Misty Heather Morn Community Care Center

Sunrise Family Resturant

Care and Compassion for loved ones Selecting a facility for an elderly relative who can no longer take care of himself or herself independently is often a difficult decision. There are many considerations: It has to be a reliable place that is comfortable, safe and offers quality care. A caring and compassionate staff must treat your loved one with respect and dignity. If you think a place like that exists only in dreams, then you should Owner Reverend Francetta explore Misty Heather Morn. Located on Blissville Road in Hydeville, Misty Heather Morn provides the elderly with a place to come for care and shelter when the option of living alone is no longer available. Opened in 1985, the Colonial-style house gives residents a feeling often lacking in other facilities. All of the rooms have been tastefully decorated to make residents feel at home. Misty Heather Morn has the capacity for 16 residents. They have a staff of 16 employees. It’s a low ratio because many residents can care for themselves

in a level 3/ERC (enhanced residential care) facility. Misty Heather Morn has been able to obtain waivers from the State of Vermont for those residents who require Level 2 nursing home-type care because of their high level of service and care. Owner, Rev. Fran Tice also an RN explains, “We do provide a gamut of assistance to elderly residents who require nursing home level care.” The home uses alternative health modalities, such as foot and hand massage and aroTice, RN. ma-therapy. Tice said those who are interested in Misty Heather Morn are invited to take a tour of the facility, and she interviews potential residents to see if the facility can meet their needs. The evaluation is also used to determine whether the potential resident will fit in nicely with the residents already at the facility, so that everyone is comfortable and happy there. To find out more about the facility, or to schedule a tour, or to just stop by and spend time with the residents, give Misty Heather Morn a call at 802-2653300.

Some of the staff of Sunrise Family Resturant.

Breakfast served until two o’clock pm The Sunrise Family Restaurant is a family affair and labor of love for Pete Burhans, his wife, Crystal, and their children Ben and Kelsey. Sunrise Family Restaurant has an attractive and inviting décor. It can seat 45, has large, wood-slab tabletops that were sanded and finished by the Burhans, and a 13-foot maple counter. The unique setting and large capacity have made the restaurant a popular place for social gatherings. “Most of the food is homemade and the menu is affordable and varied,” the Burhans explained. One big draw is the restaurant’s allday breakfast. It serves breakfast foods until 2 p.m. everyday. The eatery also offers a chicken and

biscuit special on Thursday and a prime rib special on weekends. The eatery maintains its small town appeal through its customer service. The Burhans believe that if you treat every customer the way they expect and deserve to be treated, and if you offer the best overall value with good food and reasonable prices, customers will come back again and again. The Burhans encourage you to stop by. Sunrise Restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week and open for dinner Thursday through Sunday and is located on 178 Route 30, just north of Castleton Corners. Take-out is available, and the eatery can be reached at 802-671-8070.

Roxie’s Fries

Hermit Hill Books 15 years of business in Poultney

Roxie’s is celebrating its 60th year

This year marks Hermit Hill Book’s 18th year in business – three years as a fledging business in Middletown Springs and 15 years in Poultney. It’s hard to believe that the time has gone so fast. When we first opened in Poultney in 2001, we barely had enough books to fill the front room. Now, we not only fill both rooms, but we are bursting at the seams. And there are more books waiting for room on the shelves. In addition, we are now able to order new books from Ingram, a book distributor, and have them in the store within two days. Mention Roxie’s to anyone around Rutland, and they will instantly know what you’re talking about. The bright blue food stand has been a fixture at the Vermont State Fair for many years, and more recently, a food wagon in Castleton just west of Castleton four corners on Route 4A. Now in the 60th year of operation by the same family, Roxie’s continues to be a culinary landmark. The iconic business is renowned for its French fries, which have been voted “Best French Fries” Grandchildren for 7 years in a row by Market Surveys of America. But there is so much more. Among the delectable delights are lobster rolls, hot dogs, hamburgers and grilled chicken sandwiches. The stand is also known for its unique black raspberry ice cream, a longtime favorite of customers. The current family ownership of Roxie’s began in the late 1950s, when Gertrude and Norval Ramson purchased the business (which included a food truck) from Earle Wilson, who founded the business in 1939. Wilson started Roxie’s as a seasonal food wagon at Rutland’s Main Street Park. Today, Roxie’s is run by Ramson’s granddaughter Sandi Rivers and her husband Tony. Sandi started working at

Canal Festival Friday, Saturday n Music, rides, food and games highlight a variety of activities By Dan King

142 Main Street, Whitehall • 518-499-5017

OPEN 6AM ~ 4PM DAILY!

