Annual Report

2015-2016

message from Alan Semel and Michael Hyman

The reasons people come to The J are countless. Parents want their children to be safe, healthy and learn Jewish values. Kids want to have fun and make new friends. Adults and seniors want to live healthier, more meaningful lives. All can find a home here and this is the beauty of our Mandel JCC.

We served more than 11,000 members this past year, and touched an additional 10,000 community members, young and old, through our awardwinning fitness and aquatics programs, arts and culture programs, outstanding preschool, J-Day Camps and nationally recognized Camp Wise, and Lunch Plus congregate meal program. This impact has a multiplier effect and strengthens our community far greater than simple math might suggest.

“Who is honored? The one who gives honor to others.”

(Talmud – Pirke Avot 4:1) Simeon Ben Zoma, Second Century Biblical Scholar

This past year we took this guidance to heart and honored three longtime volunteers for their outstanding leadership. Deedra Dolin, Norm Friedman and Keith Polster were recognized at our Play at The J event for their visionary leadership and efforts on behalf of three stellar programs –Cleveland Jewish Book Festival, Cleveland Jewish FilmFest and the Indoor Biathlon & Triathlon, respectively. Nearly 400 attended this inaugural event that raised $120,000 for The J’s financial assistance program that serves more than 400 individuals and families.

HELPING PEOPLE AT EVERY STAGE OF LIFE

We’re honored to help people of all ages and at every stage of life. And we are also honored to be recognized for our work. This past year:

• The Beachwood Chamber of Commerce recognized The J with its Civic Organization of the Year award for “demonstrating on-going outreach efforts that have shown outstanding civic commitment and social responsibility.”

• The State of Ohio recognized our Early Childhood program and J-Kids Club afterschool program with a Five Star Rating from Step Up To Quality, Ohio’s Early Childhood Quality Rating System. Only a small number of programs who consistently exceed the highest standards of early care and education earn this distinguished honor. This achievement was made possible due to the outstanding efforts of our dedicated staff and the ongoing support of our parent community.

• Cleveland Magazine Best of the East publication recognized The J as Best Fitness Center five years in a row. They recognized Playmakers Youth Theatre as Best Theater/ Dance Instruction three years in a row and the Indoor Triathlon and Biathlon was honored as Best Charity Race.

This past summer 1,400 youth and teens had amazing experiences at one of our six day camp programs or at Camp Wise, our nationally recognized overnight camp. And this summer J-Day Campers at Halle Park in Burton have something special to splash about. They will enjoy countless hours of fun in our brand new Debra Ann November Aquatics Center complete with a 25 meter Jr. Olympic sized pool featuring two slides and spray ground elements. Iris November and her late husband, Mort, longtime community philanthropists, made a lead gift for the construction of the new aquatics center. Named in memory of their late daughter, this generous gift comes from a grant made from the Phyllis and Debra Ann November Children’s Fund, a supporting foundation of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland.

Our signature Arts and Culture events, Cleveland Jewish FilmFest and Cleveland Jewish Book Festival enjoyed record-breaking attendance. They brought to Cleveland an outstanding selection of films and introduced us to some of the country’s most fascinating authors. This year we also introduced The J Show which gave local artists the opportunity to compete and showcase their works. Over 90 artists submitted entries and 47 artists were selected to be included in an exciting exhibition of mixed media.

Playmakers Youth Theatre enjoyed record-breaking cast sizes and audiences and 12 teens traveled to Israel for a unique theatre-focused experience. Sheri Gross, our Playmakers Director, took her final curtain call in June after giving our kids 20 years of extraordinary theater experiences. Sheri and Linda Joynt, Playmakers’ gifted costume designer, were honored after the final performance of Little Shop of Horrors

BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER

What best defines The J is that we bring people together and create opportunities for meaningful connections that enrich lives. These connections make us a strong Jewish community center and an even stronger community. In the next few pages, you’ll meet a wonderful and diverse group of people –individuals and families whose lives have all been touched and enhanced by being part of our Mandel JCC.

As you read through the following pages you can see it’s been a very busy and successful year at The J. This is due, in large part, to the exceptional efforts of our Board of Trustees, our generous donors, funding partners and volunteers and our dedicated staff. We also thank the Jewish Federation of Cleveland for their unwavering support. And of course, we thank you, our members. Your participation and enthusiasm have truly helped to make this year a special one. It’s been an honor to serve you.

