Telling Our Story

The Mandel JCC knows about the power of stories. We touch the lives of thousands of individuals and families every year and with each encounter a new story begins.

So many in our community have a personal story to tell about how The J has helped to shape their children’s development, strengthened their families, assisted their aging parents or enriched their lives. With nearly 11,000 members and an additional 10,000 community members that we touch each year, it is no mystery why we have so many compelling stories to share.

A Message from Arthur Weisman & Michael Hyman

These stories add up exponentially and demonstrate how the Mandel JCC achieves its mission to strengthen our community, one person – one story – at a time.

As you can see there is poetry in our numbers:

• One story worth noting is, that thanks to the generosity of so many, this past year our annual fund raised more than $85,000, a record number of dollars from a record number of donors.

• At our Lunch Plus congregate meal program, more often than not, it is our kind and caring staff that can be found listening to cherished stories from decades past. With 12,000 meals served to 150 senior adults annually, there is no shortage of memories to retell.

• One enchanted tale we don’t mind reading aloud again and again is that of Sing Into Spring, our annual Early Childhood fundraiser. A record $20,000 was raised thanks to the dedicated and talented Parent Committee.

• Bringing Broadway’s beloved stories and songs to the Fairmount Temple stage is where Playmakers Youth Theatre shines. With its mighty casts of more than 400 student actors performing to audiences of 6,000 annually, this story gets a standing ovation.

• Folktales, folklore and fables – sometimes scary, sometimes not – are narrated and shared with marshmallows, around a glowing campfire at both J-Day Camps and Camp Wise overnight camp. With 1,500 children and teens attending one or more of our six camps, that’s a lot stories – and marshmallows – devoured.

• Stories that illustrate children overcoming their fear of water and learning to swim and adults overcoming their fear of fitness and getting strong, serve as inspiration for us all.

The J’s aquatics and fitness staff helped more than 1,500 children and adults learn to swim and improve their stroke and 800 individuals work out with a personal trainer. Attendance in group fitness classes averaged 7,000 participants each month.

• This year, due to successful partnerships with The Agnon School and Beachwood and Orange School Districts, J Kids Club after school care enrollment grew by 60%.

• Competing and achieving one’s personal best is one story that never grows old. This year the Indoor Triathlon & Biathlon attracted 135 serious and casual athletes and raised a record $36,000.

ortant they have to be told.” e and Beyond, speaking at the Cleveland Jewish FilmFest

• The Cleveland Jewish FilmFest entertained us with stories unfolding on the silver screen. This year we screened 26 films and had more than 5,000 attendees – a record number – made all the more special with an appearance by Above and Beyond producer, Nancy Spielberg, whose brother knows a thing or two about storytelling.

• And of course our Cleveland Jewish Book Festival brought some of the country’s master storytellers to Cleveland, including New York Times bestselling authors Faye, Jonathan, and Jesse Kellerman, who delighted a sold-out opening night audience.

• No story of The J is complete that doesn’t include the support we were able to give to individuals and families in need in our community. We provided $402,000 in scholarships to 400 families to help defray the costs of camp, childcare and membership.

This year the Mandel JCC story was a special one, and it took the partnership of a strong board, engaged members, generous donors, foundations and corporations, tireless volunteers and dedicated staff to make it happen. We also acknowledge the critical role of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland to The J’s success and thank them for their unwavering support.

While this year was filled with many exciting beginnings, we also have one ending. After three successful years, Art Weisman, our Board President, is putting down the gavel. Rest assured, that we have no intention of letting Art close the book, though, and look forward to seeing him continue to play an active role at The J.

The next chapter of our story promises to be just as exciting. We’re making a splash in 2016 with the launch of an Anisfield Day

Camp Pool Capital Campaign. Our goal is to raise one million dollars to replace our 50-yearold pool at our Anisfield site in Burton, Ohio. Mort and Iris November, long time community philanthropists, have made a generous lead gift and in recognition, the facility will be named the Debra Ann November Aquatics Center, in memory of their late daughter. We anticipate the pool will be ready to open by the summer of 2016.