Skenesborough Park will be happening Friday and Saturday. The annual Whitehall Canal Festival kicks off on Friday at the Skenesborough Park. For more than 30 years, Canal Festival has marked the “unofficial start of summer,” with a variety of activities aimed at people with different interests. “For over 30 years, Festival has been celebrated in Whitehall,” said James Aiken, a member of the committee that plans the event. “This year the committee plans to continue the event originally organized to give residents, who rarely traveled out of town, their own entertainment.” The festivities on Friday include the popular cake booth, where attendees can place wagers on a spinning wheel, in the hopes of win-

booth and vendors, rides and games, there will be live music inside the picnic area at the park. Steel Pier Jazz Band will perform on Friday for the second year in a row. The band has become a staple in the Canal Festival, performing many times in years past. The band was formed in the 1970s and was originally called “The Dixie Daddies.” They performed on the Lake George Cruise Boats for decades. Most of the band members are retired, but still enjoy brining Dixieland to the area. On Saturday, the festivities continue with many of the same vendors, games and rides, with the added bonus of free horse rides from 4:30-7:30 p.m. The horse rides are offered by Wings Clydesdales Carriage Rides. When the horse rides end and the crowd meanders back into the park, the band Freewheelin’ will take the stage inside the amphitheater. The band, formerly known as Airtight, is well known in the

Muddy Trail Jerky Co.

Precision Auto Body

2016 marks second year of business Business is a community staple Muddy Trail produces and sells 10 flavors of beef jerky. It also offers a variety of other products including snack sticks, pickled eggs, pickled sausage, dip and seasoning mixes. It’s best-selling dip is its Bread Olive Oil Dip – customers cannot get enough of this one! Hunters can take their meat to Muddy Trail to have it processed into jerky, sausage, hot dogs, snack sticks and more. From slicing the beef, to marinating, drying, packing and labeling, the whole process is done at Owner Mary Lussier. Muddy Trail’s Granville store. Flavors include: Teriyaki, Bacon & Molasses, Sriracha, Habanero Mango, Garlic & Pepper, Hickory, Original, and Honey Teriyaki! It all started about 8 years ago when owner Mary Lussier was grocery shopping. She picked up four bags of beef jerky priced at $7.99 each. “I was trying to help out my husband with healthy snacks that would not affect his blood sugar while working in the yard and cutting wood for the winter,” she said. “…little did I

know that he would devour them within 4 hours that same afternoon.” After doing some research, Lussier discovered that she could make jerky for her husband at a more affordable price. She tried several recipes, swapping out ingredients to fit his tastes. Now the jerky is not only the staple of her business, it’s the staple at her family Christmas parties. Muddy Trail uses local meat and other local products to season its jerky, including honey. “This keeps our local farmers in business and stops the big box stores from making even more money,” Lussier said. Lussier said her efforts now are focused on getting her products into local farmer’s markets to grow the business. Muddy Trail Jerky Co. is located at 85 Quaker St. in Granville, New York. It’s open Thursday and Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are also available. Like the company on Facebook (facebook.com/muddytrailjerky) or contact Mary Lussier at 518-642-2194 for more information.

Precision Auto Body located on Main Street has been a staple in Castleton for six years. Prior to that Precision Auto Body was located in Wallingford. Steve and Barb Betit moved into this location, previously known as Eli’s Auto Body, to have a centralized location for all of their current clients and new. Having lived in the community for many years, they know how important it is to provide top-quality customer service, because that’s how you get those customers to come back. That’s why they “go the extra mile to assure that your vehicle is repaired to its original standards,” Steve said. In addition to Steve’s three decades of experience and craftsmanship in auto body repair, his experienced staff has another combined 25. So your vehicle will be in good hands no matter who at Precision Auto Body touches it. A full-service repair shop, Precision provides all types of collision repair work – big or small – including frame straightening, glass installation and detailing. The hail storms that occurred in May and July of 2014 had a huge impact on the area and many automobiles were damage in the storms. Precision Auto Body had highly qualified local PDR, (Paintless Dent Repair Technicians,) at the facility to repair damaged vehicles. Should there ever be a need in the future, Precision Auto Body is ready to handle the repairs! Repair estimates continue to be free and never require an appointment, and Precision uses computerized estimates to provide a more accurate evaluation of the vehicle damage so it can be restored to