Immersion Hebrew

Josh Akrish’s mother and maternal grandparents are Israeli-born and his father and paternal grandparents speak Hebrew fluently. Still, the energetic first-grader knew very little Hebrew before attending the Hebrew Immersion Program at the Mandel JCC’s Anisfield Day Camp last summer.

“I was excited about learning Hebrew because I wanted to catch up with Mommy,” Josh said, with a sly grin. “I also liked swimming, sports, drama and the guy who brought animals to camp. It was fun.”

Now entering its second year, the Hebrew Immersion Program includes all of Anisfield’s traditional day camp activities – such as boating, swimming, sports, arts and crafts, music, drama and Shabbat celebrations – and adds a special twist: From the very first day, Israeli madrichim (counselors) conduct all activities in Hebrew. They rely on hand gestures, facial expressions, pictures, objects and a great deal of repetition to relay the meaning of their words, so no prior knowledge of Hebrew is required.

Originally designed for youngsters in

“ THIS IS TRULY A PLACE WHERE WE ALL FEEL A STRONG CONNECTION.”

kindergarten and first grade, this summer’s program will expand to include children entering second and third grade.

“These are great ages for learning a foreign language because the kids are like sponges,” said Israeli-born Iris Granot, the program’s director and a preschool teacher at Gross Schechter Day School. “At the beginning, they know very few words. By the end of camp, they’re using more and more Hebrew and, as we walk around camp, the other Anisfield campers begin picking up Hebrew words, too.”

“That’s one of the neat things about the program – the use of Hebrew words has spread throughout the camp environment,” Iris added.

Before Josh attended the Hebrew Immersion program, the adults in his family used to speak Hebrew when they didn’t want him to know what they were saying.

“One day I realized, ‘Oh boy, we better be careful! He understands what we’re saying,’” said Josh’s mom, Karen, who adds her son’s developing command of Hebrew is a blessing. “The grandparents are so happy.

MANDEL JCC ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 4

Now they can connect with him on so many different levels and tell him their stories about Israel – all in Hebrew.” Josh is not the only family member with a connection to The J. Josh’s grandmother, Edna Akrish, has been a longtime member of The J and serves on its Cleveland Jewish FilmFest and Jewish Book Festival committees.

“More than 700 kids will spend the summer with us at one of our six camps which includes Anisfield Day Camp at Halle Park in Burton,” said Aaron Tevlowitz, Day Camp and Children’s Services Director.

“All of our camps are inclusive and strive to make every child feel welcome and important. While not all of our camps teach conversational Hebrew, they all promote

Jewish identity, teamwork and encourage Jewish values such as helping others, respecting nature and the importance of tzedakah (charity.)”

Josh’s participation in the program, which he will attend again this summer, has motivated the entire family to speak Hebrew more frequently at home. Even Josh’s twoyear-old brother, Liam, is picking up new words.

“We’re so happy with the program and with The J,” said Karen “Our family is involved in so many of The J’s programs – this is truly a place where we all feel a strong connection.”

The Hebrew Immersion Program is made possible by the support and guidance of the Foundation for Jewish Camp, the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland and the generous support of donors in our community .

Paging Judy& andrew Green

If the Jews are the people of the book –then Andrew and Judy Green are the people of the Book Festival.

For the past 16 years the Greens have been the driving force behind the Mandel JCC Cleveland Jewish Book Festival sponsored by The Henry and Eugenia Green Family Foundation. This yearly event has attracted hundreds of esteemed, nationally recognized Jewish authors and thousands of book-loving attendees.

“The festival is extremely rewarding for us as a couple,” says Andrew, an industrial engineer. “My parents, Eugenia and Henry enjoyed the cultural arts, and this festival, so ably coordinated by Julie Frayman, is something they would have applauded. This is a perfect fit for the philanthropic efforts of the Eugenia and Henry Green Family Foundation.”

Henry and Eugenia‘s life story could itself be a novel. The couple met and fell in love in their native Warsaw, Poland. In 1938, at age 27, Henry fled anti-Semitism in Warsaw and with little money in his pocket. He emigrated

“OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE AND HELP AS MANY PEOPLE AS WE CAN ALONG THE WAY.”

to Cochibamba, Bolivia, at a time when not much was known about the country but his friends did warn him of cannibals. Because of his mechanical training in Poland he was sent to work in the mines in Potosi, Bolivia, at 14,000 ft, a tin-mining town. In 1939 Eugenia barely escaped Warsaw and after a six-week journey in risky waters joined Henry in Bolivia, where the couple married, worked and had their son Andrew.