Also this upcoming summer, Anisfield Day Camp is presenting an immersive 8-week conversational Hebrew language experience for children entering kindergarten and first grade. We’re proud to be one of only six programs in North America piloting this innovative program. In closing, as you read through our annual report you’ll discover the power of a good story. These are the stories that define us and creating stories like these is why we are here. This annual report is our way of telling our story and we look forward to telling yours.

Moving to a new city, finding a new home, starting new jobs and settling into a new community is stressful by anyone’s measure. Now add to the equation, finding care for two-year-old twins and you get an idea of what Drs. Ilyssa and Josh Gordon faced when they relocated to Cleveland in 2012 to accept positions at the Cleveland Clinic. Finding a quality child care program was uppermost on their minds.

The Gordons are dedicated to raising Adina and Noah with strong Jewish values. They chose the Mandel JCC’s Early Childhood program because they were familiar with its stellar reputation.

“The J definitely helped with our move from Chicago to Cleveland because we immediately realized it was a great place for our family to be,” Ilyssa said. ”Early Childhood Director, Joan Morgenstern, is so knowledgeable and dedicated to the school that it flows down to the teachers and kids. The teachers do so much more than watch my kids all day. They bring an active learning approach to the classroom.”

“The J... exceeded
We couldn’t have asked for a better, more
4

During the twins’ first year at The J, Ilyssa was particularly impressed with the teachers’ organized, calm and thoughtful approach to caring for and educating the children. The teachers assured the Gordons that their children would be potty-trained by the end of the school year – and they were.

“The teachers are so used to these developmental stages and are able to reassure parents that the kids are on track,” Ilyssa said. “It makes our lives so much easier. Josh and I can go to work without worrying about our children. We know they are learning and being taken care of in a wonderful, nurturing setting all day long.”

of our expectations.

The twins, who are now five-years-old and in Pre-K, have enjoyed celebrating Shabbat and Jewish holidays, learning letters and numbers, creating art, making friends, and participating in fitness and swimming classes.

“We are committed to excellence in early care and education, but also work hard to create a sense of Jewish community and wellbeing for our families,” Joan Morgenstern said. “We work in partnership with parents and lead by example to make sure each child thrives and grows during their time with us.”

A Moving Experience

The Gordons say connecting with other preschool families – whether during school programs or outside of The J – has been one of the most important benefits of being a part of The J’s Early Childhood community. It has also helped connect them to the Cleveland Jewish community as well.

The Gordon twins will soon be “graduating” and heading off to kindergarten. And their parents know they are well-prepared.

“The J’s Early Childhood program exceeded all of our expectations,” Ilyssa said. “We couldn’t have asked for a better, more caring environment for our children.”

Ben and Ann Stallsmith hail from Mansfield, a small community south of Cleveland with just one synagogue, so it might be surprising to learn their connection to the Mandel JCC’s Camp Wise spans three generations. Both their mother and grandmother were campers and counselors at the nationally recognized overnight camp whose wide-ranging activities are structured around Jewish values.

“Going to Camp Wise opened the door to make Jewish friends and be part of a larger Jewish community that I didn’t realize was out

there,” said Ben, who first attended the camp in 2001 when he was 10 years old and now, at age 24, serves as a Camp Wise supervisor.

“I can’t begin to describe the impact attending Camp Wise has had on me. I met so many of my closest friends and I got to do and experience so many new things at camp,” Ben continued. “Serving as an SIT and counselor at Camp Wise instilled in me confidence and leadership skills that have helped me in nearly every area of my life. Camp Wise really has shaped me as a Jew and an individual.”

“Camp Wise really has shaped
6

“I learned from working with teens that I probably wanted to do that for the rest of my life,” added Ben. So it’s only fitting that, during the rest of the year, Ben teaches social studies to middle-school students at The Agnon School.