They send digital photos of the vehicle damage with the complete repair estimate to accelerate the repair process and make as quick and painless as possible for their customers. Precision Auto Body works with all major insurance companies and will work with customers and their insurance company to make their experience a smooth and positive one from start to finish. So Steve, “Barb,” and the entire staff look forward to providing you with quality, reliable auto body service. A Trace of Lace Bridal Boutique A trace of elegance for the big day

Owners Richard and Bob Munch with their staff.

Employing experienced technicians Sure, they have all the latest and greatest tools and equipment. Sure, there is the computerized frame measuring system, waterborne paint system, touchless tire machine, wheel balancer, and a down draft paint booth in their15-bay collision shop. But all that is just “fluff.” What is really important is the ongoing education and experience from each of the seven technicians that is reflected in each and every job. Their technicians, with over 129 years of combined service to York Coach Works, have the pride in their work as if they themselves were the owners. The front office is the first stop to a smooth experience with your insur-

ance company. You report the claim and York Coach Works will make sure that everything is handled with your best interest in mind. Remember, all collision work comes with a lifetime warrantee, not from the insurance company but directly from the people you know at York Coach Works. Marble Mansion Inn

Markie Roofing and Spray Foam Energy saving to meet customer needs

The Marble Mansion Inn located in Fair Haven, Vermont

Historic elegance in beautiful village Experience historic elegance in this circa 1867 French Second Empire Vermont bed and breakfast on the village green in Fair Haven. Honored again in 2016 with the Trip Advisor Excellence award making that distinguised honor for 5 years consecutively. Unmatched in the area is the grandeur and elegance of the Marble Mansion Inn. You are invited to come enjoy and unwind in the opulence of a 19th-century marble mansion and marvel at 12-foot-high ceilings decorated with intricate Georgian style plaster crown moldings and ceiling medallions. Curl up with a good book in front of one of the twin marble fireplaces in the double parlor with gleaming herringbone pattern wood floors and double crystal chandeliers. We are offering not only a relaxing break but a unique experience by taking in the history of the mansion, which was built in 1867 in the French Second Empire style by relatives of Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen. The Allen family was one of Vermont‘s first marble investors. At the time marble was readily available and inexpensive to harvest, and Ira Allen decided to build a grand home made of Vermont marble. The intricacies put into the three-story mansion make it unique in character and grandeur, from its handcarved marble mantles around all seven fireplaces to the plaster crown moldings gracing the 12-foot ceilings.

To see it is to truly take a step back in time when cost was measured by the finished product and not by the hours to complete the job. We hope your stay with us will be measured by the finished product, along with our amenities and dedicated attention to your needs, leaving you feeling refreshed and renewed. We have twelve rooms elegantly furnished awaiting your arrival. Nine rooms named after a famous author. Enjoy the oriental flair of the Rudyard Kipling room, read “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in the William Shakespeare room, or discover the fantasy world of Middle Earth in the J.R.R. Tolkien room. Friendly and proffessional service Longevity in today’s competitive business climate is a rarity, earned only by those businesses with an unwavering dedication to offering the best in goods and service. Such is the dedication shown by American Hardware at 57 Church St. in Granville. Founded in 1972, American Hardware has weathered a name change and a move from its original site at Church and Main streets to its much bigger location. Today it’s owned by David Linendoll and Kyle Hunter and managed by Kyle’s sister, Wendy Hunter, and they have maintained the full-service hardware store’s longstanding tradition. “We’re a family-owned business and have been for four generations,” said Linendoll, who worked in the business since graduating from high school in 1977, before purchasing his share of the partnership in 1989. Kyle became David’s business partner in 1994 when his father, Bob Hunter, retired. American Hardware offers a full line of hardware and related supplies. Whether its nails, tools, paint, plumbing or electrical supplies, the store is well-stocked with any items needed to address any project around the house. American Hardware has rentals – floor sanders, carpet cleaners, jackhammers, hammer drills – and bagged goods such as concrete, mortar, solar salt, sand, mulch, birdseed, as well as bulk supplies of nails, screws, slate hooks, kero wicks, and Forney welding supplies. “Ninety percent of the time when a