In 1948 the Greens, seeking a better life for their young son, moved to Cleveland where Henry got a menial job. He eventually was hired at Consolidated Iron and Steel.

Through their hard work and incredible business acumen Henry and Eugenia founded Martin Hydraulics in 1955 and later co-founded Cuyahoga Molded Plastics.

As the couple’s success grew, so did their commitment towards philanthropy. Among their many charitable efforts was the Workmen’s Circle and the Mayfield JCC’s Halle Theatre.

“Andrew’s parents had three very distinct chapters in their lives,” marvels Judy. “Despite

MANDEL JCC ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 6

all odds they were a true American success story, and never lost their sense of humor or their desire to help others. My father-in-law had the heart of the artist and the brain of an engineer. And my beautiful mother-inlaw was the consummate hostess and was extremely cultured and artistic.”

Both Judy and Andrew have followed Henry and Eugenia’s philanthropic lead. “Our goal is to make the world a better place and help as many people as we can along the way,” says Andrew. “I see the good in everyone and enjoy doing what I can to help people reach their potential.”

Judy, a retired nurse and avid gardener, enjoys the fact that the book festival brings so many interesting authors to town and

is also a stimulating community event. She was impressed by a comment made by a 2014 book festival participant, June Hersh, author of Recipes Remembered A Celebration of Survival, whose family owned a successful lighting company. “She said the reason she was donating funds to worthy organizations was because her family had done well, and now it was time to do good. That message hit home and is why we enjoy supporting the Book Festival so much.”

Julie Frayman is grateful for the Green’s support. “It is a joy to collaborate with Andrew and Judy,” she says. “Their enthusiasm for the work we are doing is contagious and their efforts on behalf of our community speaks – volumes.

Building Blocks

Last year when Danielle and Jonathan Eisenberg made the leap from Chicago back to their hometown one of the couple’s first stops was the Mandel JCC.

“With three preschool aged children, we immediately sought out a top-notch Jewish preschool experience, and, without question, The J’s preschool and aftercare program met our expectations and more,” says Danielle.

All the couple has to do is look into the smiling, eager faces of their five-year-old twins Solomon and Levi, and two-year-old daughter Selah each morning as they head off to school to know they made the right choice.

“My kids are excited to go to The J each morning, and, when I pick them up they often want to stay and play with their buddies,” says Danielle. “They have made some wonderful friends here and they adore their teachers and constantly talk about them at home.”

Danielle understands the appeal The J preschool has for her children and their classmates. “Along with bright, kid-friendly

”OUR FAMILY HAS FOUND A LOVING COMMUNITY HERE AND WE NOW CONSIDER THE J HOME.”

classrooms, the preschoolers can access other areas of the multi-faceted facility,” she says. “My children enjoy the swimming pool, the Adelstein Children’s Outdoor Garden and the large gym. On Shabbat and holidays just like the adult members who come in the door, they feel fully integrated into the larger Mandel JCC community.”

“The Mandel JCC Early Childhood program is committed to excellence and we are proud to have received a Five Star Step-Up-To-Quality Rating, the highest honor awarded from the State of Ohio to early learning and development programs,” said Joan Morgenstern, Director of Early Childhood. “Our teachers work hard to create learning environments that spark children’s wonder and creativity and build confidence and intellectual skills.

Our families are partners in the work that we do to build a strong sense of Jewish community and promote the well-being of every child we serve,” she continued.

The expert teaching staff receives high praise from Danielle. “When we initially visited the school I was impressed with the

MANDEL JCC ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 8

warmth, enthusiasm and competence of the teaching staff, and as a trans-racial family, with the diversity reflected in the school population,” she says. “Each child is treated individually and encouraged to reach his or her potential. We have seen our children grow socially, emotionally and intellectually here at The J.”

Having returned to Cleveland after many years away both Danielle and Jonathan agree the Mandel JCC preschool

has been a good segue to help them reintegrate into the Cleveland community. “My husband and I have formed wonderful friendships that extend well beyond the preschool day,” says Danielle. “We know these friendships will continue in the coming years. Moving back to Cleveland and choosing The J for preschool was the best decision we could have made. Our family has found a loving community here and we now consider The J home.”