That gratifies Camp Wise Director, Sean Morgan. He and his talented staff, many of whom, like Ben, are former campers themselves, make sure that every activity is infused with ruach (spirit) and reflects Jewish ideals. “In everything we do, campers gain a sense of their own Jewish identity that carries with them beyond camp and back into their own

community,” he said, pointing out that the Camp Wise experience leads many campers to join BBYO and get involved in their synagogues or volunteer in the community.

Wise Siblings

Camp Wise, the overnight camp of the Mandel JCC, is located in Chardon on 325 beautiful acres and serves nearly 700 campers each summer. Camp Wise has received national recognition for innovation and excellence. Campers have a chance to learn new skills, gain confidence and independence through the wide range of activities Camp Wise offers, including: swimming, kayaking, jet skiing, horseback riding, climbing wall, archery, arts and crafts and music to name just a few.

Ann, Ben’s 13-year-old sister, attends a temple where she has the distinction of being the oldest student in her Sunday school and the only one her age in her classroom. Ann echoes her brother’s enthusiasm for camp.

“Camp Wise is a place where I can try so many new things and have fun doing them because I am surrounded by friends I love and awesome counselors,” said Ann, who will be attending camp for the fifth year this summer. “I also feel closer to my religion. I love the Shabbat services. Almost everything about camp makes my connection to Judaism and my determination to maintain Jewish values even stronger than it is at home.”

Even though there’s an 11 year age difference, there’s no divide when it comes to how they feel about Camp Wise. Ben and Ann unanimously agree Camp Wise really is their “Home of Happiness.”

If all roads lead to the Mandel JCC, then long-time supporters Cindy and Keith Polster have helped pave the way. The Polsters’ hands-on involvement with Mandel JCC programs and their quiet but meaningful philanthropy is based on the family’s personal connection to The J.

“Ever since I was a kid, The J has been an important part of my life. I grew up going to the Mayfield JCC where I played basketball and learned to swim,” said Keith. “It was also the first place that I encountered a running track,” he added.

“The J was a magnet for children my age. While I was raised in Beachwood it was at The J where I made friends with kids from other suburbs and that was very enriching for me. In addition, my grandfather worked at the JCC in Youngstown, and I have fond memories of time spent there with my brother and sister,” Keith continued.

Understanding that The J is an important part of Jewish life in Cleveland, the Polsters’ children attended Mandel JCC preschool and summer camps. “Some of my best friends are the parents I met through my kids involvement at The J,” said Cindy. “The J provides invaluable opportunities for young Jewish couples to form lasting friendships.”

“Ever since I was a kid, The J has

Nine years ago the Polsters found a way to give back to The J in a manner that would benefit people of all ages and abilities. They launched the Mandel JCC Indoor Triathlon & Biathlon. Keith, who had participated in triathlons thought that the Mandel JCC would be a perfect venue for a family-style winter event.

attracted 135 participants. The fundraiser helps support the Mandel JCC scholarship fund which this year provided $402,000 in scholarships to help defray the costs of membership, camp and Early Childhood fees to 400 individuals and families in need.

Exercising Philanthropy

“The mission of The J’s Indoor Triathlon and Biathlon has not wavered since it began,” said Keith, who has chaired the event each year. “Our goals are to raise money for The J’s scholarship fund, to run a fair race that is respected by serious athletes and welcoming to casual athletes and first timers, to improve the event each year, and to have fun”, he said.

Cindy, along with a team of other volunteers, enjoys being part of the action. “It’s wonderful to see the community come together for this event,” she said. “A team of young adult athletes with Jewish Family Service Association’s Horvitz Youth Ability program train all year and have been a part of the event from the start. The joy on their faces while competing is just amazing.”

Working with the Polsters has been gratifying for Karen Hiller, The J’s Director of Development. “Keith and Cindy are oneof-a-kind,” she said. “They unselfishly give of themselves in so many ways and work to ensure that all Mandel JCC services and programs are accessible to everyone in the community, no matter their financial situation. Their generosity and dedication is inspiring to us all.”