customer says ‘I know you don’t have this, I’ve been from Rutland (Vt.) to Glens Falls and I can’t find one,’ we have it in stock on the shelf,” Wendy Hunter said. American Hardware also carries a full line of swimming pool supplies, including chemicals such as chlorine and HTH, testing kits, thermometers and skimmers; plus a full line of appliances, featuring G.E. products. American Hardware features a stateof-the-art computerized paint color matching system that affords customers a choice of more than 2,000 colors, and it offers a variety of services, including window and screen repair, pipe threading, stove pipe cutting and crimping, faxing and propane tank refills. They have recently expanded with a full line of Rustoleum paints and we now stock Varathene stains and polyurethanes. Experience is key: David has 39 years, Wendy 25 years, Kyle 24 years, Roy Rathbun has 18 years and David Guest has been here for three years. In their Salem store, located on Main Street in the historic downtown, Tom and Dominic are always there to help you. “We give friendly, personal service, for which we pride ourselves; we are customer friendly and we know most of our customers by their first names,” Kyle said. American Hardware is open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Contact American Hardware at 518-642-1334 or Salem Hardware at 518-854-3113.

If you haven’t heard of Pro Cycle, perhaps it’s because they don’t spend a ton of money taking out ads and putting their logo in newspapers or on billboards. Instead, they like to use that portion of their budget for donations, raffles and door prizes for different local events. Pro Cycle offers the best in clean, used motorcycles, ATVs and snowmobiles as well as the newest in aftermarket accessories. It also offers new and used parts from Arctic Cat, CanAm, CF Moto, Harley Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, Skidoo, Suzuki and Yamaha. The last year has been a big one for

Pro Cycle. Market hosts dozens of businesses Hard economic times have forced small farms to look to new avenues to keep their operations running, so Sherry Smith opened Riverside Farm’s Locally Grown Farmers Market at 12144 Rte. 4 in Hampton, NY, and it is now a market with over a dozen farms and small businesses. Riverside Farm, with the most prominent location, was lead in organizing the market, which offers a large selection of produce and products year-round. “Even in winter, we have localgrown greens from heated greenhouses,” said Smith. The Hampton location is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Summer through Christmas and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter months after Christmas through spring. The market offers locally grown produce, meat, eggs, honey, cider, baked goods, maple products, jams and jellies, all-natural soaps and bug spray, crafts and more. Organic berries are available in-season directly from Riverside Farm itself and for Christmas, trees and a large variety holiday evergreen decor. They even do custom orders for just the wreath or other item done in your own color scheme or theme you envision. “Our customers can be assured they are supporting only local farms when they visit us,” Smith said. All produce and food items are from farms from

Washington, Warren, & Saratoga Counties in NY State and Rutland or Essex County in VT State. The idea is “Little Farms helping Little Farms.” The Market site is heated and air-conditioned for year-round comfort of the products to keep them freshest. But the customers enjoy the air conditioning in the summer and the heat in the cold days of winter as well. The markets’ member farms did research and found that daily/multiday farmers market cooperatives were a new concept to the traditional farmers markets. Each farmer owns their products and is paid weekly for their sales. Smith said the owners are proud that the group works together to help each other keep local agriculture going, and the fact that “most of us are multi-generational farmers. Together we will keep our local family farms in the family and running for generations to come.” Riverside Farm, she noted, has been operating since 1923 in her family and it is but one of many farms within her extended family that still run today. We are on generation number 4 with generation number 5 learning the ups and downs of farm life. “We hope to continue to expand our item base and local farm membership to cover as many items as we can,” she added.

Keith, Keith and Joe Thomas.