Wise Kids

Zach Chylla knows he has arrived at the “Home of Happiness” the minute he steps off the bus at the Mandel JCC’s Camp Wise and is greeted by banners and cheering staff.

“I love seeing all my friends and the counselors,” said Zach, 15, who will be in the Solel village this summer. “My closest friends are from Camp Wise. We’ve all been together since Chalutzim (grade 4), so we have a strong brotherhood.”

Zach and his 13-year-old sister, Mallory, who will be in the Noar village this summer, say every activity at the overnight camp is filled with ruach (spirit) – whether villages try to “out-chant” each other in the dining hall, teams compete in the muchanticipated Maccabiah Games, friends celebrate a bunkmate’s birthday or the entire camp community ushers in Shabbat with songs and joyful prayer.

“It makes the camp more connected and unites everyone,” Mallory said.

Zach and Mallory’s mom, Heidi Chylla, knows her children are in good hands

“ BEING JEWISH MEANS BEING PART OF A LARGER COMMUNITY WITH A SHARED HISTORY.”

at Camp Wise. “We’ve seen the positive impact Camp Wise has had on our kids and we trust the staff,” said Heidi, whose husband Loren serves on The J’s board of directors. “We continue to be impressed with the interest and effort the camp staff has shown to understand each child’s needs and do whatever is necessary to ensure all of the kids have a safe and awesome camp experience. Each summer, our children learn fantastic life skills that can’t be taught in a book or a classroom.”

Camp Wise has also strengthened the Chyllas’ Jewish identity. Before attending Camp Wise, the siblings admit, their occasional synagogue attendance wasn’t as meaningful. Now, Zach enjoys leading Shabbat services with friends and Mallory understands that being Jewish means being part of a larger community with a shared history.

“Jewish values drive every program, experience and interaction at Camp Wise. In addition to participating in Shabbat, campers find their own connection and

MANDEL JCC ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 10

develop their own relationship with Judaism through all activities in camp.,” said Rachel Felber, Interim Director.

“Camp activities provide a context in which campers form lifelong friendships with fellow campers and staff. It’s no wonder that these strong Jewish ties and connections stay with a camper long after they have left Camp Wise.”

In addition to strengthening their Jewish identity, campers learn new skills and gain confidence and independence at the award-winning overnight camp, located on 325 acres in Chardon. While there, kids unplug from technology – no cell phones allowed! – to participate in chugim (activities), such as swimming, kayaking, jet skiing, horseback riding,

archery, arts and crafts, music, yoga and overnight trips.

Camp Wise’s activities are allencompassing, so Zach and Mallory, don’t miss being constantly “plugged in” like they are at home.

“When you go through the day at camp, you don’t have time to be on your cell phone – and you don’t want to be,” Zach said. “You learn there’s so much more to do and experience.”

As plugged-in parents this is something Loren and Heidi really appreciate and value about overnight camp. At Camp Wise they know their kids are making “social connections” that will last long after camp is over. Who could ask for anything s’more?

Dream Team

Talent, grit and dedicated coaches certainly play a role in an ice skater’s success. Competitive skater Katie McBeath also credits someone most people might not expect: Mandel JCC personal trainer Jennifer Brand.

Before working with Jennifer, Katie, then 15, competed in the Junior National Championship. But chronic back and hip pain compromised her skating and sent her to a physical therapist, who told her she must strengthen her back to prevent future injuries.

“The J was close to school and my mom’s work, so my family joined, my mom looked for a personal trainer for me there and she liked Jennifer,” Katie said. “My first goal was to keep my back strong, but as the years progressed, I wanted to get strong enough in my off-ice exercises to improve my on-ice skills.”

Katie’s mom’s instincts about Jennifer were on point. Katie, now 21 and a fulltime psychology student at Cuyahoga Community College, continues weekly

“ KATIE, LIKE SO MANY OF OUR MEMBERS, HAS REALLY BENEFITED FROM WORKING WITH A PERSONAL TRAINER.”

half-hour sessions with Jennifer that include cardio, strength and stretching exercises. Jennifer is so invested in Katie’s success that she took the time to discuss Katie’s technical performance with her skating coach. As a result, Jennifer added balance, stability and agility training to Katie’s routine to help with landings and transitions in the rink.