He was right. Having just completed its 8th season, the Indoor Triathlon and Biathlon, which encompasses swimming, biking, and running has been growing each year. Due to corporate sponsorship and individual and team support, the Triathlon raised $36,000 this year and

As any parent will tell you, keeping middle school aged kids engaged, active and happy over the summer months is no easy task. Enter the Mandel JCC’s J-Teen Camp which provides a terrific option for so many young teens in our community

Now in its fourth year, J-Teen Camp under the direction of Cathy Kantin has grown to two divisions: One for campers entering grades six and seven and another for those entering grades eight and nine. Campers spend two to three days a week at Halle Park, in Burton, where

they participate in a wide range of activities such as canoeing, swimming, archery, ropes course, arts and crafts and sports. On the other days, campers can be found volunteering or taking a one- or two-day road trip to various local and regional attractions.

Unlike the younger campers, teen campers have more freedom to choose activities they want to take part in. “One of the reasons J-Teen Camp has been so successful is the program is built around choices,” explained Cathy, a Hudson middle-school teacher. “At this age, kids know what they like and don’t like.”

“It’s great to see teens while connecting to the Jewish and
10

“Throughout the summer we integrate Jewish values such as tzedakah (charity) and tikkun olam (repairing the world) into camp,” Cathy added. It’s great to see teens doing positive things while connecting to the Jewish and greater communities. Some of our campers continue volunteering long after camp has ended.”

One day each week is devoted to community service projects serving local organizations, such as the Friendship Circle, Menorah Park, Montefiore and Shoes and Clothes for Kids. “It feels good to give your time and energy to help those in need,” said Eric Golovan, a Beachwood Middle School seventhgrader who is returning to J-Teen Camp for a second summer.

Teens with Purpose

“My son Alex loves Teen Camp,” said Tracey Lavine. “Left to their own devices, kids this age will gravitate to the computer, cell phone and TV all summer long. Getting my son outdoors, making new friends, volunteering and doing meaningful community service projects, traveling to neat places and above all having a really fun time, has been wonderful.”

Ari Golub, Director of Day Camps and Children Services, says J-Teen Camp responds to a programming need for an age group that can be difficult to engage. “When we started J-Teen Camp four years ago we didn’t know what kind of response we would get. Each year enrollment has nearly doubled. Our goal has been to provide meaningful experiences that will last long after camp ends and its gratifying to watch these teens grow and gain more confidence and self-esteem year after year.”

For thirty years South Euclid residents, Betty and Mike Hoffer, served as foster parents. They provided shelter, safety, nourishing meals and a warm loving environment for Northeast Ohio’s most vulnerable children.

“We felt honored and blessed to be able to share our home and our hearts with the foster children who stayed under our roof,” said Betty, a young 78 years old. “

The same care that Betty and Mike showed to their foster children is what they feel they now receive at the Mandel JCC’s Lunch Plus

program. “Lunch Plus is the best thing that could have happened to us,” said Mike, 83. “The staff is marvelous, the lunches are delicious and we enjoy being with friends.”

Lunch Plus, which provides a nourishing hot kosher lunch for a daily $1 suggested donation, is offered six-days-a-week at the Warrensville Community Apartments, in Cleveland Heights.

Annually, the program serves more than 12,000 nutritionally balanced, hot kosher meals to nearly 150 elderly adults. Free door-to-door transportation is also provided.

“Lunch Plus has put so It’s good to wake up in the morning and

Lunches, prepared by Menorah Park, include meat or fish, along with vegetables, rice, potatoes or pasta, fresh fruit and a beverage.

“We get enough protein at lunch so I only have to make two fleischig (meat) meals a week for our Shabbat dinner,” Betty said. “That is a big help because we are on a very tight budget.”

Since seniors do not live by bread alone, the Lunch Plus program also offers activities before and after lunch that are designed to appeal to the groups’ interests and abilities. These include exercise classes, trips, live entertainment, discussion groups, and monthly health screenings, bingo and guest speakers.