Thomas’ can fix your foreign cars Nowadays, a car owner is as likely to need repair on a foreign car as often as a domestic. Perhaps that explains why Thomas’ Auto Repairs puts foreign before the word domestic in its advertisements. Founded in 1997 by Keith Thomas, and located on Route 30 in Wells, the business “is going strong” thanks to “great community support,” Thomas notes. Whether the car is made in the USA or elsewhere, Thomas is ready to service vehicles from “all the Lakes Region.” And that does not just mean

Fair Haven Fitness Fair Haven’s family run gym ‘where you matta’ This year has been a great year for Fair Haven Fitness. On June 1, the company celebrated its tenth year of ownership. They were able to do some major upgrades, adding five Life Fitness treadmills and two more ellipticals. They are the only gym in Vermont that has a monolift and now they are proud to say they feature three in the Powerlifting area. They also added many new lifting bars. The equipment wasn’t the only thing to see changes in 2016. For classes they added “Spinning,” with 12 new spinning bikes and an awesome teacher, Mary Lou Thompson. Classes filled up days in advance, all winter long. Jen Paquette and Laura Des Jardins started teaching “Kick Box Cardio Blast!” If you show up tired to these classes you won’t be when you are done – boy, do these ladies bring the energy level up! They offer many other classes as well, including: Yoga, Tone Your Bootie, Tone Your Arms, Core, and their famous Bootcamp. As a member of Fair Haven Fitness, all classes are included in the membership except for Bootcamp. Bootcamp is an outdoor class that focuses on obstacle course and military style training. Anything goes! They have been busy giving the outside of Fair Haven Fitness a fresh new look as well. The building and obstacles saw a fresh coat of paint. The obstacle course got a new lay out, sprint hill, “A” frame, Peg board, and ledge board obstacles. They care about the gym as much as their home and treat it as such. They continue to maintain a safe, clean, and friendly atmosphere. The gym is more than just equip-

GMC expands completion program Gracious business for community Green Mountain College has expanded its online degree completion program to include a bachelor of arts in interdisciplinary studies along with the bachelor of science in business introduced two years ago. The program builds on GMC’s strengths in online learning. “We have a lot of expertise developing rich online content for students,” said William Prado, director of the two undergraduate programs. “The fundamental strengths of the program are grounded in the same educational experience our residential students receive including small classes, close View of Ames Hall mentoring by knowledgeable and committed faculty members, and career opportunities that result from joining an active and well-connected learning community.” The primary reason students choose online courses from Green Mountain College is that they can get the same exceptional education that students living on campus receive, but with a greater degree of flexibility. Students can log in any time and work around their busy schedules. There are no more than 20 students in each class, so students communicate directly with their peers and receive plenty of attention from their instructor. The two online programs are designed to help working professionals who have

already completed at least 48 credits of undergraduate courses finish their undergraduate education. Students will complete an additional 48 credits of core curriculum at GMC to graduate. Students can submit work life credits based on their background by preparing a portfolio with a third party that can help define work accomplishments, experiences and strengths to potentially satisfy core coursework. Students who complete the program are also offered an inside track to a master’s degree. Graduates of the program who attain an average GPA of 2.75 and two years of business practitioner experience may apply directly to at GMC. one of the College’s four online graduate programs. Full-time students will typically complete the degree program in about two and one-half years. “As the economy focuses more on the triple bottom line (people, planet, and profit), consumers and companies will seek employees with backgrounds in sustainability to help them achieve their highest efficiency while reducing the negative impact of their operations,” said Prado. “We don’t just teach our students how to live and compete today. We teach our students how to improve and compete in the ever-changing world we face tomorrow.”

Wonderful charm in reopened Inn Come visit the SVA gallery Since reopening the historic Maplewood Inn Bed & Breakfast in Fair Haven last year, innkeepers Paul and Roy Allen-Webber are settling into the unique life of operating a bed and breakfast in a classic Greek Revival home. “The inn has a wonderful charm to it,” said Paul. “The grounds are beautiful - from the gazebo in the back yard to the trail along the brook. It’s great for a relaxing read, a quiet nap in the hammock, or just enjoying the beautiful wild flowers.” The inn’s rooms can accommodate from one person to a family. The inn has five rooms, two suites among them. Two other rooms can join each other for friends or family traveling together. The first floor room is dog-friendly and looks out on the gazebo and original 1800s red barn. “The rooms are wonderfully decorated with tasteful design,” Paul said. Each guest room has its own private, en-suite bathroom. Rooms are also equipped with HDTV/Bluray, iron and ironing boards, hair dryers, sound machines, and alarm clocks with charging ports for both iPhone and Android. One of the biggest draws to the inn is the fourlegged greeter, Beasley. The formal dining room seats six, while the Garden Room accommodates larger groups. The kitchen features a guest wet bar complete with complimentary beverages, guest refrigerator, glasses, and lots of other things guests might need to settle in. Roy loves to share the storied history of their beautifully restored Greek Revival home. “It was built around 1843 by farmer Asahel Kidder, a prominent citizen of the town who also represent-