“We have greatly reduced the risk of injury and minimized her falls,” said Jennifer, who designs workouts for Katie to do on her own between personal training sessions and leaves them for her in a dedicated file cabinet in The J’s fitness center. “She is a highly disciplined and dedicated individual and will do whatever needs to be done to achieve her goals. Her ultimate goal is to make it into the International Selection Pool so she could have a chance in the USA international trials.”

“Katie, like so many of our members, has really benefited from working with a personal trainer,” said Rich Zatta, Fitness

MANDEL JCC ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 12

Center and Personal Training Manager.

“Our talented team of certified personal trainers work with people of all ages and fitness abilities to motivate and help them reach their goals. Whether the goal is as “Olympic-sized” as Katie’s or a more down to earth one, such as getting fit and losing weight, our trainers help members succeed. “

Katie’s skating resume is already impressive. She finished second at the

2014 U.S. Collegiate Figure Skating Championships and 18th and 13th in the 2015 and 2016 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, respectively.

After six years of working together, Jennifer is more than a personal trainer to Katie; she is a mentor and friend. Jennifer attends some of Katie’s competitions and has become one of her biggest cheerleaders. With Jennifer’s support, Katie’s assured she’s never skating on thin ice.

Holding CourT

At nearly 90 years old Marvin Schinagle is a man in motion.

Seven days a week the Beachwood resident pulls up to the Mandel JCC parking lot at 7:45 am sharp to either play racquetball with his fellow “racqueteers” or work out in the gym.

“About 50 years ago I began playing racquetball at the old Mayfield JCC and have been smashing the ball three times a week ever since,” says Marvin. “Over the years I have played with lots of guys, many of whom were older than me. Now, I’m the oldest guy on the court, but not the slowest and my competitive instincts are as strong as ever. I like to win.”

Pointing to his heart and head Marvin says racquetball, along with regular exercise, keeps his cardiovascular system and mind strong and helps his eye-hand coordination. “You have to stay sharp, agile and focused when you are playing the game,” he says. “Plus when you get on

at 90

“ WHEN YOU SEE SOMETHING WORKING RIGHT YOU WANT TO DO YOUR PART TO KEEP IT GOING.”

the court and hit a good shot you feel a little happier.”

A Cleveland native known for wearing red socks, even to his daughter’s wedding, Marvin enjoys the ready camaraderie of his fellow racquetball players including Daniel Roberts, Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Emanu El in Solon.

“Everybody I know would dream of being Marvin Schinagle, red socks and all,” says Rabbi Roberts. “He is healthy, never misses a day at The J, and knows how to make the most of his life.”

When Marvin is not at The J he can be found on Lake Erie on his sailboat “Sinbad”, often with family members aboard, including his wife Maxine, their three children and seven grandchildren.

Being a Mandel JCC regular gives Marvin a strong sense of what The J is all about. “This is such a great place for people of all ages,” he says. “There is something here for everyone. There is

MANDEL JCC ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 14

nothing else like it around and in my opinion The J is the best thing going.”

The feeling is mutual, according to Karen Hiller, The J’s Development Director. “Marvin’s commitment to fitness and good health is inspiring. And his tzedakah (charity) and generosity to The J and other organizations around Cleveland serve as an example for all of us.”

It is because of his strong support of the Mandel JCC that Marvin, the founder of Magnus Auto Parts, decided to make a generous philanthropic gift to The J last year. “What is money for, but to give to others – you can’t eat it, it doesn’t taste good,” he says with a smile. “When you see something working right you want to do your part to keep it going.”

Awesome Annies

You can bet your bottom dollar that Lexi Cowan and Ranit Drozhinskiy are two of the most adorable Annie’s that ever belted out “Tomorrow.”

Both girls share blue eyes, beguiling smiles and the starring role in the Mandel JCC Playmakers Youth Theatre production of the Tony-award winning musical Annie Jr. this past winter.

“When I got the part of Annie I started jumping up and down and called all my relatives,” enthuses 11-year old Ranit, a Solon Orchard Middle School student. “My mom says I could hum Russian lullabies before I could talk, so having a role like this is a dream come true.”

Laurel School 4th grader Lexi Cowan’s enthusiasm for the theater began at the age of 2 ½ when she was a model for a children’s fashion show fundraiser. Lexi is serious about pursuing a career in theater and has already appeared in commercials and films.

“Playing Annie at Playmakers is a part I had been longing to play,” says Lexi, 10.