“The sense of camaraderie and connection is a vital component of the Lunch Plus program,” said Jamie Cohen, the Mandel JCC’s Director of Active Adults and Senior Services “Being isolated at home is not a good thing for aging seniors, many of whom do not have family members or friends nearby. We work hard to engage senior adults in programs and activities that keep them connected and active. Our goal at Lunch Plus is to help all of our seniors stay active and independent,” Jamie added.

Lunch Plus Gets an A+

The Hoffers enthusiasm for Lunch Plus is contagious. “As you get older you have to give up so many things,” said Betty. “Lunch Plus has put so much back into our lives. We feel valued and have become active members of a community. We aren’t just sitting on the sidelines.

“It’s good to wake up in the morning and know it’s a Lunch Plus day,” she added. “Being part of the program gives us something to look forward to.”

Mark Schachtel exercises every day as if his life depends on it. And, it just might.

Last August, at age 56, Mark suffered a mild stroke and in November he had open-heart surgery to repair a hole in his heart.

Mark, a professional pilot for a private company, was determined not to let his health issues keep him down. Once his medical team told him that exercise was the ticket to robust health, the Mandel JCC was front and center on Mark’s radar screen.

Within two weeks after heart surgery Mark began walking laps on The J’s indoor track. And four months later he was pedaling 25 miles a day on a stationary exercise bike.

Taking care of his body and exercising is nothing new to Mark, a former weight lifter.

“Before my health issues I was benching 300 pounds, but after my heart surgery I was told to give up weight lifting because it was too stressful for my heart. Now I focus on aerobic exercises like biking.”

“This has become my second home. I I am so motivated by his spirit,
14

Getting back into fighting form is not the only reason Mark is motivated to exercise.

According to FAA rules he can’t fly again until he passes rigorous physical and mental tests. Mark must also perform well on stress tests and his reflexes and cognitive skills must be thoroughly evaluated before he can get back into the cockpit.

“I’m determined to pass all those tests with flying colors and get back to work as soon as possible,” he said.

But right now Mark is keeping his feet firmly on the ground, with The J his main destination. “This has become my second home,” he said. “I’ve made so many workout buddies here. I work out next to a guy in his late 70s who is in such great shape it is incredible. I am so motivated by his spirit, stamina and positive outlook.”

The Sky’s the Limit

The sweat equity that Mark puts into his daily workouts has not gone unnoticed by Rich Zatta, The J’s Fitness and Personal Training Manager. “Mark is a man on a mission,” said Rich. “He takes his workouts very seriously. He has created quite a circle of friends here who are all rooting for him to pass all his FAA tests.”

Mark calls his daily workouts his emotional lifesaver. “It would be easy to fall into a serious depression right now, but exercising is better than taking anti-depressants,” he said. “I have been to a lot of gyms in my life, nothing compares to The J in terms equipment, staff and a strong sense of community. Just like in “Cheers,” whenever I walk in the gym, everyone knows my name.”

At 16-years-old, Max Gustafson knows a thing or two about making a splash at the Mandel JCC’s Aquatic Center.

The Shaker Heights High School sophomore, along with his younger brother Charles (Chachi), learned to swim at The J as a toddler. Over the last few years, Max has won more than two dozen medals at the 2012 and 2014 JCC Maccabi Games®.

The JCC Maccabi Games offers a lifechanging experience for Jewish teens. The Olympic-style games are open to athletes

ages 13 to 16 and attracts more than 6,000 participants from around the world. At the 2012 Games in Memphis, Max took home 11 medals including three golds. Two years later, he earned 14 golds and two silvers in Cherry Hill, N.J.

“Participating in the JCC Maccabi Games was such a great experience,” Max said. “I had so much fun competing and watching my teammates compete. It has shown me how a community can all work together to make such a huge event happen. It was also fun making friends from all over the country and world.”