ed Fair Haven in the Vermont General Assembly from 1843-1844. As one of the town’s most prosperous farmers, he apparently wanted his house to reflect his success. “ While Kidder was known for sheep farming in the mid-1800s, owning over 800 acres at one point, that business was on the decline in Vermont after the Civil War. By 1880, Mr. Kidder’s son-inlaw and heir Isaac “Ike” Wood started a dairy farm on the property. Named Maplewood Farm, it became a highly successful business, particularly after the advent of refrigeration and mechanization in the early 20th century. Maplewood Dairy was one of the most successful dairies in the state, with a distribution area that encompassed western Rutland County and the Hudson Valley of New York State. It was run by Kidder’s descendants, spanning 3 generations of the Wood family, until it ceased operations in 1979. The house was purchased by Paul and Cynthia Soder in 1986, where they made several renovations in preparation for opening the Maplewood Inn Bed & Breakfast in September of that year. After ownership was passed on to two separate couples over the next 25+ years, Paul and Roy purchased the property in 2014, making considerable renovations throughout the Inn, and re-opening in July 2015. Maplewood Inn Bed & Breakfast is located at 1108 South Main Street/Route 4 in Fair Haven. “There’s so much to see and do just minutes away,” said Paul. “For the history buff, there are so many stories right here at the Maplewood Inn.” Visit them at maplewoodinnbedandbreakfast.com or call 802-278-8286.

Ducharme Funeral Home Roberts Aubin Funeral Home Making difficult times more easy Walter Ducharme knows how difficult it can be to concentrate on funeral arrangements after losing a loved one. That’s why he wants families to know his two operations, Ducharme Funeral Home in Castleton and Roberts Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney, want to make an incredibly sensitive time as easy as possible. “Having been working in the emergency medical services for years, I found it was another way to help people in a time of need,” said the Castleton First Responders member who was also inspired by his father-in-law, Ducharme Doug King, whom he has worked with. Ducharme has owned his own funeral home since it opened in Castleton in 2002 and acquired the Poultney funeral home in June 2010. The two businesses specialize in memorial products and services, including keepsakes, caskets and urns. He also operates his own crematory. “I’m very proud of owning our own crematory and handling the process of cremation from start to end,” he said. “It provides peace of mind for families knowing their loved one never leaves our care.”

Funeral Home, Castleton. People are always surprised, Ducharme said, with the savings they realize when they chose to have him prepare their memorial services. Customers are encouraged to shop around and compare prices and services, but if they choose Ducharme, they will be well taken care of. For more information, call Ducharme Funeral Home at 802-468-0026 or Roberts Aubin Funeral Home at 802287-5511, or go online to ducharmefuneralhome.com and robertsaubinfuneralhome.com.

East Poultney General Store Summer specials are delicious Carol Stierle has owned the East Poultney General Store for almost two and a half years now, and is loving it. With summer season upon us, Carol is serving up sweet and hot pork sausage, along with chicken sausage with either spinach or sundried tomatoes. “It’s very popular and delicious,” she said. Carol noted that Owner Carol Stierle. a general store is a little bit of everything. From a full deli to daily specials, the big wheel of extra-sharp Cabot cheddar, feed and grain, a liquor outlet, wine, beer, sundry items, non-alcoholic beverages, and fishing licenses. Carol and Wendi are enjoying the summer – the store’s busiest season. Visitors from near and far count on the East Poultney General Store for vacation provisions such as prepared foods, beer and wine, fishing licenses, and authentic Vermont products. “I so appreciate the loyalty of the

