’dor, from generation to generation, our entire extended family has been greatly enriched by our involvement with The J.”

By 1932, eastward movement of the Jewish community prompted construction of a new building at Kinsman and East 135th Street. Settlement work continued here while new programs began to serve an increasingly American-born Jewish population. Extensions of this program followed at East 105th Street, Superior Avenue and Arlington at East 123rd Street.
By the end of WWII, four Jewish agencies – the Council Educational Alliance, Camp Wise, the Jewish Young Adult Bureau and the Cultural Division of the Jewish Community Council – were serving the community in many similar ways. They joined forces in 1948, as the Jewish Community Center of Cleveland.
In 1948, the year that heralded the birth of the State of Israel, another beginning took place in Cleveland. That year the Jewish Community Center of Cleveland was created by the merger of four organizations.
The JCC, having no permanent home, ran its programs in converted homes, basements, warehouses and commercial properties.