Participating in the JCC Maccabi G It was also fun making friends fro m
16

This year, Max’s brother, 13-year-old Chachi, will compete as a swimmer for the first time. He will join a Cleveland contingency of 25 athletes plus their families.

“Fostering camaraderie among Jewish teens is more important than athletics and competition,” said Lorri Slesh, The J’s Director of Fitness, Wellness and Recreation. This past year we sent a delegation of 15 athletes to the JCC Maccabi Games. The Games offer an opportunity for teens from otherwise competing Cleveland suburbs and schools to become teammates and friends. And The J makes it easy for teens

to get involved in fitness. We’ve created an atmosphere where teens can play basketball, swim, use the cardio equipment and weights, take group fitness classes all while having fun and staying healthy.”

Making a Splash

For the Gustafsons, their involvement with The J runs deep and the JCC Maccabi Games is just one of many examples. Through the years, the Gustafson children have attended several of The J’s Day Camps as well as Camp Wise, where Max will be an SIT (Staff-In-Training) this summer. They attended Family Camp and Elyse attended Mom’s Camp, both at Camp Wise. Ken plays early-morning basketball and can be found exercising regularly in the Fitness Center.

For Max, The J is so much more than the Games. “The J has meant a lot to me. It has been a place where I went to day camp over the summer and where I had some of my first swim lessons. It has also been a place where I have bonded with people and where me and my dad go to have fun. Overall The J has been a very important place in my life.”

Max’s mom, Elyse, echoes her son’s sentiments. “We have been members since we moved here in 1999,” Elyse said. “In fact, we found our first playgroup for Max through The J and we are still friends with those families today. We can’t imagine not having The J in our lives.”

Kino, cinema, pelicula, der film, biograf –no matter what language you speak, the appeal of movies is universal.

Just ask Mandel JCC’s Cleveland Jewish FilmFest committee members Mila and Simon Rekhson. “In our native St. Petersburg we went to movies all the time,” said Mila. “Although these films did not have political content, Russian filmmakers produced excellent, complex movies about relationships and the human condition. Good movies are good movies anywhere.”

In 2007 the Rekhsons’ love of movies cast them in the role of committee members for The J’s Cleveland Jewish FilmFest. The couple could not have scripted a better volunteer experience. “The committee is professionally run, and all the films we have previewed have expanded our view of Jewish life in America, Israel and around the world,” said Mila, who also serves on the Mandel JCC’s Board of Trustees.

“Every committee member brings something festival’s growing
18

Learning all they can about American culture is important to the Rekhsons who immigrated to the United States in 1978. After spending a year in Washington D.C. both Mila and Simon were hired by GE Lighting at Nela Park. Mila worked as an electronics engineer, and Simon went on to become the chief scientist for the High Performance Glass Forming Technology Consortium at Cleveland State University.

Deborah Bobrow, The J’s Director of Arts and Culture, is thrilled to have the Rekhsons on the FilmFest committee. “The beauty of our committee is its global representation which includes committee members from five different countries,” she said. “Every committee member brings something special to the table and this is reflected in the richly diverse movies we present each year and the festival’s growing popularity.”

Picture Perfect!

During the year FilmFest committee members screen close to 100 US and international films with Jewish content before selecting the best films to be presented at the annual festival. The 2014 FilmFest attracted more than 5,000 movie lovers.

“Our goal, which the committee takes very seriously, is to entertain and educate the audience about the global Jewish experience,” said Simon. “Coming from Russia, Mila and I understand what life was like for the European Jewish community after World War II, and we are pleased when we see this subject treated fairly on the screen.” Simon adds, “Mila and I freely offer our opinions, no one minces words. The discussions are so good and that is often the best part of the evening for me.”

Just like the movies they enjoy so much, the Rekhsons give a hearty round of applause to the Mandel JCC. “Our entire family, which includes three sons, a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren, have benefited from The J. We are eternally grateful for the positive impact The J has had on all our lives,” said Mila.