The Barn Restaurant and Tavern Williams True Value Hardware All regular menu entrées only $14 “That’s right, every entree on the regular menu is only $14 -- all night, every night,” say restaurant owners and your hosts, Mark and Margaret McChesney. “We didn’t want to do an early bird special, or limit it to weeknights – we want our customers to enjoy whatever they want, whenever they want. And we’re not talking pot roast and baked ziti – we’re talking Filet Mignon and Broiled Scallops” adds Mark. The pricing policy has Owners, Margaret and Mark been a huge hit, with business and popularity continuing to grow. Like many other small businesses in America, The Barn Restaurant really suffered the effects of the economic collapse in 2008. “We were on the brink of bankruptcy, and knew we had to make a drastic change in order to keep the business going, so that’s when we decided to try a promotion where we lowered our prices. It was so successful, we extended it to two months and then kept it ever since” says Chef/ Owner Margaret McChesney”. What surprised the couple even more was the “Ripple Effect” it created. “We went from 16 to 23 employees, we were able to give more raises, spend more in the community, give more to charities, and hire more contractors to help us improve our own property.” You choose a restaurant first because of the food it serves. We buy whole fish and whole cuts of meat. Our shellfish is preservative-free and as many of our vegetables as possible come from our own garden, or the gardens of our neighbors. We trim, season, prepare, and cook everything ourselves, without taking shortcuts, creating delicious steaks, seafood and pasta, chicken and vegetarian dishes. And the addition of a new prime menu features daily specials that really showcase The Barn’s culinary talents. Freshly cut swordfish, roast duckling with an Asian slaw, 20-ounce ribeye steaks are but a few examples

of the prime menu offerings. Value and quality are but two of the benchmarks the Barn strives for – and achieves. “Great food, beverages and value are nothing if the service is lousy, or the restaurant is uncomfortable or uninviting” note Mark and Margaret. The Barn has consistently reinvested in its building to make it comfortable yearround. We recently have installed solar hot-water panels, a state of the art propane heating system, as well McChesney. as a new septic system to better handle the increase in volume. The paint is fresh, the lighting is lovely, and the space, whether in the dining room, the loft, the tavern, or on the new seasonal porch, is breathtaking. The Barn is also a full-service caterer specializing in weddings, cocktails parties and amazing pig roasts. All of this with a bartender, servers, bussers – everyone – who take their jobs seriously and deliver truly great service. Finally, there is the fun factor. The Barn has been hosting live music every week since 1999! Wednesday nights, stop in for “Pickin’ in Pawlet,” a local bluegrass night that you’re welcome to join, or sit back and enjoy. Friday nights feature bands – many of which bring national recognition. In the past year, Friday nights have hosted bands from Nashville, Memphis, Providence, Reno, Seattle, Florida, Germany, Great Britain and many other locations throughout the US – both near and far. The Barn is open at 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday nights. Reservations are recommended, particularly on weekends, and can be made online, or by calling 802-3253088. Please visit us online at www. barnrestaurant.com. For up-to-theminute announcements about music, specials, new features, events and even weather closings, find and like us on Facebook at The Barn Restaurant and Tavern. The Barn is located at 5581 VT Route 30 in Pawlet, Vt. We look forward to serving you.

G&L stands for “Greg and Lisa,” and running Benson’s busy general store is very much a partnership for the Fontaines. “Not many couples could work with their spouse, but we make it work,” Lisa said. “Greg is the boss in the store, and I’m the boss at home, ha-ha!” That sense of humor is exactly one of the many things G&L General Store’s customers enjoy. “We try to keep it light-hearted and make it an Grandchild number 10 is enjoyable place for people to shop,” Lisa said. “Most days, you will hear a lot of laughter among customers and employees. Greg normally has a joke or two just waiting for someone. People usually leave the store with a smile on their face.” But the store hasn’t maintained 12 years of success just because of its casual, friendly atmosphere – it also has a little something for everybody. The store, located at 2813 Rte. 22A, offers groceries, a full deli, wings, pizza, soft-serve ice cream, slushies, chicken, pork, steak, hamburger and local Vermont honey and maple products, used cars, gas and diesel.