”AT THIS BEAUTIFUL, HUGE MANDEL JCC CHILDREN CAN MEET, PLAY, PERFORM AND LEARN TOGETHER.

“Even before I was cast I knew all the songs. And despite the itchy red wig, it was an amazing experience. I liked working in a production where everyone respected and cheered each other on.”

Playmakers Youth Theatre, under the direction of the very talented Rachel Zake, is an award-winning, dynamic Jewish youth theatre program that emphasizes self-confidence, creativity, teamwork and an appreciation for the performing arts among its young performers. In addition to welcoming children of all levels of talent, Playmakers is an inclusive youth theater program that is also wonderfully accessible and rewarding for children and youth with disabilities or physical limitations.

“Having this opportunity to follow in Sheri Gross’ (former Playmakers Director) footsteps is a dream come true,” said Rachel Zake, Director of Playmakers. “I have been a part of the Playmakers family nearly all my life and am excited to have this opportunity to teach, mentor and inspire young kids and teens just as Sheri did for me.“

MANDEL JCC ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 16

“Life has a way of coming full-circle,” notes Lexi’s mom, Erica. “Back in the day Sheri Gross, Rachel Zake and I performed in Fiddler on the Roof at the Mayfield JCC Halle Theatre, and now here is Lexi working with Sheri and Rachel. Some of my best memories are of my own youth theater experience. No matter your ability, there is always a place for you and so many life lessons are learned at Playmakers.”

Olga, Ranit’s mom, who moved to Cleveland from the former Soviet Union

twenty years ago, still marvels at all the Mandel JCC has to offer. “When I was growing up in my town of Odessa, we were not allowed to practice Judaism and there was anti-Semitism everywhere,” she says. “Here at this beautiful, huge Mandel JCC children can meet, play, perform and learn together. They are also encouraged and proud to be part of the greater Jewish community which, like Playmakers, remains a blessing for our family.”

Lunch Plus

At age 99, Mayfield Heights resident Ruth Goldstein is as sharp and energetic as someone half her age.

“Coming here keeps me living so long,” she said of the Mandel JCC’s Lunch Plus program at the Warrensville Community Apartments in Cleveland Heights. “The food is good, but more than that, it gives me something to do and keeps me on a regular routine. It makes me want to get up in the morning.”

Before she began attending Lunch Plus about five years ago, Ruth, who lives alone, admits she used to sleep in late, have a cup of coffee and perhaps half a roll, skip lunch and eat one modest meal around 4:00 in the afternoon. She knows it wasn’t a healthy way to live.

Now, Ruth takes advantage of free transportation to and from Lunch Plus. Upon arrival, she either takes an exercise class or schmoozes over coffee with friends before enjoying a kosher lunch and participating in the day’s planned activity.

“ IT’S LIKE COMING HOME TO FAMILY AND YOU NEVER FEEL ALONE.”

“This is heaven for me,” she said. Ruth’s words bring a smile to the face of program supervisor Yolanda Nixon.

“Our goal is to reduce isolation in the senior population by providing programming and meals,” she said. “Many of them have no family in town or they’ve outlived their loved ones, so we give them a sense of self. And for some, this may be the only meal of the day.”

Annually the program serves more than 12,000 nutritionally balanced hot kosher meals to nearly 150 elderly adults ages 60 or older six days a week, including Sundays. The lunches, prepared by Menorah Park, meet the daily nutritional requirements for seniors. Intentionally served in large portions, they include an entrée, starch, bread, vegetable and fruit. There is a suggested donation of $1.50, but no one is ever turned away because of the inability to pay. Every three months, Menorah Park’s dietitian meets with participants to get their feedback so he can tailor future menus to their preferences.

MANDEL JCC ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 18

Nourishing mind and spirit is just as important as nourishing the body, so Lunch Plus offers an array of programming following lunch. Guest speakers often lead discussions on politics, health and nutrition, living wills, Jewish life, Cleveland history and other topics. Activities may include bingo, live entertainment, shopping, or field trips to the Maltz Museum, Cleveland Orchestra or other venues.

Ruth, who attends five days a week, said Lunch Plus provides her with so much more than a hot lunch.

“We talk about anything and everything. It’s like coming home to family and you never feel alone,” she said.

Lunch Plus funding is provided by: Cuyahoga County Department of Senior and Adult Service, Jewish Federation of Cleveland, Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging, Mandel Jewish Community Center