In the heart of Wells, Vermont on Route 30 you will find the charming little store called the Wells Country Store. First established in 1832, Juli and Tim Haley have enjoyed ownership since 2002. Their recipe for success is simple: “Quality sets us apart.” Whether it is the array of delicious baked Ashlee Manell and Dana goods made in house, fresh house salads and made to order sandwiches, or the carefully prepared entrees and meals, they strive to make their philosophy of “quality first” more than just a slogan. Chef Ali West recently joined the team at the Wells Country Store. Ali is an extraordinary chef creating quite a stir in this sleepy little hamlet. Her focus this summer is creating fresh new salads, appetizers, and entrees-plus putting her own unique spin on summer staples like Granny’s potato salad recipe. “We are thrilled to have her,” said owner Juli Haley. “It has been wonderful to see the fantastic response from our customers and the community.!”

Haley. Also new and exciting for 2016 is the expansion of our ice cream shoppe into its own area. “As Tim explained, “we have always been known for our excellent Maple Creemees, but we wanted to do more. So we created a whole new walk up window just off the patio. We are still serving up Creemees like crazy but we have also added hot fudge sundaes, specialty sundaes, and floats made with on draft root beer.” The Wells Country Store is located on Vermont Route 30 in Wells, Vermont. Store hours are Sunday through Wednesday 7am to 6pm, and Thursday through Saturday 7am to 8pm. Pop in and say hello.

As you drive the many up and down rough roads in and around Vermont you may have noticed the many farms and slate quarries in the area. At Turunen Truck and Equipment Repair, their customers are from many of those farms and quarries. Since 1990 Turunen Truck & Equipment Repair has kept many of these farm and quarry trucks and equipment up and running so they continue with their business. From the large mining equipment to the small feed wagon. To the small air compressor to the large tractors used to haul the hay wagons. If it’s broke, Turunens’ can fix it. If you blow a hose on a piece of equipment, they have hoses & fittings to get you up and running. Has your truck broken a spring on these rough roads, they can remove & replace springs and

make u-bolts on the spot to get you back together. Are the brakes on your truck a little spongy or even the clutch, they have the brakes shoes and/or brake can, air brake hoses and fittings and clutches to get them back up to code. They also are a Vermont Inspection station for cars/trucks and trailers. From replacing broken springs, replacing a blown hose, they can also rebuild hydraulic cylinders and pumps, major engine overhaul (transmissions, clutches, jakes, engines. just to name a few). Or if you a have an odd size bolt or part you cannot find anywhere else, Turunens’ probably has it, and if not, they will know where to get it. Do you have an idea for a truck? Then they can probably build it (just ask some of the local farms and quarries). And if you cannot get to them, they can come to you with their 24/7 roadside assistance.

Founded in 1972, Maplewood Ice continues to operate successfully under the ownership of David Wood. Strategically located in the towns of Whitehall and Queensbury, operations are centrally located to their vast distribution network. As one of fewer than 10 ice companies in the entire state of New York, Maplewood Ice does business with many local companies, Wood said. As one would guess, it keeps them busy with a state-of-the art filtration system and the equipment to keep up with the demand. In fact, the company’s automated production line can package 3,900 bags of ice per hour - that’s a lot of cool. Their product has the Pride of New York Seal. Maplewood Ice employs 40 full-time people and has an additional 20 part-time staff members who all work to make sure your icy needs are met. Wood said more packaging was moved to their Queensbury facility in 2008-2009. “We package 20-pound there, and five-pound bags are packaged and

Ice Sculpture from Maplewood Ice. stored there,” he said. In February 2011, the Whitehall location added a new Keith walk-in floor ice bin, an automatic form and fill machine making 2,300 bags per hour. In 2012, Wood purchased a machine by Clinebell Equipment that makes ice for ice sculpturing and carving. Maplewood Ice enjoys giving back to the community, and they provide donations to charity organizations, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and local fire departments, Wood said. Because this is a seasonal business that is extremely busy in summer, Wood said he enjoys (what else?) ice fishing as well as NASCAR in the off-season. Great service and summer savings Fair Haven Chrysler Dodge Ram is proud of its 69-year-old track record. Excellent service, knowledgeable staff and customer incentives are all roads that lead to the dealership’s success. “Our repeat customer rate is twice the national average for Chrysler and Dodge dealers,” Will Dodge, dealership owner said. “The adage that all dealers pay the same for their vehicles is true; the fact is we don’t have a bright, new shiny facility that customers have to pay for when they purchase a vehicle from us.
